Shoes First: The Process Of Designing Costumes For Shakespeare's "Measure For Measure"., Lesley Sorenson Jan 2006

Shoes First: The Process Of Designing Costumes For Shakespeare's "Measure For Measure"., Lesley Sorenson

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This paper documents the deepening of my understanding of the costume design process for Measure for Measure. Prior to this journey of discovery there was little recognition of all steps or their impact on the final product. While analyzing the results during the thesis process I re-learned the importance of organization, problem solving, multi-tasking and communication in the evolution of making art. Part of this discovery also included the greater awareness of how detailed each aspect must be; how focused and how committed one must be to take design to a higher level. These ideas are documented throughout the processes …

"The Relapse Of Reconstruction:" Railroad -Building, Party Warfare And White Supremacy In Blue Ridge North Carolina, 1854-1888., Paul D. Yandle Jan 2006

"The Relapse Of Reconstruction:" Railroad -Building, Party Warfare And White Supremacy In Blue Ridge North Carolina, 1854-1888., Paul D. Yandle

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

In the early twentieth century, the men who had led North Carolina's mountain counties through Civil War and Reconstruction were praised by those who followed them for two "accomplishments:" bringing much-needed railroad service to the mountains and preserving white rule in North Carolina. The completion of the Western North Carolina Railroad to the Tennessee line in 1882 was, indeed, noteworthy for the perseverance it showed over physical and political obstacles. The preservation of white rule was equally if not more noteworthy for the suffering it brought to African Americans statewide. However, both railroad service and white supremacy were seen at …

Epr And Endor Studies Of Point Defects In The Nonlinear Optical Crystals Rubidium Titanium Oxide Phosphate And Potassium Titanium Oxide Arsenate., Yongquan Jiang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Four studies of point defects RbTiOPO4 and KTiOAsO4 crystals are described in this dissertation. In the first study, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and electronnuclear double resonance (ENDOR) are used to characterize the complex hyperfine patterns exhibited by the primary radiation-induced trapped hole center in single crystals of RbTiOPO4 (commonly referred to as RTP). These defects are produced at 77 K by irradiating with x rays, and they are destroyed by raising the temperature above approximately 170 K. In this center, the hole resides on a bridging oxygen ion located between two titanium ions and is stabilized by a nearby rubidium …

Electron Bernstein Wave Simulations And Comparison To Preliminary Nstx Emission Data, Josef Preinhaelter, Jakub Urban, Pavol Pavlo, Gary Taylor, Steffi Diem, Linda L. Vahala, George Vahala Jan 2006

Electron Bernstein Wave Simulations And Comparison To Preliminary Nstx Emission Data, Josef Preinhaelter, Jakub Urban, Pavol Pavlo, Gary Taylor, Steffi Diem, Linda L. Vahala, George Vahala

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Simulations indicate that during flattop current discharges the optimal angles for the aiming of the National Spherical Torus Experiment (NSTX) antennae are quite rugged and basically independent of time. The time development of electron Bernstein wave emission (EBWE) at particular frequencies as well as the frequency spectrum of EBWE as would be seen by the recently installed NSTX antennae are computed. The simulation of EBWE at low frequencies (e.g., 16 GHz) agrees well with the recent preliminary EBWE measurements on NSTX. At high frequencies, the sensitivity of EBWE to magnetic field variations is understood by considering the Doppler broadened electron …

Femtosecond Pulsed Laser Deposition Of Indium On Si (100), Mohamed A. Hafez, Hani E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Deposition of indium on Si(100) substrates is performed under ultrahigh vacuum with an amplified Ti:sapphire laser (130 fs) at wavelength of 800 nm and laser fluence of 0.5 J/cm2. Indium films are grown at room temperature and at higher substrate temperatures with a deposition rate of similar to 0.05 ML/pulse. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction (RHEED) is used during the deposition to study the growth dynamics and the surface structure of the grown films. The morphology of the grown films is examined by ex situ atomic force microscopy (AFM). At room temperature indium is found to form epitaxial two-dimensional …

Quantum Dot Infrared Photodetector Fabricated By Pulsed Laser Deposition Technique, Mohammed Hegazy, Tamer Refaat, Nurul Abedin, Hani Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Pulsed laser deposition is used to fabricate multilayered Ge quantum-dot photodetector on Si(100). Growth was studied by reflection high-energy electron diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The difference in the current values in dark and illumination conditions was used to measure the device sensitivity to radiation. Spectral responsivity measurements reveal a peak around 2 μm, with responsity that increases three orders of magnitude as bias increases from 0.5 to 3.5 V.

