Empowering "Foreign Brides" And Community Through Praxis-Oriented Research, Hsia Jan 2006

Empowering "Foreign Brides" And Community Through Praxis-Oriented Research, Hsia

Societies Without Borders

Through the author's direct participation in the empowerment of the "foreign brides" and in a rural community, which are both stigmatized in the mainstream Taiwan society, this paper discusses the theories and methods of praxis-oriented research, and its implication to social studies. This paper illustrates how the concepts and techniques of the "theater of the oppressed" can be combined with "pedagogy of the oppressed" to break through the "culture of silence" of the oppressed, develop their critical awareness, and help the women organize themselves for social transformation. It is proposed that praxis-oriented research can achieve more sophisticated research results, because …

Mag-Igal And Igal-Jin: Dancing The Spirits Of The Ancestors Ill The Rituals Of Magduwata Of The Bajau Kubang In Bumbum Island, Semporna, East Malaysia, Mohd Anis Md Nor, Hanafi Hussin

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Mag-igal (dancing) and Igal-Jin (dancing spirit bearer) are the liminal performative components of Magduwata, a healing ritual ceremony of the Bajau Kubang people in Semporna, East Malaysia. This paper will focus on the liminality of Magduwata ceremony of the Bajau Kubang from Bumbum Islands in Semporna through trance dancing (Mag-igal and Igal-Jin) at the conclusion ofthe ancestral-derived healing ceremony. The Magduwata ritual healing represents a classic example of Turner's 'social drama' where unexplained sickness among family members is regarded as a breach in the physical and metaphysical relationship of the living and the ancestral spirits. Hence, crisis that emerges from …

The Brain-Disordered Defendant: Neuroscience And Legal Insanity In The Twenty-First Century, Richard E. Redding

American University Law Review

Brain-damaged defendants are seen everyday in American courtrooms, and in many cases, their criminal behavior appears to be the product of extremely poor judgment and self-control. Some have a disorder in the frontal lobes, the area of the brain responsible for judgment and impulse control. Yet because defendants suffering from frontal lobe dysfunction usually understand the difference between right and wrong, they are unable to avail themselves of the only insanity defense available in many states, a defense based on the narrow McNaghten test. "Irresistible impulse" (or "control") tests, on the other hand, provide an insanity defense to those who …

Simultaneous Measurement Of Water Volume And Ph In Single Cells Using Bcecf And Fluorescence Imaging Microscopy, Francisco J. Alvarez-Leefmans, José J. Herrera-Pérez, Martín S. Márquez, Victor M. Blanco Jan 2006

Simultaneous Measurement Of Water Volume And Ph In Single Cells Using Bcecf And Fluorescence Imaging Microscopy, Francisco J. Alvarez-Leefmans, José J. Herrera-Pérez, Martín S. Márquez, Victor M. Blanco

Pharmacology and Toxicology Faculty Publications

Regulation and maintenance of cell water volume and intracellular pH (pHi) are vital functions that are interdependent; cell volume regulation affects, and is in turn affected by, changes in pHi. Disruption of either function underlies various pathologies. To study the interaction and kinetics of these two mechanisms, we developed and validated a quantitative fluorescence imaging microscopy method to measure simultaneous changes in pHi and volume in single cells loaded with the fluorescent probe BCECF. CWV is measured at the excitation isosbestic wavelength, whereas pHiis determined ratiometrically. The method has a time resolution of …

Geologic Framework And Glaciation Of The Western Area, Christopher L. Hill

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

The geological framework for western North America consists of physical landscapes (geomorphic features) and stratigraphic sequences that can be used to provide a basis for understanding the chronologic and environmental context for Late Pleistocene human populations. The Western Area includes the region of North America from the Pacific coast to the Rocky Mountains and parts of the Great Basin and Colorado plateau (figs. 1-2).

Pollen Concentration Analysis Of Ancestral Pueblo Dietary Variation, Karl J. Reinhard, Sherrian Edwards, Teyona R. Damon, Debra K. Meier Jan 2006

Pollen Concentration Analysis Of Ancestral Pueblo Dietary Variation, Karl J. Reinhard, Sherrian Edwards, Teyona R. Damon, Debra K. Meier

Department of Anthropology: Faculty Publications

Previous coprolite research on the Colorado Plateau has shown that macrofossils are a useful way of statistically demonstrating prehistoric dietary variation of Ancestral Pueblos (Anasazi). Up until now, pollen concentration from human coprolites has not been used for comparative, statistical study. We present here the statistical analysis of pollen concentration values of coprolites from two Ancestral Pueblo sites, Salmon Ruin and Antelope House. The data show that although most pollen types do not show statistically significant variation, there are some types that show how different Ancestral Pueblo populations adapted to plant resources in different environments. The analysis indicates that future …

