Australian Temperate Strawberry Breeding Program (Western Australia) Selection Of New And Advanced Short Day Breeding Lines And Cultivars In Western Australia - 2005/2006, Michaela Antoine, Dennis Phillips

Horticulture research reports

Sixty-eight 'short day' selections from the Australian Temperate breeding program were compared in a trial planting on a commercial property at Wanneroo from a mid May planting. Thirty-three of the selections were derived from crosses made in 2003 (new Stage 4 selections) and twenty-nine were from crosses made between 1998 and 2002 (Intermediate Stages 5 and 6). In addition, three advanced selections were compared in large plots of 1,000-1 ,500 plants together with three commercial control cultivars, Gaviota, Camino Real and Kiewa. These selections were 'fast tracked' for future commercialisation by being selected for bulking up in September 2004.

A Highly Efficient Transient Protoplast System For Analyzing Defence Gene Expression And Protein–Protein Interactions In Rice, Songbiao Chen, Lizen Tao, Lirong Zeng, Miguel E. Vega-Zanchez, Kenji Umemura, Guo-Liang Wang Jan 2006

A Highly Efficient Transient Protoplast System For Analyzing Defence Gene Expression And Protein–Protein Interactions In Rice, Songbiao Chen, Lizen Tao, Lirong Zeng, Miguel E. Vega-Zanchez, Kenji Umemura, Guo-Liang Wang

Center for Plant Science Innovation: Faculty Publications

The transient assay system based on mesophyll or cultured cell-derived protoplasts has been exploited in several plant species and has become a powerful tool for rapid gene functional analysis and biochemical manipulations. However, the system has not been widely used in rice owing to the difficulties in large-scale isolation of viable rice protoplasts from leaves or suspension-cultured cells. Here, we describe a significantly improved method to isolate a large number of protoplasts from stem and sheath tissues of both young and mature plants. High-level coexpression of multiple constructs and efficient suppression of exogenous and endogenous genes were observed in the …

Natural Abundance Of Foliar 15N As An Early Indicator Of Nitrogen Deficiency In Fertilized Cotton, S. Stamatiadis, C. Christofides, C. Tsadilas, V. Samaras, James S. Schepers

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Information on the contribution of various soil nitrogen (N) sources to plant N uptake is often needed for the implementation of sustainable or site-specific management practices in agriculture. Considering the limitations of traditional methods in meeting these needs, this study investigated the potential of leaf δ15N as an early indicator of nutrient deficiency in cotton. The spatial and temporal natural abundance of 15N was measured in the soil and leaves of a fertilized cotton field located near the village of Moschochori (Larissa, Greece). The isotopic signal of the leaves was interpreted in the context of the relative …

Application Of Relative Drought Indices In Assessing Climate-Change Impacts On Drought Conditions In Czechia, M. Dubrovsky, Mark D. Svoboda, M. Trnka, Michael J. Hayes, Donald A. Wilhite, Z. Zalud, P. Hlavinka

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

The common versions (referred to as self-calibrated here) of the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) and the Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) are calibrated and then applied to the same weather series. Therefore, the distribution of the index values is about the same for any weather series. We introduce here the relative SPI and PDSI, abbreviated as rSPI and rPDSI. These are calibrated using a reference weather series as a first step, which is then applied to the tested series. The reference series may result from either a different station to allow for the interstation comparison or from a different period …

Estimating Hydrodynamic Quantities In The Presence Of Microscopic Fluctuations, Alejandro Garcia Jan 2006

Estimating Hydrodynamic Quantities In The Presence Of Microscopic Fluctuations, Alejandro Garcia

Faculty Publications

This paper discusses the evaluation of hydrodynamic variables in the presence of spontaneous fluctuations, such as in molecular simulations of fluid flows. The principal point is that hydrodynamic variables such as fluid velocity and temperature must be defined in terms of mechanical variables such as momentum and energy density). Because these relations are nonlinear and because fluctuations of mechanical variables are correlated, care must be taken to avoid introducing a bias when evaluating means, variances, and correlations of hydrodynamic variables. The unbiased estimates are formulated; some alternative, incorrect approaches are presented as cautionary warnings. The expressions are verified by numerical …

Notopleural Mutations Enhance Defects In Imaginal Disc Epithelial Morphogenesis And Macrochete Elongation Associated With Mutations In The Stubble-Stubbloid Locus, Robert Ruggiero Jan 2006

Notopleural Mutations Enhance Defects In Imaginal Disc Epithelial Morphogenesis And Macrochete Elongation Associated With Mutations In The Stubble-Stubbloid Locus, Robert Ruggiero

