The Social Nature Of Natural Resources - The Case Of Water, Jamie Linton Jul 2006

The Social Nature Of Natural Resources - The Case Of Water, Jamie Linton

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Of all things, water is among the most difficult to pin down. It is nevertheless characteristic of modernity that we ascribe to it an essence, on which basis particular kinds of human-water relations are made possible while others are denied. The ascription of an essential identity to water constitutes a social and political act by which it is both made known to people and made available for people. This paper explores the implications of ascribing to water an identity as "resource." Water was pronounced a resource in the United States early in the last century in the context of the …

Donors, Modellers And Development Brokers: The Pork Barrel Of Water Management Research, Julie Trottier Jul 2006

Donors, Modellers And Development Brokers: The Pork Barrel Of Water Management Research, Julie Trottier

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Donors are shaping the mainstream research agenda concerning water management around the world. As large sums are made available within applied research programmes, many actors are competing to access them. This has led to the development of a new class of actors: the water research development brokers. Development brokers have mostly been studied in the developing world. They are usually defined as local actors who master the knowledge framework of donor organizations while their social positions and local networks allow them to act as intermediaries between the local population targeted by the donor and the donor itself. Such a position …

Time And The Tsunami, Stefan Helmreich Jul 2006

Time And The Tsunami, Stefan Helmreich

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In this article, Stefan Helmreich delivers an ethnographic report on an international academic conference of physical and biological oceanographers held in Goa, India, shortly after the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 26, 2004. Juxtaposing scientific discussions of the tsunami with novelist and anthropologist Amitav Ghosh's early 2005 visit to the hard-hit Andaman Islands, Helmreich examines various styles of narrating time in circulation in the wake of the disaster. Centering his attention on marine scientists, Helmreich discusses a tension between geological time and what he calls oscillating ocean time, a genre of time that takes in such long durée processes …

Overlooking, Rivers, Looking Over, T.S. Mcmillin Jul 2006

Overlooking, Rivers, Looking Over, T.S. Mcmillin

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In this hybrid essay, composed of literary theory, cultural history, and fieldwork, T.S. McMillin attempts to connect the humanities to other disciplines and to connect scholarly work to the land. In the first part of the essay, he briefly develops a theory of palindromes and palindromic reflection. Palindromes connect thinking to movement and to reflection, and in turn serve as a model for experiencing texts or terrain. Occurring in music, literature, film and video art, mathematics, painting, even genetic code, palindromes underscore the complexity of the nature of things and the necessarily complex thinking that understanding the nature of things …

Growing Up With Glen, Kathryn Miles Jul 2006

Growing Up With Glen, Kathryn Miles

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

Ecologists refer to it as 'shifting baselines.' Anthropologists call it 'environmental generational amnesia.' Both refer to the slow change in the ways we respond to and define the environment. As biologists and social scientists have deftly argued, definitions of environmentalism and sustainable resource use are often based on our earliest experiences with nature. We then use these memories as the basis for our understanding of the natural world and its use. Ultimately, this creates a generational approach to issues of conservation, particularly with regards to such contentious issues as water rights and the changing face of the American West. At …

Analysis Of Different Types Of Attentional Interference Compared To Working Memory, Joel A. Gregor Jul 2006

Analysis Of Different Types Of Attentional Interference Compared To Working Memory, Joel A. Gregor

Doctor of Psychology (PsyD)

Previous studies have shown a relationship between working memory (WM) and the Color-Word Stroop Task (CWS). Newer Stroop-like tasks such as the Color-Block Stroop-like Task (CBS) have been shown to cause interference but the nature of the interference is unclear. This study attempted to compare CWS and CBS to tests of working memory, specifically the Digits Span Backward task (DB) and an Operation Span (OSPAN) task. The first experiment involved no auditory stimuli. No significant correlation was found between WM and CWS. This led to a second experiment with the digit span administered auditorily. Again, no significant correlation between CWS …

Numerical Simulation And Graphical Analysis Of In Vitro Benign Tumor Growth: Application Of Single-Particle State Bosonic Matter Equation With Length Scaling, Pradip K. Biswas, Jiansen Niu, Tobias Frederico, Valentin Gogonea Jul 2006

Numerical Simulation And Graphical Analysis Of In Vitro Benign Tumor Growth: Application Of Single-Particle State Bosonic Matter Equation With Length Scaling, Pradip K. Biswas, Jiansen Niu, Tobias Frederico, Valentin Gogonea

