Ultrafiltration Membrane Process For Pyrogen Removal In The Preparation Of Water For Injection (Wfi), Thet N. Soe
Ultrafiltration Membrane Process For Pyrogen Removal In The Preparation Of Water For Injection (Wfi), Thet N. Soe
Inquiry: The University of Arkansas Undergraduate Research Journal
An artificial kidney process based on ultrafiltration (called hemodiafiltration) more effectively removes blood toxins, particularly those of higher molecular weight, than conventional dialysis. In hemodiafiltration, replacement liquid must be added directly to the patient's blood to replace liquid filtered out of the blood in the ultrafiltration cartridge. This replacement liquid is made up of' "water for injection" (WFI) and other components such as salts and glucose. WFI is produced either by distillation or reverse osmosis and has a cost of $1.00 per liter. A patient with kidney problems would require three hemodiafiltration treatments per week, each requiring 70-80 liters of …

The Effect Of Olanzapine On Craving And Alcohol Consumption, Kent E. Hutchinson, Lara Ray, Erica Sandman, Marie-Christine Rutter Goodworth, Annie Peters, Dena Davidson, Robert Swift
Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program
Previous studies have indicated that olanzapine decreases craving after a priming dose of alcohol, that craving after a priming dose of alcohol is greater among individuals with the seven-repeat allele of the DRD4 variable number of tandem repeats (VNTR) polymorphism, and that the effect of olanzapine (a D2/D4 antagonist) is more pronounced among individuals with this allele. The present study tested the hypothesis that olanzapine may be differentially effective at reducing cue-elicited craving and differentially effective as a treatment for alcohol dependence over the course of a 12-week, randomized, placebo-controlled trial among individuals with and without the seven-repeat allele. Participants …
Ecology And Biologically Based Management Of Cereal Stemborers On Maize And Sorghum In The Amhara State Of Ethiopia, Ferede Melaku Wale
Ecology And Biologically Based Management Of Cereal Stemborers On Maize And Sorghum In The Amhara State Of Ethiopia, Ferede Melaku Wale
All PhD Dissertations
A series of studies were conducted in an attempt to establish baseline data on the importance and geographic distribution of stemborers and to determine key interactions among a whole range of factors, abiotic - i.e., soil fertility - and biotici. e., host plants, intercrops, planting time, borer species, and beneficial organisms, in the stemborer ecosystem in the Amhara State of Ethiopia. These data are prerequisites for devising environmentally sound sets of stemborer management technologies. Thus, distribution of stemborers and natural enemies, the effect of different levels of fertilization on stemborers and associated yield loss (by exclusion and inclusion of borers …

Varroa Destructor Virus 1: A New Picorna-Like Virus In Varroa Mites As Well As Honey Bees, Juliette R. Ongus
All PhD Dissertations
Honey bees are important insects that have benefited mankind for medicinal and nutritional purposes for thousands of years. They have also provided an important balance in the environment allowing many plant species to pollinate and proliferate. Honey bees have naturally occurring parasites and pathogens which usually do not destroy the bees. The development of long-distance travel among human beings introduced global trade in plants and animals introducing new species and diseases to regions where they did not exist previously. New diseases were introduced into bees and affected them severely. Among the most serious diseases are those caused by viruses and …

Fisheries Research Report No 154 - The Development Of A Rigorous Sampling Methodology For A Long-Term Annual Index Of Recruitment For Finfish Species From South-Western Australia., Daniel J. Gaughan, Suzanne G. Ayvazian, G Nowara, M Craine
Fisheries Research Reports
Final FRDC Report - 1999/153.
This study has determined the optimal strategies to achieve statistically robust indices of recruitment of five key finfish species in south-western Australia. For another two species such indices could not be established. The sampling strategies developed will initially focus on the most appropriate location, month, and lunar phase, after which fine tuning of the sampling activity will be undertaken with respect to time of day, tide height, weather conditions etc. A significant outcome from the project is that five finfish species have a sampling strategy for recruits that can be utilized as a monitoring program …
Role Of Wild Host Plants In Population Dynamics Of Cereal Stemborers And The Associated Parasitoids In Uganda, Teddy Matama Kauma
Role Of Wild Host Plants In Population Dynamics Of Cereal Stemborers And The Associated Parasitoids In Uganda, Teddy Matama Kauma
All PhD Dissertations
Lepidopteran stemborers attack several graminaceous and wild host plants. These pests are one of the major constraints to maize production in Africa. However, efforts to control stemborers have aimed at cereal crops and the role of alternative wild hosts has been neglected. Recent reports have indicated that the abundance of wild grass in the maize field surroundings is correlated with lower stemborer incidence. This study was conducted with the aim of elucidating the role of wild grasses in stemborer infestations in maize in Uganda. To achieve this goal, surveys, field and screen house trials were conducted between 2003 and 2005. …

Family Functioning And Coping Behaviors In Parents Of Children With Autism, Matthew J. Altiere
Family Functioning And Coping Behaviors In Parents Of Children With Autism, Matthew J. Altiere
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
We looked at how a child with autism affects the dynamics and coping behaviors of a family. A majority of studies on families with a child with autism collect information from the mother but not the father. Therefore, this study examined the involvement of both parents from a family systems theory approach, which compares relationships among different familial variables, to determine the contributions of each individual to the developmental outcomes of the family unit. It was hypothesized that moderate levels of cohesion and adaptability would be associated with higher levels of positive coping mechanisms. Further, the more coping strategies implemented …