The Formal Laplace-Borel Transform Of Fliess Operators And The Composition Product, Yaqin Li, W. Steven Gray Jan 2006

The Formal Laplace-Borel Transform Of Fliess Operators And The Composition Product, Yaqin Li, W. Steven Gray

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

The formal Laplace-Borel transform of an analytic integral operator, known as a Fliess operator, is defined and developed. Then, in conjunction with the composition product over formal power series, the formal Laplace-Borel transform is shown to provide an isomorphism between the semigroup of all Fliess operators under operator composition and the semigroup of all locally convergent formal power series under the composition product. Finally, the formal Laplace-Borel transform is applied in a systems theory setting to explicitly derive the relationship between the formal Laplace transform of the input and output functions of a Fliess operator. This gives a compact interpretation …

Growth Of Ge Quantum Dots On Si(100)-(2×1) By Pulsed Laser Deposition, M. S. Hegazy, H. E. Elsayed-Ali Jan 2006

Growth Of Ge Quantum Dots On Si(100)-(2×1) By Pulsed Laser Deposition, M. S. Hegazy, H. E. Elsayed-Ali

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Self-assembled germanium quantum dots (QDs) were grown on Si(100)-(2×1) by pulsed laser deposition. In situ reflection-high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and postdeposition atomic force microscopy are used to study the growth of the QDs. Several films of different thicknesses were grown at a substrate temperature of 400 °C using a Q-switched Nd:yttrium aluminum garnet laser (λ= 1064 nm, 40 ns pulse width, 23 J/cm 2 fluence, and 10 Hz repetition rate). At low film thicknesses, hut clusters that are faceted by different planes, depending on their height, are observed after the completion of the wetting layer. With increasing film thickness, …

A Profile Of Charter Operators: A Survey Of On-Demand Carriers, Robert W. Kaps, David A. Newmyer Jan 2006

A Profile Of Charter Operators: A Survey Of On-Demand Carriers, Robert W. Kaps, David A. Newmyer

Journal of Aviation/Aerospace Education & Research

Several years ago, one of the authors made a presentation before the National Air Transportation Association Convention in Tampa, Florida concerning the elements of Aircraft Charter Pricing. In research for that project, it was found that a dearth of information was available to adequately describe some of the elements to be considered in making a blanket pricing arrangement. Particularly vexing was the fact that at the meeting itself several of the operators and operator representatives present were unfamiliar with the type of business structure employed by the Fixed Base operator (FBO) and some were unfamiliar with the make up of …

Creative Commons And The New Intermediaries, Michael W. Carroll Jan 2006

Creative Commons And The New Intermediaries, Michael W. Carroll

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

This symposium contribution examines the disintermediating and reintermediating roles played by Creative Commons licenses on the Internet. Creative Commons licenses act as a disintermediating force because they enable end-to-end transactions in copyrighted works. The licenses have reintermediating force by enabling new services and new online communities to form around content licensed under a Creative Commons license. Intermediaries focused on the copyright dimension have begun to appear online as search engines, archives, libraries, publishers, community organizers, and educators. Moreover, the growth of machine-readable copyright licenses and the new intermediaries that they enable is part of a larger movement toward a Semantic …

The Movement For Open Access Law, Michael W. Carroll Jan 2006

The Movement For Open Access Law, Michael W. Carroll

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

My claim in this contribution to this important symposium is that the law and legal scholarship should be freely available on the Internet, and copyright law and licensing should facilitate achievement of this goal. This claim reflects the combined aims of those who support the movement for open access law. This nascent movement is a natural extension of the well-developed movement for free access to primary legal materials and the equally well-developed open access movement, which seeks to make all scholarly journal articles freely available on the Internet. Legal scholars have only general familiarity with the first movement and very …

Effects Of The Use Of Soybean Oil As Cutting Fluid On The Surface Finish For Turning Operations, Carlos Alberto TeráN Yengle Jan 2006

