Biology Faculty Publications

The jawless fish, the sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus), spends part of its life as a burrow-dwelling, suspension-feeding larva (ammocoete) before undergoing a metamorphosis into a free swimming, parasitic juvenile that feeds on the blood of fishes. We predicted that animals in this juvenile, parasitic stage have a great capacity for catabolizing amino acids when large quantities of protein-rich blood are ingested. The sixfold to 20-fold greater ammonia excretion rates (JAmm) in postmetamorphic (nonfeeding) and parasitic lampreys compared with ammocoetes suggested that basal rates of amino acid catabolism increased following metamorphosis. This was likely due to a …

Biology Faculty Publications

Cuscuta spp. (dodders) are rootless, holoparasitic herbs with filiform stems attached to the host by numerous haustoria. In Canada, Cuscuta gronovii is the most common native species of the genus followed by Cuscuta campestris and C. umbrosa. Cuscuta epithymum and C. epilinum, both introduced species in Canada, occur occasionally. Infestation by Cuscuta spp. can result in serious yield losses and dodders are listed as noxious weeds in British Columbia, Ontario and Québec, and as restricted weeds in Alberta. These plants have evolved special adaptations to ensure their success: germination occurs late in the season when potential hosts are …

Death Under Control: The Portrayal Of Death In Mass Print English Language Magazines In Canada, Juanne Nancarrow Clarke

Sociology Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to discuss the portrayal of death in modern North American society in the highest circulating English language magazines available in Canada and published either in the United States or in Canada, in 1991, 1996, and 2001. The prevailing underlying frame/discourse of which there were a number of sub-variants, was the notion of the control of death. Stories focused on people taking control of death by 1) passive and active euthanasia, 2) suicide with political and social motivations and messages, 3) suicide deaths among celebrities and the families of celebrities, 4) dramatic murders, 5) issues …

Transsexuals And The Family Medical Leave Act, 24 J. Marshall J. Computer & Info. L. 315 (2006), Charles Thomas Little

UIC John Marshall Journal of Information Technology & Privacy Law

This article examines the implications for transsexuals seeking sexual reassignment surgery (“SRS”) under the Family Medical Leave Act (“FMLA”). Currently, the scant case law pertaining to the FMLA suggests that the statutes and regulations will likely fail to provide even minimal protection to transsexuals. If applied literally, the FMLA may present barriers to transsexuals seeking SRS in opposition to the true purpose behind the Act, which is to allow employees the opportunity to take reasonable leave from work by mandating more medical leave than the employers might otherwise be willing to grant for things such as the adoption or birth …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

We have previously identified a family of novel androgen receptor (AR) ligands that, upon binding, enable AR to adopt structures distinct from that observed in the presence of canonical agonists. In this report, we describe the use of these compounds to establish a relationship between AR structure and biological activity with a view to defining a rational approach with which to identify useful selective AR modulators. To this end, we used combinatorial peptide phage display coupled with molecular dynamic structure analysis to identify the surfaces on AR that are exposed specifically in the presence of selected AR ligands. Subsequently, we …

Conscience Clauses And Oral Contraceptives: Conscientious Objection Or Calculated Obstruction?, Mary K. Collins Jan 2006

Conscience Clauses And Oral Contraceptives: Conscientious Objection Or Calculated Obstruction?, Mary K. Collins

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

This article examines the ethical and legal implications of conscience clauses, which allow pharmacists to refuse to fill prescriptions for oral contraceptives due to their belief that they may constitute abortifacients. The author provides an informative background on contraception and the history of how abortion has been viewed in this country, then takes a critical look at some of the conscience laws already in existence, using a bioethical framework to examine them. She concludes by providing suggestions to reduce the negative ethical implications resulting from the enactment of conscience clauses.

The States "Race" With The Federal Government For Stem Cell Research, Joanna K. Sax

Annals of Health Law and Life Sciences

This article presents an innovative study of the effect of individual states and private institutes in pushing forward stem cell research despite a federal ban on creating new stem cell lines. The author analyzes the impact of state legislation, proposing that states are reacting to federal policy by serving as laboratories for what is traditionally federally funded biomedical research.

Federal Policy Responses To The 9/11 Attacks: An Assessment Of The Policy Making Process Since September 11, 2001, Ian J. Harlow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Directly following the September 11, 2001 attacks, the United States government initiated a self study to determine how it could better prevent, prepare for, and respond to terrorist attacks within its boarders. After only a short time, the public policy response began to occur. The main question that this research attempted to address was if the United States government's public policy response, through public laws, was adequate and appropriate to address the threat of a terrorist attack on the United States involving nuclear weapons.

The research first addressed and categorized the types of threats that involved nuclear terrorism and its …

Pseudomonas Aeruginosa 1244 Pilin Glycosylation: Substrate Specificity, Glycan Functionality, And Application For Vaccine Development, Joseph Horzempa Jan 2006

Pseudomonas Aeruginosa 1244 Pilin Glycosylation: Substrate Specificity, Glycan Functionality, And Application For Vaccine Development, Joseph Horzempa

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Pseudomonas aeruginosa expresses type IV pili, which are polymeric fibrous surface appendages extending from the poles of the cell that function in adhesion and surface motility. The monomeric pilus subunit, pilin, of P. aeruginosa 1244 is glycosylated with an oligosaccharide that is structurally identical to the O-antigen repeating unit of this organism. Work presented here identifies the pilin structures necessary for glycosylation. Results suggested that the C-terminal Ser of pilin is the major glycosylation recognition feature, and this residue cannot be substituted at its carboxyl group. While no other specific recognition features are present, the pilin surface must be compatible …

