"If 3000 Men Were Unanimous On Any Subject, You Would Know At Once They Were Not Doctors": The Slow And Difficult Path To Professionalization Of Medicine In Texas, Calli Johnson Vaquera

History Theses - Archive

This thesis seeks to explain the growing dominance of allopathic medicine and the struggle of professional organizations, such as the Texas Medical Association, for the professionalization of medicine. Chapter One illustrates how nineteenth century practices, values, rivalries, and emphasis on local, rather than national concerns, continued to undermine the Texas Medical Association's goal of professionalization of medicine in Texas. Chapter Two of this paper begins at the dawn of the twentieth century and depicts how several strategic changes by the Texas Medical Association led to legislative victories. However, Chapter Three describes the limitations of professionalization of medicine in Texas. By …

Fabrication, Characterization And Hall Mobility Analysis Of Mos Devices With Low-K And High-K Dielectric Materials, Rakshit Agrawal Dec 2006

Fabrication, Characterization And Hall Mobility Analysis Of Mos Devices With Low-K And High-K Dielectric Materials, Rakshit Agrawal

Electrical Engineering Theses - Archive

Scaling of MOSFETS has led to leakage current problems in SiO2 dielectric based MOSFETS. This has led to the introduction of high-k dielectric materials which can afford greater physical thickness and achieve the same capacitance with lesser equivalent oxide thickness. But the high-k devices have certain limitations like channel mobility degradation. Mobility degradation in high-k MISFETS is discussed in this work using Hall measurements. The MOS devices were fabricated with SiO2 and HfSiO, on p-type silicon substrate. The fabrication process flow used for both type of MOS devices is explained. Characterization and analysis was performed for the determination of various …

Identifying Individual Eurasian Otters (Lutra Lutra) Based On Measurements Of Their Footprints Standardization Of The Method And Its Potential For Censusing And Monitoring Wild Otter Populations, Jitka Vetrovcova

Biology Theses - Archive

A method for identifying individual Eurasian otters (Lutra lutra L.) from measurements of their footprints was first tested by performing experiments with captive animals. Digital photographs were taken of imprints in mud of all paws of 12 known individuals. Using customized software, 131 distance, angle, and proportion measurements were generated and subjected to discriminant and canonical analyses. The stepwise procedures of discrimination were the principal statistical analyses used. Analyzing each foot separately while using all available imprints yielded 86-93% correct classification and 59-77% Jacknife cross-validation. The efficiency of these analyses was not significantly affected by randomly reducing the number of …

The Formation And Obduction Of Ophiolites Since The Late Precambrian, Stacey Metzler Dec 2006

The Formation And Obduction Of Ophiolites Since The Late Precambrian, Stacey Metzler

Earth & Environmental Sciences Theses - Archive

Ophiolite formation and emplacement has been episodic since the Late Precambrian. This research study examines ophiolites that formed during the Cenozoic, Mesozoic, Paleozoic and Late Precambrian. The ophiolites were plotted on paleogeographic reconstructions using PALEOMAP Project maps, and the ophiolite localities were analyzed by their temporal distribution in relation to the tectonic framework in which they were emplaced. The ophiolites appear to show episodic events linked to global plate reorganization. These episodes coincide with collisional events from the supercontinents of Gondwana and Pangea. The primary mechanisms of formation and emplacement proved to be mid-ocean ridge systems and back arc basins …

An Acoustic, Historical, And Developmental Analysis Of Sarikol Tajik Diphthongs, Pamela S. Arlund Dec 2006

An Acoustic, Historical, And Developmental Analysis Of Sarikol Tajik Diphthongs, Pamela S. Arlund

Linguistics & TESOL Dissertations - Archive

Sarikol Tajik has been reported to be an unusual language, containing up to twelve diphthongs and being the only language in the Gorno-Badakhshan family to not contain a short and long vowel distinction among monophthongs. However, the basis of such claims is not clear and could be accounted for by any of several factors. For example, different researchers have utilized different definitions of diphthongs, some researchers have (perhaps unknowingly) studied different dialects at different times, while others simply failed to account for the variation that is often found in languages in change. This dissertation reevaluates these claims and the potential …

Conversations In Private Spheres: Reconstructing Habermas's Universal Pragmatics And Ideal Speech Situation In Private Spheres, Phillip Dewayne Casteel

Sociology & Anthropology Theses - Archive

The author makes the argument that "public spheres" do not exist and demonstrates how Habermas's communicative actions, specifically Habermas's concepts of universal pragmatics and the ideal speech situation, can be reconstructed in private spheres to formulate a more viable philosophical methodology for validating truth, constructing self-identities, and sustaining the social.

