The Use Of Genomewide Enu Mutagenesis Screens To Unravel Complex Mammalian Traits: Identifying Genes That Regulate Organ-Specific And Systemic Autoimmunity, Gerard F. Hoyne, Christopher C. Goodnow

Health Sciences Papers and Journal Articles

T-cell development is perhaps one of the best understood processes of mammalian cell differentiation, as many of the genes and pathways have been identified. By contrast, relatively little is known about the genes and pathways involved in immunological tolerance to self-antigens. Here, we describe the challenges associated with a genomewide screen designed at identifying new immune regulatory genes that uses a model of organ-specific autoimmunity leading to type 1 diabetes. The successful propagation and identification of the new gene variants will shed light on the various developmental checkpoints in lymphocyte development that are crucial for establishing tolerance to self-antigens.

"Just Like A Tree Planted By The Waters, I Shall Not Be Moved": Charles Ogletree, Jr., And The Plain Virtues Of Lawyering For Racial Equality, Emma Coleman Jordan

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

It was a moment of unbelievable risk, a precipice of career suicide, a decision that would challenge the careful planning of more timid lawyers. His wife urged caution; a Harvard colleague explored back channels with the Senate Judiciary Committee to telegraph warning to him of unseen torpedoes that might lie in his path. Even he hesitated in the face of the immediate demands of the substantial scholarly writing required to earn tenure at Harvard. Yet, at the end of the day of October 10, 1991, Charles Ogletree, Jr., known as "Tree" to his friends, chose to step into a role …

The Transformation Of South African Private Law After Ten Years Of Democracy: The Role Of Torts (Delict) In The Consolidation Of Democracy, Christopher J. Roederer Jan 2006

The Transformation Of South African Private Law After Ten Years Of Democracy: The Role Of Torts (Delict) In The Consolidation Of Democracy, Christopher J. Roederer

School of Law Faculty Publications

Although the role of the private law has been largely ignored in studies of transitional justice, private law is a crucial component in South Africa’s transition/transformation. Contrary to the views of some commentators, the private law and delict in particular, were tainted by apartheid. Further, even if the private law of South Africa was not infected by the apartheid cancer, it acted as a carrier and facilitator of apartheid values and policies, perpetuating the inequities apartheid. While there is evidence of the cancer in apartheid case law the more serious problem was a failure of delict to progress under apartheid. …

The Potential Use Of (1→3, 1→4)-Β-D-Glucan From Barley As A Functional Food Ingredient For Cereal Foods, Louise Jane Cleary Jan 2006

The Potential Use Of (1→3, 1→4)-Β-D-Glucan From Barley As A Functional Food Ingredient For Cereal Foods, Louise Jane Cleary

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

The health related importance of dietary fibre as part of a balanced diet is well known. More recently, soluble fibres, such as (1→3, 1→4)-β-D-glucan (β-glucan), have been shown to influence glycaemic, insulin and cholesterol responses to foods. Barley is a rich source of β-glucan; however, consumption of products containing barley grain or flour is often limited by their negative organoleptic quality. A potential solution lies in the use of barley as an extraction source for β-glucan fractions. One problem with regards to this is the lack of clarity on the use of barley β-glucan fractions in food systems, particularly their …

School Effectiveness Research In China, Shujie Liu Jan 2006

School Effectiveness Research In China, Shujie Liu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The major purpose of this study was to identify the processes of effective schools in China, thereby enriching the international study of school effectiveness. A multistrand concurrent mixed model design was utilized to test the research hypotheses and answer the research questions. Both probability and purposive sampling strategies were employed in this study. The MANOVA analyses from the teacher, student, and parent questionnaires revealed a consistent result: there were significant differences between more effective and less effective schools across all the traditional school effectiveness variables. The MANOVA results for classroom teaching also demonstrated significant differences between more effective and less …

The Scent Of A New World Novel: Translating The Olfactory Language Of Faulkner And García Márquez, Terri Smith Ruckel Jan 2006

The Scent Of A New World Novel: Translating The Olfactory Language Of Faulkner And García Márquez, Terri Smith Ruckel

