Early Attempts To Raise And Stock Game Birds In Texas, Stanley D. Casto Jan 2006

Early Attempts To Raise And Stock Game Birds In Texas, Stanley D. Casto

Bulletin of the Texas Ornithological Society

Game birds were often kept as household pets or in private aviaries in early Texas. Sportsmen sometimes attempted to stock native game birds outside their normal range and, in the case of the Ring-necked Pheasant (Phasianus colchicus), to introduce an exotic species. The Scaled Quail (Callipepla squamata) taken in Cooke and Fannin counties during 1886 were, most likely, introduced birds or escapees rather than birds native to the area. Accounts of these early attempts at aviculture and stocking are found for the most part in the newspapers, hunting magazines, and archival records of the time.

Axon Guidance Autonomy And Tensional Requirement For Synaptic Function: Is Learning A Forced Response?, Scott Siechen Jan 2006

Axon Guidance Autonomy And Tensional Requirement For Synaptic Function: Is Learning A Forced Response?, Scott Siechen

Natural Science Faculty

Individual neurons extend multiple processes whose growth cones exhibit different responses to their environment. In culture, detached growth cones display guidance autonomy, contain mRNA for cytoskeletal and other axonal components, and are capable of synthesizing protein locally. However, the extent to which growth cone's autonomy contributes to its pathfinding function within the complex in vivo environment is unknown. Here, we show that detached axonal growth cones from identified Drosophila motoneurons maintain balanced filopodial activities as they extend, navigate and target postsynaptic partner cells normally. After detachment, the growth cones continue to synthesize the synaptic vesicle protein Synaptotagmin but, upon contacting …

Soybean Row Spacing And Weed Emergence Time Influence Weed Competitiveness And Competitive Indices, Shawn M. Hock, Stevan Z. Knezevic, Alex Martin, John L. Lindquist Jan 2006

Soybean Row Spacing And Weed Emergence Time Influence Weed Competitiveness And Competitive Indices, Shawn M. Hock, Stevan Z. Knezevic, Alex Martin, John L. Lindquist

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Weed competitiveness can be quantified with the concept of competitive index (CI), a relative scale of weed competitiveness. Field studies were conducted in 2002 and 2003 in northeastern and southeastern Nebraska to evaluate the influence of soybean row spacing and relative weed emergence time on the competitiveness of major weed species in soybean. Ten weed species were seeded in soybean spaced 19 and 76 cm apart at the planting, emergence, and first trifoliate leaf stages of soybean. Total weed dry matter (TDM), weed plant volume, and percent soybean yield loss were arbitrarily selected as a base for determining the CI …

Snp-Phage – High Throughput Snp Discovery Pipeline, Lakshmi K. Matukumalli, John J. Grefenstette, David L. Hyten, Ik-Young Choi, Perry B. Cregan, Curt P. Van Tassell

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Background: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as defined here are single base sequence changes or short insertion/deletions between or within individuals of a given species. As a result of their abundance and the availability of high throughput analysis technologies SNP markers have begun to replace other traditional markers such as restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs), amplified fragment length polymorphisms (AFLPs) and simple sequence repeats (SSRs or microsatellite) markers for fine mapping and association studies in several species. For SNP discovery from chromatogram data, several bioinformatics programs have to be combined to generate an analysis pipeline. Results have to be stored in …

Factors Associated With Hiv Prevalence In A Pre-Partum Cohort Of Zambian Women, Janet S. St. Lawrence, W. Klaskala, C. Kankasa, J. T. West, Charles D. Mitchell, Charles Wood

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

An ongoing study of mother-to-child human transmission in Zambian women (n = 3,160) allowed us to examine the association of medical injections with HIV serostatus while simultaneously accounting for other factors known to be correlated with HIV prevalence. Multi-method data collection included structured interviews, medical record abstraction, clinical examinations, and biological measures. Medically administered intramuscular or intravenous injections in the past five years (but not blood transfusions) were overwhelmmgly correlated with HIV prevalence, exceeding the contribution of sexual behaviors in a multivariable logistic regression. Statistically significant associations with HIV also were found for some demographic variables, sexual behaviors, alcohol …

Nebraska Center for Virology: Faculty Publications

HIV-1 subtype C is the most common HIV-1 group M subtype in Africa and many parts of Asia. However, to date HIV-1 vaccine candidate immunogens have not induced potent and broadly neutralizing antibodies against subtype C primary isolates. We have used a centralized gene strategy to address HIV-1 diversity, and generated a group M consensus envelope gene with shortened consensus variable loops (CON-S) for comparative studies with wildtype (WT) Env immunogens. Our results indicate that the consensus HIV-1 group M CON-S Env elicited cross-subtype neutralizing antibodies of similar or greater breadth and titer than the WT Envs tested, indicating the …

From Scientists To Merchants: The Transformation Of The Pharmaceutical Industry And Its Impact On Health, Ugalde, Núria Homedes Jan 2006

From Scientists To Merchants: The Transformation Of The Pharmaceutical Industry And Its Impact On Health, Ugalde, Núria Homedes

Societies Without Borders

The number of innovative drugs reaching the market has decreased steadily during the last several years to a handful per year. At the same time, the amount of resources allocated by the pharmaceutical industries to promotion and marketing has increased at a faster pace than those allocated to research and development of new products. The paper presents the hypothesis that for the large corporations, the production of me-too drugs is more profitable than to invest in research and development of innovative products. Gaining a market share of me-too drugs requires large investments in promotion and marketing, one result of which …

Global Sociology And The Nature Of Rights, Turner Jan 2006

Global Sociology And The Nature Of Rights, Turner

Societies Without Borders

Citizenship is fundamentally a western political and legal concept; it is also a concept relevant specifically to a national polity. By contrast human rights have been, since their formal proclamation in 1948, promoted as universal rights. The relationship between the social rights of national citizenship and the human rights of the Declaration provides a useful case study in which to discover whether sociology can provide concepts and theories that function across conceptual boundaries and territorial borders. Furthermore, human rights discourse may prove to be the primary candidate for sociology to operate as an effective discourse of global social reality. However, …