Does An Exotic Invasive Grass Facilitate The Invasion Of A Woody Species Into Remnant Prairies?: A Study Of The Native, Prosopis Glandulosa And The Alien, Sorghum Halapense, Amie E. Treuer

Biology Theses - Archive

The native tree, Prosopis glandulosa, and the exotic grass, Sorghum halepense, have been invading native prairies in the Southwest U.S. since the 1800s. My objectives were to determine if S. halepense was driving shifts in the abiotic and biotic structure of a native prairie and in doing so facilitating the invasion of P. glandulosa. Both field and greenhouse experiments were established to address these objectives. The presence of S. halepense lowered light and increased soil N in the field relative to the native prairie. Plant species diversity and the number of woody species were higher in an invaded zone than …

Microorganism Species Richness And Diversity In Elfin Forest Bryophytes, December 2006, Andrew Miller Dec 2006

Microorganism Species Richness And Diversity In Elfin Forest Bryophytes, December 2006, Andrew Miller

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The elfin cloud forest in Monteverde, Costa Rica is an area with a species rich bryophyte community that harbors an unexplored community of microscopic organisms. I examined two morphospecies of bryophytes to compare their species richness of microorganisms living in the water the bryophyte holds. The factors that I examined that may affect microorganism’s species richness are pH and structural differences between the bryophyte morphospecies. Bryophyte water samples were collected, pH was measured, and protozoan species were counted and viewed under a compound microscope. Even though there were visible differences in structural complexity between moss morphospecies (longer shoot lengths and …

Maternal Defensive Behavior Of Umbonia Ataliba Treehoppers, December 2006, Sarah Anvik Dec 2006

Maternal Defensive Behavior Of Umbonia Ataliba Treehoppers, December 2006, Sarah Anvik

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

A population of Umbonia ataliba (Homoptera: Membracidae) located between 1300 and 1500 m in Monteverde, Costa Rica was studied from October to November 2006. The maternal defensive behavior exhibited by these subsocial insects toward nymphs of different developmental stages was experimentally investigated. The purpose of my study was to determine how the defensive behavior changed from eggs to adults and in response to two different predator types. I attached dead wasps to long wooden sticks and then simulated predator approaches toward family groups of eggs, second instar and fourth instars nymphs. I found that the defensive behavior by females guarding …

Microclimate Effects On Cyphellae Density In Sticta Lichens, December 2006, Aidée Casillas Dec 2006

Microclimate Effects On Cyphellae Density In Sticta Lichens, December 2006, Aidée Casillas

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The genus Sticta is a dominant lichen in tropical montane rainforest environments that is unique in possessing cyphellae, i.e. depressed pores involved in gas exchange, on the undersides of thalli. Microclimatic parameters such as relative humidity, canopy density and temperature were measured in relation to cyphellae density and colony size of S. filix in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Significant correlations were found relating canopy density to cyphellae density (R2 = 0.200, p = 0.0007, n = 54), (R2 = 0.213, p = 0.0016, n = 44), colony size to temperature (R2 = 0.239, p = 0.0002, n = 54), (R2 …

Nutrient Availability And Protist Abundance In Cloud Forest Bromeliads, December 2006, Cierra Y. Allen Dec 2006

Nutrient Availability And Protist Abundance In Cloud Forest Bromeliads, December 2006, Cierra Y. Allen

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Protists are microscopic organisms which play a vital role in nutrient degradation in tank bromeliads (Carrias et al. 2001). Their communities provide good subjects of study for the effects of nutrient availability in an ecosystem. One hypothesis says that the number of individuals that an ecosystem harbors is determined by the total energy that enters. This study tested the prediction that there will be a relationship between nutrient availability and abundance of protists in tank bromeliads. Data were collected among 25 bromeliads located within the Monteverde Cloud forest, Cerro Plano, Costa Rica and the following parameters were estimated: the number …

Species Composition Of Bats (Chiroptera) In Different Land- Use Mosaics, December 2006, Samantha Carter Dec 2006

Species Composition Of Bats (Chiroptera) In Different Land- Use Mosaics, December 2006, Samantha Carter

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Bats are an abundant and diverse group of species that can be used as indicators of habitat disturbance and to test the effects of land-use mosaics on an ecosystem. For 11 nights I used mist-nets to sample the bat assemblages in pastures, forest fragments, banana fields and coffee fields on the Finca Santamaría in Cañitas, Monteverde, Costa Rica. The differences between the land-use areas were not significant in the abundance of bats, species richness, species diversity or trophic diversity. However the species that were found, such as Glossaphaga commissarisi and Sturnia ludovici could be considered indicators of disturbed habitats suggesting …

