A Delphi Survey Of Experts’ Opinions Regarding Prevention Of Impairment In Professional Psychology Training, Kin-Ming Chan
Dissertations
This study sought to identify the most important measures that may be implemented in professional psychology training to prevent the future impairment of professionals. An adjunctive research question of this study addressed how these important measures can be successfully implemented. A 2-round Delphi method was conducted. Twenty-eight experts in impairment prevention participated in the first round study, and 20 of them continued to participate in the second round. In the first round, the experts rated the importance of an original list of 38 preventive measures, suggested additional important preventive measures, and provided considerations for successful implementation of their most important …

Using Dew Points To Estimate Savings During A Planned Cooling Shutdown, Matthew Friedlein, David Changnon, Eric Musselman, Jeff Zielinski
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
In an effort to save money during the summer of 2003, Northern Illinois University (NIU) administrators instituted a four-day working week and stopped air conditioning buildings for the three-day weekends (Friday through Sunday). Shutting down the air conditioning systems caused a noticeable drop in electricity usage for that part of the campus that features in our study, with estimated total electricity savings of 1,268,492 kilowatt-hours or 17% of the average usage during that eight-week period. NIU’s air conditioning systems, which relied on evaporative cooling to function, were sensitive to dew point levels. Greatest savings during the shutdown period occurred on …

Perceived Similarity And Relationship Success Among Dating Couples: An Idiographic Approach, Catherine J. Lutz, Angela Christine Bradley, Jennifer L. Mihalik, Erika R. Moorman
Psychology Faculty Publications
This study utilized an idiographic approach to investigate the relation between similarity on valued characteristics and relationship success. College students (N = 247) rated their current romantic partner on perceived similarity in personality, attitudes, interests, and religious affiliation; the importance of similarity in these dimensions; and relationship satisfaction. Relationship status was assessed 6 weeks later. Results revealed significant similarity by importance interactions for religion and interests in predicting satisfaction. Participants with high perceived similarity in religion or interests reported greater satisfaction than did their low similarity counterparts, but only to the extent that they rated this type of similarity …

Branch-And-Cut-And-Price Methods For Logistics Problems With Limited Risk, Hee-Su Hwang
Branch-And-Cut-And-Price Methods For Logistics Problems With Limited Risk, Hee-Su Hwang
Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive
There exist many uncertainties in a logistics system, such as unknown demand, unsteady fuel cost, machine breakdowns, and accidents to name a few. Logistics management is difficult because logistics managers must solve a global optimization problem, which includes eliminating as much uncertainty as possible, finding effective methods of managing uncertainty, and operating the entire logistics system effectively. To cope with uncertainty, many efforts have been made for vehicle routing problems. On the contrary, traditional ship-scheduling models ignore uncertainty, even in highly volatile markets. We present a set-packing model that limits risk using a quadratic variance constraint. After generating first-order linear …

Les For Wing Tip Vortex Around An Airfoil, Jiangang Cai
Mathematics Dissertations - Archive
The wing tip vortex is very important because of its effects on the noise generation, blade/vortex interactions on helicopter blades, propeller cavitations on ships, and other fields. The objective of this work is to use the numerical simulation with high order accuracy and high resolution to investigate the formation and the near field evolution of a wing tip vortex at high Reynolds number. The computational domain includes a rectangular half-wing with a NACA 0012 airfoil section, a rounded wing tip and the surrounding boundaries. The wing has an aspect ratio of 0.75. The angle of attack is 10 degrees. The …

Journal of Student Financial Aid
This article focuses on the Web-based resources available to low-income students as they build their perceptions, make their decisions, and engage in financial aid activities. Data are gathered from the results of six focus groups with low-income high school students attending urban high schools. Findings suggest that low-income students do have access to computers but lack the knowledge and support needed to navigate the financial aid resources available on-line.
Access To College: The Role Of Tuition, Financial Aid, Scholastic Preparation And College Supply In Public College Enrollments, Katherine Baird
Access To College: The Role Of Tuition, Financial Aid, Scholastic Preparation And College Supply In Public College Enrollments, Katherine Baird
Journal of Student Financial Aid
Rapid tuition increases over the last few decades have made public institutions much less affordable than they once were. This and other policy changes may be affecting college enrollment rates across the country. This article examines how student preparation and college supply interact with the usual factors of tuition, financial aid, and family background to explain state by state variation in public college enrollment rates among Black, Hispanic, and White youth over the 1990s. This study finds that rapid tuition increases over the 1990s, changes in federal need-based aid, and steady increases in merit-based financial aid cannot explain variation in …

