Synthesis, Processing And Characterization Of Nanocrystalline Titanium Dioxide, Shipeng Qiu Jan 2006

Synthesis, Processing And Characterization Of Nanocrystalline Titanium Dioxide, Shipeng Qiu

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Titanium dioxide (TiO2), one of the basic ceramic materials, has found a variety of applications in industry and in our daily life. It has been shown that particle size reduction in this system, especially to nano regime, has the great potential to offer remarkable improvement in physical, mechanical, optical, biological and electrical properties. This thesis reports on the synthesis and characterization of the nanocrystalline TiO2 ceramic in details. The study selected a simple sol-gel synthesis process, which can be easily controlled and reproduced. Titanium tetraisopropoxide, isopropanol and deionized water were used as starting materials. By careful control of relative proportion …

The Impact Of The 9/11 Attacks On National Security Law Casebooks, Tung Yin Jan 2006

The Impact Of The 9/11 Attacks On National Security Law Casebooks, Tung Yin

St. Thomas Law Review

In this book review, I use the 9/11 attacks and the subsequent American responses as a framework for reviewing four casebooks currently available for use in courses on national security or antiterrorism. It is hardly surprising that law professors might themselves respond to the 9/11 attacks by adjusting content in appropriate courses. While casebooks may have other uses, their primary purpose is undoubtedly intended to be in law school courses. In turn, law school courses have a number of goals, among them the imparting of substantive knowledge in the particular field of law, as well as the development of students' …

Can Consumer-Driven Health Care, Health Reimbursement Arrangements And Health Savings Accounts Save Employer Sponsored Health Care From Ruin, Larry Grudzien Jan 2006

Can Consumer-Driven Health Care, Health Reimbursement Arrangements And Health Savings Accounts Save Employer Sponsored Health Care From Ruin, Larry Grudzien

St. Thomas Law Review

Employer sponsored health care programs have been in crisis for over ten years because, year after year, health care costs and premiums continue to increase faster than inflation. Employers have tried a number of solutions, but nothing seems to stop the trend. Between 2000 to 2006, premiums for family health coverage increased by 87% compared with general inflation growth of 18% and wage growth of 20%.2 Employee spending for health insurance coverage increased 126% between 2000 and 2004. Since 2001, the employees share of health insurance costs have soared 63% for single coverage and 58% for family coverage.3 For 2006 …

Neuronal pentraxins (NPs) define a family of proteins that are homologous to C-reactive and acute-phase proteins in the immune system and have been hypothesized to be involved in activity-dependent synaptic plasticity. To investigate the role of NPs in vivo , we generated mice that lack one, two, or all three NPs. NP1/2 knock-out mice exhibited defects in the segregation of eye-specific retinal ganglion cell (RGC) projections to the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus, a process that involves activity-dependent synapse formation and elimination. Retinas from mice lacking NP1 and NP2 had cholinergically driven waves of activity that occurred at a frequency similar …

Application Of Swarm Clustering Theory To Optical Self-Organization, Ran Huang Jan 2006

Application Of Swarm Clustering Theory To Optical Self-Organization, Ran Huang

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Swarm clustering is a biologically inspired technology, which mimics the behavior of an insect colony to solve unsupervised clustering problems. The unique mechanism of swarm clustering is self-organization which can form global patterns without centralized control. In this thesis, swarm-clustering models proposed by Deneubourg and by Lumer and Faieta are studied, implemented and improved by visualizing clustering results using true color representation. In nonlinear optical systems, self-organized patterns are often observed, such as hexagon formation in experiments with KNbO^Fe due to the photorefractive effect. Considering the particle feature of light, we propose to design a self-organizing system in which only …

Adult Attachment Networks: Relations To Coping And Psychological Difficulties, Karin Elizabeth Haus Jan 2006

Adult Attachment Networks: Relations To Coping And Psychological Difficulties, Karin Elizabeth Haus

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to better understand how adult attachment networks impact coping and current psychological functioning. The college student participants (n = 183) completed self-report questionnaires including modified versions of the Relationship Questionnaire (RQ) and the Relationship Structures (RS) to assess attachments in the mother, father, romantic partner, and best friend relationships; the Attachment Strength (AS) questionnaire designed for this study to measure the use of attachment functions; the Coping Inventory for Stressful Situations (CISS); and the Symptom Checklist-90-Revised (SCL-90-R®). Results indicated that attachment networks can be comprised of various attachment styles with more avoidance behaviors in …

Nanoparticles For Enhanced Delivery Of Chemotherapeutics, Emily J. Bahram-Ahi Jan 2006

Nanoparticles For Enhanced Delivery Of Chemotherapeutics, Emily J. Bahram-Ahi

Opportunities for Undergraduate Research Experience Program (OURE)

Delivery of the anticancer drug paclitaxel (commercially known as Taxol®) is difficult due to its limited solubility in aqueous media. This study proposes a novel bubble bursting technique to generate nanoparticles of the chemotherapeutic in an effort to decrease potential side effects and improve the bioavailability of hydrophobic drugs. The bubble bursting apparatus will be used to produce nanoparticles of a biodegradable polymer, poly(lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA), as carriers for paclitaxel. The dissolved paclitaxel in this biodegradable polymer matrix will be released at a controlled rate for a more efficient delivery of the drug throughout the body.

Efficacy Of Sunflower Decoy Plots For Blackbird Control And Supplemental Stopover Habitat, Heath M. Hagy, Jon Raetzman, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier Jan 2006

Efficacy Of Sunflower Decoy Plots For Blackbird Control And Supplemental Stopover Habitat, Heath M. Hagy, Jon Raetzman, George M. Linz, William J. Bleier

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Wildlife Conservation Sunflower Plots (WCSP) were planted and monitored during a two-year trial/research program to monitor the effect of decoy plots on blackbird use of nearby commercial sunflower and abundance of nonblackbird migratory species within the plots. In the two year evaluation period, in excess of 975 hours were spent by three researchers in the plots monitoring damage, vegetation, and avian use. We used bird numbers, vegetation characteristics, and landuse landscape variables to assess the optimal habitat conditions in and around each decoy plot for luring blackbirds and providing adequate stopover habitat for nonblackbird migrants. In 2004, wetland and shelterbelt …

Making A Splash: A Population Study Of Orcas And Its Application For Student Inquiry In Iowa, Laura Howell

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The author participated in an Earthwatch Institute sponsored population survey of the Southern Resident Orca (killer whales). The two main aspects of this survey were to study the Orca population and to monitor the effects of humans on them. Orcas are listed as a "threatened" species and their population is currently declining. Results of the study linked the presence of the pollutant Polychlorinated-biphenyls (PCBs) in the ocean to this decline. Students will use the procedures outlined by this research to conduct their own population study on their local community. They will go to the cemetery to collect the mortality (death …