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Stubble-stubbloid locus encodes a transmembrane serine protease (Stubble) necessary for the proper formation of sensory bristles, and the morphogenesis of leg and wing epithelia. Genetic and cell biological analysis indicate a role for Stubble in actin cytoskeletal dynamics and cell shape changes in developing epithelia and bristles. Previously reported genetic interactions between Stubble and the Rho1 signaling pathway suggest Stubble influences actin cytoskeleton dynamics in developing imaginal discs through interactions with the Rho1 pathway. This work will discuss a genetic screen conducted to further investigate the role of Stubble in bristle and imaginal disc morphogenesis. From 50,000 EMS-mutagenized chromosomes …

Behavioral Observations Of Western Lowland Gorillas: Understanding The Relationship Between Diets And Behaviors In Primate Bachelor Groups, Chelsea E. Quinn

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Gorillas are one of the many animals throughout the world that are an endangered species. Studies have also shown that, genetically speaking; gorillas are closely related to humans. Because of this it should be a high priority of all people to better understand these creatures and their biology and behavior. Currently the Jacksonville Zoo is home to four male Western Lowland gorillas. These gorillas demonstrate some abnormal behaviors; behaviors that are not seen with regularity in the wild. These behaviors include regurgitating and then re-eating consumed foods and eating feces. This study explored the possibility that these abnormal behaviors are …

Functional Properties Of The Isomorphic Biphasic Algal Life Cycle, Carol S. Thornber Jan 2006

Functional Properties Of The Isomorphic Biphasic Algal Life Cycle, Carol S. Thornber

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Many species of marine algae have life cycles that involve multiple separate, free-living phases that frequently differ in ploidy levels. These complex life cycles have received increasing scientific attention over the past few decades, due to their usefulness for both ecological and evolutionary studies. I present a synthesis of our current knowledge of the ecological functioning and evolutionary implications of the isomorphic, biphasic life cycles commonly found in many species of marine algae. There are both costs and benefits to life cycles with 2 morphologically similar but separate, free-living phases that differ in ploidy levels (haploids and diploids). Evolutionary theory …

Multiplex Quantitative Real-Time Reverse Transcriptase Pcr For F+-Specific Rna Coliphages: A Method For Use In Microbial Source Tracking, Merek Kirs, David C. Smith Jan 2006

Multiplex Quantitative Real-Time Reverse Transcriptase Pcr For F+-Specific Rna Coliphages: A Method For Use In Microbial Source Tracking, Merek Kirs, David C. Smith

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

It is well documented that microbial contamination of coastal waters poses a significant risk to human health through recreational exposure and consumption of shellfish. Identifying the source of microbial contamination (microbial source tracking) plays a dominant role in enabling effective management and remediation strategies. One method used to determine the source of the contamination is quantification of the ratio of the four subgroups of F+-specific RNA coliphages (family Leviviridae) in impacted water samples. Because of typically low concentrations in the environment, enrichment assays are performed prior to detection, even though differential replication rates have been reported. These …

Displacement Of Histones At Promoters Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Heat Shock Genes Is Differentially Associated With Histone H3 Acetylation, Tamara Y. Erkina, Alexander M. Erkine Jan 2006

Displacement Of Histones At Promoters Of Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Heat Shock Genes Is Differentially Associated With Histone H3 Acetylation, Tamara Y. Erkina, Alexander M. Erkine

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

Chromatin remodeling at promoters of activated genes spans from mild histone modifications to outright displacement of nucleosomes in trans. Factors affecting these events are not always clear. Our results indicate that histone H3 acetylation associated with histone displacement differs drastically even between promoters of such closely related heat shock genes as HSP12, SSA4, and HSP82. The HSP12 promoter, with the highest level of histone displacement, showed the highest level of H3 acetylation, while the SSA4 promoter, with a lower histone displacement, showed only modest H3 acetylation. Moreover, for the HSP12 promoter, the level of acetylated H3 …

Effects Of Lesions Of The Bed Nucleus Of The Stria Terminalis, Laterual Hypothalamus, Or Insular Cortex On Conditioned Taste Aversion And Conditioned Odor Aversion, Christopher T. Roman, Nino Nebieridze, Aristides Sastre, Steve Reilly

Scholarship and Professional Work – COPHS

The effects of permanent forebrain lesions on conditioned taste aversions (CTAs) and conditioned odor aversions (COAs) were examined in 3 experiments. In Experiment 1, lesions of the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis had no influence on CTA or COA acquisition. Although lesions of the lateral hypothalamus induced severe hypodipsia in Experiment 2, they did not prevent the acquisition of CTAs or COAs. Finally, in Experiment 3, lesions of the insular cortex retarded CTA acquisition but had no influence on COA acquisition. The implications of these findings are discussed with regard to the forebrain influence on parabrachial nucleus function during …
