The extent to which collagen alignment occurs during dermal wound healing determines the severity of scar tissue formation. We have modelled this using a multiscale approach, in which extracellular materials, for example collagen and fibrin, are modelled as continua, while fibroblasts are considered as discrete units. Within this model framework, we have explored the effects that different parameters have on the alignment process, and we have used the model to investigate how manipulation of transforming growth factor-b levels can reduce scar tissue formation. We briefly review this body of work, then extend the modelling framework to investigate the role played …

The Mechanism Of Assembly Of The G-Protein Beta Gamma Subunit Dimer By Ck2 Phosphorylated Phosducin-Like Protein And The Chaperonin Containing Tcp-1, Christine M. Baker
Theses and Dissertations
Phosducin-like protein (PhLP) binds G-protein beta gamma subunits and is thought to assist in assembly of the G-protein beta gamma dimer. Phosphorylation of PhLP at serine residues 18-20 by the casein kinase 2 (CK2) appears to play an essential role in this process. PhLP has also been shown to interact with the chaperonin containing TCP-1 (CCT) atop its apical domain, not entering the substrate folding cavity. However, the physiological role of the PhLP-CCT interaction in G-protein beta gamma dimer formation remains unclear. This study addresses the mechanism of G-protein beta gamma assembly by exploring the specific roles of CCT and …

Active Learning In A Large Enrollment Introductory Biology Class: Problem Solving, Formative Feedback, And Teaching As Learning, Diane Flint Robison
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to take a case study approach to exploring student learning experiences in a large enrollment introductory biology class. Traditionally such classes are taught through the lecture method with limited instructor-student interaction and minimal student-centered learning (Lewis & Woodward, 1984; Wulff, Nyquist, & Abbott, 1987). Biology 120 taught at Brigham Young University winter semester 2006 by John Bell was chosen as the case for the study due to its large enrollment (263) and its innovative pedagogy. In the classroom, students applied their learning through a variety of student-centered activities including solving problems, discussing concepts with …

How Parents And Their Adolescent Children "Talk The Talk" In Religious Conversations, Jennifer Yorgason Thatcher
How Parents And Their Adolescent Children "Talk The Talk" In Religious Conversations, Jennifer Yorgason Thatcher
Theses and Dissertations
This study builds on previous research regarding parent-child religious conversations to explore the elements and bidirectional processes of parent-adolescent religious conversations. It employs qualitative analyses of interviews with highly religious parents and adolescents representing the major Abrahamic faiths (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) from New England and Northern California. Variations in content, structure, conversational processes, and bidirectional influence are summarized in a conceptual model. Findings suggest that the quality of conversations is greater for parents and adolescents when they are youth-centered than when they are parent-centered.

Hydrodynamic Loading Of Microcantilevers Vibrating In Viscous Fluids, Sudipta Basak, Arvind Raman, S V. Garimella
Hydrodynamic Loading Of Microcantilevers Vibrating In Viscous Fluids, Sudipta Basak, Arvind Raman, S V. Garimella
CTRC Research Publications
The hydrodynamic loading of elastic microcantilevers vibrating in viscous fluids is analyzed computationally using a three-dimensional, finite element fluid-structure interaction model. The quality factors and added mass coefficients of several modes are computed accurately from the transient oscillations of the microcantilever in the fluid. The effects of microcantilever geometry, operation in higher bending modes, and orientation and proximity to a surface are analyzed in detail. The results indicate that in an infinite medium, microcantilever damping arises from localized fluid shear near the edges of the microcantilever. Closer to the surface, however, the damping arises due to a combination of squeeze …

Facts: The second respondent (Amir) was convicted of the murder of the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and was sentenced to life imprisonment. While in prison, he married the third respondent. When the first respondent refused, on security grounds, to allow Amir conjugal visits with his wife, Amir applied to the first respondent to be allowed to provide his wife with a sperm sample for the purposes of artificial insemination. The first respondent granted his request.
The petitioners, two members of the Knesset, consequently filed the petition, arguing that the first respondent did not have any authority in statute to …

Use Of Box-Pcr Subtyping Of Escherichia Coli And Enterococcus Spp. To Determine The Source Of Microbial Contamination At A Florida Beach, Miriam J. Brownell
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Siesta Key Beach, located on the Gulf Coast of Florida, is frequently mentioned among the top ten beaches in the US. In summer 2004, high levels of indicator bacteria caused health warnings to be posted, and a storm drainage system was implicated as a possible source of microbial contamination. A study was initiated to determine whether indicator bacteria that persisted in the stormwater system could contribute to high microbial loads in receiving waters. Two sampling events, one within 48 hours of a rain event and the other during dry conditions, were conducted. Water and sediment samples were taken at various …

Till Death Do Us Part: Marriage, Hiv/Aids And The Law In Zimbabwe, Slyvia Chirawu
ExpressO
Lying in Sub Saharan Africa, the epicenter of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Zimbabwe has grappled since 1985 to prevent and mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS. Statistics point out to one glaring factor- the disproportionate impact of HIV/AIDS on women and in the case of Zimbabwe married women. Laws, policies and practices in relation to marriage predispose married women to HIV/AIDS infection. The answer to protecting women does not lie entirely in the law but in transformative gender equality.
Zimbabwe has two types of recognized marriages and the third type , the unregistered customary law union is given limited recognition. The thread …

