Nested Deletion Analysis Of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus Hc-Pro: Mapping Of Domains Affecting Polyprotein Processing And Eriophyid Mite Transmission, Drake C. Stenger, Gary L. Hein, Roy C. French Jun 2006

Nested Deletion Analysis Of Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus Hc-Pro: Mapping Of Domains Affecting Polyprotein Processing And Eriophyid Mite Transmission, Drake C. Stenger, Gary L. Hein, Roy C. French

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

A series of in-frame and nested deletion mutations which progressively removed 5′-proximal sequences of the Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV) HC-Pro coding region (1152 nucleotides) was constructed and evaluated for pathogenicity to wheat. WSMV HC-Pro mutants with 5′- proximal deletions of 12 to 720 nucleotides systemically infected wheat. Boundary sequences flanking the deletions were stable and unaltered by passage through plants for all deletion mutants except HCD12 (lacking HC-Pro codons 3–6) that exhibited strong bias for G to A substitution at nucleotide 1190 in HC-Pro codon 2 (aspartic acid to asparagine). HC-Pro mutants with 5′-proximal deletions of up to 720 …

Superficial Self-Harm Behavior: Helping Young Women Who Hurt Themselves, Katherine D. Ryan Jun 2006

Superficial Self-Harm Behavior: Helping Young Women Who Hurt Themselves, Katherine D. Ryan

Theses and Dissertations

Roughly 1 to 4% of the population engages in self-harm. Superficial self-harm is reported by more young women, than young men. Appropriate responses from family, friends, and other important individuals are a key ingredient in facilitating recovery. Non-therapists, such as family, friends, and school personnel often wish to assist young women who self-harm, but the problem is complex and they are often unsure of how to respond. Current studies primarily focus on the clinical interventions for self-harm, while very few have investigated the perspectives of the individuals who self-harm. This study investigated the perspectives of young women who self-harm in …

The Effect Of Male Competition On Female Choice In Brandt’S Vole, Lasiopodomys Brandti, Jianjun Zhang, Dazhao Shi, Lixing Sun Jun 2006

The Effect Of Male Competition On Female Choice In Brandt’S Vole, Lasiopodomys Brandti, Jianjun Zhang, Dazhao Shi, Lixing Sun

All Faculty Scholarship for the College of the Sciences

The effect of male competition on female choice in the Brandt’s vole (Lasiopodomys brandti) was studied in the laboratory. Using a two-way choice test, we showed that when males did not compete, estrous females preferred and mated with the dominant males, but non-estrous females preferred subordinate males. However, when males competed, all dominant males gained the priority to mate, and the amicable behaviour between males, regardless of their dominant status, and between non-estrous females increased, compared with the behaviour between males and the estrous females. These results showed that interactions among Brandt’s voles were not only influenced by …

The Features Of Drosophila Core Promoters Revealed By Statistical Analysis, Naum I. Gershenzon, Edward N. Trifonov, Ilya P. Ioshikhes

Physics Faculty Publications

Background: Experimental investigation of transcription is still a very labor- and time-consuming process. Only a few transcription initiation scenarios have been studied in detail. The mechanism of interaction between basal machinery and promoter, in particular core promoter elements, is not known for the majority of identified promoters. In this study, we reveal various transcription initiation mechanisms by statistical analysis of 3393 nonredundant Drosophila promoters.

Results: Using Drosophila-specific position-weight matrices, we identified promoters containing TATA box, Initiator, Downstream Promoter Element (DPE), and Motif Ten Element (MTE), as well as core elements discovered in Human (TFIIB Recognition Element (BRE) and Downstream …

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

The implementation of safe and maximally effective ovarian stimulation is a major aim for in vitro fertilization (IVF) teams. The goal of controlled ovarian hyperstimulation (COH) is to supply enough oocytes with normal maturation to insure the consequent biological procedures. A variety of different stimulation protocols have been suggested and an individual selection of the correct stimulation protocol is mandatory. The aim of the present study is to evaluate the correlation between number of retrieved oocytes and clinical pregnancy rate (CPR) after IVF or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) procedures. We reviewed 1017 cycles in a total of 975 patients. The …

Career Paths Of Women Clinical Laboratory Scientists Who Have Become Higher Education Administrators, Suzanne Campbell

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

More women are joining their male colleagues as higher education administrators. However, only a small percentage of these women possess an academic background as clinical laboratory scientists. This qualitative case study sought to investigate and document the career paths of women clinical laboratory scientists that have transitioned from the clinical setting to the higher education arena and held an administrative position at the dean’s level, including assistant and associate dean positions.

