Effects, Transfer, And Fate Of Rdx From Aged Soil In Plants And Worms, E.P.H. Best, K.N. Geter, H.E. Tatem, B.K. Lane

United States Army: Publications

The objectives of this study were to provide data that can be used to predict exposure-based effects of RDX in aged soil on multiple endpoint organisms representing two trophic levels. These data can be used for defining criteria or reference values for environmental management and conducting specific risk assessment. Dose–response experiments formed the basis for the evaluation of toxic effects and transfer of contaminants from soil into two trophic levels. Long-term exposure tests were conducted to evaluate chronic, sublethal, toxicity and transfer of aged soil-based explosives, with RDX as main contaminant. In these tests, plants were exposed for 55 days …

Psychotherapy For Schizophrenia In The Year 2030: Prognosis And Prognostication, William D. Spaulding, Ben C. Nolting Jan 2006

Psychotherapy For Schizophrenia In The Year 2030: Prognosis And Prognostication, William D. Spaulding, Ben C. Nolting

Department of Psychology: Faculty Publications

A number of psychotherapy techniques have been developed that, to varying degrees, have empirical support demonstrating favorable effects in the treatment of schizophrenia (or serious mental illness [SMI]). These techniques, and the research, vary with respect to theoretical origins, format, treatment targets, and expected outcome. A historical perspective informs understanding of this proliferation. One landmark in psychotherapy research was the recognition of common factors: different therapies embody common therapeutic factors not central to any one school. Importantly, insights about common factors reflected a better theoretical understanding of the psychotherapy process and led to the translation of learning and conditioning theories …

Synthesis Of Polymer-Bound 4-Acetoxy-3-Phenylbenzaldehyde Derivatives:  Applications In Solid-Phase Organic Synthesis, Anil Kumar, Guofeng Ye, Yousef Ahmadibeni, Keykavous Parang

Biomedical and Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Aminomethyl polystyrene resin was reacted with 4-(5‘-formyl-2‘-hydroxyphenyl)benzoic acid and 4-(5‘-formyl-2‘-hydroxyphenyl)phenyl propionic acid, respectively, in the presence of 1-hydroxybenzotriazole and 1,3-diisopropylcarbodiimide to yield polymer-bound benzaldehydes. The phenolic group in resins was acetylated with acetic anhydride to afford two polymer-bound 4-acetoxybenzaldehydes. The reductive amination of polymer-bound linkers by amines and sodium triacetoxyborohydride, followed by sulfonylation with arylsulfonyl chloride derivatives in the presence of pyridine and the cleavage with TFA/DCM/H2O, produced pure sulfonamides.

Homeland Security: Engaging The Frontlines - Symposium Proceedings, George Baker, Cheryl Elliot

Selected Works

The rise of the American homeland security endeavor under the leadership of the new Department of Homeland Security has been heralded by several major national strategy documents. These documents have served to organize efforts at top levels within the government and industry. However, the national strategy guidance is not getting to many organizations and people at the grass-roots level who can make the most difference in preventing attacks, protecting systems, and recovering from catastrophic events, viz. the general citizenry, private infrastructure owners, and local governments. To better understand grass-roots issues and solutions, James Madison University, in cooperation with the Federal …

A Pedagogy Of Service : Developing Spiritual Human Resources Through Praxis In The Ruhi Institute Curriculum, Jeffrey Clark

Capstone Collection

The Crimson Ark Regional Training Institute (RTI), an agency providing training for Bahá'í communities in the Mid-Atlantic area, utilizes a curriculum designed by the Ruhi Institute in Puerto Tejada, Colombia, for developing the knowledge, skills and awareness needed for spiritual community development. Whereas each course has both theoretical and practical components, it has been especially challenging to encourage participants to carry out the community building practices associated with the curriculum text. This paper seeks to address this issue from the perspective of those who lead the trainings, exploring how we can better facilitate the training process, to ensure that the …

Effect Of Pyridostigmine On Heart Rate Recovery After Exercise In Trained Athletes And Sedentary Adults, Thomas Andrew Dewland

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Acetylcholinesterase inhibition with pyridostigmine has been previously studied in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF), but the effects of this medication on heart rate recovery after exercise and other indices of parasympathetic activity in populations with greater baseline vagal tone has not been fully characterized. Ten healthy, sedentary adults and ten aerobically trained athletes were enrolled in a prospective, double blind, randomized placebo controlled crossover trial. All study subjects were treated with a single dose of oral pyridostigmine 30 mg and matching placebo on separate days. Heart rate variability (HRV) at rest and heart rate recovery (HRR) at one minute …

Post-Operative Concurrent Chemoradiation With Mitomycin-C For Advanced Head And Neck Cancer, Amar Rewari

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Purpose: Recent prospective randomized trials have shown concurrent chemo-radiation improves local-regional control in post-operative patients with squamous cell carcinomas of the head and neck (SCCHN) using cis-platinum based regimens. This report pools data from three randomized trials performed at Yale that employed mitomycin-C (MC), selecting those patients treated postoperatively, to evaluate the long term benefit of MC in the postoperative setting and to compare these results with other recently published randomized trials. Methods and Materials: Between 1980 and 1999, a total of 331 SCCHN patients from the three prospective trials were enrolled. Of those patients, 205 were post-operative of which …

