Background Approximately 40,000 rescue and recovery workers were exposed to caustic dust and toxic pollutants following the 11 September 2001 attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC). These workers included traditional first responders, such as firefighters and police, and a diverse population of construction, utility, and public sector workers. Methods To characterize WTC-related health effects, the WTC Worker and Volunteer Medical Screening Program was established. This multicenter clinical program provides free standardized examinations to responders. Examinations include medical, mental health, and exposure assessment questionnaires; physical examinations; spirometry; and chest X rays. Results Of 9,442 responders examined between July 2002 and …

Shear-Wave Velocity Model Of Near-Surface Sediments, Site Response, And Building Damage: 1886 Charleston, South Carolina Earthquake, Cedric Fairbanks

An updated small-strain shear wave velocity (Vs) model of near-surface sediments is constructed using measurements from over 90 investigation sites in the greater Charleston area. It is constructed by separating the Vs measurements into six major geologic units. The six units are: 1) man-made fills, 2) Holocene and late Pleistocene deposits, 3) the Wando Formation, 4) the Ten Mile Hill beds, 5) the Penholoway Formation and the Daniel Island beds, and 6) Tertiary deposits. Median Vs values for these units in the top 25 m are 145 m/s, 111 m/s, 189 m/s, 176 m/s, 285 m/s and 399 m/s, respectively. …

BACKGROUND: Talins are large, modular cytoskeletal proteins found in animals and amoebozoans such as Dictyostelium discoideum. Since the identification of a second talin gene in vertebrates, it has become increasingly clear that vertebrate Talin1 and Talin2 have non-redundant roles as essential links between integrins and the actin cytoskeleton in distinct plasma membrane-associated adhesion complexes. The conserved C-terminal I/LWEQ module is important for talin function. This structural element mediates the interaction of talins with F-actin. The I/LWEQ module also targets mammalian Talin1 to focal adhesion complexes, which are dynamic multicomponent assemblies required for cell adhesion and cell motility. Although Talin1 is …

The Theoretical Basis For Addressing Poverty Through Mixed-Income Development, Mark L. Joseph, Henry S. Webber

This article examines the theoretical foundations upon which the rationale for mixed-income development as a strategy to confront urban poverty is built. The authors focus on four propositions that draw from theories on social networks, social control, culture and behavior, and the political economy of place. They assess available evidence about the relative importance of the four theoretical propositions. They conclude that the most compelling propositions are those that suggest that some low-income residents may benefit from a higher quality of life through greater informal social control and access to higher quality services. While little is known concerning the events surrounding the commission of the Isenheim Altarpiece or of the artist known to us as Master Matthias Grünewald, much can be ascertained about the message of the Altarpiece through careful study of the socio-historical-religious context from which the work was commissioned and iconographic analysis of the images portrayed by Master Matthias. This thesis explores iconographic metaphors for birth and sacrifice, metaphors which work to create a theological dialogue about Christian redemption within the nine painted panels and the underlying sculpture that makes up the Isenheim Altarpiece. Large 3-D Deflection And Force Analysis Of Lateral Torsional Buckled Beams, Robert Parley Chase

This thesis presents research on the force and deflection behavior of beams with rectangular cross-sections undergoing lateral torsional buckling. The large 3-D deflection path of buckling beam tips was closely approximated by circular arcs in two planes. A new chain algorithm element was created from pseudo-rigid-body segments and used in a chain calculation that accurately predicted the force deflection relationship of beams with large 3-D deflections.

The structural study of diluted magnetic semiconductors is important for interpreting the ferromagnetic behavior associated with the materials. In the present work, a series of low concentration Mn-doped ZnO thin films synthesized by pulsed laser deposition was studied by electron microscopy. All films show the wurtzite structure with (001) preferred growth orientation on the Si substrate. Electron diffraction experiments indicate the deterioration of the growth orientation in some areas of the films with increasing Mn concentration, and the existence of a secondary phase, of Mn₂O₃-type, in the films with larger Mn concentrations. This research is a study of the dynamics of the heart valves and the blood using numerical computational technique. This numerical technique is known as the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) and is introduced in a finite element environment. By means of a mesh movement method, the ALE uses separate sets of reference systems to study the fluid-structure interaction of the heart. The fluid domain is most conveniently described with respect to an Eulerian reference frame while a Lagrangian formulation is more appropriate for the structure domain. An Econometric Analysis Of Determinants Of Foreign Direct Investment: A Panel Data Study For Africa, Evarist Twimukye

In the last two decades, foreign direct investment has become a major source of investment capital for developing countries. This study evaluates the determinants of foreign direct investment in Africa using fixed effects feasible generalized least squares model for 45 countries covering the period 1990-2003. The study finds gross domestic product, literacy rate, exchange rate and population size to have positive relationship with foreign direct investment. But, inflation rate and remoteness have negative relationship with foreign direct investment. Finally, central, eastern and western regions have lower foreign direct investment than southern region.

West-central Florida has supplied much of the national and global demand for phosphate for over 100 years. The two main tributaries of the Alafia River, the North and South Prongs, have been extensively modified by the strip mining, benefaction, and chemical processing activities associated with the phosphate mining industry. Using aerial photos, an analysis of landscape change in the South Prong Alafia River drainage basin (357.4 km2) between 1940, 1970, and 2004 was conducted. The prefrontal cortex (PFC) is known to subserve working memory (WM) processes. Brain imaging studies of WM using delayed response tasks (DRTs) have shown memory-load-dependent activation increases in dorsal prefrontal cortex (PFC) regions. These activation increases are believed to reflect manipulation of to-be-remembered information in the service of memory-consolidation. This speculation has been based on observations of similar activation increases in tasks that overtly require manipulation by instructing participants to reorder to-be-remembered list items. Employers identify leadership as a desirable characteristic of athletic trainers. The Board of Certification's Role Delineation Study advocates "knowledge of leadership styles," and "preparation for leadership roles" should be a "distinguishing characteristic" of post-certification athletic training education. The athletic training literature was weak in identifying leadership competencies or content important for practice or for inclusion in athletic training education programs (ATEPs).
