Automatic Determination Of Mechanical Properties From Molecular Dynamic Stress-Strain Curves Using Regression Fringe Response, Josh Kemppainen, Tristan Muzzy, Travis Wavrunek, Gregory Odegard
Michigan Tech Publications
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have become a powerful tool for studying polymers, designing new materials, and composites. Mechanical behavior in MD simulations are typically evaluated through stress-strain curves. However, MD-generated stress-strain curves are often obscured by thermal noise from atomic vibrations. This noise complicates the reliable derivation of mechanical properties and hinders objective and reproducible analysis. The noise in the stress-strain curves has been removed by using a Butterworth low-pass filter, enabling clearer interpretation of stress-strain data. Building on this, a novel analysis framework the Regression Fringe Response (RFR) is introduced to systematically determine the Young's modulus, yield strength, and …

Numerical Study On Mechanical Characteristics Of Positive-Negative Batter Pile Combinations At Embankment Slope Toe Under Different Pile Length Ratios, Zhou Yi, Chen Wei, Xie Zhuqing, Xia Wang, Zhou Dequan
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
Embankment filling on weak subgrades is prone to sliding and collapse failures. Positive-negative batter pile combinations were proposed to be installed at the embankment slope toe to constrain lateral deformations, but systematic inquiries into the mechanical characteristics of positive-negative batter pile combinations are still lacking. The mechanical responses of positive-negative batter pile combinations under lateral loads with different pile length ratios (1/2, 2/3, 1, 3/2, and 2/1) were systematically investigated by the finite element software Abaqus, and calculation and verification were conducted by the structural mechanics force method, providing a basis for the design of positive-negative batter pile combinations at …

Experimental Study On Compressive And Flexural Behaviors Of Pva Fiber-Reinforced Cement Soil, Lu Peng, Lu Bin, Zhang Jiahu, Zhou Siwei, Wang Jin, Hou Lijun
Journal of China & Foreign Highway
To address the problems of low toughness and poor deformation ability of cement soil, short-chopped polyvinyl a lcohol (PVA) fibers were added to modify and toughen the cement soil in this paper, and unconfined compressive and flexural tests were conducted on the PVA fiber-reinforced cement soil with different cement contents. The results show that compared with plain cement soil, the fiber-reinforced cement soil has stronger compressive deformation capacity, a flatter descending branch of the compressive stress –strain curve, a higher residual stress level, and better compressive toughness. When the cement content increases from 5% to 10%, the overall growth rates …

With the goal of “achieving carbon peak by 2030 and carbon neutrality by 2060” proposed by China in 2020, energy conservation and carbon reduction in the transportation industry have become particularly important. As an established industrialized country, Britain started its research on carbon emission reduction in the transportation sector relatively early. This paper compared and analyzed the similarities and differences between the highway carbon emission accounting systems of China and Britain, so as to explore their respective policy backgrounds, accounting methods, and application effects and provide relevant suggestions for highway carbon emission reduction in China. Through literature analysis and case …
Genetic Algorithms With Psychological Tension Analysis For Music (Gaptam), Andrew Bowman
Genetic Algorithms With Psychological Tension Analysis For Music (Gaptam), Andrew Bowman
Theses
This work investigates a structurally grounded approach to algorithmic music composition using a stochastic Context Free Grammar (CFG) evolved through a genetic algorithm. While existing systems such as live-coding environments, DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations), and statistical models generate musical material, they typically lack explicit hierarchical organization, despite evidence that listeners perceive music sequentially and structurally. In this framework, derivation trees generated from an CFG serve as compositional candidates, which are evolved using subtree-based crossover and mutation. Fitness evaluation combines prior melodic heuristics with tension-based insights from music cognition research, introducing musically informed structure into the evolutionary process. A genetic system …
Photochemical Activation Of Cyanine-Based Nanogels For Controlled Drug Delivery, Presley Clary
Photochemical Activation Of Cyanine-Based Nanogels For Controlled Drug Delivery, Presley Clary
Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Student Publications
Cyanines are highly conjugated molecules with useful properties, such as ease of aggregation and fluorescence. In this project, they were incorporated into an acrylamide-based nanogel made through organic synthesis to exploit these properties for controlled drug delivery. Exposing the nanogel to nearinfrared (NIR) light causes it to react with reactive oxygen species (ROS), forming an unstable intermediate. The intermediate splits into two fragments, releasing the nanogel's cargo.1 The cargo, temozolomide, is an alkylating agent which can be used to disrupt the DNA of cancer cells.

Phenotype Variations Among Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii Under Quorum-Sensing Conditions, Marcel Pedrosa
Biomedical Engineering and Sciences Student Publications
Quorum sensing (QS) is a cell-to-cell communication system that allows unicellular microorganisms like the eukaryote C. reinhardtii to regulate phenotypic switching as a function of cell density due to the accumulation of signaling molecules. The goal of this study is to evaluate whether QS in C. reinhardtii is regulated by nutrient availability. We propose that in a nutrient-limited environment (low nitrogen TAP (N-TAP)), cells of C. reinhardtii (cc124) would adjust their motility-driven dispersion of cells and upregulate chlorophyll and carotenoid production per cell.

