Design, Modelling And Simulation Of An Innovative Trefoil Rotary Kiln Pilot Plant, Mick Mckeever Jan 2006

Design, Modelling And Simulation Of An Innovative Trefoil Rotary Kiln Pilot Plant, Mick Mckeever

Doctoral

This work investigates the contribution modelling makes when integrated into the pilot plant development stage of a new synthetic aggregate manufacturing process. The pilot plant is based around a novel rotary kiln, unique in design from standard kilns. The kiln has a trefoil cross sectional profile and a low thermal mass. A dynamic simulation model of the kiln was built to simulate the thermal behaviour of the pilot plant and the movement of the pelletised aggregate as it travels through the kiln drum.

As part of the preliminary work, a measurement and data acquisition subsystem was commissioned to allow data …

Composting Of Biodegradable Municipal Waste In Ireland, Niamh Power, Jerry D. Murphy Jan 2006

Composting Of Biodegradable Municipal Waste In Ireland, Niamh Power, Jerry D. Murphy

Publications

The implementation of the Landfill Directive (96/31/EC) will lead to a massive reduction in quantities of Biodegradable Municipal Waste (BMW), which may be landfilled. In 2016, an estimated 2.6 million tonnes of BMW will require diversion from landfill in Ireland. Recycling of dry paper, reuse of textiles and home composting will divert significant quantities of BMW. However, to divert the quantities required to comply with the Directive a significant proportion of the Organic Fraction of Municipal Solid Waste (OFMSW) will require treatment in centralised biological facilities. A survey was undertaken of composting facilities in Ireland to ascertain present capacity, present …

The Provincial Archive As A Place Of Memory: Confronting Oral And Written Sources On The Role Of Former Slaves In The Cuban War Of Independence (1895-98), Rebecca J. Scott Jan 2006

The Provincial Archive As A Place Of Memory: Confronting Oral And Written Sources On The Role Of Former Slaves In The Cuban War Of Independence (1895-98), Rebecca J. Scott

Book Chapters

Few questions of historical interpretation are more passionately debated than those that have become intertwined with a national narrative and with the definition of how a country came to be what it is imagined to be. For the island nation of Cuba, political independence was forged in a lengthy series of wars against Spanish colonial rule, ending in a direct encounter with U.S. expansionism. Those wars began in 1868 and concluded in 1898 with the departure of Spanish troops, followed by a military occupation of the island by U.S. forces. In 1902 the arst Cuban republic emerged, but it was …

K X N Trust-Based Agent Reputation, Christopher Alonzo Parker Jan 2006

K X N Trust-Based Agent Reputation, Christopher Alonzo Parker

Theses and Dissertations

In this research, a multi-agent system called KMAS is presented that models an environment of intelligent, autonomous, rational, and adaptive agents that reason about trust, and adapt trust based on experience. Agents reason and adapt using a modification of the k-Nearest Neighbor algorithm called (k X n) Nearest Neighbor where k neighbors recommend reputation values for trust during each of n interactions. Reputation allows a single agent to receive recommendations about the trustworthiness of others. One goal is to present a recommendation model of trust that outperforms MAS architectures relying solely on direct agent interaction. A second goal is to …

Evaluation Of Prototype Cell Delivery Catheters Using Agarose Gel And Cell Culture Experiments, Sagar Panse Jan 2006

Evaluation Of Prototype Cell Delivery Catheters Using Agarose Gel And Cell Culture Experiments, Sagar Panse

Theses and Dissertations

Neurodegenerative diseases and brain tumors affect millions of patients worldwide and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The blood brain barrier constitutes a major obstacle to delivery of therapeutic agents administered systemically for treating these disorders. Intracranial drug delivery provides a novel way of bypassing the blood brain barrier and achieving high concentration of therapeutic agents in the brain while avoiding systemic side effects. However damage to tissues during insertion of catheters, release of air in the brain and consequent backtracking of dye are some disadvantages with this mode of treatment. We evaluated prototype cell delivery catheters (each with …

A Computational Study Of Axial Compressor Rotor Casing Treatments And Stator Land Seals, Charles C. Cates Jan 2006

A Computational Study Of Axial Compressor Rotor Casing Treatments And Stator Land Seals, Charles C. Cates

Theses and Dissertations

As fuel prices soar ever higher, aircraft manufacturers and their airline customers demand that the next generation of engines used on their aircraft push the limits of efficiency and capability. This study consists of a computational examination of two currently accepted methods of axial compressor performance improvement in terms of surge margin and efficiency, rotor casing treatments and stator land seals.ADPAC and Fluent CFD solvers were used in the analysis of circumferential groove casing treatments and two types of stator seals, one typical of a front stage stator and one typical of a rear stage stator. The computational solutions and …

