Technological Convergance For Access To Hardcopy And Softcopy Collections By Means Of The Unibibliweb Portal: The Experience Of Cruesp/Libraries Consortium., Adriana Cybele Ferrari, Luiz Atílio Vicentini, Margaret Alves Antunes

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

The Consortium CRUESP/Libraries formed by the three São Paulo State Universities Library System, USP, UNESP, and UNICAMP, seeks to offer specialized services and products to the academic community. With the expanding of the available information sources to the Universities, researchers need to visit various sites from diverse information providers, possessing different access interfaces. This demands time for the user to know these interfaces, which are not always user-friendly, and utilize the same search terms numerous times. With the technological advance it has become evident the possibility of the creation of a unified search interface, using the international communication protocols such …

Internalized Shame As A Moderating Variable For Inhibited Sexual Difficulties In Adult Women Resulting From Childhood Sexual Abuse, Kristine Robinson

Theses and Dissertations

An adult female sample of childhood sexual abuse survivors (N=467) were surveyed to determine whether internalized shame moderated the effects of sexual inhibited difficulties. Other variables such as severity, duration, and frequency of sexual abuse, as well as whether physical abuse was also part of their experience, were examined to determine their role in later sexual inhibition. It was predicted that there would be a significant positive relationship between 1) Scores on variables of physical abuse, severity of abuse, frequency of abuse, duration of abuse, identity of the perpetrator and scores on the variable of inhibited sexual difficulties; 2) Scores …

The 3c3r Model: A Conceptual Framework For Designing Problems In Pbl, Woei Hung May 2006

The 3c3r Model: A Conceptual Framework For Designing Problems In Pbl, Woei Hung

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

Well-designed problems are crucial for the success of problem-based learning (PBL). Previous discussions about designing problems for PBL have been rather general and inadequate in guiding educators and practitioners to design effective PBL problems. This paper introduces the 3C3R PBL problem design model as a conceptual framework for systematically designing optimal PBL problems. The 3C3R model comprises two classes of components: core components and processing components. Core components—including content, context, and connection—support content and conceptual learning, while processing components—consisting of researching, reasoning, and reflecting—concern students’ cognitive processes and problem-solving skills. This paper discusses the model in terms of its theoretical …

Chemistry Faculty Research & Creative Works

Equilibrium and nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation techniques were used to assess the influence of an applied microwave field on the dynamics of methylamine-methanol and methylamine-dimethylformamide (DMF) solutions bound within atactic polystyrene over a range of polymer densities from 35 to 96 wt % polymer. Atomistically detailed systems were studied, ranging from 3000 to 10 644 particles, using previously established potential models. Structural and dynamical properties were determined in the canonical (NVT) ensemble at 298 K. The simulated DMF self-diffusion coefficients in polystyrene solutions were compared with the zero-field experimental results established with pulsed-gradient spin-echo NMR spectrometry. A simulated external microwave …

A Study Of Carasaurus' (Dinosaura: Sauropodomorph) Torso And Its Biomechanical Implications, Jacqueline Mary Wood

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Physical examination of the articulations between the dorsal vertebrae and the dorsal ribs of the sauropod dinosaur Camarasaurus (Upper Cretaceous, Wyoming or whatever) shows that the dorsal vertebral column has a slight double curve and the torso is more narrow and volumetrically smaller than previously reconstructed. The shape of the dorsal vertebrae series was based upon the position of the zygopophyses and centrum spacing. The dorsal ribs were placed on the vertebrae based upon the position of tuberculum/diapophysis, capitulum/parapophysis, and the lateral edge of the rib head. Comparisons between the articulated torso of Camarasaurus and extant relatives allowed for the …

The Role Of Connexin36 In Dopamine D1/D2 Synergism And Its Breakdown In Transgenic Mice, Eileen Nolan May 2006

The Role Of Connexin36 In Dopamine D1/D2 Synergism And Its Breakdown In Transgenic Mice, Eileen Nolan

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Most behavioral, physiological and cellular effects of theneurotransmitter dopamine require concomitant activation of both D1 and D2 receptors, a phenomenon referred to as D1/D2 synergism. Since D1 and D2 receptors are located mostly on separate neurons, and since D1/D2 synergism occurs in the absence of action potentials, we have suggested that electrotonic coupling via gap junctions plays an important role in this phenomenon. A major constituent of gap junctions is connexin36 (Cx36), a protein that is abundant in neurons. The role Cx36 in D1/D2 synergism, as manifested behaviorally, was studied here in mice genetically engineered to express normal, reduced, or …

A Content-Based Image Retrieval System For Fish Taxonomy, Fei Teng May 2006

A Content-Based Image Retrieval System For Fish Taxonomy, Fei Teng

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

It is estimated that less than ten percent of the world's species have been discovered and described. The main reason for the slow pace of new species description is that the science of taxonomy, as traditionally practiced, can be very laborious: taxonomists have to manually gather and analyze data from large numbers of specimens and identify the smallest subset of external body characters that uniquely diagnoses the new species as distinct from all its known relatives. The pace of data gathering and analysis can be greatly increased by the information technology. In this paper, we propose a content-based image retrieval …

Thermodynamics Of Buried Water In Protein Cavities And Revised Algorithms For Introducing Polarizability To Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Lisa Renee Olano May 2006