The Perils Of Self-Censorship, Robert D. Leighninger Jr.
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Earlier this year, Jim Midgley, until recently Dean of the School of Social Welfare at the University of California, Berkeley, was asked to write a guest editorial for the National Association of Social Work's (NASW) premier journal Social Work by its new editor Jorge Delva. The topic was international social work and the challenges of globalization. After presenting some of the pros and cons of globalization, Jim chose to focus on "unipolarism," a foreign policy articulated by neoconservatives like Charles Krauthammer, Paul Wolfowitz, and William Kristol and embraced by officials of the George W. Bush administration, particularly Secretary of Defense …

Fairness Issues In Law And Mental Health: Directions For Future Social Work Research, Jose B. Ashford, Jane Holschuh
Fairness Issues In Law And Mental Health: Directions For Future Social Work Research, Jose B. Ashford, Jane Holschuh
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
Concepts from the procedural justice literature in social psychology are examined that offer useful guidance for social work researchers with interests in investigating informal adjudications, speciality treatment courts, and other areas of the administrative process previously neglected in mental health services research. These theoretical concepts are offered as an alternative to the therapeutic jurisprudence framework being adopted by some social workers in the field of law and mental health. The issues outlined in this paper also draw on the health services and psychotherapy literature to highlight issues involving process and procedure as social justice and their significance for advancing a …

The Effect Of Long-Term Thermal Exposure At Elevated Temperatures On Microstructures And Mechanical Properties In Centrifugally Casted Iron-Base Alloy, G Lothongkum, N Thaweepornkhasemsukh, P Wangyao
Journal of Metals, Materials and Minerals
This work has an aim to study and investigate the relationship between high temperature exposure conditions on microstructural evolution and mechanical properties in the iron-based alloy, Fe-30.8 Ni - 26.6 Cr alloy, strengthened by carbide precipitation. Two exposure temperatures (900 and 1000°C) with various thermal exposure times are introduced to the as-received alloy. After short-term exposure, it was found that the secondary carbides precipitated early near the primary carbides, which were chromium and niobium/titanium carbide networks. The secondary carbide precipitations were also found in the dendrite cores. The amounts of needle-like carbides and secondary carbide films increased with time and …
Student Affairs Professionals At Catholic Colleges And Universities: Honoring Two Philosophies, Molly A. Schaller, Kathleen M. Boyle
Student Affairs Professionals At Catholic Colleges And Universities: Honoring Two Philosophies, Molly A. Schaller, Kathleen M. Boyle
Journal of Catholic Education
Student affairs professionals are encouraged by their professional organizations to recognize the responsibility they have to their institutions by “supporting its mission, goals and policies” (American College Personnel Association [ACPA], 2006, p. 6) and by avoiding conflicts of interest between the self and the college or university (national Association of Student Personnel Administrators [NASPA], 1990), others point out that most students affairs professionals are educated at secular universities and experience little preparation regarding the Catholic intellectual tradition (Estanek, 2001). The purpose of this study was to explore the following questions: Are there student affairs professionals at Catholic colleges and universities …

The Identity Of American Catholic Higher Education: A Historical Overview, Matthew Garrett
The Identity Of American Catholic Higher Education: A Historical Overview, Matthew Garrett
Journal of Catholic Education
American Catholic higher education has faced and overcome challenges, both from American higher education and Vatican officials, in its long and rich history. Georgetown College’s founding in 1789 was the first of several Catholic higher education institutions created in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The 20th century brought the challenges of accrediting agencies and mixed communication with The Vatican, including Pope John Paul II’s (1990) Ex Corde Ecclesiae. This document attempts to clarify the nature of a Catholic institution’s identity.

Innowacyjność Projektów Open Source, Krzysztof Klincewicz
Innowacyjność Projektów Open Source, Krzysztof Klincewicz
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
Wyniki badań wskazują na relatywnie niski poziom nowatorstwa technicznego w analizowanej próbie projektów, wobec znaczącego zainteresowania programistów i użytkowników innowacyjnymi projektami. Artykuł omawia mechanizmy, które mogą ograniczać innowacyjność inicjatyw open source, postulując powołanie instytucji „brokerów pomysłów”, odgrywających role analogiczne do firm venture capital, zajmujących się oprogramowaniem komercyjnym.

Uwarunkowania Polityki Regionalnej Na Przykładzie Włoch, Dorota Stokowska
Uwarunkowania Polityki Regionalnej Na Przykładzie Włoch, Dorota Stokowska
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
Wyraźnie widać to na przykładzie Włoch, gdzie mamy do czynienia z trzema różnymi modelami rozwojowymi, a więc różnymi sposobami prowadzenia polityki regionalnej.