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Both William Faulkner and Gabriel García Márquez introduce the olfactory as a focal element in their writing, producing works that challenge the singular primacy of sight as the unrivaled means by which the New World might be understood. As they translate experiences of the New World into language, both writers record the power of olfactory perception to reflect memory and history, to shape identity, to mark unmistakably certain crisis moments of ethical action, and to delineate a form of knowledge crucial to their New World poetics of the novel. Observing and analyzing the olfactory language particular to the cultural spaces …

Integrating Micro-Scale Separations To Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption And Ioniation Time Of Flight Mass Spectrometry (Maldi-Tof-Ms) For Protein Analysis, Harrison K. Musyimi Jan 2006

Integrating Micro-Scale Separations To Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption And Ioniation Time Of Flight Mass Spectrometry (Maldi-Tof-Ms) For Protein Analysis, Harrison K. Musyimi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation describes the integration of micro-scale separations to matrix assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI TOF MS) for protein analysis. MALDI MS provides unsurpassed accurate mass measurements of intact bio-molecules, for example peptides and proteins, which in turn generate high molecular specificity enabling the identity, function and structure of these molecules to be characterized. However, in order to realize the full potential of MS in proteomic studies, integrated sample processing on automated and high throughput platforms is required to address the complexity, diversity and the dynamic range of proteomic analysis. The work described here contributes towards …

Extension Of Shor's Period-Finding Algorithm To Infinite Dimensional Hilbert Spaces, Jeremy James Becnel Jan 2006

Extension Of Shor's Period-Finding Algorithm To Infinite Dimensional Hilbert Spaces, Jeremy James Becnel

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Over the last decade quantum computing has become a very popular field in various disciplines, such as physics, engineering, and mathematics. Most of the attraction stemmed from the famous Shor period--finding algorithm, which leads to an efficient algorithm for factoring positive integers. Many adaptations and generalizations of this algorithm have been developed through the years, some of which have not been ripened with full mathematical rigor. In this dissertation we use concepts from white noise analysis to rigorously develop a Shor algorithm adapted to find a hidden subspace of a function with domain a real Hilbert space. After reviewing the …

Writing As A Cultural Negotiation: A Study Of Mariama Bâ, Marie Ndiaye And Ama Ata Aidoo, Catherine Afua Kapi Jan 2006

Writing As A Cultural Negotiation: A Study Of Mariama Bâ, Marie Ndiaye And Ama Ata Aidoo, Catherine Afua Kapi

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Critical review of the existing literature on African women writers clearly shows that nowhere is the question of writing as a cultural negotiation posed, discussed or much less addressed. This is a lacuna that this dissertation addresses for the first time by proposing a re-reading of the selected works of Ama Ata Aidoo, Mariama Bâ and Marie NDiaye through the new prism of writing as part of cultural negotiation. In doing so, the dissertation goes beyond the paradigm of binary oppositions that undergirds the critical literature on writing by Sub-Saharan women in favor of the innovative concept of negotiation. In …

Police Interrogation Of Juveniles: An Empirical Study Of Policy And Practice, Barry C. Feld Jan 2006

Police Interrogation Of Juveniles: An Empirical Study Of Policy And Practice, Barry C. Feld

Articles

The Supreme Court does not require any special procedural safeguards when police interrogate youths and use the adult standard--“knowing, intelligent, and voluntary under the totality of the circumstances”--to gauge the validity of juveniles' waivers of Miranda rights. Developmental psychologists have studied adolescents' capacity to exercise Miranda rights, questioned whether juveniles possess the cognitive ability and adjudicative competence necessary to exercise legal rights, and contended that immaturity and vulnerability make juveniles uniquely susceptible to police interrogation tactics. In the four decades since the Court decided Miranda, we have almost no empirical research about what actually occurs when police interview criminal suspects, …

Institutional Review Boards, Regulatory Incentives, And Some Modest Proposals For Reform, Dale Carpenter Jan 2006

Institutional Review Boards, Regulatory Incentives, And Some Modest Proposals For Reform, Dale Carpenter

