Remote Terrain Navigation For Unmanned Air Vehicles, Stephen R. Griffiths Jan 2006

Remote Terrain Navigation For Unmanned Air Vehicles, Stephen R. Griffiths

Theses and Dissertations

There are many applications for which small unmanned aerial vehicles (SUAVs) are well suited, including surveillance, reconnaissance, search and rescue, convoy support, and short-range low-altitude perimeter patrol missions. As technologies for microcontrollers and small sensors have improved, so have the capabilities of SUAVs. These improvements in SUAV performance increase the possibility for hazardous missions through mountainous and urban terrain in the successful completion of many of these missions. The focus of this research was on remote terrain navigation and the issues faced when dealing with limited onboard processing and limited payload and power capabilities. Additional challenges associated with canyon and …

An ecological community's species diversity tends to erode through time as a result of stochastic extinction, competitive exclusion, and unstable host-enemy dynamics. This erosion of diversity can be prevented over the short term if recruits are highly diverse as a result of preferential recruitment of rare species or, alternatively, if rare species survive preferentially, which increases diversity as the ages of the individuals increase. Here, we present census data from seven New and Old World tropical forest dynamics plots that all show the latter pattern. Within local areas, the trees that survived were as a group more diverse than those …

Soft-Shell Clam (Mya Arenaria) Distribution & Abundance At Selected Sites In The Great Bay Estuary, Raymond E. Grizzle, Jennifer K. Greene, Holly Abeels Jan 2006

Soft-Shell Clam (Mya Arenaria) Distribution & Abundance At Selected Sites In The Great Bay Estuary, Raymond E. Grizzle, Jennifer K. Greene, Holly Abeels

PREP Reports & Publications

Previous surveys (1996 to 2002) provided distribution and abundance data for soft-shell clam (Mya arenaria) populations in ten areas of the Great Bay and Piscataqua River estuaries identified as potentially good clam habitat. The present study was designed to complete the overall survey by sampling six remaining areas: Weeks Point, Brackett's Point, Squamscott River mouth, Moody Point, Herods Cove, and Upper Little Bay (western shore). The objectives of the present project were to: (1) visually inspect the six study areas for the general distribution of sediment types and soft-shell clams, (2) quantitatively sample the six areas to determine densities of …

The Vaccine Industry: Does It Need A Shot In The Arm?, Eileen Salinsky, Cole Werble Jan 2006

The Vaccine Industry: Does It Need A Shot In The Arm?, Eileen Salinsky, Cole Werble

National Health Policy Forum

This paper broadly examines the scientific, regulatory, and economic factors that contribute to constrained vaccine production capacity, periodic vaccine shortages, and perceptions of inadequate investment in new vaccine product development. It describes the vaccine development and production processes and summarizes how regulatory requirements influence these activities. Market dynamics related to vaccine supply and demand are also explored, including an examination of the industry’s cost structure, potential market size, and purchaser price sensitivity. A broad range of policy interventions designed to address shortcomings of the vaccine market are considered.