Hmg-Coa Reductase Inhibitors Act Synergistically With Ucn-01 Through Ras Inhibition, Payal Khanna Jan 2006

Hmg-Coa Reductase Inhibitors Act Synergistically With Ucn-01 Through Ras Inhibition, Payal Khanna

Theses and Dissertations

The primary objective of this study is to elucidate the mechanism by which the reagent UCN-01 induces apoptosis when administered to leukemia cells along with HmG-CoA reductase inhibitors, mainly the statins. In this study, we demonstrated that exposure of leukemia cell lines to lovastatin (20 uM, 18 hours) and UCN-01 (100 nM, 18 hours) resulted in mitochondria dysfunction, procaspase 3 and 9 cleavage, and PAW degradation along with marked cytochrome C release and apoptosis. Although similar molecular mechanisms have not yet been confirmed in other cancers, our hypothesis holds that enhanced apoptotic effects of UCN-01 are due in part to …

Conceptual Packaging, Thirada Raungpaka Jan 2006

Conceptual Packaging, Thirada Raungpaka

Theses and Dissertations

Packaging and package design is commonly thought of as a tool to attract the consumer to material goods. Packages, however, have other attributes. In Japan, packaging design is very charming because of the delicate selection of materials, images, and interaction. Different kinds of material provide different emotions and appeal to our sense of touch, which can be interpreted in many ways. Packaging lets us directly interact with an object and this experience becomes memorable and intimate. The combination of image and interaction creates another dimension of story telling. My creative project, Conceptual Packaging, is an experiment in using materials and …

Determination Of The Band Gap Bowing Parameter Of A1xga1-Xn With Contactless Electroreflectance, Laura C. Mcglinchey Jan 2006

Determination Of The Band Gap Bowing Parameter Of A1xga1-Xn With Contactless Electroreflectance, Laura C. Mcglinchey

Theses and Dissertations

Contactless electroreflectance (CER), a modulation spectroscopy (MS) technique, has been used to study the A and C exciton transitions in A1xGa1-xN layers for a composition range of 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.48 at room temperature. Taking the entire composition range (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) into account by incorporating a previously reported band gap energy for AlN, the dependence of the A-exciton transition on composition showed a downward bowing from linearity. A bowing parameter of b = 1.7 eV was found. Analysis of the lower composition range 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.48 resulted in a linear fit, as did the …

A Novel Minimized Dead-End Elimination Criterion And Its Application To Protein Redesign In A Hybrid Scoring And Search Algorithm For Computing Partition Functions Over Molecular Ensembles, Ivelin Georgiev, Ryan H. Lilien, Bruce R. Donald Jan 2006

Donald

Computer Science Technical Reports

Novel molecular function can be achieved by redesigning an enzyme's active site so that it will perform its chemical reaction on a novel substrate. One of the main challenges for protein redesign is the efficient evaluation of a combinatorial number of candidate structures. The modeling of protein flexibility, typically by using a rotamer library of commonly-observed low-energy side-chain conformations, further increases the complexity of the redesign problem. A dominant algorithm for protein redesign is Dead-End Elimination (DEE), which prunes the majority of candidate conformations by eliminating rigid rotamers that provably are not part of the Global Minimum Energy Conformation (GMEC). …

An Educational And Transitional Landscape, Joseph P. Nigg Jan 2006

Law As Rationalization: Getting Beyond Reason To Business Ethics, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw Jan 2006

Law As Rationalization: Getting Beyond Reason To Business Ethics, Jeffrey M. Lipshaw

Suffolk University Law School Faculty Works

Embedded in the way we use the law is the tendency of human reason to justification; in the words of one philosopher, a thirst for rationality [that] is a major source of lies. I contend that this tendency is exacerbated by the conflation of what is knowable as a matter of science, and that which we might believe is normative. I rely on Kant's critique of theoretical and practical reason to assess claims to objectivity in social science approaches to law, and to suggest it is not surprising that the operation of theoretical and practical reason would tend to the …

Buffalo, Mn: A Transect-Based Land Use Strategy, Luke A. Grandlund Jan 2006

Buffalo, Mn: A Transect-Based Land Use Strategy, Luke A. Grandlund

Landscape Architecture Theses

The objectives of this thesis are to explore the social, economic, and environmental dynamics of land use regulations and examine design strategies to increase the community identity and the preservation of natural resources within the city of Buffalo, Minnesota. Transect Mapping (Criterion 2005) is used to create alternative land use proposals for the city and adjacent areas. The use of SmartCode v8.0 (Placemakers 2006) principles assists in the implementation of new land use proposals. Cities were originally an invention to maximize the exchange of goods, services, cultures, friendships, ideas, and knowledge while minimizing travel. (Engwicht 1993) Until the decades following …
