Identification And Quantitative Studies Of Protein Immobilization Sites By Stable Isotope Labeling And Mass Spectrometry, Chunling Wa, Ronald Cerny, David S. Hage

A method was developed for characterizing immobilization sites on a protein based on stable isotope labeling and MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry. The model for this work was human serum albumin (HSA) immobilized onto silica by the Schiff base method. The immobilized HSA was digested by various proteolytic enzymes in the presence of normal water, while soluble HSA was digested in 18O-enriched water for use as an internal standard. These two digests were mixed and analyzed, with the 18O/16O ratio for each detected peptide then being measured. Several peptides in the tryptic, Lys-C, and Glu-C digests gave significantly …

We present new observations leading to an improved black hole mass estimate for the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593 as part of a reverberation-mapping campaign conducted at the MDM Observatory. Cross-correlation analysis of the Hβ emission-line light curve with the optical continuum light curve reveals an emission-line time delay of τcent=3.73+/-0.75 days. By combining this time delay with the Hβ line width, we derive a central black hole mass of MBH=(9.8+/-2.1)×106 Msolar, an improvement in precision of a factor of several over past results.

An important question in health services research is the estimation of the proportion of medical expenditures that exceed a given threshold. Typically, medical expenditures present highly skewed, heavy tailed distributions, for which a) simple variable transformations are insufficient to achieve a tractable low- dimensional parametric form and b) nonparametric methods are not efficient in estimating exceedance probabilities for large thresholds. Motivated by this context, in this paper we propose a general Bayesian approach for the estimation of tail probabilities of heavy-tailed distributions,based on a mixture of gamma distributions in which the mixing occurs over the shape parameter. This Article examines growing congressional interest in a specific legislative check on judicial power: controlling the types of cases judges are empowered to decide by expanding and/or contracting federal subject matter jurisdiction. Congress has recently sought to shape judicial power through a range of proposals that variously enlarge and compress federal subject matter jurisdiction. In 2004, for example, the House of Representatives voted to strip federal courts of jurisdiction over constitutional challenges to the Defense of Marriage Act and the Pledge of the Allegiance. Understanding sexual harassment as a form of discrimination “because of sex” has grown increasingly difficult as our understandings of both gender and sex have grown richer and more complex. This piece offers a new descriptive model for understanding gender bias in the context of sexual harassment law. The piece argues that two separate sets of ideas about gender have intersected to produce a new picture of gender “equality”: one that is separated from a binary model of men and women, but that nonetheless continues to disadvantage women as compared to men.