Effects Of Growth-Promoting Agents And Season On Blood Metabolites And Body Temperature In Heifers, Terry L. Mader, W. M. Kreikemeier Jan 2006

Effects Of Growth-Promoting Agents And Season On Blood Metabolites And Body Temperature In Heifers, Terry L. Mader, W. M. Kreikemeier

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

To assess the efficacy of growth-promoting agents among seasons, triiodothyronine (T3), thyroxine (T4), plasma urea nitrogen (PUN), IGF-I, and tympanic temperature (TT) were measured in summer and winter studies. Heifers (n = 9/pen) were allotted to 12 pens in both December and June. Pens were assigned to 1 of 6 growth promotant treatments: control (no growth promotant), estrogenic implant (E), trenbolone acetate implant (TBA), E + TBA (ET), melengestrol acetate (MGA), and ET + MGA (ETM). Blood samples were collected from 4 heifers per pen per study on d 0, 28, 56, and 84 via jugular …

Characterization Of 35 Microsatellite Loci In The Pacific Lion-Paw Scallop (Nodipecten Subnodosus) And Their Cross-Species Amplification In Four Other Scallops Of The Pectinidae Family, Ana M. Ibarra, Jessica Lynn Petersen, Thomas R. Famula, Bernie May Jan 2006

Famula, Bernie May

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Four microsatellite-enriched DNA libraries yielded 35 microsatellite loci from 100 primer pairs designed for Pacific lion-paw scallop, Nodipecten subnodosus. The number of alleles ranged from four to 28. Three of the 35 loci were not in Hardy–Weinberg equilibrium and linkage disequilibrium was found for one pair of loci. These microsatellites will be used to analyze the population structure of the species in Mexico’s Baja Peninsula to propose management strategies for scallop aquaculture development. Twenty-six primer pairs cross-amplified in Nodipecten nodosus, whereas none (Argopecten ventricosus) or few cross-amplified in the Argopecten species.

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The influence of different levels of adjusted fat thickness (AFT) and HCW slaughter end points (covariates) on estimates of breed and retained heterosis effects was studied for 14 carcass traits from serially slaughtered purebred and composite steers from the US Meat Animal Research Center (MARC). Contrasts among breed solutions were estimated at 0.7, 1.1, and 1.5 cm of AFT, and at 295.1, 340.5, and 385.9 kg of HCW. For constant slaughter age, contrasts were adjusted to the overall mean (432.5 d). Breed effects for Red Poll, Hereford, Limousin, Braunvieh, Pinzgauer, Gelbvieh, Simmental, Charolais, MARC I, MARC II, and MARC III …

Gambling By College Students: Personality Characteristics And Acceptability Of Internet-Based Treatment, Andrew E. Cameron Jan 2006

Gambling By College Students: Personality Characteristics And Acceptability Of Internet-Based Treatment, Andrew E. Cameron

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Personality disorders are associated with Pathological Gambling (PG) among adults. Little is known, however, about these symptoms in college-student gamblers. In addition, little is known about the current prevalence or treatment preferences of college gamblers. An online survey of gambling practices and personality characteristics was conducted, as well as a series of focus groups evaluating a web-based gambling treatment program. A higher prevalence of PG was observed among college students than previously reported. College students with PG displayed similar personality disorder symptoms to those observed among adults with PG. Students preferred free or reduced cost treatment. Focus group participants provided …

Lack Of Effect Of Metyrapone And Exogenous Cortisol On Early Porcine Conceptus Development, H. G. Klemcke, J. L. Vallet, R. K. Christenson Jan 2006

Lack Of Effect Of Metyrapone And Exogenous Cortisol On Early Porcine Conceptus Development, H. G. Klemcke, J. L. Vallet, R. K. Christenson

Roman L. Hruska U.S. Meat Animal Research Center: Reports

In many species, including swine, fetal plasma glucocorticoids such as cortisol increase as term approaches and are responsible for final maturational changes in numerous tissues (e.g. Silver, 1990; Sangild et al. 1993, 1994; Fowden et al. 1995). On the contrary, excessive exposure to glucocorticoids during gestationmay cause intra-uterine growth retardation, developmental abnormalities or death, or lead to increased incidence of certain diseases during adult life (Blackburn et al. 1965; Reinisch et al. 1978; Seckl et al. 2000). Hence, one might speculate that a closely regulated glucocorticoid exposure is necessary throughout gestation to ensure appropriate development and survival (Klemcke et al. …
