Hmong Oral History Project

Born in Long Tieng, Laos in 1966, Lee Pao Xiong lived with his father, who had already been recruited into the Hmong army at age 12. His mother and grandparents lived nearby. After the fall of Long Tieng in May 1975, Xiong and his family spent more than a year in Thai refugee camps before migrating to the United States in 1976. Settling first in Indiana, his family moved to the Twin Cities in 1979. Xiong earned a B.S. in Political Science from the University of Minnesota, an M.A. from Hamline University, and is currently pursuing his Ph.D. He has …

Give Me Equity Or Give Me Death - The Role Of Competition And Compensation In Building Silicon Valley, Richard A. Booth

Working Paper Series

In this essay, I argue that the preeminence of Silicon Valley as an incubator of technology companies is attributable to equity compensation. Ronald Gilson, relying on the work of AnnaLee Saxenian and others who have noted the tendency of Silicon Valley employees to job hop, has suggested that California law prohibiting the enforcement of non-compete agreements was a major factor in the rise of Silicon Valley (and the demise of Route 128). I extend this line of thought by suggesting that California employers may have relied on equity compensation as a substitute way to bind employees. I argue further that …

The traditional expectations of the project team are for the processes of engineering, procurement, construction, and start-up to be expertly administered. However, these performance criteria can be satisfied yet still not meet the ultimate business needs of the owner. The purpose of this thesis was to determine ways to improve the likelihood of achieving owner's business objectives. Fifty-one questionnaire survey forms were analyzed to obtain data for thirty-three pre-project planning activities. A data analysis concluded with a degree of statistical significance that for thirteen of the thirty-three activities, the more successful projects, as defined by the satisfaction of the business …

Emeritus status is the rank awarded by the University of Nebraska Board of Regents to an employee at the time of retirement in recognition of substantial service rendered to the University in teaching, research, extension, or administration in a professional field. It may also be awarded to a retired administrator whose work impinges directly on the educational program. For faculty the recommendation is initiated by a vote of the departmental faculty with the endorsement of the chair and dean. A Cross-Layer Approach To Increase Spatial Reuse And Throughput For Ad Hoc Networks, Steven Boyd

Ad hoc networks employing adaptive-transmission protocols can alter transmission parameters to suit the channel environment. Channel-access mechanisms are used to govern temporal use of the transmission medium amongst nodes. Effective operation of a channel-access mechanism can improve the ability of an adaptive-transmission protocol to accommodate changing channel conditions. The interoperability of these two mechanisms motivates cross-layer design of adaptive-transmission protocols.
In this thesis we examine the integration of a new channel-access mechanism with a physical-layer adaptive-transmission protocol to create a cross-layer protocol with enhanced capabilities. Using A Spline To Model The Motion Of A 4-Man Fireteam During Building Clearing Exercises, Marshall Werner

This paper examines the problem of tracking positions of a fireteam (4-5 men) as they perform building clearing exercises in order to predict future motion od the team. This was done by examining the team as a single entity rather than 4 or 5 separate entities. A team model was used under the assumption that the team stays together as a group and moves in specific patterns. The model chosen for this experiment was a spline curve. This spline curve allowed for movement in straight lines through hallways as well as curving around corners.

Paying Attention To Welfare: Supplemental Security Income, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, And The Incentives Of Parents, Jason Rudbeck

The Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program is the only welfare program that extends cash benefits to children for being blind or disabled. The largest growth in the program has occurred towards children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Using in-house data from the National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), this research measures parents` sensitivity to having their children diagnosed with ADHD given increases in real SSI payments. Children who are more likely to receive SSI benefits given income and living condition are also more elastic to increases in payments through becoming diagnosed with ADHD. The effects of frost action introduce many challenges in the design and construction of roadways in cold regions throughout the United States. The penetration of frost into pavement structures can lead to differential frost heave during winter and thaw weakening during spring. Both of these damage mechanisms lead to premature pavement distress, structural deterioration, and poor ride quality. Because the availability of naturally occurring non-frost-susceptible pavement base materials is rapidly diminishing in many areas while project budgets remain largely inadequate, pavement engineers are utilizing alternative materials and techniques to minimize such damage.
