[1] A high-resolution stratigraphic image of a flume-generated deposit was scaled up to sedimentary basin dimensions where a natural log hydraulic conductivity (ln( K)) was assigned to each pixel on the basis of gray scale and conductivity end-members. The synthetic ln( K) map has mean, variance, and frequency distributions that are comparable to a natural alluvial fan deposit. A geostatistical analysis was conducted on selected regions of this map containing fluvial, fluvial/ floodplain, shoreline, turbidite, and deepwater sedimentary facies. Establishment Of Cecidochares Connexa (Diptera: Tephritidae) In Guam And Its Effect On The Growth Of Chromolaena Odorata (Asteraceae), Z. T. Cruz, R. Muniappan, G. V.P. Reddy

The gall fly Cecidochares connexa (Macquart) (Diptera: Tephritidae) was imported from Indone ia into Guam in 1998. It was field-established at one location in north central Guam, and its spatial and temporal spread in Guam was monitored. The biology of the gall fly is presented. No relationship between the number of larvae in a gall and the dimensions of the gall (length and width) existed. Three pupae per gall was the most frequent density with a range of 1-7. The sex ratio of flies emerging from galls was 1:1 irrespective of number of larvae per gall. C. connexa-induced galls established …

The Role Of Boron In The Regulation Of Inflammation: Studies In Vivo And In Vitro, Kelly Ann Durick

I demonstrated here that the presence of physiological amounts of boron was able to prevent the onset of and ameliorate ongoing collagen-induced arthritis (CIA). I also show a mechanism for boron's anti-inflammatory properties, in that boron was able to down regulate a number of pro-inflammatory mediators, all of which are under transcriptional control of NF-κB. Boron-supplemented diets, 2.0 mg B/kg and 12 mg B/kg, rendered CIA susceptible mice significantly more resistant to the onset of clinical arthritis, compared to mice fed boron-deficient chow, or commercial rodent chow. Dietary boron supplementation was also shown to prevent the onset of experimental autoimmune …

Laboratory -Induced Aggression Among Participants With And Without A History Of Alcohol -Related Aggression, Matthew D. Bailly

The effects of alcohol-related and mixed alcohol and non-alcohol-related histories of aggression on aggressive responding in the laboratory were investigated using the Point Subtraction Aggression Paradigm (PSAP). Forty-five male college students were selected for participation in the present study using a questionnaire consisting of modified items from the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory (BDHI; Buss & Durkee, 1957) and Overt Aggression Scale (OAS; Yudofsky et al., 1986) that allowed for assignment to an alcohol-related, mixed, or no history of aggression control condition. Social Anxiety And The Recognition Of Auditory And Visual Emotional Cues, Ryan D. Hartmann

Cognitive theory attributes social anxiety to a host of perceptual biases that transform harmless interpersonal stimuli into threats. Socially anxious college students were expected to misinterpret visual and auditory cues of emotion in others more readily than their more confident counterparts. This group of socially anxious men and women were also expected to perceive negative emotion from visual and auditory cues that were determined to be neutral or positive through an external validation process. Bacterial Persistence In Escherichia Coli: Examination Of The Role Of Hipba, Shaleen B. Korch

Persistence is the ability of a small fraction of bacteria (one-in-a-million) to survive antibiotic exposure, yet the survivors are as susceptible to antibiotic as the parental cells. "High persistence" in Escherichia coli is linked to mutations in hipA, the toxin entity of the toxin-antitoxin module hipBA. The wild type hipA gene encodes a "toxin" while hipB encodes a DNA-binding protein that autoregulates hip operon expression and binds to HipA to nullify its effects. The hipA7 allele confers persistence to 1:100 cells and serves as a model system to study persistence. Wild-type HipA, when in excess of HipB, causes culture growth …

Chronic portal hypertension is an end-state clinical condition associated with cirrhosis and other diseases that elevate portal vascular resistance. An intriguing vascular consequence of chronic portal hypertension is impaired vasoconstrictor function which favors a chronically vasodilated condition. This vasoconstrictor dysfunction has been linked to prolonged activation of protein kinase A (PKA). However the cellular mechanism(s) responsible for the altered vasoconstrictor function is still not clear. The present studies tested my hypothesis that PKA mediates impaired vasoconstrictor function by affecting the actin filament dynamics via two small heat shock proteins, HSP20 and HSP27.
