Research Note: Assessing Household Service Losses With Joint Survival Probabilities, Victor Matheson, Robert Baade Dec 2006

Research Note: Assessing Household Service Losses With Joint Survival Probabilities, Victor Matheson, Robert Baade

Economics Department Working Papers

Traditional analyses of household service losses in personal injury and wrongful death litigation calculate the losses over the expected lifetime of the injured or deceased individual. In fact, the losses to the surviving family members are more accurately described by using joint survival probabilities of the injured or deceased person and their survivors, or a “joint life expectancy.” The use of joint probabilities will always serve to reduce expected household service losses and these reductions can be especially significant when the deceased is significantly younger than the surviving spouse or if the survivor has a relatively low remaining life expectancy.

Tectonic Control Of Subsidence And Southward Displacement Of Southeast Louisiana With Respect To Stable North America, Roy K. Dokka, Giovanni F. Sella, Timothy H. Dixon Dec 2006

Tectonic Control Of Subsidence And Southward Displacement Of Southeast Louisiana With Respect To Stable North America, Roy K. Dokka, Giovanni F. Sella, Timothy H. Dixon

School of Geosciences Faculty and Staff Publications

GPS data collected between 1995 and 2006 suggest that southeast Louisiana, including New Orleans and the larger Mississippi Delta, are both subsiding vertically and moving southward with respect to stable North America. Both motions are likely related due to their common tectonic setting. Subsidence in the New Orleans area occurs in part because it is located in the hanging wall of a large listric normal fault system that forms the northern boundary of a 7–10 km thick allochthon that is detached from stable North America. Southward motion of this allochthon relative to stable North America occurs at 2.2 ± 0.6 …

Implications Of Erm2 For Poland's Monetary Policy, Lucjan Orlowski, Krzysztof Rybinski Dec 2006

Implications Of Erm2 For Poland's Monetary Policy, Lucjan Orlowski, Krzysztof Rybinski

WCBT Faculty Publications

We propose an extension to the inflation targeting regime currently pursued by Poland. It incorporates the exchange rate stability constraints as imposed by the obligatory participation in the ERM2 that Poland needs to satisfy prior to adopting the euro. The modified policy is based on the forward-looking inflation targeting supplemented with the exchange rate stability objective. Its effective implementation depends on the determined long-term equilibrium exchange rate and the observed degree of exchange rate volatility. Both are empirically estimated by employing the Johansen cointegration tests and the threshold generalized autoregressive heteroscedasticity model with the in-mean extension and generalized error distribution …

Habitat Selection Responses Of Parents To Offspring Predation Risk: An Experimental Test, Joseph J. Fontaine, Thomas E. Martin Dec 2006

Habitat Selection Responses Of Parents To Offspring Predation Risk: An Experimental Test, Joseph J. Fontaine, Thomas E. Martin

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

The ability of nest predation to influence habitat settlement decisions in birds is widely debated, despite its importance in limiting fitness. Here, we experimentally manipulated nest predation risk across a landscape and asked the question, do migratory birds assess and respond to variation in nest predation risk when choosing breeding habitats? We examined habitat preference by quantifying the density and settlement date of eight species of migratory passerines breeding in areas with and without intact nest predator communities. We found consistently more individuals nesting in areas with reduced nest predation than in areas with intact predator assemblages, although predation risk …

The Impact Of The Internet On Airline Fares: How The Customer Viewed The Transition To Internet Distribution, William J. Brunger Dec 2006

The Impact Of The Internet On Airline Fares: How The Customer Viewed The Transition To Internet Distribution, William J. Brunger

Student Scholarship

Customers who use Internet websites find and buy lower fares than do those who use travel agents for similar trips, even though for most large U.S. airlines the fares and availability offered through both channels are the same (because of contractual obligations). Economic and marketing theory offers "transparency" and "lowered search costs" as primary explanations. In an effort to understand, describe and corroborate those explanations, we studied the behavioral changes implied by the Internet, asking customers how they have understood the transition to Internet travel purchase and how they believe they have changed their behavior, specifically about the impact of …

Writing A Thirty Minute Television Script, Mark L. Lauck Dec 2006

Writing A Thirty Minute Television Script, Mark L. Lauck

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

The goal of the project was to write a twenty two to thirty page script for a television series. The script is the basis to develop a series of thirty to sixty minute television shows. The initial script is centered around the eternal battle between good and evil. It‟s set in an environment where non baptized or lost souls come to rest before moving on to hell or heaven. The place is called Limbo. It‟s neutral ground between Heaven and Hell, where good and evil have equal influence. The only thing keeping the atmosphere from exploding is the Truce, a …

Three Perspectives On Neutrality And Drift In Molecular Evolution, Michael Dietrich Dec 2006

Three Perspectives On Neutrality And Drift In Molecular Evolution, Michael Dietrich

Dartmouth Scholarship

This article offers three contrasting cases of the use of neutrality and drift in molecular evolution. In the first, neutrality is assumed as a simplest case for modeling. In the second and third, concepts of drift and neutrality are developed within the context of population genetics testing and the development and application of the molecular clock.

An Analytical Performance Management Framework Enabiling Enterprise Strategy Management, Amr Abu-Suleiman Dec 2006

An Analytical Performance Management Framework Enabiling Enterprise Strategy Management, Amr Abu-Suleiman

Industrial, Manufacturing, and Systems Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Performance management has gained noticeable interest from both researchers and executive in the past two decades. Financial measures are no longer a primary emphasis for researchers and executives. One of the most popular performance management methodologies is the Balanced Scorecard. The Balanced Scorecard framework facilitates translating strategy into objectives and initiatives across four perspectives. These perspectives are financial, customer, internal processes, and learning and growth. The second component of the balanced scorecard is strategy maps. Strategy maps outline the cause and effect between the four perspectives, and illustrate the value creation process through transforming leading indicators (operational measures) into lagging …

Integration Without Unification: An Argument For Pluralism In The Biological Sciences, Sandra D. Mitchell, Michael R. Dietrich Dec 2006

Integration Without Unification: An Argument For Pluralism In The Biological Sciences, Sandra D. Mitchell, Michael R. Dietrich

Dartmouth Scholarship

In this article, we consider the tension between unification and pluralism in biological theory. We begin with a consideration of historical efforts to establish a unified understanding of evolution in the neo‐Darwinian synthesis. The fragmentation of the evolutionary synthesis by molecular evolution suggests the limitations of the general unificationist ideal for biology but not necessarily for integrating explanations. In the second half of this article, we defend a specific variety of pluralism that allows for the integration required for explanations of complex phenomena without unification on a large scale.

Evaluating Next Cell Predictors With Extensive Wi-Fi Mobility Data, Libo Song, David Kotz, Ravi Jain, Xiaoning He Dec 2006

Evaluating Next Cell Predictors With Extensive Wi-Fi Mobility Data, Libo Song, David Kotz, Ravi Jain, Xiaoning He

Dartmouth Scholarship

Location is an important feature for many applications, and wireless networks can better serve their clients by anticipating client mobility. As a result, many location predictors have been proposed in the literature, though few have been evaluated with empirical evidence. This paper reports on the results of the first extensive empirical evaluation of location predictors, using a two-year trace of the mobility patterns of over 6,000 users on Dartmouth's campus-wide Wi-Fi wireless network. The surprising results provide critical evidence for anyone designing or using mobility predictors. \par We implemented and compared the prediction accuracy of several location predictors drawn from …
