Empowering International And Culturally Diverse Honours And Project Students Through Mentoring Activities, L J. Armstrong, S Singh

EDU-COM International Conference

This paper reports on an initiative to develop a successful school based student mentoring program in the context of a Computer Science based school which has a high proportion of international and culturally diverse student population. A review of literature was made of three areas of research related to mentoring and peer support. This provided evidence for the role of mentoring and peer support in empowering student learning, with particular emphasis on how mentoring can provide both social and academic support; on the role of mentoring in different contexts; within the Computer Science field and within an international and culturally …

Teaching English As A Foreign Language To Grade 6 Students In Thailand: Cooperative Learning Versus Thai Communicative Method, Sutaporn Chayaratheee, Russell F. Waugh

EDU-COM International Conference

This study compared a cooperative learning method of teaching English to Prathom (grade) 6 secondary students in Thailand and a communicative method. Rasch-generated linear scales were created to measure reading comprehension (based on 28 items with 300 students) and attitude and behaviour to learning EFL (based on 24 items with 300 students). The data for both scales had a good fit to a Rasch measurement model, good separation of measures compared to the errors, good targeting, and the response categories were answered consistently and logically, so that valid inferences could be drawn. Ninety students from three secondary schools in Ratchaburi, …

Effects Of Teaching In English At Swedish Universities, Ingrid Johansson, Bosse Jonsson Jan 2006

Effects Of Teaching In English At Swedish Universities, Ingrid Johansson, Bosse Jonsson

EDU-COM International Conference

English plays an increasingly important role at Swedish universities but not much is known about its effects on the quality of teaching and learning. Therefore, a large research project which is collaborative and interdisciplinary, crossing language studies in humanities with education, is being planned. One of several aims of the project is to study the consequences of teaching in English on learning and study achievements. A few pre-studies have been carried out in order to develop more detailed research questions. Two of the pre-studies will be presented in this paper. In one of them, ten university teachers with Swedish as …

More than eighty-five percent of international students in New Zealand are Asian in origin. The level of satisfaction of Asian international students with their learning experiences in New Zealand has been of enormous concern for the New Zealand export education industry. The results of this current research, based on a qualitative research approach conducted at a New Zealand tertiary institution, provide a critical summary of some important and yet challenging issues in teaching Asian students. This study found that Asian students were overall satisfied with their learning experiences at the university in terms of educational quality and programme offering. Asian …

Bringing Teaching To Life: Using Multimedia To Engage And Empower Students, Nonofo Losike-Sedimo Jan 2006

Bringing Teaching To Life: Using Multimedia To Engage And Empower Students, Nonofo Losike-Sedimo

EDU-COM International Conference

The perspective taken in this paper is that technology is a powerful tool for aiding in university instruction but not as an end in itself. Therefore, institutions can use it to empower and engage students for intellectual, emotional, social and economic development. The paper presents the results of a study on the impact of simulations and virtual reality on university students‘ achievement and their attitude. These are then discussed in the context of specific media characteristics. The researcher used a mixed method design and examined hypotheses for effect as well as analysed qualitative data for stated assumptions. The underlying theory …

Mission (Im-)Possible? Increasing The Participation Of Female Students In University Computing Courses, Iwona Miliszewska, Anne Venables, Grace Tan Jan 2006

Mission (Im-)Possible? Increasing The Participation Of Female Students In University Computing Courses, Iwona Miliszewska, Anne Venables, Grace Tan

EDU-COM International Conference

In 1990 the Australian Federal government set a target for a 40% enrolment rate of females in all non-traditional areas of study including computer science. In view of this target, the low enrolment of females in computer science at Victoria University is a persisting concern: enrolment rates have continued to decline from 30% in the early 1990s to less than 20% in recent years, despite significant attempts to arrest the decline by introducing annual student recruitment events such as school visits, career nights, and University Open Days. This suggested that the issue of encouraging females to study computing needed to …

The Integration Of Professional Communication Skills Into Engineering Education, Dorthy Missingham Jan 2006

The Integration Of Professional Communication Skills Into Engineering Education, Dorthy Missingham

EDU-COM International Conference

Conventional Engineering curriculum is strongly focused on the development in students of technical knowledge and skills. However, in recent years, employers have increasingly acknowledged that this traditional preparation of Engineering students‘ is inadequate, as graduates lack the wide range of written and spoken communication skills required to engage with members of other professional groups and with the broader community. Recognition of the important role that communicative competence plays in professional success within the engineering industry has, as a result, led to a number of tertiary institutions developing curricula to address these needs. This paper presents a successful integrative Engineering Communication …

Improving Community Water Conservation Behaviour In Chachoengsao, Thailand, Kuakul Sathapornvajana, Lynne Cohen, Neil Drew, Julie Ann Pooley

EDU-COM International Conference

The issue of water supply throughout the world is of concern for many reasons. A major factor is water pollution by industry, agriculture and residential sectors. Less than 3% of water is fresh and potable, while the remainder is saline. It is projected that by the year 2025, two-thirds of the world‘s population will encounter moderate to severe water shortages. As a result of unsustainable development over the past decade, Thailand has faced pollution problems as well as the depletion of many natural resources. These problems have impacted the country‘s main rivers (Chaopraya River, Thachine River, and the Bangpakong River), …