Thermodynamics Of Buried Water In Protein Cavities And Revised Algorithms For Introducing Polarizability To Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Lisa Renee Olano

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Free energy calculations for the transfer of a water molecule from the pure liquid to an interior cavity site in a protein are presented. Three different protein cavities, in bovine pancreatic trypsin inhibitor (BPTI), the I106A mutant of lysozyme, and in the I76A mutant of barnase, represent very different environments for the water molecule, one which is polar, forming four water-protein hydrogen bonds, and two which are more hydrophobic, only forming one or two water-protein hydrogen bonds. The calculations give very different free energies for the different cavities, with only the polar BPTI cavity predicted to be hydrated. The corresponding …

Periodontists' Ability To Self-Assess Their Knowledge Of Periodontics, A. Margarita Saenz

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This study examined periodontists' ability to self-assess their knowledge of periodontics. Self-assessment was measured as the difference between actual knowledge and perceived knowledge of two topics of clinical practice of periodontics: periodontal disease therapy and dental implant therapy. Other variables included were learning needs, motivation to learn, and background characteristics (number of years since graduation from a periodontics training program, classification as Diplomate or non- Diplomate, number of years since achieving Diplomate status, classification as private practitioner, academician, or private practitioner with a part-time academic position, and number of credit hours spent in continuing education per year). A questionnaire was …

The Ecology Of The Endangered Dusky Gopher Frog (Rana Sevosa) And A Common Congener, The Southern Leopard Frog (Rana Sphenocephala), Nicole Thurgate May 2006

The Ecology Of The Endangered Dusky Gopher Frog (Rana Sevosa) And A Common Congener, The Southern Leopard Frog (Rana Sphenocephala), Nicole Thurgate

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

Many amphibian populations are rapidly disappearing throughout the world. An important issue for ecologists is why some amphibian species are more susceptible to decline than others. Here I present five experiments that compare the performance of an endangered (Rana sevosa) and a common (Rana sphenocephala) frog in changing habitats, to determine why these two species differ in their persistence. I include additional studies investigating the habitat requirements and behavior of R. sevosa. I found that habitat change in the form of canopy closure over breeding ponds negatively affects both species, making them smaller as tadpoles and at metamorphosis. The magnitude …

Designed To Deliver: Building A Digital Collection To Support Research., Ellen Derey Safley May 2006

Designed To Deliver: Building A Digital Collection To Support Research., Ellen Derey Safley

Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences

For a university created from a scientific research institute, the importance of its library was essential for providing faculty with current literature. Yet, scientific and technical resources are some of the most expensive materials acquired by libraries. The 1980s and early 1990s was a very lean financial period. By 1998, the combination of a fundamental change in budgeting for acquisitions, the advent of digital delivery of information, and the rise in consortial purchasing arrangements created a surprisingly robust library environment. Within a twelve year period, a library previously deemed woefully inadequate became an asset to scientists and engineers needing scholarly …

Distinct P53 Acetylation Cassettes Differentially Influence Gene-Expression Patterns And Cell Fate., Chad D Knights, Jason Catania, Simone Di Giovanni, Selen Muratoglu, Ricardo Perez, Amber Swartzbeck, Andrew A Quong, Xiaojing Zhang, Terry Beerman, Richard Pestell, Maria Laura Avantaggiati

Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers

The activity of the p53 gene product is regulated by a plethora of posttranslational modifications. An open question is whether such posttranslational changes act redundantly or dependently upon one another. We show that a functional interference between specific acetylated and phosphorylated residues of p53 influences cell fate. Acetylation of lysine 320 (K320) prevents phosphorylation of crucial serines in the NH(2)-terminal region of p53; only allows activation of genes containing high-affinity p53 binding sites, such as p21/WAF; and promotes cell survival after DNA damage. In contrast, acetylation of K373 leads to hyperphosphorylation of p53 NH(2)-terminal residues and enhances the interaction with …

The Efficacy Of Peer Review In Improving E.S.L. Students' Online Writing, Kathryn Fiddler Butcher May 2006

The Efficacy Of Peer Review In Improving E.S.L. Students' Online Writing, Kathryn Fiddler Butcher

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

This mixed method study investigated the development of E.S.L. writers' skills in revision when scaffolded by peer reviewers, with Lev Vygotsky's social-interactionist theory as the framework. Repeated-measures ANCOVA analyzed scores of four essay projects (first drafts and revisions) evaluated by blind holistic readings with a pretest score as covariant. Participants came from existing sections at a state university in the South in which the instruction was the same. The experimental group wrote revisions based on peer feedback; the control group received instructor feedback. Qualitative data came from semi-structured interviews with participants. Neither group showed significant improvement (at .05) in revising. …

Salamander Mating Behaviors And Their Consequences For Individuals And Populations, Dean Croshaw May 2006

Salamander Mating Behaviors And Their Consequences For Individuals And Populations, Dean Croshaw

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation, I report new information that is necessary for future mating system studies in a little studied species, the marbled salamander (Ambystoma opacum). I studied female mating behavior, sexual selection, and the consequences of polyandry for individual females and salamander populations. I also compared the performance of several statistical approaches for analyzing genetic mating system data. The first chapter summarizes the characteristics of several novel microsatellite DNA loci as well as cross-amplified loci for marbled salamanders and mole salamanders that may be used for future studies. In the second chapter, I report estimates of sire number for 13 …