Tropical Cloud Forest Canopy And Subcanopy Adapt To Different Light Environments By Regulating Photosynthetic Pigments, December 2006, Bradley D. Wallentine Dec 2006

Tropical Cloud Forest Canopy And Subcanopy Adapt To Different Light Environments By Regulating Photosynthetic Pigments, December 2006, Bradley D. Wallentine

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

The canopy and subcanopy of a Tropical Cloud Forest provide distinctly different light environments. Here, the amounts and ratios of photosynthetic pigments in leaves from a Cloud Forest canopy and subcanopy plants are compared. The pigments of forty canopy and subcanopy leaf samples are extracted using acetone and analyzed using a spectrophotometer. It is found that canopy and subcanopy plants possess equivalent means of concentrations of photosynthetic pigments per mass of leaf tissue (x = 0.21± 0.09 mg/g and 0.22 ± 0.11 mg/g, respectively). Therefore, plants from these two microhabitats invest the same quantity in major pigments for photosynthesis. However, …

Behavioral Changes Of The Slate-Throated Redstart (Myioborus Miniatus) And The Collared Redstart (Myioborus Toquatus) Along An Altitudinal Gradient In The Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve, December 2006, Emma Gabrielsson Dec 2006

Behavioral Changes Of The Slate-Throated Redstart (Myioborus Miniatus) And The Collared Redstart (Myioborus Toquatus) Along An Altitudinal Gradient In The Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve, December 2006, Emma Gabrielsson

Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation

Climate change has been found to affect the distribution of bird species in Monteverde, Costa Rica (Holmes 2000). In this study, the Slate-throated Redstart (Myioborus miniatus) and the Collared Redstart (Myioborus toquatus) were observed in the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve. Both altitudinal distribution and behavior were observed for both species. It was found that the Slate-throated Redstart has moved up in altitude. Further, observations for both species were compared using a chi square test, and there were significant differences between the two species, and also within the same species. This study shows that climate change is possibly responsible for the …

Gender Matters: Making The Case For Trans Inclusion, Nancy K. Knauer Dec 2006

Gender Matters: Making The Case For Trans Inclusion, Nancy K. Knauer

The University of New Hampshire Law Review

[Excerpt] “The transgender communities are producing an important and nuanced critique of our gender system. For community members, the project is self-constitutive and, therefore, has an immediacy that also marks the efforts of other marginalized groups who have attempted to make sense of the world through description, interrogation, and ultimately a program for transformation. The transgender project also has universalizing elements because, existing within the gender system, each one of us embodies a particular gender articulation. It is through this articulation that we define ourselves in relation to the gender we were assigned at birth, the gender we choose, the …

Likewise, holdings in capital cases that are common to …

Local Government Law, R. Perry Sentell Dec 2006

Local Government Law, R. Perry Sentell

Mercer Law Review

In the early 1950's, condemnation was rare and political suicide. A popular limited access road was being delayed by a farmer. When the State survey crew showed up, the farmer was standing at a fence with his shotgun. He never moved, but the survey crew would not go beyond the fence.
After the Attorney General, District Attorney, and Sheriff failed, the assignment devolved to the County Attorney. I walked up to the fence. "John, we have known each other a long time." "You take one step further," replied the farmer, "and we will not know each other for a longer …

Workers' Compensation, H. Michael Bagley, Daniel C. Kniffen, Katherine D. Dixon Dec 2006

Workers' Compensation, H. Michael Bagley, Daniel C. Kniffen, Katherine D. Dixon

Mercer Law Review

There was minimal legislation during the 2006 term of the Georgia General Assembly that impacted workers' compensation. In fact, most of the legislative changes could be characterized as general housekeeping measures. For example, Official Code of Georgia Annotated ("O.C.G.A.") section 34-9-104 was changed to make its wording consistent with that found in other sections of the Workers' Compensation Act. The mandate that the employee shall receive notice from the employer was changed to provide that the employer shall send notice to the employee. The time limit for submitting mileage expenses was clarified as running one year from the date that …

The Great Dance, Timothy G. Tollefson Dec 2006

The Great Dance, Timothy G. Tollefson

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Great Dance, an original composition for full orchestra, was inspired by the novel, Perelandra (1944), by C.S. Lewis. A major theme of Lewis's book is the fall of man into sin. The central character, Elwin Ransom, is sent to the planet Perelandra to help the humans there resist falling into temptation like they did on Thulcandra (Earth). Ultimately, Perelandra's Eve does not fall, and the book ends with the angels (eldila) proclaiming long, joyous hymns of praise to God (Maleldil). During this ending scene, Ransom and the two humans of Perelandra are allowed to see through time and the …