Articles

It is time to rethink the role of Institutional Review Boards (IRBs) in approving social science research. While most law professors conduct their research in an almost unregulated environment - pouring through cases, statutes, and each other's articles, all without the kind of human interaction subject to IRB regulation - their colleagues elsewhere in the university have been coping for decades with an increasingly intrusive bureaucracy that sometimes undermines basic academic values. Three things seem very clear. First, there are a lot of IRBs - at least 4,000 - and their numbers are growing. Second, they have recently "increased their …

The Need For Mead: Rejecting Tax Exceptionalism In Judicial Deference, Kristin Hickman Jan 2006

The Need For Mead: Rejecting Tax Exceptionalism In Judicial Deference, Kristin Hickman

Articles

This Article takes the controversial position that Treasury regulations are entitled to judicial deference under the Chevron doctrine, as clarified by the Supreme Court in the more recent Mead case, whether those regulations are promulgated pursuant to specific authority delegated in a substantive provision of the Internal Revenue Code or in the exercise of general authority granted in Code Section 7805(a). The Article attributes the unwillingness to concede Chevron's applicability to tax exceptionalism, the erroneous perception of many scholars that tax is different from other areas of the law, which in the context of this Article translates into the idea …

Domestic Violence Matters: The Case For Appointed Counsel In Protective Order Proceedings, Beverly Balos Jan 2006

Domestic Violence Matters: The Case For Appointed Counsel In Protective Order Proceedings, Beverly Balos

Articles

A conventional reading of United States Supreme Court rulings on the right to counsel in civil cases would conclude that petitioners in protective order proceedings would have no right to appointed counsel. This article challenges this view and shows how Supreme Court jurisprudence, in fact, supports the conclusion that due process requires victims of domestic violence to have the benefit of appointed counsel.

Diverging Perspectives On Electronic Contracting In The U.S. And Eu, Jane K. Winn, Brian H. Bix Jan 2006

Diverging Perspectives On Electronic Contracting In The U.S. And Eu, Jane K. Winn, Brian H. Bix

Articles

Electronic Contracting - understood broadly to include both the Internet downloading of free or purchased software and the use of rolling contracts (shrink-wrap or terms in the box) in the sale of computers or the lease of software - has raised problems, based in part on the novelty of the transactional forms, and in part on the now-standard issue of unread terms in standardized contracts. This article, part of a conference relating to the legal regulation of new property and new technologies, offers an overview of the distinctly different approaches to Electronic Contracting of the U.S. and the European Union. …

The Absolute Prohibition Of Torture And Ill-Treatment, David Weissbrodt Jan 2006

The Absolute Prohibition Of Torture And Ill-Treatment, David Weissbrodt

Articles

The President, the Secretary of State, and other U.S. government officials have repeatedly assured the world that the United States does not engage in "torture." Whenever they try to issue such statements, the critical listener must ask such questions as "What do they mean by torture?" Have they so narrowly defined "torture" as to ask the listener to overlook the mounting evidence of extremely brutal treatment which U.S. personnel have perpetrated against detainees in Afghanistan, Guantanamo, Iraq, and other secret detention facilities? Many detainees held by the U.S. have been subjected to illtreatment that would, under international definitions and jurisprudence, …

Peoples' Tribunals: Legitimate Or Rough Justice, Christine M. Chinkin Jan 2006

Peoples' Tribunals: Legitimate Or Rough Justice, Christine M. Chinkin

Articles

The article examines the use of Peoples' Tribunals in seeking access to justice where none has been possible through more formal methods. It uses as illustration the Women's International War Crimes Tribunal that sought justice for the so-called comfort women, the primarily Asian women who were subjected to sexual slavery by the Japanese military before and during World War Two. The article briefly recounts the fate of the comfort women and then considers the legal and practical obstacles they faced in accessing justice at the end of the War. It outlines how towards the end of the 20th century the …

Comparison Of Classical And Second Quantized Description Of The Dynamic Stark Shift, Martin K. Haas, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Christoph H. Keitel Jan 2006

Comparison Of Classical And Second Quantized Description Of The Dynamic Stark Shift, Martin K. Haas, Ulrich D. Jentschura, Christoph H. Keitel

