Robust Estimation Of Mahalanobis Distance In Hyperspectral Images, Eduardo C. Meidunas
Robust Estimation Of Mahalanobis Distance In Hyperspectral Images, Eduardo C. Meidunas
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation develops new estimation methods that fit Johnson distributions and generalized Pareto distributions to hyperspectral Mahalanobis distances. The Johnson distribution fit is optimized using a new method which monitors the second derivative behavior of exceedance probability to mitigate potential outlier effects. This univariate distribution is then used to derive an elliptically contoured multivariate density model for the pixel data. The generalized Pareto distribution models are optimized by a new two-pass method that estimates the tail-index parameter. This method minimizes the mean squared fitting error by correcting parameter values using data distance information from an initial pass. A unique method …
Vacuum Chamber Construction And Contamination Study Of A Micro Pulsed Plasma Thruster, Jacob H. Debevec
Vacuum Chamber Construction And Contamination Study Of A Micro Pulsed Plasma Thruster, Jacob H. Debevec
Theses and Dissertations
The micro pulsed plasma thruster (micro-PPT) is a simple and versatile electric thruster capable of performing multiple missions, from precise attitude control on standard satellites to primary propulsion for nanosatellites. In order to fill this role as both industry and government move toward utilizing smaller satellites, micro-PPTs first need to be thoroughly tested on the ground. This study examines the deposition profile and rate of particle emission from the thruster so that satellite designers understand any potential contamination issues with sensitive instruments and solar panels. Employing a newly assembled vacuum chamber system, four tests were completed with the micro-PPTs, and …
Integrated Conceptual Design Of Joined-Wing Sensor Craft Using Response Surface Models, Josh E. Dittmar
Integrated Conceptual Design Of Joined-Wing Sensor Craft Using Response Surface Models, Josh E. Dittmar
Theses and Dissertations
A multidisciplinary conceptual design and analysis of Boeing's joined-wing SensorCraft has been conducted. This analysis was completed using geometrical optimization, aerodynamic analyses, and response surface methodology on a composite structural model. Phoenix Integration's Model Center was used to integrate the sizing and analysis codes found in Raymer's text, "Aircraft Design: A Conceptual Approach" as well as those from the NASA derived conceptual design tool AirCraft Synthesis (ACSYNT), and a modified Boeing Finite Element Model (FEM). This research demonstrated the utility of integrated low-order models for fast and inexpensive conceptual modeling of unconventional aircraft designs.
Asymptotic Theory For Local Time Density Estimation And Nonparametric Cointegrating Regression, Qiying Wang, Peter C.B. Phillips
Asymptotic Theory For Local Time Density Estimation And Nonparametric Cointegrating Regression, Qiying Wang, Peter C.B. Phillips
Cowles Foundation Discussion Papers
We provide a new asymptotic theory for local time density estimation for a general class of functionals of integrated time series. This result provides a convenient basis for developing an asymptotic theory for nonparametric cointegrating regression and autoregression. Our treatment directly involves the density function of the processes under consideration and avoids Fourier integral representations and Markov process theory which have been used in earlier research on this type of problem. The approach provides results of wide applicability to important practical cases and involves rather simple derivations that should make the limit theory more accessible and useable in econometric applications. …

Cheating To Get Better Roommates In A Random Stable Matching, Chien-Chung Huang
Cheating To Get Better Roommates In A Random Stable Matching, Chien-Chung Huang
Computer Science Technical Reports
This paper addresses strategies for the stable roommates problem, assuming that a stable matching is chosen at random. We investigate how a cheating man should permute his preference list so that he has a higher-ranking roommate probabilistically. In the first part of the paper, we identify a necessary condition for creating a new stable roommate for the cheating man. This condition precludes any possibility of his getting a new roommate ranking higher than all his stable roommates when everyone is truthful. Generalizing to the case that multiple men collude, we derive another impossibility result: given any stable matching in which …

Global capitalism, which is born in the globalization process, has created consumption culture and consumer society— whose existence is seen just in the differences of their consumption commodities, and on and on consumes the signs and social status that marked on the commodities. In itself, global capitalism has the progressive-power which can help us in our daily live. However, the same progressiveness could bring the world in the unrecoverable and uncontrollable progressiveness. Progressive-power that inherent in the global capitalism has the tendency to lead the world into undetermined, injustice and hegemonic situation. This paper would discover this global capitalism phenomena, …

The Critique Of Arab Thought: Mohammed Arkoun's Deconstruction Method, Siti Rohmah Soekarba
Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
Mohammed Arkoun is one of international modern Islamic thinkers that his thought comes into Islamic thinking discourses in Indonesia recently. His Islamic thought was influenced by the modern philosophical concepts such as ‘myths’ of Ricouer, postmodern concepts like ‘discourse’ and ‘episteme’, which were developed by Foucault as well as ‘deconstruction’ of Derrida. If Derrida focused on deconstruction as a final concept, on the other hand Arkoun insisted that ‘deconstruction’ must be followed by ‘reconstruction’ of a discourse. Arkoun’s reconstruction leaves the limitation, the rigidity and deviation from the past. Arkoun proposes two ways: firstly it is ‘ijtihad’ and subsequently it …

Conformality And Q-Harmonicity In Carnot Groups, Luca Capogna, Michael Cowling
Conformality And Q-Harmonicity In Carnot Groups, Luca Capogna, Michael Cowling
Mathematics Sciences: Faculty Publications
We show that if f is a 1-quasiconformal map defined on an open subset of a Carnot group G, then composition with f preserves Q-harmonic functions. We combine this with a regularity theorem for Q-harmonic functions and an algebraic regularity theorem for maps between Carnot groups to show that f is smooth. We give some applications to the study of rigidity.

Phase-resolved VLT spectroscopy of the bursting low-mass X-ray binaries 4U 1636-536/V801 Ara and 4U 1735-444/V926 Sco is presented. Doppler images of the N III λ4640 Bowen transition reveal compact spots which we attribute to fluorescent emission from the donor star and enable us to define a new set of spectroscopic ephemerides. We measure K em = 277 ± 22 and 226 ± 22 kms -1 from the N III spots in V801 Ara and V926 Sco, respectively, which represent strict lower limits to the radial velocity semi-amplitude of the donor stars. Our new ephemerides provide confirmation that light-curve maxima in …

Technology trends are driving parallel on-chip architectures in the form of multi-processor systems-on-a-chip (MPSoCs) and chip multi-processors (CMPs). In these systems the increasing on-chip communication demand among the computation elements necessitates the use of scalable, nigh-bandwidth network-on-chip (NoC) fabrics. As transistor feature sizes are further miniaturized leading to rapidly increasing amounts of on-chip resources, more complicated and powerful NoC architectures become feasible that can support more sophisticated and demanding applications. Given tne myriad emerging software-hardware combinations, for cost-effectiveness, a system designer critically needs to prune this widening NoC design space to identify the architecture(s) that best balance(s) cost/performance, before the …

Mobile elements have been recognized as powerful tools for phylogenetic and population-level analyses. However, issues regarding potential sources of homoplasy and other misleading events have been raised. We have collected available data for all phylogenetic and population level studies of primates utilizing Alu insertion data and examined them for potentially homoplasious and other misleading events. Very low levels of each potential confounding factor in a phylogenetic or population analysis (i.e., lineage sorting, parallel insertions, and precise excision) were found. Although taxa known to be subject to high levels of these types of events may indeed be subject to problems when …