Through face-to-face semi-formal interviews, the experiences of this purposive sample population were recorded. Areas of inquiry included a description of their career paths; an identification of the skills, training, …

An Essay On Vengeance And Forgiveness, Theodore Y. Blumoff Jun 2006

An Essay On Vengeance And Forgiveness, Theodore Y. Blumoff

ExpressO

Vengeance is generally accompanied by the moral emotion of resentment and indignation, which are also natural psychological reactions. We can and do give these emotions cognitive content, inasmuch as they have developed and matured over time with culture, but they are primitive. They arise when an individual suffers a non-trivial injury that was inflicted without excuse or justification. Among other injuries suffered, the harm done discounts the value we hold of ourselves as human beings, so that when this discounting (the crime or a substantial tort) occurs and we react defensively; our worth as an individual feels threatened. We hope …

Expression Of Ipt Gene Controlled By An Ethylene And Auxin Responsive Fragment Of The Leaco1 Promoter Increases Flower Number In Transgenic Nicotiana Tabacum, Mariya Khodakovskaya, Degang Zhao, William Smith, Yi Li, Richard Mcavoy

Plant Science Articles

Cytokinins play important roles in regulating plant growth and development. A new genetic construct for regulating cytokinin content in plant cells was cloned and tested. The gene coding for isopentenyl transferase (ipt) was placed under the control of a 0.821 kb fragment of the 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) oxidase gene promoter from Lycopersicon esculentum (LEACO1) and introduced into Nicotiana tabacum (cv. Havana). Some LEACO1(0.821) (kb)-ipt transgenic plant lines displayed normal shoot morphology but with a dramatic increase in the number of flower buds compared to nontransgenic plants. Other transgenic lines produced excessive lateral branch development but no change …

Hierarchical Lévy Frailty Models And A Frailty Analysis Of Data On Infant Mortality In Norwegian Siblings, Tron Anders Moger, Odd O. Aalen Jun 2006

Hierarchical Lévy Frailty Models And A Frailty Analysis Of Data On Infant Mortality In Norwegian Siblings, Tron Anders Moger, Odd O. Aalen

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Distributions determined by non-negative Lévy processes, which include the power variance function (PVF) distributions among others, are commonly used as frailty distributions to model dependent survival times in family data. We present a hierarchical frailty model constructed by randomizing scale parameters, corresponding to time parameters of Lévy processes, in the Lévy frailty distributions. In its simplest form, this yields a two-model with heterogeneity the individual and family level. The family level frailty is shared within families, creating dependence. In the more complex models, it is extended to allow for several levels of dependence. This yields models with nested dependence structures …

Systems Analysis Of Circadian Time-Dependent Neuronal Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Signaling, Daniel E. Zak, Haiping Hao, Rajanikanth Vadigepalli, Gregory M. Miller, Babatunde A. Ogunnaike, James S. Schwaber

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Background

Identifying the gene regulatory networks governing physiological signal integration remains an important challenge in circadian biology. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) has been implicated in circadian function and is expressed in the suprachiasmatic nuclei (SCN), the core circadian pacemaker. The transcription networks downstream of EGFR in the SCN are unknown but, by analogy to other SCN inputs, we expect the response to EGFR activation to depend on circadian timing.

Results

We have undertaken a systems-level analysis of EGFR circadian time-dependent signaling in the SCN. We collected gene-expression profiles to study how the SCN response to EGFR activation depends on …
