[3120+1kbdel86kb]+[Pn1303k] Genotype In An Emirati Cystic Fibrosis Patient: Indication Of A Founder Mutation In Palestinian Arabs, Danish Saleheen, Philippe M. Frossard, Emmanuelle Girodon

Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is the most common life-limiting autosomal recessive disorder in Caucasian population. The disease was initially considered to be rare in Middle Eastern countries. 95% of CF in Emirati families is due to two mutations only--p.S549R(T > G) and p.F508del. We report here the case of a patient referred to CF and Respiratory Clinic at Tawam Hospital for cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator (CFTR) gene screening to ascertain the diagnosis of CF, who was found to carry a unique genotype, signifying the importance of retrieving ancestral histories of patients with monogenic disorders.

During the last few years, HIV prevalence in Pakistan has taken the form of a concentrated epidemic in at least two high risk groups, namely, Intravenous Drug Users (IDUs) and Male Sex Workers (MSWs). Factors that have facilitated the proliferation of HIV infection include transmission through …

A Quantitative Approach Towards Establishing Normal Csp Mrna Accumulation Patterns In Escherichia Coli K12, Khadijah Aisha Mitchell Jan 2006

A Quantitative Approach Towards Establishing Normal Csp Mrna Accumulation Patterns In Escherichia Coli K12, Khadijah Aisha Mitchell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The cold-shock response in Escherichia coli induces a set of 26 proteins that help ensure the efficiency of transcription, translation, and DNA replication at low temperatures. Some members of this group belong to the cold-shock protein (Csp) family. In Escherichia coli K12, there are 9 homologous csp genes named cspA-cspI. The Csp family in this strain is unusual because each gene has different mechanisms of induction and gene products. Various regulation studies have been performed on individual members of this family to help understand why so many homologues exist. No literature to date has ever looked at the mRNA expression …

Parental Compliance To Clinical Recommendations In An Adhd Clinic, Alice Samantha Thibodeau

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Psychological assessments are a cornerstone of clinical practice inPsychology, but if results and recommendations are not used to guide treatment interventions, their value is greatly diminished. Currently, there is very little research that examines adherence to treatment recommendations given to parents or caregivers following psychological evaluations of their children. The present study expands on previous research (MacNaughton & Rodrigue, 2001) examining perceived barriers to parental compliance with psychological assessment recommendations by considering the impact of severity of child behavior problems and parenting stress on compliance. Eighty caregiver/child dyads were recruited through an ADHD evaluation clinic and caregivers completed a telephone …

Papas' Baby: Impossible Paternity In Going To Meet The Man, Matt Brim Jan 2006

Papas' Baby: Impossible Paternity In Going To Meet The Man, Matt Brim

Publications and Research

"Papas' Baby: Impossible Paternity in Going to Meet the Man" employs the conceit of “impossible” fatherhood to critique mutually reinforcing racist and heteronormative constructions of reproduction. It argues, first, that the white paternal fantasy of creating “pure” white sons is undermined by the homoerotic necessity of bring the phantasmatic black eunuch, castrated yet powerfully potent, into the procreative white bed. The “fact” of the “white” child produced in that marital bed, however, not only cloaks the failure of racial reproduction in the living proof of success but also occludes the male/male union that subtends the heteronormative fantasy of reproduction. …

Modeling Autonomous Agents In Military Simulations, Varol Kaptan Jan 2006

Modeling Autonomous Agents In Military Simulations, Varol Kaptan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Simulation is an important tool for prediction and assessment of the behavior of complex systems and situations. The importance of simulation has increased tremendously during the last few decades, mainly because the rapid pace of development in the field of electronics has turned the computer from a costly and obscure piece of equipment to a cheap ubiquitous tool which is now an integral part of our daily lives. While such technological improvements make it easier to analyze well-understood deterministic systems, increase in speed and storage capacity alone are not enough when simulating situations where human beings and their behavior are …

Chemical And Biological Treatment Of Mature Landfill Leachate, Eyad Batarseh Jan 2006

Chemical And Biological Treatment Of Mature Landfill Leachate, Eyad Batarseh

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The challenges imposed on Voltage Regulator Modules (VRM) become difficult to be achieved with the conventional multiphase buck converter commonly used on PC motherboards. For faster data transfer, a decrease in the output voltage is needed. This decrease causes small duty cycle that is accompanied by critical problems which impairs the efficiency. Therefore, these problems need to be addressed. Transformer-based non-isolated topologies are not new approaches to extend the duty cycle and avoid the associated drawbacks. High leakage, several added components and complicated driving and control schemes are some of the trade-offs to expand the duty cycle. The objective of …

Characterization Of Critical Network Components Of Coupled Oscillators, Gregory Holifield Jan 2006

Characterization Of Critical Network Components Of Coupled Oscillators, Gregory Holifield

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation analyzes the fundamental limits for the determination of the network structure of loosely coupled oscillators based on observing the behavior of the network, specifically, node synchronization. The determination of the requisite characteristics and underlying behaviors necessary for the application of a theoretical mechanism for determining the underlying network topology in a network of loosely coupled natural oscillators are the desired outcome. To that end, this effort defines an analytical framework where key components of networks of coupled oscillators are isolated in order to determine the relationships between the various components. The relationship between the number of nodes in …
