Community Beyond Honors: Butler University’S Community Fellows Program, Margaret Brabant, Anne Wilson
Honors in Practice Online Archive
Campus collaboration between academic areas is often encouraged but can be difficult to implement in practice. Opportunities for instructional collaboration where the goals of each program must be met are even more challenging. Despite such challenges, a collaboration known as the Community Fellows Program was initiated between the Honors Program and the Center for Citizenship and Community at Butler University. The Community Fellows Program has not only brought together academic and programmatic areas at Butler but also introduced Indianapolis community leaders to honors students, faculty, and staff. While our students have appreciated the community leaders’ “real world” experiences, the community …

2006 Devils Lake Basin Water Management Plan
2006 Devils Lake Basin Water Management Plan
United States Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District
It was determined by the Devils Lake Basin Joint Water Resource Board (Joint Board) in early 2002, that a need existed to update the 1995 plan, and to re-evaluate its objectives based on more current and enhanced data. That report supercedes the 1995 Devils Lake Basin Water Management Plan (Water Plan) that was a product of the Devils Lake Basin Conceptual Water Management Plan. When the 2002 plan was completed, it was decided by the Joint Board to update the plan at least every three years. There are three main objectives of the 2006 update of the Water Plan; the …
Self-Oscillating Cmos Class D Amplifier Optimized For Low Output Power, Daniel J. White
Self-Oscillating Cmos Class D Amplifier Optimized For Low Output Power, Daniel J. White
Open Access Master's Theses (through 2010)
The continual push for smaller size and decreased power consumption has prompted the adoption of class D amplification for speaker and headphone drivers in portable media devices. With proper design, the power efficiency of this amplifier type can exceed any other topology over the whole output range, even at low output levels.
Simple amplifier topologies are not the norm for these integrated circuit (IC) class D amplifiers. This thesis shows that such complexity is not necessary for good performance.A recently presented simple self-oscillating topology is mapped into a standard CMOS technology and fabricated in a 0.5 micron process. The output stage is …

A New Species Of Neohaematotrephus (Digenea: Echinostomiformes: Cyclocoelidae) In The Spotted-Sandpiper Actitis Macularia (Charadriiformes: Scolopacidae) From Venezuela, David Zamparo, Daniel R. Brooks
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Fischthal and Nasir (1974) reported Neohaematotrephus brasilianum (as Cyclocoelum brasilianum) in the spotted sandpiper Actitis macularia from Venezuela. Three voucher specimens from that report, deposited in the United States National Parasite Collection, however, differ from N. brasilianum by having the cirrus sac on the sinistral side of the body, which resembles N. facioi, N. arayae, and N. gendrei. The new species is similar to N. brasilianum by having vitelline follicles extending well anterior to the intestinal bifurcation and by having a short and laterally displaced cirrus sac whose posterior end does not reach the intestinal bifurcation, …

The Importance Of Vertical And Shared Leadership Within New Venture Top Management Teams: Implications For The Performance Of Startups, Michael D. Ensley, Keith M. Hmieleski, Craig L. Pearce
Department of Management: Faculty Publications
The current study investigated the relative influence of vertical versus shared leadership within new venture top management teams on the performance of startups using two different samples. Vertical leadership stems from an appointed or formal leader of a team (e.g., the CEO), whereas shared leadership is a form of distributed leadership stemming from within a team. Transformational, transactional, empowering, and directive dimensions of both vertical and shared leadership were examined. New venture performance was considered in terms of revenue growth and employee growth. The first sample was comprised of 66 top management teams of firms drawn from Inc. Magazine’s …

Piezoelectromagnetic Waves In A Ceramic Plate Between Two Ceramic Half-Spaces, S. N. Jiang, Q. Jiang, X. F. Li, S. H. Guo, H. G. Zhou, J. S. Chang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
We analyze the propagation of piezoelectromagnetic waves guided by a plate of polarized ceramics between two ceramic half-spaces. An exact dispersion relation is obtained, which reduces to a few known elastic, electromagnetic, and quasistatic piezoelectric wave solutions in the literature as special cases. Numerical solutions to the equation that determines the dispersion relation show the existence of guided waves. The results are useful for acoustic wave and microwave devices.