Iternational Postgraduate Student Experience: How Can We Enhance Transition Management?, K Singh, L Armstrong

EDU-COM International Conference

Within the broad scope of literature addressing the issue of student experience very limited attention has been given to examining the particular issues impacting international students. This paper draws attention to transition as an aspect impacting the international postgraduate (IP) student experience within a School of Computer and Information Science with a high proportion of IP students (65-75%). Literature relating to both, first year experience and international onshore education provided a frame of reference for a pilot survey (N=58) investigating student perceptions and attitudes on choice of study destination; academic orientation, application and coping; future orientation; social integration and belonging; …

Self-Injury: An Analysis Of The Behavior, Causes, And Effective Treatments, Lindsey Huyser Jan 2006

Self-Injury: An Analysis Of The Behavior, Causes, And Effective Treatments, Lindsey Huyser

Honors Program Theses

Society has also become obsessed with the quest for a perfect body (Lader & Conterio, 1998). Often, this causes great damage for the self-esteem of women because they are pressured to live up to these high expectations. Self-injury is a way to make women feel better. There has been a rise in women working outside of the home as well, making latchkey children a normal occurrence. Children are often home by themselves when they return from school in today's world, which leaves them with nobody to talk to when problems arise. Self-injury can become a way to heal these issues.

The Effects Of Divorce On Children And Interventions For All Members Of The Family Unit, Laurie Arieux Jan 2006

The Effects Of Divorce On Children And Interventions For All Members Of The Family Unit, Laurie Arieux

Honors Program Theses

ln 1989 more than 1 million children, on average, were affected by divorce in the United States and this number has risen to over 40% of the population under 18 in recent years (Amato & Keith, 1991 a). The assumption is that this number will continue to grow. When one considers that there are also parents who suffer from these stresses the number grows substantially into something worthy of much consideration. With so many people being affected by this growing trend the desire to understand the differences it has on families is growing. Divorce changes children in many ways including …

What's Wrong And Who Cares? Reader Reaction To Error, Susan Rashid Horn Jan 2006

What's Wrong And Who Cares? Reader Reaction To Error, Susan Rashid Horn

Open Access Dissertations

As much as readers profess to be bothered by its presence, little is known about error except that it is irksome. This study demonstrates that error has practical consequences. While error may not significantly affect reading comprehension, it does affect reading time and reading patterns, and its presence correlates with a negative construction of the writer. Prior studies about error have been conducted in formats where errors are highlighted and readers are queried about the degree of "bothersomeness." But Williams has demonstrated there is a difference between reading for error and reading for content. So in this study, errors were …

Effects Of Transcendental Medication On Blood Pressure, Joanna C. Bovee Jan 2006

Effects Of Transcendental Medication On Blood Pressure, Joanna C. Bovee

Modern Psychological Studies

Many prevention and treatments methods exist for hypertension, but not all are effective or easy to incorporate into one's life. Stress-reduction methods, including Transcendental Meditation (TM), has been suggested as such a method, but have received inconsistent reviews about its effect on blood pressure. This literature review of twelve clinical studies concludes patients who practice TM can significantly reduce blood pressure. The technique was found to be effective for groups at high risk for hypertension, such as African-Americans, as well as low-risk groups. TM also appears to be more effective than progressive muscle relaxation, another popular stress-management technique. TM should …

The Relationship Between Self-Efficacy And Health Promoting Behaviors, Illness Severity, Mental Health, And Perceived Quality Of Life In Multiple Sclerosis Patients, Anna Finn

Modern Psychological Studies

Multiple sclerosis is an incurable, debilitating, nervous system disease, which causes are largely unknown, and which affects hundreds of thousands of people across the United States. Early research suggests the impact that psychological factors can have on a patient's physical and mental health status. Self-efficacy, the belief in one's ability to cope with a situation, has been found to offer beneficial and protective effects in patients suffering from conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, sickle cell disease, and fibromylagia. This comprehensive literature review sought to look at psychological research that has considered the relationship between self-efficacy and health promoting behaviors, symptom …

The present study investigated the effects of strength of social network on physiological stress during a cognitive task. Participants were randomly assigned to a timed or untimed word search task. The dependent variables were heart rate and participants' perceptions of the difficulty of their word search task. Participants in the high stress condition reported performing significantly worse on the word search task than those in the low stress condition. Participants perceived the task to be less difficult when in the high social network group as compared to the low social network group. While there were no significant findings for the …

Age-Related Expectations Of Child Witness Credibility, Meredith Allison, R. C. L. Lindsay Jan 2006

Age-Related Expectations Of Child Witness Credibility, Meredith Allison, R. C. L. Lindsay

Modern Psychological Studies

Age-related expectations of credibility were examined in a child witness study. The within-subjects factors were witness age (4, 8, 12, 16, 20 years) and type of credibility rating (honesty vs. cognitive ability). The between subjects factors were type of assault (physical vs. sexual), role of witness (victim vs. bystander), and participant gender. Men (n = 31) and women (n = 61) from a first-year psychology course read vignettes describing a crime (adapted from Nightingale, 1993) and rated the witness' cognitive ability and honesty at each age (adapted from Ross, Lindsay, & Marsil, 1996). The results indicated that the witness was …
