Applications Of Slow And Fast Streak Recording Cameras, Andrew Davidhazy
Applications Of Slow And Fast Streak Recording Cameras, Andrew Davidhazy
Articles
This paper deals with two applications of streak photography in everyday industrial and biological research and development endeavors. In each instance, the simplicity and low cost with which the data could be reduced to useful information and the ease with which it could be communicated to other technical personnel was an important side benefit. In the first case, a laboratory built rotating drum streak camera with a 12" circumference, was used to study the performance of the new Olympus F-280 flash on an Olympus OM-4T camera. The strobing frequency, starting characteristics, duration under manual and camera control, flash relationship to …

Breaking Down The Wall: An Examination Of Mental Health Service Utilization In African American And Caucasian Parents, Idia O. Binitie
Breaking Down The Wall: An Examination Of Mental Health Service Utilization In African American And Caucasian Parents, Idia O. Binitie
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated the influence of parents' gender, race, and psychopathology on barriers and attitudes to mental health utilization for themselves and for their children. It was hypothesized that mothers and Caucasian¹ parents would have more positive attitudes and would perceive fewer barriers to mental health services than fathers and African American² parents. A total of 194 African American and Caucasian parents were recruited from the community to participate in this study. Parents completed measures on barriers and attitudes toward treatment for themselves and their children, utilization of mental health services for themselves and their children, and their own current …

Empirical Bayes Approach To Controlling Familywise Error: An Application To Hiv Resistance Data, Rhoderick N. Machekano, Alan E. Hubbard
Empirical Bayes Approach To Controlling Familywise Error: An Application To Hiv Resistance Data, Rhoderick N. Machekano, Alan E. Hubbard
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Statistical challenges arise in identifying meaningful patterns and structures from high dimensional genomic data sets. Relating HIV genotype (sequence of amino acids) to phenotypic resistance presents a typical problem. When the HIV virus is under antiretroviral drug pressure, unfavorable mutations of the target genes often lead to greatly increased resistance of the virus to drugs, including drugs the virus has not been exposed to. Identification of mutation combinations and their correlation to drug resistance is critical in guiding efficient prescription of HIV drugs. The identification of a subset of codons associated with drug resistance from a set of several hundreds …

Considerations On Deception Techniques Used In Political And Product Marketing, Carlo Kopp
Considerations On Deception Techniques Used In Political And Product Marketing, Carlo Kopp
Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference
This paper explores three deception techniques which are widely used in political and product marketing. These techniques are ‘deception by omission’, ‘deception by saturation’ and the use of ‘deception by spin’. These techniques are newly analysed in the framework of the four canonical strategies of Information Warfare and Shannon’s capacity and entropy theorems, and their respective strengths and weaknesses established. Specific strategies for the defeat of these deception techniques are discussed.

Physical And Chemical Predictors Of Diatom Dissolution In Freshwater And Saline Lake Sediments In North America And West Greenland, David B. Ryves, Richard W. Battarbee, Stephen Juggins, Sherilyn C. Fritz, N. John Anderson
Physical And Chemical Predictors Of Diatom Dissolution In Freshwater And Saline Lake Sediments In North America And West Greenland, David B. Ryves, Richard W. Battarbee, Stephen Juggins, Sherilyn C. Fritz, N. John Anderson
Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences: Faculty Publications
Diatom dissolution in surface sediment samples from two regional lake datasets in the Northern Great Plains (NGP; n = 64) and West Greenland (n = 40) is assessed using a morphological approach categorizing valves during routine diatom analysis. Two dissolution indices are derived to parameterize diatom dissolution, and, when compared between two analysts in a blind test, show good correspondence and are closely correlated to diatom fragmentation. We explore the relationships between hydrochemical and physical lake parameters (including meromixis) on dissolution within both lake regions using multivariate methods and modeled with logistic regression. Salinity is the sole significant predictor …

Dissecting Trait Heterogeneity: A Comparison Of Three Clustering Methods Applied To Genotypic Data, Tricia A. Thornton-Wells, Jason H. Moore, Jonathan L. Haines
Dissecting Trait Heterogeneity: A Comparison Of Three Clustering Methods Applied To Genotypic Data, Tricia A. Thornton-Wells, Jason H. Moore, Jonathan L. Haines
Dartmouth Scholarship
Background: Trait heterogeneity, which exists when a trait has been defined with insufficient specificity such that it is actually two or more distinct traits, has been implicated as a confounding factor in traditional statistical genetics of complex hu man disease. In the absence of de tailed phenotypic data collected consistently in combination with genetic data, unsupervised computational methodologies offer the potential for discovering underlying trait heteroge neity. The performance of three such methods – Bayesian Classification, Hyperg raph-Based Clustering, and Fuzzy k -Modes Clustering – appropriate for categorical data were comp ared. Also tested was the ability of these methods …

