Protecting Children By Preserving Parenthood, Jane C. Murphy
Protecting Children By Preserving Parenthood, Jane C. Murphy
All Faculty Scholarship
Establishing legal parentage, once a relatively straightforward matter of marriage and biology, has become increasingly complex. The determination of legal status as mother may now involve several women making claims based on genetic contribution, contract, status as gestational carrier or other bases. The debate about the best choice for children when adults are competing for parental status is ongoing, lively and filled with many voices. Less attention has been paid to a much larger, second category of cases - cases in which the law is faced with resolving the legal status of the one adult who may be available to …

Pepper (Capsicum annuum) serotonin N-hydroxycinnamoyltransferase (SHT) catalyzes the synthesis of N-hydroxycinnamic acid amides of serotonin, including feruloylserotonin and p-coumaroylserotonin. To elucidate the domain or the key amino acid that determines the amine substrate specificity, we isolated a tyramine N-hydroxycinnamoyltransferase (THT) gene from pepper. Purified recombinant THT protein catalyzed the synthesis of N-hydroxycinnamic acid amides of tyramine, including feruloyltyramine and p-coumaroyltyramine, but did not accept serotonin as a substrate. Both the SHT and THT mRNAs were found to be expressed constitutively in all pepper organs. Pepper SHT and THT, which have primary sequences that are 78% identical, were used as models …

Many taxa used in biological control may be composed of several population units reproductively isolated to various degrees. Yet, the introductions of non-compatible populations may result in a depression of intended biological control. Cotesia plutellae has been widely used as a biological control agent of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella. However, not all introductions and augmentations were successful. With the aim to develop markers of compatibility for this species, we studied the reproductive compatibility between five populations (South Africa, Benin, Martinique, Reunion, and Taiwan) and analyzed its statistical relationship with three morphological characters (antennae and body length and antennae/body ratio), …

Interspecific competition between Xanthopimpla stemmator and Dentichasmias busseolae was studied using pupae of the invasive crambid stemborer Chilo partellus as the host. While X. stemmator is an old association, D. busseolae formed a relatively new association with C. partellus in East Africa. Two different time intervals between parasitism (0 and 48 h) and two parasitoid sequences [i.e., X. stemmator before D. busseolae (Xs-Db) and D. busseolae before X. stemmator (Db-Xs)] were chosen. In addition, the parasitoids' performance on pupae in maize stems and ears was assessed. For both X. stemmator and D. busseolae, there was no difference in foraging time …
Homeostasis And Well Being, Malcolm Dowling, Chin Fang Yap
Homeostasis And Well Being, Malcolm Dowling, Chin Fang Yap
Research Collection School Of Economics
The paper suggests that maintenance of a homeostatic equilibrium provides a rationale for many actions of economic agents. Homeostatic equilibrium has physical, economic, emotional, psychological and environmental dimensions. The characteristics of this equilibrium include feelings of safety, trust, connectedness with friends, family and community, and a predictable and welcoming social and work environment. Individuals generally make decisions that help them move toward and achieve this state of equilibrium. Departure from homeostasis reduces well being and stimulates agents to take actions that will return them to a state of homeostasis. This hypothesis is tested with probit analysis using sample responses from …

Neuromechanics Of Coordination During Swallowing In Aplysia Californica, Hui Ye, Douglas W. Morton, Hillel J. Chiel

Bernstein (1967) hypothesized that preparation of the periphery was crucial for correct responses to motor output. To test this hypothesis in a behaving animal, we examined the roles of two identified motor neurons, B7 and B8, which contribute to feeding behavior in the marine mollusk Aplysia californica. Neuron B7 innervates a hinge muscle and has no overt behavioral effect during smaller-amplitude (type A) swallows, because the hinge muscle is too short to exert force. Neuron B8 activates a muscle (I4) that acts solely to grasp material during type A swallows. During larger-amplitude (type B) swallows, the behavioral actions of both …

The National Wildlife Refuge System Improvement Act of 1997 includes the nation’s broadest statutory commitment to ecosystem protection: to “ensure that the biological integrity, diversity, and environmental health of the system are maintained.” The act also directs the US Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) to expand the scope of conservation monitoring, assessment, and management beyond refuge boundaries to encompass surrounding landscapes. The act thus gives the FWS a leadership role in developing research and management partnerships with other agencies, organizations, and neighboring landowners. Increasing research capacity and scientific expertise, and strengthening institutional resolve to limit activities that impede the attainment …