Calibrating The Wealth And Health Of Nations: Trade, Health, And Foreign Policy After The Wto's First Decade, David P. Fidler
Articles by Maurer Faculty
One of the most important themes to emerge from the relationship between trade and health in the first ten year's of the WTO's existence is the challenge of achieving policy coherence. This task is a foreign policy challenge for WTO Members, which requires looking at the relationship between trade and health against the backdrop of the making and implementing of foreign policy. Policy coherence has generally become a major concern for foreign policymakers because post-Cold War trends, such as accelerating globalization, seriously challenge traditional foreign policy assumptions, practices, and institutions. Part of this new context for foreign policy involves the …

Laparoscopy is abdominal surgery performed with long tools inserted through small incisions. The use of small incisions reduces patient trauma, but also eliminates the surgeon’s ability to view and touch the surgical environment directly. These limitations generally restrict the application of laparoscopy to procedures less complex than those performed during open surgery. This paper presents a theoretical and experimental analysis of miniature, wheeled, in vivo robots to support laparoscopy. The objective is to develop a wireless mobile imaging robot that can be placed inside the abdominal cavity during surgery. Such robots will allow the surgeon to view the surgical environment …

Lost In Translation: The Economic Analysis Of Law In The United States And Europe, Kenneth G. Dau-Schmidt, Carmen L. Brun
Articles by Maurer Faculty
In this Essay, we examine the reasons why the economic analysis of law has not flourished in European countries as it has in the United States. In particular, we focus on three European countries-the United Kingdom, Germany, and France. We argue that differences in culture, the legal system, and the academy have led to differing degrees of success of the law and economics movement in each country. We speculate that, although there is currently less interest in the economic analysis of the law in Europe than in the United States, European interest could dramatically increase if scholars adopt more communitarian …

Efficient Inverted Polymer Solar Cells, G. Li, C.-W. Chu, V. Shrotriya, Jinsong Huang, Y. Yang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
We investigate the effect of interfacial buffer layers—vanadium oxide (V2O5) and cesium carbonate (Cs2CO3)—on the performance of polymer solar cells based on regioregular poly-(3-hexylthiophene) and [6,6]-phenyl C60 butyric acid methyl ester blend. The polarity of solar cells can be controlled by the relative positions of these two interfacial layers. Efficient inverted polymer solar cells were fabricated with the structure of indium tin oxide (ITO)/Cs2CO3/polymer blend/vanadium oxide (V2O5)/aluminum (Al). Short-circuit current of 8.42 mA/cm2, open-circuit voltage of 0.56 V, and power conversion efficiency of …

Improving The Power Efficiency Of White Light-Emitting Diode By Doping Electron Transport Material, Jinsong Huang, Wei-Jen Hou, Juo-Hao Li, Gang Li, Yang Yang
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Faculty Publications
Highly efficient white light emission was realized via the partial energy transfer from blue host polyfluorene (PF) to orange light emission dopant rubrene. A more balanced charge transport was achieved by adding an electron transport material, 2-(4-biphenylyl)-5-(4-tertbutylphenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole (PBD), into the PF-rubrene system to enhance the electron transportation. Efficiency improvement by as much as a factor of 2 has been observed through the addition of PBD. These devices can easily reach high luminance at low driving voltages, thus achieving high power efficiency at high luminance (14.8, 13.5, and 12.0 lm/W at the luminances of 1000, 2000, and 4000 cd/m2, …
The Earth All Around Us: Selected Building Stone In Lincoln, Nebraska. A Walking Tour, William J. Wayne
The Earth All Around Us: Selected Building Stone In Lincoln, Nebraska. A Walking Tour, William J. Wayne
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Stone has been a primary building material for millennia. Cities, therefore, are treasure troves of earth materials. A wide variety of stones from many places are used for walls, as foundations to support entire buildings, as trim, and more recently as cladding (facing, an overlay). The Earth science teacher can find, in the limited space of an urban environment, a superb collection of stones with which to introduce students to these materials. The surfaces of stones on the outsides of buildings illustrate the durability and the vulnerability of each kind of stone to the local climate. And the history of …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Slicing For Model Reduction Of Concurrent Object-Oriented Programs, Matthew B. Dwyer, John Hatcliff, Matthew Hoosier, Venkatesh Ranganath, Robby, Todd Wallentine
School of Computing: Book Chapters
Model checking techniques have proven effective for checking a number of non-trivial concurrent object-oriented software systems. However, due to the high computational and memory costs, a variety of model reduction techniques are needed to overcome current limitations on applicability and scalability. Conventional wisdom holds that static program slicing can be an effective model reduction technique, yet anecdotal evidence is mixed, and there has been no work that has systematically studied the costs/benefits of slicing for model reduction in the context of model checking source code for realistic systems. In this paper, we present an overview of the sophisticated Indus program …

A Maximum-Likelihood Approach To Symbolic Indirect Correlation, Ashutosh Joshi, George Nagy, Daniel Lopresti, Sharad C. Seth
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Symbolic Indirect Correlation (SIC) is a nonparametric method that offers significant advantages for recognition of ordered unsegmented signals. A previously introduced formulation of SIC based on subgraph-isomorphism requires very large reference sets in the presence of noise. In this paper, we seek to address this issue by formulating SIC classification as a maximum likelihood problem. We present experimental evidence that demonstrates that this new approach is more robust for the problem of online handwriting recognition using noisy input.

