Inside The Bankruptcy Judge's Mind, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski, Chris Guthrie, Andrew J. Wistrich Dec 2006

Inside The Bankruptcy Judge's Mind, Jeffrey J. Rachlinski, Chris Guthrie, Andrew J. Wistrich

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

In this paper, we extend our prior work on generalist judges to explore whether specialization leads to superior judicial decision making. To do so, we report the results of a study of federal bankruptcy judges. In one prior study of bankruptcy judges, Ted Eisenberg reported evidence suggesting that bankruptcy judges, like generalist judges, are susceptible to the "self-serving" or "egocentric" bias when making judgments. Here, we report evidence showing that bankruptcy judges are vulnerable to anchoring and framing effects, but appear largely unaffected by the omission bias, a debtor's race, a debtor's apology, and "terror management" or "mortality salience."'

A Sex-Linked Allele, Autosomal Modifiers And Temperature-Dependence Appear To Regulate Melanism In Male Mosquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Lisa Horth Dec 2006

A Sex-Linked Allele, Autosomal Modifiers And Temperature-Dependence Appear To Regulate Melanism In Male Mosquitofish (Gambusia Holbrooki), Lisa Horth

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

About 1% of male mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) express melanic (mottled-black) body coloration, which differs dramatically from the wild-type, silvery-gray coloration. Here, I report on the genetic inheritance pattern of melanic coloration, which indicates Y-linkage, and at least one autosomal modifier. Phenotypic expression of melanism is also affected by temperature. Expression is constitutive ( temperature insensitive) in some populations, inducible ( temperature sensitive) in others. Constitutive and inducible expression occur among geographically proximal populations. However, males from any single population demonstrate the same constitutive or inducible expression pattern as one another. The F1 males from inter-population crosses demonstrate temperature-related …

Corruption And Democratic Performance, Levente Littvay Dec 2006

Corruption And Democratic Performance, Levente Littvay

Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This dissertation introduces new quantitative methods to comparative politics. These include an approximately unbiased missing data treatment, a first order autoregressive multilevel model for the analysis of cross-sectional longitudinal data, approaches for the separation of cross-sectional and longitudinal predictor effects to identify aggregation bias and a model for the empirical analysis of causal direction. Methods are demonstrated on a model replicating past research on the causes of corruption adding democratic performance as a predictor, than a new model of democratic performance is developed to test Warren’s theoretical propositions that corruption is by nature undemocratic, and finally the causal direction between …

Design And Optimization Of Heat Spreaders And Selection Of Fan In Laptop, Kranthi Kumar Manne Sambaiah Dec 2006

Design And Optimization Of Heat Spreaders And Selection Of Fan In Laptop, Kranthi Kumar Manne Sambaiah

Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Theses - Archive

Technical advancements lead to the need for faster processors and reduced sizes in electronic systems. The urge for faster and compact systems leads to two major problems. Firstly over heating of chips which degrade the chip performance and secondly formation of heat spots on the surface which makes the user uncomfortable. Thermal management engineers, as a result have a major challenge in improving the cooling systems. In this research project simulation using the thermal modeling tool selected is Icepak. The prototype model of the laptop is designed, boundary conditions are applied and analysis is done. The results so obtained in …

A National Estimate Of The Cost Of Illness In Parkinson's Disease Using Retrospective Data Analysis, Katherine Anderson Dec 2006

A National Estimate Of The Cost Of Illness In Parkinson's Disease Using Retrospective Data Analysis, Katherine Anderson

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

The purpose of this study was to estimate the cost of illness of Parkinson’s disease in the United States. Direct medical expenditures, with the exception of nursing home costs, were estimated using data from the 1999-2003 Medical Expenditures Panel Survey Household Component (MEPS-HC). Nursing home costs were estimated using the Medical Expenditures Panel Survey Nursing Home Component (MEPS-NHC). Indirect costs for lost productivity due to missed work or bed-days (morbidity) were estimated using the MEPS-HC and the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Indirect costs for lost productivity due to death (mortality) were estimated using the National Vital Statistics System.

Taxonomic And Paleoclimatic Significance Of Late Cretaceous Wood From The San Juan Basin, New Mexico., Patrick J. Hudson Dec 2006

Taxonomic And Paleoclimatic Significance Of Late Cretaceous Wood From The San Juan Basin, New Mexico., Patrick J. Hudson

Student Work

Fossil wood has been demonstrated to be a powerful tool for studying past environments and biotas. Anatomical structure of silicified woods from Late Cretaceous sediments in northwestern New Mexico was used to conduct a taxonomic survey of plants with secondary growth and tree stature, as well as estimate paleoclimate. A total of 50 specimens compromising both gymnospermous and angiospermous remains were surveyed from deposits within the upper Fruitland and lower Kirtland formations of the San Juan Basin. Anatomical characters were used to designate distinct xylotypes, which were then linked to modern orders or families. Paleoclimate was estimated using three quantitative …

Sensory Integration: It's Not Just For Children, Renee Watling, Stefanie Bodison, Diana A. Henry, Heather Miller-Kuhaneck Dec 2006

Sensory Integration: It's Not Just For Children, Renee Watling, Stefanie Bodison, Diana A. Henry, Heather Miller-Kuhaneck

Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications

Sensory integration theory and intervention techniques were originally developed by A. Jean Ayres, PhD, OTR, beginning in the late 1960s. Her pioneering work integrated scientific information from neuroscience, psychology, occupational therapy, and human development in an effort to help explain the relationship among experience, brain development, and function. Ayres's theory of sensory integration provides a solid foundation for understanding the impact of sensation on occupational performance across the life span. Although much of the existing work related to sensory integration addresses occupational performance issues in children, some believe the theory and framework to be important across the life span. However, …

Criminal Law, Laura D. Hogue, Franklin J. Hogue

Mercer Law Review

The tension between prosecuting those charged with violating the laws of this state and defending the rights of those accused of having committed crimes sets the stage for the multitude of opinions from the Georgia Court of Appeals and the Georgia Supreme Court in the field of criminal law. As always, we strive to present cases that will assist attorneys in their practice, either by surveying cases that present careful reiteration of age-old principles or by surveying cases that alter old rules or establish new ones. We limit our Article to cases that affect the practice of criminal law but …

Evidence, Marc T. Treadwell Dec 2006

Evidence, Marc T. Treadwell

Mercer Law Review

The most significant news during the current survey year continued to be the major legislative developments discussed in last year's survey. Most significantly, the Georgia General Assembly, during its 2005 session, enacted Official Code of Georgia Annotated ("O.C.G.A.") section 24-9-67.1, which purports to adopt, more or less, the United States Supreme Court's decision in Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and its progeny, and creates special rules for expert testimony in medical negligence actions. In other words, Daubert has now come to Georgia and, as discussed below, there were both legislative and judicial developments regarding Georgia's new expert witness …
