The Guantanamo Protective Order, Brendan M. Driscoll Jan 2006

The Guantanamo Protective Order, Brendan M. Driscoll

Fordham International Law Journal

This Note analyzes the Green Protective Order, and the arguments of its proponents and critics. It aims to facilitate broader public awareness of an issue that, while not commanding newspaper headlines, may actually have greater consequence for Guantánamo prisoners and their counsel than those issues that do attract mass media attention. Part I provides a brief background on protective orders in general and their use in cases involving confidential national security, before examining the Green Protective Order in detail. Part II considers, in detail, three different assessments of the Green Protective Order named above, as these positions have been articulated …

Comparing Science Teaching Styles To Students' Perception Of Scientists, Kevin D. Finson, Jon E. Pedersen, Julie A. Thomas Jan 2006

Comparing Science Teaching Styles To Students' Perception Of Scientists, Kevin D. Finson, Jon E. Pedersen, Julie A. Thomas

Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications

Many educational researchers seem to concur with the idea that, among other factors, the teacher's teaching style has some impact on student learning and the perceptions students develop about science learning and the work of scientists. In this study, nine middle grades teachers' teaching styles were assessed using the Draw-a-Science-Teacher-Teaching Test Checklist (DASTT-C) and categorized along a continuum from didactic to inquiry/constructivist in orientation. Students' (n = 339) perceptions of scientists were determined using the Draw-a-Scientist-Test Checklist (DASTC). Teachers' teaching styles and their students' perceptions of scientists were then compared using nonparametric correlational methods. Results showed that no significant correlation …

Correlates Of Distances Traveled To Use Recreational Facilities For Physical Activity Behaviors, Gavin R. Mccormack, Billie Giles-Corti, Max K. Bulsara, Terri J. Pikora

Medical Papers and Journal Articles

Background: Information regarding how far people are willing to travel to use destinations for different types of recreational physical activity behaviors is limited. This study examines the demographic characteristics, neighborhood opportunity and specific-physical activity behaviors associated with distances traveled to destinations used for recreational physical activity.

Methods: A secondary analysis was undertaken of data (n = 1006) from a survey of Western Australian adults. Road network distances between respondents' homes and 1) formal recreational facilities; 2) beaches and rivers; and 3) parks and ovals used for physical activity were determined. Associations between distances to destinations and demographic characteristics, neighborhood opportunity …

Peer Facilitated Eating Disorder Prevention: A Randomized Effectiveness Trial Of Cognitive Dissonance And Media Advocacy, Carolyn Becker, Lisa M. Smith, Anna C. Ciao Jan 2006

Peer Facilitated Eating Disorder Prevention: A Randomized Effectiveness Trial Of Cognitive Dissonance And Media Advocacy, Carolyn Becker, Lisa M. Smith, Anna C. Ciao

Psychology Faculty Research

This study investigated the effectiveness of two interventions in reducing eating disorder risk factors under naturalistic conditions in sororities. Based on previous research, the campus sororities chose to implement a semi-mandatory, two-session eating disorder prevention program to all new sorority members (N=90) during sorority orientation. To facilitate evaluation, sororities agreed to random assignment of new members to either a cognitive dissonance or media advocacy intervention. Undergraduate peer facilitators ran the groups. Although both interventions had an effect, cognitive dissonance generally was superior at eight-month followup. Results further support the utility of cognitive dissonance in reducing eating disorder risk factors, and …

Am I Blue? Depressed Mood And The Consequences Of Self Focus For The Interpretation And Recall Of Ambiguous Words, Paula T. Hertel, L. El-Messidi Jan 2006

Am I Blue? Depressed Mood And The Consequences Of Self Focus For The Interpretation And Recall Of Ambiguous Words, Paula T. Hertel, L. El-Messidi

Psychology Faculty Research

In two experiments, dysphoric and nondysphoric students first concentrated on either self-focused or other-focused phrases and then performed an ostensibly unrelated task involving the interpretation of homographs with both personal and impersonal meanings. In Experiment 1, they constructed sentences for the homographs; dysphoric students' sentences were more emotionally negative (although not more personal) in the self-focused condition than in the other-focused condition. In Experiment 2, they freely associated to the homographs, and the percentage of personal meanings reflected by the associations revealed an effect of self versus other focus that depended on mood group. Following free associations, they attempted to …

The Physical And Psychosocial Health Status Of Clients With Spinal Cord Injury Awarded Damages In Litigation, Irmo Marini, Eva Miller

School of Rehabilitation Services & Counseling Faculty Publications

As the specialization of life care planning continues to evolve, a greater emphasis is occurring from both within the discipline and externally for empirically driven data to support life care planner opinions. One area remaining unresolved pertains to life care planners’ knowledge of how, or if, their life care plan has been implemented post-settlement. A related area pertains to the daily physical and psychosocial health issues of persons with spinal cord injury which can impact the development of their life care plan. The present pilot study explored injury related characteristics and the post-settlement expenditures of former life care plan clients …

Moral Implications Of Darwinian Evolution For Human Reference Based In Christian Ethics: A Critical Analysis And Response To The "Moral Individualism" Of James Rachels, Stephen Bauer

Dissertations

The topic. This dissertation explores and analyzes James Rachels's efforts to prove that Darwin's theory of evolution has catastrophic implications for traditional Christian ethics.

