Dominant Leadership Frames Of Reference For Active Indiana Public School Superintendents, Denis E. Ward Dec 2006

Dominant Leadership Frames Of Reference For Active Indiana Public School Superintendents, Denis E. Ward

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In this study, the researcher examined the leadership orientation of Indiana public school superintendents, utilizing the Leadership Orientations (Self) survey developed by Bolman and Deal (1997). This study sought to identify if a significant difference existed between a superintendent's choice of a dominant leadership frame of reference, and independent variables: gender, years of experience as a superintendent, school district setting, and initial educational level of training. Surveys were sent to 294 public school superintendents, a total of 162 or 55% of the superintendents participated in this study. This study, conducted in 2006, presented several findings. Over 72% of the superintendent …

Review Of Troubling Minds: The Cultural Politics Of Genius In The United States, 1840-1890 By Gustavus Stadler, Melissa J. Homestead Dec 2006

Review Of Troubling Minds: The Cultural Politics Of Genius In The United States, 1840-1890 By Gustavus Stadler, Melissa J. Homestead

Department of English: Faculty Publications

Though the title suggests it is, this book is not a cultural history of genius in the 19th-century US. Working in a high cultural-studies mode, Stadler (Haverford College) addresses questions like those addressed in a special issue of American Literature, "Aesthetics and the End(s) of Cultural Studies" (ed. by Christopher Castiglia and Russ Castronovo, v. 76, no. 3, September 2004). He uses an oddly assorted group of figures to map out a grand narrative of how the genius works to accommodate ordinary individuals to "the troubling, potentially shattering phenomena associated with modernity." In the first three chapters Stadler focuses …

Into The Labyrinth:Excursions And Applications For Creative Process, Janice M. Francisco Dec 2006

Into The Labyrinth:Excursions And Applications For Creative Process, Janice M. Francisco

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

This project surveyed, analyzed and organized implicit references to creativity in labyrinth literature to assess the validity and context within which the labyrinth could be used as a creativity tool to facilitate creative change. The work discovered explicit links to the creativity concepts, processes/tools, models, and outcomes required to facilitate creative, transformational change. Implications for future studies suggest the opportunity to qualify and quantify the increased effect on creative production when Creative Problem Solving techniques are applied to the labyrinth experience; the ability to generate “in-the-moment” benefits of incubation, and the placement of the labyrinth within the full repertoire of …

Exploring Appreciative Inquiry And Its Link To Creativity, Maren Baermann Dec 2006

Exploring Appreciative Inquiry And Its Link To Creativity, Maren Baermann

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

The purpose of this project was to gain a deeper insight into Appreciative Inquiry and to understand possible connections between this philosophy of change and creativity in general and the creative process in particular. The intention of combining a literature research with a practical application was fourfold: Firstly, this approach would provide insight into the philosophy of Appreciative Inquiry (AI) and its methods and tools. Secondly, equipped with the background knowledge on creativity available to me from the creative studies program and beyond, I expected to discover some parallels and links from AI to creativity during my literature research. Thirdly, …

Curious About Curiosity?, Sharon Walsh

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

There is a strong connection between creativity and curiosity. Curiosity is the foundation for creative people, creative process, and creative environment to foster innovation. To evaluate how curiosity stimulates creativity, this project explored the nature of curiosity and the role in creativity. The heart of this project is a review of literature, showing how psychological research has explored curiosity, and the application of curiosity as a central element in personal and business success. This literature review also unveils the key barriers to curiosity and how to overcome them using a variety of techniques.

Sexual Interactions: Why We Should Talk About Sex In Hci, Johanna Brewer, Joseph Jofish Kaye, Amanda Williams, Susan Wyche Dec 2006

Sexual Interactions: Why We Should Talk About Sex In Hci, Johanna Brewer, Joseph Jofish Kaye, Amanda Williams, Susan Wyche

Computer Science: Faculty Publications

Within the CHI community there is growing interest in moving beyond cognition and expanding into the social, emotional, and bodily aspects of the human-computer experience. Sex lies at the intersection of these concerns, and indeed outside of HCI, has become a central topic for anthropology, behavioral sciences, and other areas of intellectual inquiry. Examining sex and themes related to it has benefited these disciplines and we intend to understand how it can contribute to HCI. There is a tendency to desexualize technology, despite the presence of sex and sexuality in a variety of interactions, including the use of the internet …

