Aristotle On The Mechanisms Of Inheritance, Devin Henry
Aristotle On The Mechanisms Of Inheritance, Devin Henry
Data and Test Instruments
In this paper I address an important question in Aristotle’s biology, What are the causal mechanisms behind the transmission of biological form? Aristotle’s answer to this question, I argue, is found in Generation of Animals Book 4 in connection with his investigation into the phenomenon of inheritance. There we are told that an organism’s reproductive material contains a set of ‘‘movements’’ which are derived from the various ‘‘potentials’’ of its nature (the internal principle of change that initiates and controls development). These ‘‘movements,’’ I suggest, function as specialized vehicles for com- municating the parts of the parent’s heritable form during …

Paradox, Rodger K. Bufford
Paradox, Rodger K. Bufford
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Excerpt: "‘Paradox’ is derived from two words that literally mean against opinion. The Oxford English Dictionary (1989; vol. 11, p. 185) identifies several meanings for ‘paradox’. It may refer to: (1) claims contrary to common opinion, often suggesting that the statement is incredible, absurd or fantastic, but sometimes with a favourable connotation as a correction for ignorance; (2) a statement that seems self-contradictory, but which is actually well founded; (3) a statement that involves a genuine *contradiction; (4) in *logic, a conclusion based on acceptable premises and sound *reasoning that nonetheless is self-contradictory. These inconsistent uses of the term pose …

Results For Nebraska, Models For The Nation
University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications
The University of Nebraska Public Policy Center has impacted policy-relevant change throughout the state and in national policy efforts as well. Here’s a quick look at some of our outcomes “by the numbers” over the past three years:
• Administered Minority and Justice Initiative, which, among other reforms, brought about the passage of two Nebraska state laws to improve the representativeness of juries.
• Awarded $1.5 million to organizations involved in providing behavioral health services to Nebraskans.
• Trained nearly 600 school personnel, health care professionals, faith leaders, and community members to provide psychological first-aid services in response to disasters. …

Choice V. Chance: The Constitutional Case For Regulating Human Germline Genetic Modification, Nancy Pham
Choice V. Chance: The Constitutional Case For Regulating Human Germline Genetic Modification, Nancy Pham
UC Law Constitutional Quarterly
With the rapid rate of advancing technology, human germline intervention ("HGGM") may be possible in the near future. But, is access to HGGM technology a constitutionally protected right? Under traditional substantive due process, constitutional protection turns on whether the right is fundamental. If the courts determine that access to HGGM is a fundamental right, then it would fall in line with the category of reproductive decision-making cases such as Griswold v. Connecticut. Moreover, such a classification would require states to have a compelling interest before restricting the right at all. However, if HGGM is not a fundamental right, then states …

Catching Up To Our Biometric Future: Fourth Amendment Privacy Rights And Biometric Identification Technology, Rudy Ng
UC Law SF Communications and Entertainment Journal
As biometric identification technology companies strive to make their products more accurate, faster, and more affordable for the mass market, the public is likely to see an increase in the use of biometrics in the future. While emerging biometric identification technology such as iris scanning and face recognition technology may be a fast, cutting-edge way for law enforcement to keep track of convicted felons and suspected terrorists, the government should not be allowed to unreasonably intrude on individual privacy rights under the Fourth Amendment. Ultimately, the legislature and the courts will need to weigh society's need to feel secure against …