Depression, Sensation Seeking, And Maternal Smoking As Predictors Of Adolescent Cigarette Smoking, Judy Van De Venne, Kay Bradford, Catherine A. Martin, Megan Cox, Hatim A. Omar
Family Sciences Faculty Publications
The purpose of this study was to examine maternal and adolescent depression, maternal and teen sensation seeking, and maternal smoking, and their associations with adolescent smoking. Data were collected from a sample of 47 male and 66 female adolescents (ages 11-18 years) and their mothers from three different health clinics. The findings indicated that maternal sensation seeking was linked indirectly with adolescent smoking through teen sensation seeking, both of which were significantly associated with teen smoking (β = 0.29, p < 0.001 and β = 0.32, p < 0.001, respectively). Teen depression was associated positively with teen smoking (β = 0.24, p < 0.01) when controlling for sensation seeking behaviors. Maternal smoking was also directly linked to adolescent smoking (β = 0.20, p < 0.05). These findings underscore a potentially important role of sensation seeking in the origins of adolescent smoking, and clarify pathways of influence with regard to maternal attitudes and behaviors in subsequent teenage nicotine use.

Ligand-Induced Conformational Changes Of Extracellular Loop Two In The Dopamine Transporter, Jon D. Gaffaney
Ligand-Induced Conformational Changes Of Extracellular Loop Two In The Dopamine Transporter, Jon D. Gaffaney
Theses and Dissertations
The dopamine transporter (DAT) is a transmembrane spanning protein responsible for the clearance of dopamine from the dopaminergic synapse. Uptake blockers such as cocaine inhibit transport resulting in elevated levels of dopamine in the synapse. DAT is predicted to contain twelve transmembrane spanning domains (TMs) connected by alternating intra- and extracellular loops, however, the spatial arrangement of these regions is unknown. Extracellular loop 2 (EL2) is composed of approximately 80 amino acids and connects TM3 and TM4, two regions associated with uptake blocker binding. Using limited proteolysis we analyzed the aqueous accessibility of EL2 in the presence or absence of …
The Relationship Of Social Capital To High -Risk Behavior Engagement By High School Students, Erin M. Curran
The Relationship Of Social Capital To High -Risk Behavior Engagement By High School Students, Erin M. Curran
Theses and Dissertations
Social capital theory suggests that there are assets inherent in social relations that may be used to facilitate enhanced social, cultural, economic, and education outcomes for individuals and groups. More specifically, this theory can be extended to include those relational investments in youth that may serve to enhance their developmental, social, and educational outcomes. Proponents of social capital theory have asserted that youth with increased access to social capital may be less likely to exhibit social and behavioral difficulties. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between social capital and engagement in high-risk behaviors (including substance use, …
The Characterization And Distribution Of Renshaw Cells In The Rat Spinal Cord, Richard A. Zaruba
The Characterization And Distribution Of Renshaw Cells In The Rat Spinal Cord, Richard A. Zaruba
Theses and Dissertations
There is an abundance of electrophysiological and pharmacological data describing Renshaw cells (RC), however comparatively little is known about their distribution, metabolism, ionic regulation, modulation or exact role in motor behaviors. In this dissertation enzyme histochemistry and immunohistochemistry in conjunction with light, fluorescent and confocal microscopic methodologies were used to address the hypothesis that "the distribution of RC is contingent on their functional role in specific α motoneuronal pools and their unique electrophysiological and functional characteristics are reflected by their neurochemistry and synaptic inputs." The highest concentration of RC (number of RC per mm2) was found in the thoracic region …

Prevalence Of Shiga Toxin–Producing Escherichia Coli And Salmonella Enterica In Rock Pigeons Captured In Fort Collins, Colorado, Kerri Pedersen, Larry Clark, William F. Andelt, M.D. Salman
United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
The potential role of rock pigeons (Columba livia) in the epidemiology of shiga toxin– producing Escherichia coli (STEC) and Salmonella enterica is unclear. Our objective was to determine the prevalence of STEC and S. enterica in pigeons at urban and dairy settings as a function of season. Prevalence of STEC and S. enterica was estimated by bacteriologic culture of cloacal swabs collected from pigeons trapped at urban and dairy locations in and around Fort Collins, Colorado from January to November 2003. Presumptive E. coli isolates were tested for the presence of virulence genes SLT-1, SLT-2, eae, hlyA …

Vertical Migration Of The Toxic Dinoflagellate Karenia Brevis And The Impact On Ocean Optical Properties, Oscar Schofield, John Kerfoot, Kevin Mahoney, Mark A. Moline, Matthew Oliver, Steven Lohrenz, Gary Kirkpatrick
Biological Sciences
Vertical migration behavior is found in many harmful algal blooms; however, the corresponding impact on ocean optical properties has not been quantified. A near-monospecific population of the dinoflagellate Karenia brevis was encountered off the west coast of Florida. The community was tracked for 24 hours by following a Lagrangian drifter deployed at the beginning of the experiment. A suite of inherent optical and cellular measurements was made. Over the 24 hour period, the K. brevis population increased during the day with concentrations peaking in the late afternoon (1600 local daylight time) in the upper 2 m of the water column. …
