Complexity Measures Of Biological Sequences, Hebatallah Anbeer Jan 2006

Complexity Measures Of Biological Sequences, Hebatallah Anbeer

Digitized Theses

In this thesis we define a new complexity measure for biological (DNA) sequences. Our research was guided by the hypothesis that genomic sequences have some structure that makes them different from random sequences. We aimed thus to find a syntactical complexity measure that is minimized (in absolute value) by random strings and applied it to biological sequences. The complexity measure that we found satisfied this and several other constraints is the n-subword complexity of a word w, defined as the number of different subwords of length n present in w. In addition we defined a new measure that is related …

Molecular And Biochemical Characterization Of Arabidopsis Arogenate Dehydratases, Oliver Ryan Ardiel Corea Jan 2006

Molecular And Biochemical Characterization Of Arabidopsis Arogenate Dehydratases, Oliver Ryan Ardiel Corea

Digitized Theses

Six putative arogenate dehydratases (ADT) isoforms have been identified in Arabidopsis thaliana, but are listed online as prephenate dehydratases (PDTs) based on sequence similarity. To determine whether the putative Arabidopsis ADTs recognise arogenate, prephenate, or both, individual isoforms were analysed using a molecular and biochemical approach. An extensive in silico analysis showed that while putative plant ADT sequences form a distinct group from bacterial and yeast sequences, they share all sequence motifs that were identified through mutagenic studies as being essential for function. Putative ADTs were cloned into a Saccharomyces cerevisiae and two Escherichia coli expression systems, and expressed as …

Does Iron Play A Photoprotective Role In Cadmium-Exposed Cannabis Sativa L?, Mey Abdawi-Moussa Jan 2006

Does Iron Play A Photoprotective Role In Cadmium-Exposed Cannabis Sativa L?, Mey Abdawi-Moussa

Digitized Theses

Cadmium (Cd) is a heavy metal becoming more abundant in the environment as a result of phosphate fertilizers. Cannabis sativa L. (hemp) is tolerant to Cd levels which are considered toxic to other plant species (Ahmed, 2003). Upon exposure to toxic levels of Cd, there is a redistribution of iron (Fe) from the roots of hemp into the leaves (Ahmed, 2003). Hemp plants were exposed to ImM and 10mM Cd and grown at levels ofFe that were determined deficient, normal and excess to hemp plants. Photosynthetic efficiency, metal content and pigment analysis were performed on these plants. Plants showed a …

Development Of Dual-Particle Liquid Solid Circulating Fluidized Bed (Dp-Lscfb) Fermenter For Lactic Acid Production, Manojkumar Patel Jan 2006

Development Of Dual-Particle Liquid Solid Circulating Fluidized Bed (Dp-Lscfb) Fermenter For Lactic Acid Production, Manojkumar Patel

Digitized Theses

Lactic acid is an organic acid and is widely used in different applications for years. Lactic acid is also a precursor for most promising biodegradable polymer. In the past two decades, biological production of lactic acid is growing exponentially and leads to major interest for researchers. However, the biological production of this enigmatic chemical is associated with problems of product inhibition and separation. Many reactor systems and separation technologies have been proposed but discovery is by far from ending. Fluidized bed reactors have many advantages over fixed bed and continuous stirred tank reactors, such as better heat and mass transfer. …

Eating Behaviour Of Insectivorous Bats, Erin Elizabeth Fraser Jan 2006

Eating Behaviour Of Insectivorous Bats, Erin Elizabeth Fraser

Digitized Theses

Eating behaviour in animals can vary with age, sex and foraging strategy and as a function of food hardness. Such variation may contribute to observed dietary differences within and among species and could indicate variation in the optimal foraging strategies of intra- and inter-specific groups. I tested the ability of Ontario insectivorous bats to consume hard and soft mealworm-based food items. I quantified feeding behaviour based on the bats’ ability to consume and manipulate the food item, consumption time, chew frequency and total chews to consume. Based on age-specific differences in these variables, adult Myotis lucifugus were superior to subadults …

Exoenzyme Production By Marine Phytoplankton, Monica Klein Jan 2006

Exoenzyme Production By Marine Phytoplankton, Monica Klein

Digitized Theses

The supply and speciation of different forms of nitrogen and iron are important nutritional parameters influencing the growth, production, and composition of protist communities. While most cells access macronutrients in the inorganic form, some cells are successful in competing for the dissolved organic forms of these elements by producing extracellular enzymes, enabling them to access nutrients. The EnzCheck protease assay was used to assay if marine phytoplankton produced extracellular proteases in response to two environmental conditions: the supply of nitrogen and the supply of iron in the inorganic or organically complexed form. A broad survey of phytoplankton illustrated the diversity …

Evidence For The Physiological Regulation Of Carbohydrate And Lipid Metabolism By Peram-Hth-Ii In The Cockroach (Periplaneta Americana), Julia-Lynn Michitsch Jan 2006

Evidence For The Physiological Regulation Of Carbohydrate And Lipid Metabolism By Peram-Hth-Ii In The Cockroach (Periplaneta Americana), Julia-Lynn Michitsch

Digitized Theses

This study demonstrates that hypertrehalosemic hormone-II (Peram-HTH-II) stimulates carbohydrate and lipid metabolism in the American cockroach, Periplaneta americana. The hypertrehalosemic and hypolipemic effect of HTH-II in hemolymph was shown to be dose- and time-dependant. The low dose of HTH-II required to produce these effects is less than that known to be contained in the corpus cardiacum, and as such could be representative of the amount of hormone naturally released into the blood of the insect. The duration of the effect of HTH-II was shown to be comparable for both carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, suggesting that both events may be required …

