To understand biotic responses to an Antarctic cooling trend diatom samples from glacial meltwater streams in the McMurdo Dry Valleys, the largest ice-free area in Antarctica. Diatoms are abundant in these streams, and 24 of 40 species have only been found in the Antarctic. The percentage of these Antarctic diatom species increased with decreasing annual stream flow and increasing harshness of the stream habitat. The species diversity of assemblages reached a maximum when the Antarctic species accounted for 40-60% of relative diatom abundance. Decreased solar radiation and air-temperatures reduce annual stream flow, raising the dominance of these Antarctic species to …

Audience Interpersonal Identification With The Television Series Friends As It Is Reflected In Avid Viewers Within The Twixter Life Stage, Renee Ruth Peckham Apr 2006

Audience Interpersonal Identification With The Television Series Friends As It Is Reflected In Avid Viewers Within The Twixter Life Stage, Renee Ruth Peckham

Masters Theses

Twixter is a term, popularized by Time magazine, to define what sociologists classify as individuals in their mid to late twenties who are finding themselves "betwixt and between" adolescence and adulthood (Grossman, 2005). Researchers Cote and Allahar (1996), Bennett (1994), and Buchmann (1989) have identified mass media as a key contributor to this new transitional life stage, specifically discussing the influential potential of television. As individuals identify with various televised content, fictional characters establish role models that individuals then emulate. The series Friends, in particular, portrayed this Twixter life stage. This thesis addresses Kelman's (1961) theory of identification as it …

Quantitative Studies Of Allosteric Effects By Biointeraction Chromatography: Analysis Of Protein Binding For Low Solubility Drugs, Jianzhong Chen, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

A new chromatographic method was developed for characterizing allosteric interactions between an immobilized binding agent and low solubility compounds. This approach was illustrated by using it to characterize the interactions between tamoxifen and warfarin during their binding to the protein human serum albumin (HSA), with β-cyclodextrin being employed as a solubilizing agent for these drugs. It was confirmed in this work through several experiments that warfarin had a single binding site on HSA with an association equilibrium constant of 2-5 × 105 M-1 (average, 3.9 × 105 M-1) at 37°C, in agreement with previous reports. …

Evolution Toward Neutrality: Evolution Disclaimers, Establishment Jurisprudence Confusions, And A Proposal Of Untainted Fruits Of A Poisonous Tree, Asma T. Uddin Apr 2006

Evolution Toward Neutrality: Evolution Disclaimers, Establishment Jurisprudence Confusions, And A Proposal Of Untainted Fruits Of A Poisonous Tree, Asma T. Uddin

ExpressO

This Article deals with the controversy surrounding the teaching of evolutionary theory in American public schools, with a specific focus on disclaimers read by teachers before they teach evolution. With the rise of religious fundamentalism and the correspondent change in the American socio-legal climate, questions of religion and interpretation of the Religion Clauses of the U.S. Constitution have become increasingly pertinent. In particular, the precise relationship between the Free Exercise and Establishment Clauses is of special importance with religious groups now more vocal in their articulation of their free exercise rights.

The current form of disclaimer either mentions specific religious …

Before The Inca: Prehistoric Dietary Transitions In The Argentine Cuyo, Nicole Shelnut Apr 2006

Before The Inca: Prehistoric Dietary Transitions In The Argentine Cuyo, Nicole Shelnut

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A dietary reconstruction was performed in order to understand changing prehistoric subsistence patterns in the Central Andean geographical area of the Argentine Cuyo that includes the provinces of San Juan and Mendoza. Archaeologically, the Cuyo is also known as a boundary between Andean agriculturalists and the foragers of Patagonia. One hypothesis being tested is whether this area was one of the last South American cultural groups to convert to maize cultivation, probably around 2000 BP. The process of stable isotope analysis is used to reconstruct the diets of individuals, as it reveals the relative proportions of C3 and C4 plants …

Animal Husbandry At Tell El Hesi (Israel): Results From Zooarchaeological And Isotopic Analysis, Shannon Marie Peck-Janssen

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Located in today’s southern Israel, Tell el Hesi provides archaeologists with important clues to political and social changes in the ancient Near East. Zooarchaeological and stable isotopic analyses were conducted to evaluate shifts in animal husbandry practices during changing socioeconomic and sociopolitical conditions in the southern Levant.