The Effect Of Prey Availability On Metabolism And Activity In The Tarantula Phormictopus Cancerides (Araneae: Theraphosidae), Benjamin Nathan Philip
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This study examined the effect of different periods of food deprivation on resting metabolic rates (RMR) and foraging activities in tarantulas (Phormictopus cancerides). Juvenile tarantulas were separated into two feeding groups and fed once either every 5 or 30 days. Monthly feeding trials were preceded by RMR measurements. During feeding trials I compared differences between the two groups in (1) prey capture rates, (2) time to prey capture, (3) locomotory activity, and (4) the predator’s prey detection distance. RMRs increased for the well-fed group but remained consistent for individuals, fed only once a month. Time to prey capture …
Understanding Compulsive Buying: The Dimensions And Management Of Addictive Shopping, Andrew Richard Wilczaki
Understanding Compulsive Buying: The Dimensions And Management Of Addictive Shopping, Andrew Richard Wilczaki
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Drawing on messages collected from an internet support group, this paper examines the motivations and dimensions of compulsive shopping as an addictive disorder. Two thousand nonrandom internet messages were collected and subjected to content analyses, resulting in a final sample of 197 subjects. Factor analyses and logistical regression models found varying motivations for compulsive shopping that were not mutually exclusive: the need to escape and the need to fill a void. Subsequently, compulsive shoppers with these motivations were found to manage their shopping differently, specifically in terms of help-seeking behaviors and organizational behaviors.
Coping And Quality Of Life Of Adolescents With Idiopathic Scoliosis, Elizabeth Shannon Kuhl
Coping And Quality Of Life Of Adolescents With Idiopathic Scoliosis, Elizabeth Shannon Kuhl
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
How adolescents cope with the stress of bracing or spinal fusion surgery for idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) and how coping might impact quality of life (QOL) for this population is unknown. The primary aim of this study was thus to examine these relationships.
Forty-eight adolescents participated in this cross-sectional study and completed the SRS-22r, the PedsQL, and the A-COPE during regularly scheduled orthopedic appointments. Treatment groups did not differ significantly on either dimension of coping (approach or avoidant) or on either measure of quality of life. In addition, neither dimension of coping moderated QOL. However, higher use of avoidant …

No. 16: South African Immigration Law: A Gender Analysis, Belinda Dodson, Jonathan Crush
No. 16: South African Immigration Law: A Gender Analysis, Belinda Dodson, Jonathan Crush
Southern African Migration Programme
One of the last pieces of apartheid-era legislation to disappear from the South African statute books was the Aliens Control Act of 1991. Although amended in 1995, this Act was finally consigned to history only in March 2003, when the draft regulations implementing the new Immigration Act (no. 13 of 2002) came into effect (Republic of South Africa 2002 and 2003). While there is much in the new Act to be welcomed, and it certainly represents the advent of a more just and pragmatic immigration regime, many of its provisions give considerable cause for concern on gender grounds. The Act …
Characterization Of Vinyl Chloride Degrading Bacteria From A Serial Anaerobic-Aerobic Chloroethene Bioreactor, Fredrick Heath Damron
Characterization Of Vinyl Chloride Degrading Bacteria From A Serial Anaerobic-Aerobic Chloroethene Bioreactor, Fredrick Heath Damron
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
Chloroethenes are among the most common groundwater contaminants in the United States. In anoxic groundwater, chloroethenes can be reduced to vinyl chloride (VC), a known carcinogen. The goal of this research was to characterize bacteria that could mineralize VC from a microbial community within a serial aerobic-anaerobic chloroethene bioreactor. Isolations for organisms capable of VC degradation were performed. The ability to degrade VC was first indicated by accumulation of chloride. Gas chromatography assay showed that VC was degraded in cultures capable of chloride accumulation. The epoxyalkane:coenzyme M transferase (EaCoMT) gene which codes for an enzyme previously shown to function in …
The Biological Etiology Of Mental Health Disorders: Social Influences And Change Potential Of Practitioners’ Beliefs, Donna Marie Midkiff
The Biological Etiology Of Mental Health Disorders: Social Influences And Change Potential Of Practitioners’ Beliefs, Donna Marie Midkiff
Theses, Dissertations and Capstones
This study was designed to examine mental health professionals’ strength of belief in biological causation of several syndromes including ADHD, unipolar depression, anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia and whether a three-hour educational program will alter their thinking. Findings suggest that pre-training, mental health professionals’ reported strength of belief regarding the etiology of many mental health disorders tends toward the biologically based. Also, this study demonstrated that attendance at a three hour training program is able to reduce the expressed acceptance of biological causation of such disorders. The social influences of pharmaceutical direct to consumer advertising and medical guild dominance, as well …

Spring migrant species richness increased with increased landscape openness, and abundance decreased as woodlot area increased. In winter, Tufted Titmice were more likely to be present in smaller woodlots, whereas …
The Sexual Sinthome, Geneviève Morel, Roland K. Végső
The Sexual Sinthome, Geneviève Morel, Roland K. Végső
Department of English: Faculty Publications
Psychoanalysis possesses the means to think the difference of the sexes without relying on the phallus. Lacanian theory of the sinthome offers an alternative by articulating a new quadruplicity (R, S, I, and the sinthome), which allows us to think the relation between the sexes and the generations without necessarily referring to the Name-of-the-Father or the phallus as absolute norms. Thanks to this theory, we can avoid the moral and political prejudices that accompany the grand questions of society posed to us at the dawn of the 21st century: the treatment of “mental health,” the legislation of marriage, filiation, and …

Zoonotics and Wildlife Disease: Publications
The remarkable mammals known as “bats” and “flying foxes” (order Chiroptera [“hand wing”]) may be the most abundant, diverse, and geographically dispersed vertebrates (Table 1). Although a great deal is known about them, detailed information is needed to explain the astonishing variations of their anatomy, their lifestyles, their roles in ecosystems ecology, and their importance as reservoir hosts of viruses of proven or potential significance for human and veterinary health.
