Show Me The Numbers: What Data Currently Exist For Non‐Native Species In The Usa?, Alycia W. Crall, Laura A. Meyerson, Thomas J. Stohlgren, Catherine S. Jarnevich, Gregory J. Newman, Jim Graham

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Non‐native species continue to be introduced to the United States from other countries via trade and transportation, creating a growing need for early detection and rapid response to new invaders. It is therefore increasingly important to synthesize existing data on non‐native species abundance and distributions. However, no comprehensive analysis of existing data has been undertaken for non‐native species, and there have been few efforts to improve collaboration. We therefore conducted a survey to determine what datasets currently exist for non‐native species in the US from county, state, multi‐state region, national, and global scales. We identified 319 datasets and collected metadata …

Exchange Coupling And Contribution Of Induced Orbital Angular Momentum Of Low-Spin Fe^3+ Ions To Magnetic Anisotropy In Cyanide-Bridged Fe2m2 Molecular Magnets: Spin-Polarized Density-Functional Calculations, Stephen Holmes, Kyungwha Park Jan 2006

Exchange Coupling And Contribution Of Induced Orbital Angular Momentum Of Low-Spin Fe^3+ Ions To Magnetic Anisotropy In Cyanide-Bridged Fe2m2 Molecular Magnets: Spin-Polarized Density-Functional Calculations, Stephen Holmes, Kyungwha Park

Chemistry & Biochemistry Faculty Works

Electronic structure and intramolecular exchange constants are calculated for three cyanide-bridged molecular magnets, [Tp⋆FeIII(CN)3MII(DMF)4]2(OTf)2∙2DMF (MII=Mn,Co,Ni) (abbreviated as Fe2Mn2, Fe2Co2, and Fe2Ni2) that have been recently synthesized, within a generalized-gradient approximation in spin-polarized density-functional theory (DFT). Here Tp⋆=[C3(CH3)2HN2]3BH, OTf=O3SCF3, and DMF=HCON(CH3)2. Due to strong ligand fields present in the [Tp⋆FeIII(CN)3]− units, the Fe3+ ions exhibit a low ground-state spin of S=1/2. Our calculations show that the metal ions in the Fe2Mn2 molecule interact antiferromagnetically via cyanide ligands, while those in the Fe2Co2 and Fe2Ni2 molecule interact ferromagnetically. The calculations also suggest that the smallest gaps between the highest occupied molecular orbital …

Predator Survival Tactics And Use Of Habitat Cover In Rana Catesbeiana., Tara E. Bergin Jan 2006

Predator Survival Tactics And Use Of Habitat Cover In Rana Catesbeiana., Tara E. Bergin

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

Predator-prey relationships are an important aspect of the natural world, and, because of its relevance to survival and natural selection, is an interesting relationship to study. In amphibian larvae, level of activity and landscape use are often what determines the survival as prey. I studied the anti-predator behavior of the North American bullfrog (Rana catesbeiana) tadpoles when presented with dragonfly (Aeshna) larvae, a known predator of tadpoles. Tadpoles were acclimated to four different habitats with varying degrees of habitat cover, and were transferred to a new habitat with a degree of cover equal to one of the acclimation tanks. A …

The Family Novel In The Emerging Nation-State: A Comparative Study Of Ba Jin’S Jia And Lev Tolstoy’S Anna Karenina, Adil D'Sousa Jan 2006

The Family Novel In The Emerging Nation-State: A Comparative Study Of Ba Jin’S Jia And Lev Tolstoy’S Anna Karenina, Adil D'Sousa

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

The theme of family in literature and in popular discourse occurs at times when the family as an institution is under attack. Attacks against the family coupled with defence of the family are viewed as the barometer of people’s satisfaction with the society in which they live. This outpouring of emotion, whether it is in defence of or attacking the family, is the result of the family’s position on the bridge between nature and society – a fortunate (or a detrimental) link between an individual and the units that make up a society. Across the United States and much of …

Overexpression And Purification Of The Oat (Avena Fatua) Protein Afn1 And Construction Of A Pmal/Afn1 Expression Plasmid, Tenzin D. Tsewang Jan 2006

Overexpression And Purification Of The Oat (Avena Fatua) Protein Afn1 And Construction Of A Pmal/Afn1 Expression Plasmid, Tenzin D. Tsewang