Experiments In Vuv And Visible Wavelength Maldi Using A Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer, Diane Lacey Jan 2006

Experiments In Vuv And Visible Wavelength Maldi Using A Triple Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer, Diane Lacey

Digitized Theses

Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption Ionization (MALDI) is an analytical technique that has been used extensively to vaporize and ionize non-volatile biological samples. MALDI has been used successfully to “soft” ionize peptides, proteins and other large molecules. Concurrent detection of neutrals and ions in the MALDI process has shown that the degree of ionization is on the order of ~0.01%. Laser desorption followed by laser post-ionization should significantly improve the sensitivity of the MALDI technique. Coherent VUV sources generated by non-linear optical methods such as third harmonic generation are excellent soft-ionization sources able to ionize most organic molecules having ionization potentials …

Fungi Associated With Costa Rican Caterpillar, Mirjam Urb

Digitized Theses

Caterpillars, the larvae of Lepidoptera, are the main herbivores in many forests of ? ; . ! j i i 1 ! 4 : : the world. Foliage-feeding caterpillars also consume microbes, including fungi, occurring on and in leaves. If these fungi pass unharmed through the digestive tract, it should be possible to culture them also from caterpillar guts and frass. The purpose of this study was to assess and compare fungal communities associated with two Saturniidae caterpillars foraging on six host plants in the dry forest of Area de Conservaciôn Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Morphological and molecular identification of 835 …

Functional Analysis Of The Promoter Of A Seed Coat-Specific Gene, Scsi, Zihong Song Jan 2006

Functional Analysis Of The Promoter Of A Seed Coat-Specific Gene, Scsi, Zihong Song

Digitized Theses

The promoter and leader sequences (-2271-+178) of a soybean seed coat-specific gene SCSI (Seed Coat Subtilisin 1) were analyzed for regulatory activity by transient and stable expression in tobacco using GUS gene fusions in different vectors. The results showed that the region of -2271-+178 conferred seed coat-specific GUS expression in transgenic tobacco. The untranslated leader sequence (+1-+178) was shown to be responsible for the seed coat-specific activity, while the up stream region (-2271—50) was observed to control the quantity of expression. Enhanced GUS activity promoted by the leader sequence of the SCSI gene was also observed. In contrast, identical configuration …

A Nuclear Rdna Phylogeny Of Smilax (Smilacaceae), Kenneth M. Cameron, Chengxin Fu Jan 2006

A Nuclear Rdna Phylogeny Of Smilax (Smilacaceae), Kenneth M. Cameron, Chengxin Fu

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Smilacaceae are a taxonomically confused, cosmopolitan family of Liliales characterized by climbing habit, reticulate leaf venation, paired petiolar tendrils, unisexual flowers, and superior ovaries. Deviations from this generalized morphology have led to the division of Smilacaceae into at least seven different genera and five sections within the large genus Smilax. In particular, taxa with connate tepals (Heterosmilax), more than six stamens (Pleiosmilax, Oligosmilax), or herbaceous habit (Hemexia) have been variously classified. Using DNA sequences of 96 taxa from the nuclear rDNA ITS gene region, parsimony analyses provide moderate resolution, but generally poor bootstrap support …

Differences That Matter: Canada, The United States And Environmental Policymaking, Leslie R. Alm, Ross E. Burkhart Jan 2006

Differences That Matter: Canada, The United States And Environmental Policymaking, Leslie R. Alm, Ross E. Burkhart

Political Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

Does the way Canada, as a nation state, approach international environmental policymaking make a difference with respect to solving environmental problems in the Americas? We argue that it does, and it is a difference that matters. Canadian efforts toward multilateralism and toward inclusiveness (e.g., willingness to work with weaker nations) serve as a counter balance to the growing unilateralism and ever present exceptionalism of the United States, currently the most powerful country in the world, and Canada’s southern neighbor and regional partner in developing environmental policy that affects the northern Americas directly and all of the Americas indirectly. Our argument …

A Molecular Dissection Of The Mating System In The Bluntnose Minnow, Pimephales Notatus, Rebecca Abrasheff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In the mating system of the bluntnose minnow, Pimephales notatus, females partition their eggs among several nests, depositing eggs on the underside of rocks that are prepared, tended, and cared for by the males. In this study, I genotyped embryos from 10 nests along with their respective guarding males using 5 microsatellite markers to reveal alternative reproductive tactics employed in high-density and low-density populations. Comparing the multilocus genotype of each guarding male to those of the guarded embryos, genetic signatures of cuckoldry and nest-guard swapping were revealed. The average percentage of allopaternal care occurring in the nests was 67.8%, which …

Empirical Validation Of The S-Score Algorithm In The Analysis Of Gene Expression Data, Richard Ellis Kennedy, Kellie J. Archer, Michael F. Miles

Biostatistics Publications

Background Current methods of analyzing Affymetrix GeneChip® microarray data require the estimation of probe set expression summaries, followed by application of statistical tests to determine which genes are differentially expressed. The S-Score algorithm described by Zhang and colleagues is an alternative method that allows tests of hypotheses directly from probe level data. It is based on an error model in which the detected signal is proportional to the probe pair signal for highly expressed genes, but approaches a background level (rather than 0) for genes with low levels of expression. This model is used to calculate relative change in probe …