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We compare the derivation of the dynamic Stark shift of hydrogenic energy levels in a classical framework with an adiabatically damped laser-atom interaction, which is equivalent to the Gell-Mann-Low-Sucher formula, and a treatment based on time-independent perturbation theory, with a second-quantized laser-atom dipole interaction Hamiltonian. Our analysis applies to a laser that excites a two-photon transition in atomic hydrogen or in a hydrogenlike ion with low nuclear charge number. Our comparisons serve to demonstrate why the dynamic Stark shift may be interpreted as a stimulated radiative correction and illustrates connections between the two derivations. The simplest of the derivations is …

External Debt And Growth Dynamics, Si Chen Jan 2006

External Debt And Growth Dynamics, Si Chen

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Based on an extended growth model, this thesis further explores the joint dynamics between external debt and growth. The model explicitly expresses this growth dynamic mechanism incorporating external debt as an important explanatory variable with risk premium and other related structural factors. The interactions between external debt and growth are interpreted as directly and mainly through the channel of capital accumulation and indirectly through technology change. These constitute the functional form foundation to solve the main concern on the effect of external debt upon growth adjustment path. The numerical simulations of the model indicate that when external debt is assumed …

Information Value Of Credit Ratings In Asia Ex-Japan Markets, Chen Zhou Jan 2006

Information Value Of Credit Ratings In Asia Ex-Japan Markets, Chen Zhou

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This study investigates the information value of credit ratings by exploring the relationship between ratings and security price. Unlike previous studies, we concentrate on the major markets ex-Japan in Asia. We begin with an investigation of rating reclassification as well as credit watch placement events by three leading international rating agencies. We show that markets with differing level of sophistication behave differently. Specifically, South Korea and Hong Kong are found to respond in a similar manner. Indonesia shows possible ign of information leakage. In the cases of Malaysia and Thailand, significant and positive equity price responses exist for upgrades, suggesting …

Improving Melting Efficiency Through The Application Of New Refractory Materials, Kent D. Peaslee, Semen Naumovich Lekakh, Von Richards, Todd P. Sander, Jeffrey D. Smith, Mangesh Vibhandik

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Ladle design and ladle practices have a significant effect on a foundry operation and product quality. Large steel temperature losses or instabilities in the pouring temperature are frequently compensated by tapping at higher temperatures dramatically increasing furnace and ladle lining wear, oxidation of the steel, alloying element losses, and energy consumption in steel melting. Ladle lining materials need to satisfy a complex array of often conflicting requirements. For example, ceramic materials for linings must possess a high strength at liquid steel temperatures to prevent erosion and crack formation. However, linings need to also have a low thermal conductivity which typically …

Kinematically Complete Experiment On Single Ionization In 75-Kev P+He Collisions, Michael Schulz, Ahmad Hasan, N. V. Maydanyuk, M. Foster, B. Tooke, Don H. Madison Jan 2006

Kinematically Complete Experiment On Single Ionization In 75-Kev P+He Collisions, Michael Schulz, Ahmad Hasan, N. V. Maydanyuk, M. Foster, B. Tooke, Don H. Madison

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have measured and calculated fully differential single-ionization cross sections for the complete three-dimensional space in 75 keV p+He collisions. Several signatures of the projectile-residual-target-ion interaction, some of which are not observable for fast projectiles and for electron impact, are revealed. Some of these features are qualitatively reproduced by our calculations if this interaction is accounted for. However, overall the agreement between theory and experiment is not very good. Thus, our understanding of effects caused by the projectile-residual-target-ion interaction appears to be rather incomplete.

Computer Forensics Field Triage Process Model, Marcus K. Rogers, James Goldman, Rick Mislan, Timothy Wedge, Steve Debrota

Journal of Digital Forensics, Security and Law

With the proliferation of digital based evidence, the need for the timely identification, analysis and interpretation of digital evidence is becoming more crucial. In many investigations critical information is required while at the scene or within a short period of time - measured in hours as opposed to days. The traditional cyber forensics approach of seizing a system(s)/media, transporting it to the lab, making a forensic image(s), and then searching the entire system for potential evidence, is no longer appropriate in some circumstances. In cases such as child abductions, pedophiles, missing or exploited persons, time is of the essence. In …