The purpose. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore and evaluate the question of whether or not protology affects ethics. In particular, I propose to distill the implications of evolutionary views of origins for ethics, mainly in reference to the issue of human preference over nature in ethics. I propose to disclose Rachels's understanding of the implications of evolution on human preference (greater protections for human beings over non-humans) in ethics (such as biblical-Christian ethics), …

Dancing Around The Fire (Book Review), Kristina M. Kays

Faculty Publications - Psychology Department

Reviews the book, "What Therapists Don't Talk About and Why: Understanding Taboos That Hurt Us and Our Clients" by Kenneth Pope, Janet Sonne, and Beverly Greene (see record 2006-03273-000). What truly hauntstherapists in private practice are not the basic countertransference issues discussed in most graduate training programs but the unspoken secrets of their inner world. Too often, therapists are preoccupied by sexual responses to clients, hostile thoughts, and desire for professional approval, but training and peer discussions rarely focus on these forbidden topics. "What TherapistsDon't Talk About and Why: Understanding Taboos That Hurt Us and Our Clients" is an updated …

Can We Teach Emotional Intelligence?, Kelly B.T. Chang Jan 2006

Can We Teach Emotional Intelligence?, Kelly B.T. Chang

Faculty Publications - Psychology Department

Although there are hundreds of programs in thousands of schools that claim to enhance some aspect of emotional intelligence (EI), research has yet to show that it can in fact be enhanced. This study used proven behavioral self-modification techniques in semester-long Psychology of Adjustment courses to help undergraduate college students improve their EI. Students used the techniques in their own self-change projects, choosing EI topics such as assertiveness, empathy, self-regard, and emotion management. The course also included instruction on EI, as well as on theory and strategies from rational emotive therapy. Students in the treatment group (n=79) and control group …

How Strong Collaboration Between Legal And Social Service Professionals Will Improve Outcomes For Trafficking Survivors And The Anti-Trafficking Movement, Heather C. Moore Jan 2006

How Strong Collaboration Between Legal And Social Service Professionals Will Improve Outcomes For Trafficking Survivors And The Anti-Trafficking Movement, Heather C. Moore

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

This article will discuss and demonstrate how attorneys can protect and yield better legal outcomes for their clients by collaborating with social service professionals specifically, and by reconsidering their own roles in serving trafficking survivors--not only as legal advocates, but as informal mental health advocates. This article also presents one model of comprehensive service delivery, that of the Coalition to Abolish Slavery ("CAST"), in which legal and social services complement and support each other within one agency to better serve clients.

Prosecuting Peacekeepers In The Icc For Human Trafficking, Melanie O'Brien Jan 2006

Prosecuting Peacekeepers In The Icc For Human Trafficking, Melanie O'Brien

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

This article hopes to examine the issue of whether a crime committed by a peacekeeper satisfies the elements required under Article 5 of the Rome Statute for valid subject-matter jurisdiction, which would lead to the possibility of prosecuting peacekeepers in the ICC, pending satisfaction of the requirements of Article 12 of the Rome Statute. Would the crimes of trafficking, enforced prostitution, sexual slavery, or rape fall within the definitions of crimes against humanity or war crimes? To determine these issues, the elements of the individual crimes enumerated in the Rome Statute must first be analyzed.

Assessing Human Trafficking In Canada: Flawed Strategies And The Rhetoric Of Human Rights, Constance Macintosh Jan 2006

Assessing Human Trafficking In Canada: Flawed Strategies And The Rhetoric Of Human Rights, Constance Macintosh

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

This paper will present the argument that Canada's rhetoric of protecting the human rights of trafficking victims is at odds with its practice. Trafficking victims are treated essentially the same as any other irregular migrant, and the specter of trafficking is invoked to justify acts which arguably violate Canada's international human rights obligations. This paper will offer an overview of what little information is available regarding the extent of trafficking in Canada, and then will conduct a close examination of the Canadian approach to trafficking and its victims. In addition to considering the logic and consequences of the Canadian strategy …

Data Warehousing And Decision Making In Higher Education In The United States, David Lester Heise Jan 2006

Data Warehousing And Decision Making In Higher Education In The United States, David Lester Heise

Dissertations

Problem. Compared to the business world, higher education has a lower level of acceptance and a lower rate of adoption of data warehousing for decision making. Studies into the way data warehouses are used in higher education and the extent to which they are used are hard to find. Accordingly, this research examines the use of data warehousing in higher education and its role in decision making.

Method. Internet survey research method was used in this study. I asked college and university presidents to provide me with contact details of senior decision makers and technology managers from their institutions. …