During the Early Bronze Age, Tell el Hesi thrived as an agricultural grain producing center for the southern Levant. The acropolis served as both a storage and redistribution center for the inhabitants of Tell el Hesi. Coinciding with the collapse of the southern Levant, Tell el Hesi was abandoned throughout the Middle Bronze …

Super Learning: An Application To Prediction Of Hiv-1 Drug Susceptibility, Sandra E. Sinisi, Maya L. Petersen, Mark J. Van Der Laan

U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Many statistical methods exist that can be used to learn a predictor based on observed data. Examples include decision trees, neural networks, support vector regression, least angle regression, Logic Regression, and the Deletion/Substitution/Addition algorithm. The optimal algorithm for prediction will vary depending on the underlying data-generating distribution. In this article, we introduce a "super learner," a prediction algorithm that applies any set of candidate learners and uses cross-validation to select among them. Theory shows that asymptotically the super learner performs essentially as well or better than any of the candidate learners. We briefly present the theory behind the super learner, …

A Subset Of Mer1p-Dependent Introns Requires Bud13p For Splicing Activation And Nuclear Retention, Marc Spingola, Frederick Scherrer Apr 2006

A Subset Of Mer1p-Dependent Introns Requires Bud13p For Splicing Activation And Nuclear Retention, Marc Spingola, Frederick Scherrer

Biology Department Faculty Works

In the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Mer1p is expressed only during meiosis, and its expression is linked to the splicing of at least three mRNAs: MER2, MER3, and AMA1. Previous evidence suggests that Mer1p activates splicing by directly recruiting snRNPs or stabilizing intermediate splicing complexes formed on pre-mRNA that contains an intronic Mer1p enhancer element. However, some splicing factors, especially accessory/non-snRNP factors, have critical roles in retaining unspliced pre-mRNAs in the nucleus. We tested if Mer1p may indirectly regulate splicing by preventing the export of pre-mRNAs to the cytoplasm and also demonstrated that a second subunit of the Retention and Splicing …

Two New Resorcinarenes: A Pyridine & Acetic Acid Ligand For Metal Coordination And A Deep-Cavity Nitroquinoxaline Resorcinarene, Samantha Sizemore Vernetti Apr 2006

Two New Resorcinarenes: A Pyridine & Acetic Acid Ligand For Metal Coordination And A Deep-Cavity Nitroquinoxaline Resorcinarene, Samantha Sizemore Vernetti

Theses and Dissertations

Functionalizing the upper rim of resorcinarene-based cavitands allows a variety of compounds to be synthesized from a single scaffold. Using the upper-rim moieties as ligands for a variety of transition metal ions further increases the versatility of this class of host compounds. A new resorcinarene-based molecule functionalized with four pyridine and acetic acid ligands has been successfully prepared to explore the properties of metal-assembled complexes. To synthesize this compound, tetra(bromomethyl)cavitand was reacted with N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-ethylacetate amine to give ethyl acetate pyridine resorcinarene. Hydrolysis of the ester gave acetic acid pyridine resorcinarene (APRes) in good yield. Complexes with Cu2+, Co2+, and Zn2+ …

Spatial Patterns And Response To Wave Exposure Of Shallow Water Algal Assemblages Across The Canarian Archipelago: A Multiscaled Approach, Fernando Tuya, Ricardo J. Haroun Apr 2006

Spatial Patterns And Response To Wave Exposure Of Shallow Water Algal Assemblages Across The Canarian Archipelago: A Multiscaled Approach, Fernando Tuya, Ricardo J. Haroun

School of Natural Sciences Publications

We conducted a mensurative survey to investigate spatial variability and the effect of wave exposure at a range of spatial scales including islands (100s of kilometres apart), locations within islands (10s of kilometres apart), and sites within locations (100s of meters apart), on the composition, abundance and distribution of shallow water algal assemblages across subtidal hard bottoms of the Canarian Archipelago (eastern Atlantic). A multi-scaled hierarchical sampling design provided the framework for quantifying the variation among samples due to each spatial scale and level of wave exposure. Haphazardly placed 50 x 50 cm quadrats were deployed in shallow rocky-reefs to …