Environmental Justice And The Role Of Social Capital In An Underserved Urban Community, Lorraine Ann Dillon Jan 2006

Environmental Justice And The Role Of Social Capital In An Underserved Urban Community, Lorraine Ann Dillon

Community & Environmental Health Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this qualitative study was to evaluate a community's beliefs, attitudes, and experiences regarding their neighborhood's environmental health issues and the ways in which individuals utilize social capital (the degree to which a community collaborates and cooperates) to improve their environmental health. Research correlating social capital with health status shows that the higher the level of social capital in a community, the better the health. An understanding of why some groups exhibit more social capital than others is important in improving the public health system. The study was accomplished by comparing a convenience sample of two specific groups …

The distribution of VOC concentrations did not correlate with distance from the freeway. …

Learning And Cemory In The Cav1.2 Knockout Mouse, Jessica Ann White Jan 2006

Learning And Cemory In The Cav1.2 Knockout Mouse, Jessica Ann White

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Of the many signaling pathways found within neurons, calcium signaling is perhaps the most ubiquitous and versatile. Calcium influx through L-type voltage-gated calcium channels (L-VGCCs) is involved in numerous aspects of neuronal function: activation and regulation of gene transcription, synaptic plasticity, and regulation of neuronal excitability are all modulated by calcium. Because many calcium-related subcellular functions are implicated in the formation and storage of long-term memory, this writer investigated the role of an L-VGCC, CaV1.2, in hippocampus-dependent learning and memory. Utilizing the Cre/loxP gene-targeting system, the CaV1.2 L-VGCC isoform was conditionally deleted in the forebrain of mice. This extensive deletion …

Application Of The ³H-Leucine Incorporation Technique For Quantifying Rates Of Bacterial Secondary Production Associated With Decaying Wetland Plant Litter, Jane E. Gillies

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The 3H-leucine incorporation technique for quantifying rates of bacterial production has increased in popularity since its original description for bacterioplankton communities. Previous studies examining 3H-leucine-incorporation conditions for bacterial communities in other habitats have reported a wide range of final leucine concentrations to achieve saturation-level uptake. This study assessed the application of the 3H-leucine-incorporation procedure for measuring bacterial production associated with decaying wetland plant litter. Substrate saturation experiments were conducted on three dates for bacteria colonizing decaying litter of Typha angustifolia, Schoenoplectus validus, and Phragmites australis. Incorporation of 3H-leucine into protein exhibited a biphasic saturation …

Boffin's Books And Darwin's Finches: Victorian Cultures Of Collecting, Michael W. Hancock Jan 2006

Boffin's Books And Darwin's Finches: Victorian Cultures Of Collecting, Michael W. Hancock

Faculty Publications & Research

Although wealthy continental virtuosos had passionately and selectively accumulated a variety of natural and artificial objects from the Renaissance onwards, not until the nineteenth century did collecting become a conspicuous national pastime among all classes in Britain. As industry and empire made available many new and exotic goods for acquisition and display, the collection as a cultural form offered the Victorians a popular strategy of self-fashioning that was often represented in the literature of the age as a source of prestige and social legitimation. Through interdisciplinary readings of Victorian fiction, narrative nonfiction, and poetry, my study examines how textual representations …

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Interpolation of geolocation or Argos tracking data is a necessity for habitat use analyses of marine vertebrates. In a fluid marine environment, characterized by curvilinear structures, linearly interpolated track data are not realistic. Based on these two facts, we interpolated tracking data from albatrosses, penguins, boobies, sea lions, fur seals and elephant seals using six mathematical algorithms. Given their popularity in mathematical computing, we chose Bézier, hermite and cubic splines, in addition to a commonly used linear algorithm to interpolate data. Performance of interpolation methods was compared with different temporal resolutions representative of the less-precise geolocation and the more-precise Argos …

A New Moustache Wasp In Dominican Amber, With An Account Of Apoid Wasp Evolution Emphasizing Crabroninae (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae), Daniel J. Bennett, Michael S. Engel Jan 2006

A New Moustache Wasp In Dominican Amber, With An Account Of Apoid Wasp Evolution Emphasizing Crabroninae (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae), Daniel J. Bennett, Michael S. Engel

Faculty Publications

A new, extinct species of the wasp genus Lindenius (Crabroninae: Crabronini: Crabronina) is described and figured from two exquisitely preserved specimens discovered in Early Miocene Dominican amber. Lindenius paleomystax, new species, represents the first record for the tribe Crabronini in Dominican amber and the southernmost record for the genus in the New World. The unique locality and habitat data begin to reveal a more complicated natural history for the genus than that suggested by Recent taxa alone. A checklist of fossil apoid wasps in amber is provided and the new species is discussed within the context of an overview …