Up-Regulation Of The Notch Ligand Delta-Like 4 Inhibits Vegf-Induced Endothelial Cell Function, Ck Williams, J-L Li, M Murga, Al Harris, G Tosato
School of Biomedical Sciences
Delta-like 4 (Dll4), a membrane-bound ligand for Notch1 and Notch4, is selectively expressed in the developing endothelium and in some tumor endothelium, and it is induced by vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF)-A and hypoxia. Gene targeting studies have shown that Dll4 is required for normal embryonic vascular remodeling, but the mechanisms underlying Dll4 regulatory functions are currently not defined. In this study, we generated primary human endothelial cells that overexpress Dll4 protein to study Dll4 function and mechanism of action. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells retrovirally transduced with Dll4 displayed reduced proliferative and migratory responses selectively to VEGF-A. Expression of …

Dynamic Simulations Of Particle Suspensions Subjected To An External Electric-Field, Xianjin Jiang
Dynamic Simulations Of Particle Suspensions Subjected To An External Electric-Field, Xianjin Jiang
Dissertations
A numerical method is performed to study the suspension of polarizable particles in nonconductive solvents subjected to external electric fields. Such particles experience both hydrodynamic and electrostatic interactions. The hydrodynamic force acting on the particles is determined using the Stokesian dynamics method under the assumption that the Reynolds number is much smaller than 1, while the electrostatic force is determined by differentiating the electrostatic energy of the suspension, which is computed from the induced particle dipoles. In addition, the multiple image method is used to compensate for the electrostatic force when two particles are close to each other. Because the …