Effects Of The Use Of Soybean Oil As Cutting Fluid On The Surface Finish For Turning Operations, Carlos Alberto TeráN Yengle

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Concerns about the long term supply of petroleum, the instability of its prices, and growing environmental issues have led to a variety of legislative and public support for the use of agricultural commodities in industrial applications. This study is of importance because of environmental and health hazards concerns, and the possibility of reducing operating costs with the elimination of disposal of used cutting oil that the use of biodegradable oil offers to the metal-cutting operations.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of the use of an experimental soybean-based oil as a cutting fluid on surface finish …

An Investigation Into Microwave Energy To Soften Scrap Tire Rubber Aiding Existing Mechanical Separation Processes, Russell Jon Lucas Jan 2006

An Investigation Into Microwave Energy To Soften Scrap Tire Rubber Aiding Existing Mechanical Separation Processes, Russell Jon Lucas

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This research was performed to soften scrap tires to aid in their transformation from whole tires to valuable streams of rubber and steel for reuse in industry. Actual shredded scrap rubber was used in this experiment to determine if this highly variable material could yield consistent results if subjected to volumetric heating from a magnetron emitting microwave energy.

A consumer microwave oven was used to heat this material. This oven had its control circuitry modified by using a programmable logic controller to operate the energy exposure time. The sample's surface temperature was measured utilizing a non contact infrared thermometer. All …

A Critical Appraisal Of The Roles Of Public Sector Employees In The Provision Of Educational Buildings Under A Public Private Partnership (Ppp) In The Republic Of Ireland, Louis Gunnigan, David Eaton

Conference papers

Public-Private Partnership (PPP) has now become established as a key element in the Irish Government’s strategy in the provision of school buildings. Specific guidelines have been implemented to define the public sector role in a PPP in Ireland and these guidelines represent a significant change in role from those in the traditional schools procurement process. Through a literature review, this paper maps the PPP process and establishes the new tasks that public sector employees must carry out in the adoption of PPP. The new knowledge, skills and competence (KSC) required to carry out these tasks are noted. Whilst existing literature …

A Critical Appraisal Of The Opportunities Currently Available For A More Energy Conscious Approach To Residential Building In Ireland, John Mcdonagh, Louis Gunnigan Jan 2006

A Critical Appraisal Of The Opportunities Currently Available For A More Energy Conscious Approach To Residential Building In Ireland, John Mcdonagh, Louis Gunnigan

Conference papers

This paper focuses on the particular advantages which off-site housing construction has over the more traditional methods of building especially where the efficient use and conservation of energy is concerned. It will explain why modern innovative methods of house construction not only have a clear advantage environmentally (big reductions in CO2 emissions) but also deliver substantial benefits to the end user or householder especially in the form of lower energy bills.

The ecological argument for off-site systems is a very powerful one but on its own is still unlikely to be the prime driver for widespread implementation. That growth is …

One For All: The Problem Of Uniformity Cost In Intellectual Property Law, Michael W. Carroll Jan 2006

One For All: The Problem Of Uniformity Cost In Intellectual Property Law, Michael W. Carroll

Scholarly Articles in Law Reviews & Journals

Intellectual property law protects the owner of each patented invention or copyrighted work of authorship with a largely uniform set of exclusive rights. In the modern context, it is clear that innovators' needs for intellectual property protection vary substantially across industries and among types of innovation. Applying a socially costly, uniform solution to problems of differing magnitudes means that the law necessarily imposes uniformity cost by underprotecting those who invest in certain costly innovations and overprotecting those with low innovation costs or access to alternative appropriability mechanisms.

This Article argues that reducing uniformity cost is the central problem for intellectual …

The Most Dangerous Profession, Rebecca Roiphe Jan 2006

The Most Dangerous Profession, Rebecca Roiphe

Articles & Chapters

This article chronicles the history of the accounting profession and explains how it has consistently failed to preserve transparency in the markets and protect the public good. I argue that the culture of the profession is due in part to the failure of earlier administrative agencies to retain private auditors for public functions such as ratemaking. Drawing on this insight, I suggest that the culture of professions in general is shaped by the work that professionals do and functions that the profession has historically served.