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

Abscisic acid (ABA) is an important phytohormone with regulatory roles in many physiological processes. ABA expression is induced by environmental stresses such as drought and it is known to be an inhibitor of seed germination. A wild oat (Avena fatua) called AFN1 has been hypothesized to initiate the early stages of germination as its mRNA accumulates in nondormant seed embryos during imbibition. The polypeptide sequence of AFN1 suggests that it is an ABA glucosyl transferase. Glucosylation by AFN1 and thereby inactivation of ABA could lead to seed germination. In order to understand the role of AFN1 in germination, an ample …

The Economic Effects Of Ski Resorts On Communities In The State Of Maine, Rachel Freierman Jan 2006

The Economic Effects Of Ski Resorts On Communities In The State Of Maine, Rachel Freierman

Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)

Skiing and snowboarding is a fairly expensive activity for participant and one in which the industry as a whole makes handsome profits. In the 2005/06 season, resorts in the Northeast reported an average gross revenue of $18.5 million. (NSAA) With the current weather phenomenon of El Nino, however, resorts in New England especially, have been suffering economically. The gross revenue in New England in the ’05/’06 season was down 4% from the previous year, likely due to the fact the total snowfall declined by 16%. (NSAA) Much of this loss in revenue came during the Christmas to New Years vacation …

The ever growing need for security in today' s world requires exploring the feasibility of various security methods to ensure the safety of the world's population. With the tremendous growth of technology, e-commerce, and business globalization, society implements new methods to try to battle security problems. Technology advances has resulted in a number of inexpensive biometric devices to the marketplace. Two questions surface regarding this devices-are they reliable enough for general usage and will people be willing to use them? This research conducted a repeated design experiment to determine the effectiveness of four inexpensive biometric devices-three fingerprint readers and an …

Evaluation Of Rice Hulls As A Lignocellulosic Substitute In Wood Plastic Composites, P. Jack Bourne Jan 2006

Evaluation Of Rice Hulls As A Lignocellulosic Substitute In Wood Plastic Composites, P. Jack Bourne

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Rising raw material costs and shortage of woody materials necessitate alternative sources for lignocellulosic material in wood plastic composites (WPC). This study was conducted to evaluate rice hull (RH), an agricultural residue, as a cellulosic substitute in WPC. Samples were fabricated with approximately 4% zinc stearate, 48% high-density polyethylene obtained from recycled plastics and 48% lignocellulosic material by mass. The composition of the lignocellulosic material was changed from 0 to 100% RH at 20% increments while the remainder was wood flour. The extruded sampled were tested for mechanical properties such as specific gravity, water absorption, linear coefficients of thermal expansion, …

Development Of Gendered Space: The Archaic And Classical Greek Temple, Callie Williams Jan 2006

Development Of Gendered Space: The Archaic And Classical Greek Temple, Callie Williams

Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal

Throughout the ancient Greek world, temples marked the landscape as a sign of Greek civilization. Although Greek temples hare been examined, described, and catalogued scientifically since archaeology came of age in the 18th century, the question of their cultural significance in their original Greek context has vet to be fully answered. Many twentieth-century interpreters tended to yoke the history of Greek temples to narratives of modernism, resulting in anachronistic conclusions. Current trends in architectural history have begun to test other interpretative strategies, such as the interrelationship between architecture and the emergence of Greek philosophy. This essay explores the possibilities of …

Incest And Empire In The Faerie Queene, Kent Lehnhof Jan 2006

Incest And Empire In The Faerie Queene, Kent Lehnhof

English Faculty Articles and Research

"When considered in the context of Elizabeth's effort to silence all discussion of incest, Edmund Spenser's courtly epic aiming to cultivate favor with the monarch looks like a disastrous miscalculation, for incest appears throughout The Faerie Queene. Indeed, incest sits at the center (both literally and figuratively) of the Book of Chastity, the very book wherein Spenser encourages Elizabeth 'in mirrours more then one her selfe to see.' In the present essay, I investigate the apparently illogical and impolitic prominence afforded to incest in book three of The Faerie Queene, ultimately arguing that the imperialist logic underpinning the epic is …

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder In Children And Adolescents, Bethany E. Giere

Honors Capstones

The focus of this research paper is to better understand obsessive compulsive disorders, also known as OCD, in children and adolescents. I feel that in order to teach children and adolescents with OCD we, as teachers, need to understand the disorder. I want to be able to help students that may be in my classroom with this disorder. If I understand the disorder I can find the best way to teach the student. I will also be able to help the other students in the class to understand what that child is going through. This capstone project will assist me …