Ligand-Based Design Of Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitors : Fuzzy Relational Clustering And 2-D And 3-D Qsar Modleing, Milind Misra
Dissertations
As the three-dimensional structure of the dopamine transporter (DAT) remains undiscovered, any attempt to model the binding of drug-like ligands to this protein must necessarily include strategies that use ligand information. For flexible ligands that bind to the DAT, the identification of the binding conformation becomes an important but challenging task. In the first part of this work, the selection of a few representative structures as putative binding conformations from a large collection of conformations of a flexible GBR 12909 analogue was demonstrated by cluster analysis. Novel structurebased features that can be easily generalized to other molecules were developed and …
The Effects Of Aging On Cardiac Mechanics, Samuel C. Lieber
The Effects Of Aging On Cardiac Mechanics, Samuel C. Lieber
Dissertations
It is well established that the aging heart exhibits left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction and changes in mechanical properties, which have been attributed to alterations in the extracellular matrix (ECM). The investigators tested the hypothesis that the mechanical properties of cardiac myocytes significantly change with aging thereby contributing to the LV diastolic dysfunction. Cellular mechanical properties were determined by indenting cells with an atomic force microscope (AFM). The indentation results were interpreted by modeling the AFM probe as a blunted cone and determining an apparent elastic modulus (B) with classical infinitesimal strain theory (CIST). A commercially available finite element software …
Design And Resource Management Of Reconfigurable Multiprocessors For Data-Parallel Applications, Xiaofang Wang
Design And Resource Management Of Reconfigurable Multiprocessors For Data-Parallel Applications, Xiaofang Wang
Dissertations
FPGA (Field-Programmable Gate Array)-based custom reconfigurable computing machines have established themselves as low-cost and low-risk alternatives to ASIC (Application-Specific Integrated Circuit) implementations and general-purpose microprocessors in accelerating a wide range of computation-intensive applications. Most often they are Application Specific Programmable Circuiits (ASPCs), which are developer programmable instead of user programmable. The major disadvantages of ASPCs are minimal programmability, and significant time and energy overheads caused by required hardware reconfiguration when the problem size outnumbers the available reconfigurable resources; these problems are expected to become more serious with increases in the FPGA chip size. On the other hand, dominant high-performance computing …
Study Of Organic Reactions In Pyridinium-Based Ionic Liquids, Ying Xiao
Study Of Organic Reactions In Pyridinium-Based Ionic Liquids, Ying Xiao
Dissertations
Recently, ionic liquids have attracted a lot of attention as novel materials for organic transformations. This is due to their unique properties, which make them suitable substitutes for organic solvents. Most of the available literature is focused on the application of imidazolium-based ionic liquids for organic reactions, while very limited information is available on the application of pyridinium-based ionic liquids.
In this study, two different ionic liquids, 1 -ethyl-pyridinium tetrafluoroborate ([EtPy]+[BF4]-) and 1 -ethyl-pyridinium trifluoroacetate ([EtPy]+[CF3COO]-) have been investigated. Compared to previous reports, the synthetic technique for preparation …
Phase Transitions Of Poly (L-Lactic Acid) In Bulk And In Solution, Jing Zhang
Phase Transitions Of Poly (L-Lactic Acid) In Bulk And In Solution, Jing Zhang
Dissertations
Poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) has been subject to intensive research in recent years because of its biodegradability. Applications of PLLA, such as porous tissue engineering scaffolds and excipients for controlled release, have been developed in the biomedical and pharmaceutical fields. The crystal structures and morphologies of this semicrystalline polyester are the underlying factors that determine the mechanical and degradation properties of PLLA.
A fundamental understanding of the development of crystal structures and morphologies during the phase transitions of PLLA in bulk and in solution is pursued in this dissertation. Synchrotron wide- and small-angle x-ray scattering (WAXS and SAXS) are adopted as …
Development Of Environmentally Benign Microencapsulation With Polymer Microspheres And Liposomes, Baohua Yue
Development Of Environmentally Benign Microencapsulation With Polymer Microspheres And Liposomes, Baohua Yue
Dissertations
Microencapsulation means applying a shell-like coating to encapsulate the contents of interest in a particle form with a size range of few micrometers or below. In this work, aqueous liposome systems and polymer based encapsulation of fine particles in supercritical CO2 were studied. Compared to many other microencapsulation methods, these two methodologies feature reduction/prevention of using organic solvents, making them particularly attractive as green technology.
For polymer microencapsulation, a novel in situ polymerization based process to encapsulate various types of fine particles, include drugs, fire retardant, inorganic nanoparticles, and carbon nanotubes, was developed. In the process, host particles, monomers …
Bioinformatics Framework For Genotyping Microarray Data Analysis, Kai Zhang
Bioinformatics Framework For Genotyping Microarray Data Analysis, Kai Zhang
Dissertations
Functional genomics is a flourishing science enabled by recent technological breakthroughs in high-throughput instrumentation and microarray data analysis. Genotyping microarrays establish the genotypes of DNA sequences containing single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), and can help biologists probe the functions of different genes and/or construct complex gene interaction networks. The enormous amount of data from these experiments makes it infeasible to perform manual processing to obtain accurate and reliable results in daily routines. Advanced algorithms as well as an integrated software toolkit are needed to help perform reliable and fast data analysis.
The author developed a MatlabTM based software package, called …

The Book Of Mormon And Automatic Writing, Robert A. Rees
The Book Of Mormon And Automatic Writing, Robert A. Rees
Journal of Book of Mormon Studies
Some critics of the Book of Mormon have suggested that Joseph Smith produced the book through a process known as “automatic writing,” a rapid flow of language claimed to be generated through paranormal means such as trance-like states or claimed communications with spirits. This paper presents an overview of some prominent claims of automatic writing and examines the historical and scientific evidence for the authenticity of at least some of these cases. After discussing the similarities between these works and the Book of Mormon, the paper outlines a number of features in the Book of Mormon that clearly differentiate it …

Doppler Ultrasound Technique Used To Determine The Blood Flow Viscosity In The Middle Cerebral Artery Of A Canine Animal Model, Raj P. Ganpath
Theses
The cerebral blood flow velocity in the middle cerebral artery of an canine animal model was measured using the Doppler Ultrasound technique. A transducer was designed with a 20 MHz piezoelectric crystal and used for the application. An in vitro calibration system was designed and machined for the purpose of testing and calibrating every transducer before using it in vivo. Preliminary tests included experiments on the in vitro system and measurement of blood flow velocity in the human wrist artery (metacarpal artery). The effect of using different transmission media (agarose and gelatin) was determined through the many in vitro and …