On Reoptimizing Multi-Class Classifiers, Kun Deng, Chris Bourke, Stephen Scott, Robert E. Schapire, N. V. Vinodchandran
School of Computing: Technical Reports
Significant changes in the instance distribution or associated cost function of a learning problem require one to reoptimize a previously learned classifier to work under new conditions. We study the problem of reoptimizing a multi-class classifier based on its ROC hypersurface and a matrix describing the costs of each type of prediction error. For a binary classifier, it is straightforward to find an optimal operating point based on its ROC curve and the relative cost of true positive to false positive error. However, the corresponding multi-class problem (finding an optimal operating point based on a ROC hypersurface and cost matrix) …
Modeling Dual Polarization Wireless Fading Channels Using Quaternions, B. J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki, J. Seberry
Modeling Dual Polarization Wireless Fading Channels Using Quaternions, B. J. Wysocki, Tadeusz Wysocki, J. Seberry
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Faculty Publications (to 2015)
In the letter we describe signal transmitted between two dual-polarized antennas using a quaternion notation. The channel can then be modeled by a single quaternion gain, instead of a matrix of four complex gains as it is done in a classical approach. The model is very useful as it allows for a simple accommodation of any polarization twist between the transmit and receive antennas, as well as, modeling random fading in both polarizations with or without cross-polar scattering.
Automated Generation Of Context-Aware Tests, Zhimin Wang, Sebastian Elbaum, David Rosenblum
Automated Generation Of Context-Aware Tests, Zhimin Wang, Sebastian Elbaum, David Rosenblum
School of Computing: Technical Reports
The incorporation of context-awareness capabilities into pervasive applications allows them to leverage contextual information to provide additional services while maintaining an acceptable quality of service. These added capabilities, however, introduce a distinct input space that can affect the behavior of these applications at any point during their execution, making their validation quite challenging. In this paper, we introduce an approach to improve the test suite of a context-aware application by identifying context-aware program points where context changes may affect the application’s behavior, and by systematically manipulating the context data fed into the application to increase its exposure to potentially valuable …
Scaling A Dataflow Testing Methodology To The Multiparadigm World Of Commercial Spreadsheets, Marc Randall Fisher Ii, Gregg Rothermel, Tyler Creelan, Margaret Burnett
Scaling A Dataflow Testing Methodology To The Multiparadigm World Of Commercial Spreadsheets, Marc Randall Fisher Ii, Gregg Rothermel, Tyler Creelan, Margaret Burnett
School of Computing: Technical Reports
Spreadsheets are widely used but often contain faults. Thus, in prior work we presented a dataflow testing methodology for use with spreadsheets, which studies have shown can be used cost-effectively by end-user programmers. To date, however, the methodology has been investigated across a limited set of spreadsheet language features. Commercial spreadsheet environments are multiparadigm languages, utilizing features not accommodated by our prior approaches. In addition, most spreadsheets contain large numbers of replicated formulas that severely limit the efficiency of dataflow testing approaches. We show how to handle these two issues with a new dataflow adequacy criterion and automated detection of …

Department of Communication Studies: Faculty Publications
Human communities can use collective deliberation to make considered decisions regarding their relationship to technology. Such reflection is particularly warranted, because as sociologist Langdon Winner (1986) observes, "technological artifacts have politics" (p. 19). In other words, choices about technology carry political implications, because patterns of sociality are embedded within technical tools (McMillan and Hyde, 2000). Fortunately, Winner notes, "by far the greatest latitude of choice exists the very first time a particular instrument, system, or technique is introduced" (Winner 1986, p. 29). Winner's insight punctuates the salience and timeliness of this forum exchange, which comes at a moment when the …
Dynamic Lightpath Scheduling In Next-Generation Wdm Optical Networks, Lu Shen, Ajay Todimala, Byrav Ramamurthy, Xi Yang
Dynamic Lightpath Scheduling In Next-Generation Wdm Optical Networks, Lu Shen, Ajay Todimala, Byrav Ramamurthy, Xi Yang
School of Computing: Conference and Workshop Papers
Lightpath scheduling is an important capability in next-generation wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks to reserve resources in advance for a specified time period while provisioning end-to-end lightpaths. In this study, we propose an approach to support dynamic lightpath scheduling in such networks. To minimize blocking probability in a network that accommodates dynamic scheduled lightpath demands (DSLDs), resource allocation should be optimized in a dynamic manner. However, for the network users who desire deterministic services, resources must be reserved in advance and guaranteed for future use. These two objectives may be mutually incompatible. Therefore, we propose a two-phase dynamic lightpath scheduling …