The Depth And Breadth Of Google Scholar: An Empirical Study, Chris F. Neuhaus, Ellen E. Neuhaus, Clint Wrede, Alan Asher

Library Faculty/Staff Publications

The introduction of Google Scholar in November 2004 was accompanied by fanfare, skepticism, and numerous questions about the scope and coverage of this database. Nearly one year after its inception, many of these questions remain unanswered. This study compares the contents of 47 different databases with that of Google Scholar. Included in this investigation are tests for Google Scholar publication date and publication language bias, as well as a study of upload frequency. Tests show Google Scholar’s current strengths to be coverage of science and medical databases, open access databases, and single publisher databases. Current weaknesses include lack of coverage …

Corrigendum To Diffusivity And Viscosity Dependence In The Linear Thermocline (J. Mar. Res., 62, 743–769), J. H. Lacasce Jan 2006

Corrigendum To Diffusivity And Viscosity Dependence In The Linear Thermocline (J. Mar. Res., 62, 743–769), J. H. Lacasce

Journal of Marine Research

The statement in LaCasce (2004) that the amplitude, A, of the western boundary layer solution (Eq. 25 in the article) is determined by matching at the northern wall to the streamfunction from the northern boundary inner layer solution, ϕin, is incorrect. The correct procedure is to match to the full boundary layer solution at the northern wall, with contributions from both the inner and outer layers. Doing this ensures that the full transport in the northern layer is fed into the western layer...

Tidal Energy In The Bering Sea, M. G. G. Foreman, P. F. Cummins, J. Y. Cherniawsky, Phyllis Stabeno Jan 2006

Tidal Energy In The Bering Sea, M. G. G. Foreman, P. F. Cummins, J. Y. Cherniawsky, Phyllis Stabeno

Journal of Marine Research

Tidal harmonics computed from TOPEX/POSEIDON altimetry are assimilated into a barotropic, finite element model of the Bering Sea whose accuracy is evaluated though comparisons with independent bottom pressure gauges. The model is used to estimate energy fluxes through each of the Aleutian Passes and Bering Strait and to construct an energy budget for the major tidal constituents. The finite element model does not conserve mass locally and this is shown to give rise to an additional term in the energy budget whose contribution is significant for the prior model, but which is reduced substantially with the assimilation technique. Though the …

Estimation Of Nonlocal Turbulent Mixing Parameters Derived From Microstructure Profiles, Jaume Piera, Ruben Quesada, Jordi Catalan Jan 2006

Estimation Of Nonlocal Turbulent Mixing Parameters Derived From Microstructure Profiles, Jaume Piera, Ruben Quesada, Jordi Catalan

Journal of Marine Research

The present study proposes a new method for estimating nonlocal mixing parameters from microstructure data processing. The method could be particularly useful in studies of biological-physical interactions at small scale because it overcomes some of the limitations of the eddy diffusivity concept when dealing with the complex vertical pattern of biological and chemical tracers. The proposed method obtains empirically the coefficients of the transilient matrix, this being the discrete descriptor used in nonlocal mixing closure. The estimation is based on microstructure data analysis, in particular Thorpe displacement profiles, and includes three main steps: turbulent patch identification within each profile, turbulent …

Transfer Of Particulate Matter From The Northwestern Mediterranean Continental Margin: Variability And Controlling Factors, M. Guarracino, B. Barnier, P. Marsaleix, X. Durrieu De Madron, A. Monaco, K. Escoubeyrou, J. C. Marty Jan 2006

Transfer Of Particulate Matter From The Northwestern Mediterranean Continental Margin: Variability And Controlling Factors, M. Guarracino, B. Barnier, P. Marsaleix, X. Durrieu De Madron, A. Monaco, K. Escoubeyrou, J. C. Marty

Journal of Marine Research

Long-term observations of monthly downward particle fluxes and hourly currents and temperature were initiated in 1993 in two canyons of the continental margin of the Gulf of Lion. The goals of this survey were to estimate its contribution to the CO2 global budget and to understand the role of forcing factors in the control of present-day particle exchange across this margin. A previous statistical analysis of the long-term time series suggested that variability in the transfer of particulate matter to the deep ocean could be the result of the effect of the meandering of the Northern Current and by …
