Effects Of Dietary Carbohyd Rate On Weight Gain And Gonad Production In Juvenile Sea Urchins, Lytechinus Variegatus, Anna M. Taylor
Effects Of Dietary Carbohyd Rate On Weight Gain And Gonad Production In Juvenile Sea Urchins, Lytechinus Variegatus, Anna M. Taylor
All ETDs from UAB
Formulated feeds that support weight gain and survival in juvenile sea urchins are necessary for successful sea urchin aquaculture. In Chapter 1, juvenile Lytechinus variegatus were fed ad libitum one of four experimental feeds: 1) mixed-taxa algal biofilm (MTAB), 2) freeze-dried MTAB, 3) a commercial, small mammal feed (Friskies® cat treats), or 4) a commercial, formulated feed for sea urchins. The MTAB and sea urchin feed supported weight gain and survival, suggesting that juveniles as small as 3 to 4 mm can utilize formulated feeds for growth. In Chapter 2, juvenile Lytechinus variegatus were fed ad libitum one of five …
Underlying Purinergic Signaling Important For Monociliumdependent Signaling In Ductal Epithelia: Implications For Polycystic Kidney Disease, Michael Hovater
Underlying Purinergic Signaling Important For Monociliumdependent Signaling In Ductal Epithelia: Implications For Polycystic Kidney Disease, Michael Hovater
All ETDs from UAB
This thesis concerns purinergic signaling in renal epithelial cells of normal and polycystic kidneys. The first section discusses first principles of “purinergic signaling” as they relate to the nephron and the urinary bladder. Remodeled and encapsulated cysts in autosomal dominant PKD (ADPKD) and remodeled “pseudocysts” in autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease (ARPKD) of the renal collecting duct create an ideal microenvironment for purinergic signaling. Once “trapped” in these microenvironments in a “closed system,” purinergic signaling becomes chronic and plays a significant epigenetic and detrimental role in the progression of ADPKD in particular, once the remodeling of the renal tissue has …
Speciation Of Alkali Metals In Biomass Combustion And Gasification, Pavankumar Bajrang Sonwane
Speciation Of Alkali Metals In Biomass Combustion And Gasification, Pavankumar Bajrang Sonwane
All ETDs from UAB
Electricity from biomass and biomass–derived fuels has become an attractive and viable alternative energy source. Alkali metals, mainly sodium and potassium, together with other ash forming inorganic components in biomass, increase fouling, slagging, and high temperature corrosion of heat transfer surfaces in boilers thus reduces efficiency during biomass combustion. Future biomass-to-electricity facilities will benefit from increased efficiencies, by incorporating integrated gasification combined cycle systems that use biomass syngas directly in gas turbine. These systems will have even lower tolerances for alkali vapor release, because accelerated erosion and corrosion of turbine blades results in shorter turbine life. One solution to the …
A Framework For Improving Tractability In Software Development, Sambit Patnaik
A Framework For Improving Tractability In Software Development, Sambit Patnaik
All ETDs from UAB
Present software development methodologies suffer from a common disadvantage that they do not allow seamlessly mapping the final implementations to the originating requirements. Most of the advances made in this area have been in the form of policy rather than processes and framework which support that kind of tractability. New software environments constituting component-based software promise to change the present picture. Web services and semantic web are upcoming technologies. Their popular use in the software industry is inevitable, dependent only upon how fast they mature into reliable technologies. Web services evolved from component software technology which is based upon the …

Isolation, Evaluation And Molecular Characterisation Of Bacillus Thuringiensis Isolates Against Prostephanus Truncatus, A Major Storage Pest In Maize, Jane Wamaitha Mwathi
All Master’s Theses
The study was initiated to investigate the potential of locally isolated Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) isolates for the control of the larger grain borer (LGB) (Prostephanus truncatus), a major storage pest of maize and cassava in Kenya. Samples of soil, grain and dead insects were collected from various maize growing areas in Kenya and screened for the presence of Bt. The isolates were tested for toxic activity against P. truncatus in the laboratory. Bacillus thuringiensis var. tenebrio (Btt), toxic to the Colorado Potato Beetle (CPB) was included in the bioassays as a Standard control reference. Bt precipitate obtained from broth was …

This Article is the second of twelve parts of a set of Model Federal Sentencing Guidelines designed to illustrate the feasibility and advantages of a simplified approach to federal sentencing proposed by the Constitution Project Sentencing Initiative. The Model Sentencing Guidelines and the Constitution Project report are all to be published in Volume 18, Number 5 of the Federal Sentencing Reporter. The project is described in an essay titled 'Tis a Gift To Be Simple: A Model Reform of the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, available on SSRN at http://ssrn.com/abstract=927929.
Comment, Saving Toby: Extortion, Blackmail, And The Right To Destroy, Stephen E. Sachs
Comment, Saving Toby: Extortion, Blackmail, And The Right To Destroy, Stephen E. Sachs
Faculty Scholarship
On the website SaveToby.com, one may find many endearing pictures of Toby, the cutest little bunny on the planet. Unfortunately, on June 30, 2005, the lovable Toby was scheduled to be butchered and eaten - unless the website's readers sent $50,000 to save his life. Though Toby's owner has since granted him a temporary reprieve - until Nov. 6, 2006 - the threat raises a fascinating issue of law. Extortion statutes prohibiting threats to destroy property generally do not prohibit threats to destroy one's own property. The law thus provides insufficient protection to a variety of resources on which others …
Larry Rivers And Frank O'Hara: Reframing Male Sexualities, Dong-Yeon Koh
Larry Rivers And Frank O'Hara: Reframing Male Sexualities, Dong-Yeon Koh
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
In 1970, Sam Hunter complained that the distinctive persona of proto-Pop artist Larry Rivers had overshadowed his artistic achievement. "Too often he has been taken as an engaging public performer", wrote Hunter, claiming that some critics "make the mistake of confusing his irrepressible exhibitionism with an imagined artistic flaw of fitful or unsteady inspiration". 1 This dissertation presents an alternative proposition regarding the relationship between Rivers' artistic persona and art: that an examination of Rivers' numerous activities inside and outside the artistic arena, such as poetry, jazz, and media, is indeed useful for understanding his work. Particularly, Rivers' involvement with …
Hf-Dsr: Dynamic Source Routing For High Frequency Radio Networks, Michael Stringer
Hf-Dsr: Dynamic Source Routing For High Frequency Radio Networks, Michael Stringer
Theses
HF-DSR is an ad hoc routing protocol designed to operate efficiently over high frequency (HF) radio networks. Ad hoc routing protocols allow networks to provide dynamic routing between endpoints. In contrast, static routing schemes require networks to be configured with potential routes in advance. As such, ad hoc routing mechanisms can compensate for unanticipated factors such as radio frequency (RF) interference or node mobility. HF-DSR is largely based on Dynamic Source Routing (DSR), a level 3 ad hoc networking protocol that emits network control information on demand. HF-DSR incorporates portions of DSR which minimize the quantity of control information transmitted. …

What Is The Effect Of Retrieval Practice On Competing Associates In Cued-Recall?, Umit Akirmak
What Is The Effect Of Retrieval Practice On Competing Associates In Cued-Recall?, Umit Akirmak
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
There have been many theories on why we forget. One of the recent approaches to this phenomenon is retrieval induced forgetting (RIF). The present study investigated RIF and different kinds of disruptions and their effects by using extra-list cued recall task. Some participants studied two additional word lists after the target list and some participants studied and were tested from these interpolated lists before their final recall of target list. Relatedness of the interfering lists was also manipulated. There were two control groups that either got an immediate test or got a math task before memory test. The particular interest …