The Last Chapter In The Story: A Place For Aristotle's Eudaemonia In The Lives Of The Terminally Ill, Christopher Cowley Md Jan 2006

The Last Chapter In The Story: A Place For Aristotle's Eudaemonia In The Lives Of The Terminally Ill, Christopher Cowley Md

Journal of Health Ethics

The 'deficiency model' of aging has often been criticized for its lack of attention to the individual patient's narrative understanding of his own life. However, such narrative conceptions tend to focus on a generic adult person, situated in specific on-going projects and relationships, moving toward a more or less clear conception of the future. What interest me, on the other hand, are those individuals who have become aware of their own death as imminent, and who therefore strive to compose the 'last chapter' of their life story. Imminence is not to be taken in chronological or clinical terms, but as …

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

We use multiple photosynthetic, chlororespiratory, and plastid translation apparatus loci and their associated noncoding regions (ca. 16 kb per taxon, prior to alignment) to make strongly supported inferences of the deep internal branches of monocot phylogeny. Most monocot relationships are robust (an average of ca. 91 % bootstrap support per branch examined), including those poorly supported or unresolved in other studies. Our data strongly support a sister-group relationship between Asparagales and the commelinid monocots, the inclusion of the orchids in Asparagales, and the status of Petrosaviaceae as the sister group of all monocots except Acorus and Alismatales. The latter finding …

Vegatative Architecture Of Desiccation-Tolerant Arborescent Monocotyledons, Stefan Porembski Jan 2006

Vegatative Architecture Of Desiccation-Tolerant Arborescent Monocotyledons, Stefan Porembski

Aliso: A Journal of Systematic and Floristic Botany

Within the monocotyledons the acquisition of the tree habit is enhanced by either primary growth of the axis or a distinctive mode of secondary growth. However, a few arborescent monocotyledons deviate from this pattern in developing trunks up to four meters high that resemble those of tree ferns, i.e., their "woody-fibrous" stems consist mainly of persistent leaf bases and adventitious roots. This type of arborescent monocotyledon occurs in both tropical and temperate regions and is found within Boryaceae (Borya), Cyperaceae (Afrotrilepis, Bulbostylis, Coleochloa, Microdracoides), and Velloziaceae (e.g., Vellozia, Xerophyta). They have developed in geographically widely separated regions …

Electromechanical Imaging Of Biomaterials By Scanning Probe Microscopy, B. J. Rodriguez, Sergei V. Kalinin, J. Shin, Stephen Jesse, V. Grichko, T. Thundat, Arthur P. Baddorf, Alexei Gruverman

Alexei Gruverman Publications

The majority of calcified and connective tissues possess complex hierarchical structure spanning the length scales from nanometers to millimeters. Understanding the biological functionality of these materials requires reliable methods for structural imaging on the nanoscale. Here, we demonstrate an approach for electromechanical imaging of the structure of biological samples on the length scales from tens of microns to nanometers using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), which utilizes the intrinsic piezoelectricity of biopolymers such as proteins and polysaccharides as the basis for high-resolution imaging. Nanostructural imaging of a variety of protein-based materials, including tooth, antler, and cartilage, is demonstrated. Visualization of protein …

Alexei Gruverman Publications

Since the discovery in the late 18th century of electrically induced mechanical response in muscle tissue, coupling between electrical and mechanical phenomena has been shown to be a near-universal feature of biological systems. Here, we employ scanning probe microscopy (SPM) to measure the sub-Angstrom mechanical response of a biological system induced by an electric bias applied to a conductive SPM tip. Visualization of the spiral shape and orientation of protein fibrils with 5 nm spatial resolution in a human tooth and chitin molecular bundle orientation in a butterfly wing is demonstrated. In particular, the applicability of SPM-based techniques for the …

Interprofessional Collaboration Between Criminal Justice And Mental Health Practitioners Regarding Mentally Ill Offenders: Perception Of Collaboration, Christopher Sharp Jan 2006

Interprofessional Collaboration Between Criminal Justice And Mental Health Practitioners Regarding Mentally Ill Offenders: Perception Of Collaboration, Christopher Sharp

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The federal program of deinstitutionalizing psychiatric facilities has resulted in a well documented, ever-increasing mentally ill population in the nation's prisons and jails. Historically, the criminal justice system has maintained a laissez-faire attitude toward the mentally ill, and only became involved with the mentally ill when a crime had been committed. As such, the President's Mental Health and Criminal Justice Consensus Project was developed to explore ways that the two systems could work together to address the growing problem of the mentally ill offender. However, challenges arise because the criminal justice system has typically been viewed as a loosely coupled, …

Software-Based Gradient Nonlinearity Distortion Correction, Thomas Seward Lee Jan 2006

Software-Based Gradient Nonlinearity Distortion Correction, Thomas Seward Lee

Theses Digitization Project

The primary purpose of the thesis is to discuss the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in functional proton radiosurgery. The methods presented in this thesis were specifically designed to correct gradient nonlinearity distortion, the single greatest hurdle that limits the deployment of MRI-based functional proton radiosurgery systems. The new system central in the thesis fully utilized MRI to provide localization of anatomical targets with submillimeter accuracy. The thesis provides analysis and solutions to the problems related to gradient nonlinearity distortion. The characteristics of proton radiosurgery are introduced, in addition to a discussion of its advantages over other current methods …