Rethinking Dred Scott: New Context For An Old Case, Austin Allen Dec 2006

Rethinking Dred Scott: New Context For An Old Case, Austin Allen

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Scholars have misunderstood the context in which Dred Scott emerged. Leading historical interpretations of the decision have relied too heavily on accounts developed by antebellum Republicans and on mid-twentieth-century legal theory. This article offers an alternative account of Dred Scott's origins and argues that the decision emerged from a series of unintended consequences resulting from the Taney Court's efforts to incorporate a Jacksonian vision of governance into constitutional law. By 1857, this effort had generated tensions that made a sweeping decision like Dred Scott nearly unavoidable. The inescapable nature of Dred Scott carries implications for constitutional theorists, especially those …

The Effects Of Professional Development To Create Standards-Based Curriculum On Student Achievement In Fourth And Fifth Grade Mathematics Classrooms, Amy E. Mcbride Martin

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics determined there were several concepts or "standards" needed for quality teaching of math. While few dispute their importance, little support and resources are provided to help teachers understand and meet these standards. Long term professional development which focuses on how to teach with these standards could play a crucial role in improving the academic achievement of students. In this study, professional development opportunities were provided for teachers to explore the various elements of mathematics and develop a better understanding of how to teach them. The main purpose of the research was to study …

The "Beautiful Death" In The Smith Family, Samuel Brown Dec 2006

The "Beautiful Death" In The Smith Family, Samuel Brown

BYU Studies

Despite thoughtful attempts by Douglas Davies to situate death at the center of the Mormon “culture of salvation,” the exploration of death in early Mormonism has been somewhat limited to date, particularly as it relates to the Smith family and the earliest years of Mormonism. Against this relative silence stands the testimony of the Smiths themselves, who were deeply concerned with questions of mortality. Joseph Smith was unequivocal on this point during his 1843 funeral sermon for James Adams: “All men know that all men must die. What is the object of our coming into existence then dying and falling …

Good Faith In Contract Law : A Comparative Survey, C.M. Fong Dec 2006

Good Faith In Contract Law : A Comparative Survey, C.M. Fong

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The law of contracts has generally been understood in the context of the capitalistic market. Encouraged by the eighteenth century pre-market economy, ideas of freedom of contract bloomed in the nineteenth century laissez faire period. Among the results of this period were standard form contracts, exclusion clauses and a strict adherence to the construction of the terms agreed upon. However, the law of contract has undergone much transformation. It is submitted that what may be described as a former traditional treatment of contract law has now been gradually replaced by a modern treatment of contract law. This modern period of …

Evaluation Of A Telephone-Based Support Group Intervention For Female Caregivers Of Community-Dwelling Individuals With Dementia, Laraine Winter, Laura N. Gitlin Dec 2006

Evaluation Of A Telephone-Based Support Group Intervention For Female Caregivers Of Community-Dwelling Individuals With Dementia, Laraine Winter, Laura N. Gitlin

Center for Applied Research on Aging and Health Research Papers

Family caregivers, the "second victims" or hidden patients in dementia care, are at risk for social isolation, stress, depression, and mortality. Telephone-based support (telesupport groups) represents a practical, low-burden, low-cost source of emotional support. The present study evaluated the feasibility and effectiveness of professionally led telephone-based support groups for female family caregivers of community-dwelling dementia patients. Recruited through various community sources, 103 female caregivers were randomized to the telesupport group treatment or a control condition. Effects on caregiver burden, depression, and personal gains were evaluated at 6 months, the main end point. Older caregivers (≥65) in telesupport reported lower depression …

Issues During The Inversion Of Crosshole Radar Data: Can We Have Confidence In The Outcome?, William P. Clement Dec 2006

Issues During The Inversion Of Crosshole Radar Data: Can We Have Confidence In The Outcome?, William P. Clement

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

One method of assessing the confidence in modeled features is to compare the results from different inversion schemes. I use synthetic traveltimes calculated from a model of an unconfined aquifer to determine the reliability of crosshole tomography. I compare the inverted models from straight and curved ray approximations to wave propagation. I investigate the effects of added random noise, regularization, the starting model, and the reference model on the curved ray inversion method. I also investigate the effects of different grid sizes for the forward model and of limited ray coverage through the earth model. Understanding the effects of these …

Lipid droplet proteins of the PAT (perilipin, adipophilin, and TIP47) family regulate cellular neutral lipid stores. We have studied a new member of this family, PAT-1, and found that it is expressed in highly oxidative tissues. We refer to this protein as "OXPAT." Physiologic lipid loading of mouse liver by fasting enriches OXPAT in the lipid droplet tissue fraction. OXPAT resides on lipid droplets with the PAT protein adipophilin in primary cardiomyocytes. Ectopic expression of OXPAT promotes fatty acid-induced triacylglycerol accumulation, long-chain fatty acid oxidation, and mRNAs associated with oxidative metabolism. Consistent with these observations, OXPAT is induced in mouse …