Strabismus affects approximately 2–5% of the general population [1]. Primary treatment is (strabismus) surgery but current methods result in approximately 36% of patients undergoing reoperation within 5 years [2]. One factor proposed to contribute towards reoperation is insufficient force applied to extraocular muscles during surgery. Excessive force triggers the oculocardiac reflex (OCR) which lowers heart rate by >20%[3]

Carmen Manrique De Quintero: A Forgotten Legacy In Colombian Piano Music, Lina Maria Luisa Marín Diaz
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This doctoral document investigates the life and piano works of Carmen Manrique de Quintero (1871–1931), a pivotal yet overlooked figure in Colombian music history. Positioned as a stylistic bridge between the nineteenth-century estética del salón [salon aesthetics] and the professionalization of the Colombian composer, Manrique de Quintero’s output represents a sophisticated synthesis of European forms and Colombian national rhythms. Despite her membership in the influential Garay artistic lineage and her prolific body of work, her legacy has suffered from editorial blurring, fragmented documentation, and systematic intellectual appropriation. Using a multidisciplinary approach of genealogical reconstruction and artistic archaeology, this study restores …
Humanoid Lidar–Rgb-D Calibration For Environment- Agnostic 3d Auto-Alignment, Howard Hua
Humanoid Lidar–Rgb-D Calibration For Environment- Agnostic 3d Auto-Alignment, Howard Hua
Electrical and Systems Engineering Undergraduate Student Research
This paper presents an environment-agnostic automatic LiDAR-RGB-D calibration method for a Unitree G1 humanoid platform. The proposed pipeline reconstructs depth-camera observations into 3D point clouds and aligns them directly with LiDAR point clouds, avoiding the need for calibration targets or manual adjustment. The method applies explicit preprocessing, coarse simulated annealing, polish simulated annealing, a symmetric nearest-neighbor alignment objective, and final point-to-plane local refinement. Experimental results show that the coarse simulated annealing stage provides most of the calibration correction, while the polish stage and local refinement further improve convergence and alignment accuracy. Overall, this framework demonstrates a practical target-free approach for …

Background: Large Language Models (LLMs) are predominantly trained and aligned in ways that reinforce Westerncentric epistemologies and socio-cultural norms, leading to cultural homogenization and limiting their ability to reflect global civilizational plurality. Existing benchmarking frameworks fail to adequately capture this bias, as they rely on rigid, closed-form assessments that overlook the complexity of cultural inclusivity. Objectives: To address this cultural bias problem, we introduce WorldView-Bench, a benchmark designed to evaluate Global Cultural Inclusivity (GCI) in LLMs by analyzing their ability to accommodate diverse worldviews. Methods: Our approach is grounded in the Multiplex Worldview proposed by Senturk et al., which distinguishes …

Repurposing An Old Pc Into A Self-Hosted Cloud And Media Server, Riley Biggins
Honors Theses
Commercial cloud platforms rely heavily on subscription models, so everyday users fall into a "cloud trap" summarized by perpetual fees, forfeited privacy, and a lack of true asset ownership. At the same time, functioning consumer electronics get discarded as e-waste when they fail to meet the hardware requirements of modern operating systems. This project presents a sustainable and cost-effective alternative to both issues by repurposing a 2017 HP Pavilion laptop into a personal cloud and media server.
Despite severe hardware constraints, my software architecture rivals the utility of paid services. By replacing Windows with a headless installation of Ubuntu Server, …
Price Dispersion In Online Markets Increases During Periods Of Higher Demand As Firms Use Dynamic Pricing Strategies To Maximize Revenue Under Demand Uncertainty., Brooke Stewart
Honors Theses
This study investigates the phenomenon of price dispersion in online retail markets during high-demand periods, focusing on the role of dynamic pricing under conditions of demand uncertainty. Although online markets operate in a transparent way, and consumers find it cheap to search them, the price dispersion phenomenon, when the same product is sold at varying prices by various vendors, persists. The study discusses the case of higher dispersion of prices in high-demand times like holidays, sales events, or shortages of goods when there is uncertainty about the future demand, causing dynamic pricing models. In analyzing the price of 25 the …

Is Dpph A Candidate Molecule For Quantum Computing Research At Room Temp Via Esr Spectroscopy?, Amber Mcnaughton
2026 Undergraduate Research Showcase
Quantum computing is a rapidly developing field in physics with the potential to solve complex problems that are beyond the capabilities of classical computers. This advantage comes from the use of qubits, which can exist in multiple states rather than the fixed binary states of classical bits. A major challenge in quantum computing research, however, is that most experiments require extremely low temperatures — often near −270°C — to maintain quantum behavior. Achieving these temperatures demands expensive, specialized equipment, making such research difficult to access for many scientists.
The organic molecule diphenyl-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) offers a promising solution to this limitation. …

Mountain glaciers are sensitive indicators of climate variability and influence freshwater availability in alpine regions. This study examined climatic controls on glacier snow cover variability across 20 glacier sites in western North America. Glacier locations were selected using the Randolph Glacier Inventory (RGI), a global database of glacier outlines derived from satellite observations. Snowline upper and lower bounds were compiled from remotely sensed observations and summarized by year to identify minimum and maximum snowline elevations.
Climate variables including air temperature, precipitation, snowfall, and positive degree days (a proxy for melt) were extracted from the ERA5-Land dataset, a global atmospheric reanalysis …

Scalable, continuous biomanufacturing processes have grown in importance to meet demand for smaller bioreactor sizes, lowered production costs, and improved quality attribute consistency. The Sf9/recombinant baculovirus (rBV) expression system demonstrates promise for virus-like particle (VLP) vaccine and gene therapy production. Here, we present a continuous rBV platform integrating an infection plug flow reactor (PFR) between stirred tank growth (gCSTR) and production (pCSTR) bioreactors. Cell expansion in the gCSTR included a ramp-up stage followed by continuous growth, reaching a steady state of 5×10 cells/mL and >90% viability. Péclet number-fit tracer studies confirmed near-ideal plug flow in the PFR, yielding a 10 …