Information Terrorism: Networked Influence, W Hutchinson
Information Terrorism: Networked Influence, W Hutchinson
Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference
The advent of digital information technology heralded the concept of information warfare. This ‘preliminary’ stage in the 1990s really consisted of technology warfare where the networks, upon which combat relied, were seen as weapons to gain ‘information superiority’. This was the inception of the technological aspect of Information Warfare. The realisation of the effectiveness of electronic networks to optimize organisational communication was taken up by industry, the military and terrorist groups alike. As society quickly became more reliant on digital networks to run its critical functions, it became apparent that this infrastructure was vulnerable and needed protection (as well as …

Conceptual Modelling: Choosing A Critical Infrastructure Modelling Methodology, Graeme Pye, Matthew J. Warren
Australian Information Warfare and Security Conference
This paper reports on further research undertaken regarding systems modelling as applied to critical infrastructure systems and networks and builds upon the initial modelling research of Pye and Warren (2006a). We discuss system characteristics, inter-relationships, dynamics and modelling of similar systems and why modelling of a critical infrastructure is important. In overview we compare four modelling methods and techniques previously used to model similar systems and discuss their potential transference to model critical infrastructure systems, before selecting the most promising and suitable for modelling critical infrastructure systems for further research.

The Enthymeme’S Role In Modern Discourse, Ryan Meehan
The Enthymeme’S Role In Modern Discourse, Ryan Meehan
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In this paper, I wish to demonstrate how enthymemic argument pervades modern discourse. First, I will define the enthymeme in Aristotelian terms and compare its qualities to its sibling, the syllogism. Next, I will attempt to demonstrate how the enthymeme functions, paying close attention to its psychological effects as well as analyzing how the media helps promote enthymemic discourse. Finally, I will propose a way that composition instructors can harness the idea of the enthymeme to facilitate critical thinking in the classroom. The purpose of the paper is to provide evidence that a rebirth of this classical term is in …

Discovering The Boundaries: Federal Preemption Of Pharmaceutical Labeling Product Liability Actions, Mary J. Davis
Discovering The Boundaries: Federal Preemption Of Pharmaceutical Labeling Product Liability Actions, Mary J. Davis
ExpressO
Federally approved prescription drug labeling has not been considered conclusive on the reasonableness or adequacy of the label for assessing tort liability on the manufacturer because federal regulations in this field set a minimum standard rather than an optimal one. That fundamental statement of black-letter tort law is under attack. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has promulgated a regulation which revises the format for prescription drug labeling, and, in the process, has taken the position that the regulation displaces, or preempts, state products liability laws that seek to assess liability on the manufacturer for a label’s warning adequacy. In …

Spontaneous Intracranial Arterial Dissection In The Young: Diagnosis By Ct Angiography, William C. Robertson, Curtis A. Given
Spontaneous Intracranial Arterial Dissection In The Young: Diagnosis By Ct Angiography, William C. Robertson, Curtis A. Given
Neurology Faculty Publications
BACKGROUND: Spontaneous carotid artery dissections have been rarely reported in children. Diagnosis has traditionally been confirmed by catheter arteriography. More recently diagnosis has been made by magnetic resonance imaging and magnetic resonance angiography; however the sensitivity of these techniques has yet to be determined. The authors are unaware of reports of carotid dissection confirmed by dynamic computed tomography (computerized tomographic arteriography) in the young.
CASE PRESENTATION: We recently evaluated a fourteen year-old male following the development of transient neurologic symptoms. There was no antecedent illness or trauma. Dynamic computed tomography revealed an intracranial dissection involving the supraclinoid segment of the …

Simple Records Matching Method For Diagnostic And Clinical Datasets Of Patient’S Records, Salvo Reina, Vito M. Reina, Eugenio A. Debbia
COBRA Preprint Series
Several statistical packages, either commercials or open-source, provide many methods for multi-factorial and discriminant analysis; such a software is poorly used by physicians. Appropriate models and tests have to be used pending on the kind of experiment scheme, adequate distribution assumption are needed for variables and parameters and proper data validation have to be verified for historical records. These are but a few of many critical aspects for a robust and trustable data interpretation needed in the Evidence Based Medicine era. Clinicians always wish to be able to quickly interpreter diagnostic records to discriminate, or alternatively correlate, coherent groups of …

Investigation Of Cretaceous Molluscan Shell Material For Isotopic Integrity: Examples And Implications From The Baculites Compressus/Cuneatus Biozones (Campanian) Of The Western Interior Seaway, Ashley Da Silva
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Whether a global greenhouse interval is a distinct or distant future, it is important to understand the dynamics of a greenhouse system. During such intervals the oceans, in the absence of sizeable polar ice caps, flood the continental shelf. The stratification and circulation of these epicontinental seas are open to debate, because there are no Recent analogs. The carbon and oxygen stable isotope record of fossil molluscan shell from epicontinental seas has the potential to reveal their stratification and seasonal cycles. As a study sample, mollusks from the Baculites compressus and Baculites cuneatus biozones of the Western Interior Seaway of …