Chemistry Faculty Publications

We describe the application of a non-linear single-particle state bosonic condensate equation to simulate multicellular tumor growth by treating it as a coupling of two classical wave equations with real components. With one component representing the amplitude of the cells in their volume growth phase and the other representing the amplitude of the cells in their proliferation or mitosis phase, the two components of the coupled equation feed each other during the time evolution and are coupled together through diffusion and other linear and non-linear terms. The features of quiescent and necrotic cells, which result from poor nutrient diffusion into …

Caliche As A Geological Repository For Atmospheric Sulfate, Katie J. Howell, Huiming Bao Jul 2006

Caliche As A Geological Repository For Atmospheric Sulfate, Katie J. Howell, Huiming Bao

Faculty Publications

Recent studies demonstrate that important information on sulfur source, oxidation pathway, transport pattern, and reaction kinetics of atmospheric oxidation of sulfur gases can be uncovered by measuring multiple isotope compositions of the oxidation product - secondary atmospheric sulfate (SAS). SAS from Earth's distant past, however, is rarely preserved in the rock records because of its high solubility and small quantity. We report here from the measurement of 47 modern and fossil caliche samples that caliches contain variable amounts of carbonate-associated sulfate (CAS), and the Δ17O values of the CAS range from -0.12 to +2.32‰ with most values higher than the …

Physical Therapy Students’ Application Of A Clinical Decision-Making Model, Jeannie Wessel, Renee Williams, Beverley Cole Jul 2006

Physical Therapy Students’ Application Of A Clinical Decision-Making Model, Jeannie Wessel, Renee Williams, Beverley Cole

Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice

Purpose: Most educational programs in the health sciences present their students with a clinical decision-making model (CDMM) to help them define and treat client problems with a client-centered approach. However, little is known about how well students apply such a model in a clinical setting. The purpose of this study was to determine whether physical therapy students used a CDMM to make clinical decisions, and how well they used it. Method: Fifty-four physical therapy students in their first full-time clinical placement were asked to write up one of their client cases explaining how they made their clinical decisions and evaluating …

“A Highly Ambiguous Condition”: The Transgender Subject, Experimental Narrative And Trans-Reading Identity In The Fiction Of Virginia Woolf, Angela Carter, And Jeanette Winterson, Jennifer A. Smith Jul 2006

“A Highly Ambiguous Condition”: The Transgender Subject, Experimental Narrative And Trans-Reading Identity In The Fiction Of Virginia Woolf, Angela Carter, And Jeanette Winterson, Jennifer A. Smith

Dissertations

This dissertation examines how the constantly evolving gender identity o f a text’s transgender subject relates to the text’s narrative structure and shapes the orientation o f the reader to the text. Accordingly, this project examines how these transgender narratives deploy experimental stylistic techniques that enhance the reader’s experience of ceaseless transitioning by revealing gender as a constant process that never solidifies onto a body and by highlighting the text’s own status as process rather than finalized product. Further, this project examines how a transgender subject and his/her relationship to the body, culture, and narrative is involved in the re-vision …

How To Talk To Your Children About Unemployment, Liz Gorham Jul 2006

How To Talk To Your Children About Unemployment, Liz Gorham

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Off-farm employment provides over half of the income of many farm and ranch families (U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics 1999). They have come to depend on the extra income. So when an adult quits the town job or is laid off, the consequent stress spreads to everyone in the family. Layoffs can happen just at the time the farm family most critically needs that extra income. In South Dakota in particular, the economic health of all communities, big and small, is tied to the agricultural economy. If the latter falters because of drought, blizzards, or other natural disasters, workers in …

Taking Care Of Your Nutritional And Physical Needs, Joan Hegerfeld

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

When asked what they value most, many people will say their health. However, when faced with a stressful situation that will not go away, the same people forget all about their health and start worrying. Farm and ranch families struggle with extreme stress from uncontrollable forces such as weather, low market prices, or farm machinery breaking down. For many farmers, ranchers, and farm workers, decision making and adjusting to the extraordinary stress consumes their whole thinking, their whole days, their sleepless nights. Their livelihood is dependent upon forces over which they have no control. Eating right and getting adequate amounts …

Health Insurance: Is Your Child Covered?, Liz Gorham Jul 2006

Health Insurance: Is Your Child Covered?, Liz Gorham

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

The basic purpose of health insurance is protection. It protects the policyholder and his or her family from a designated catastrophic loss. It’s all about the “law of large numbers.” The health risk identified is transferred to a large group of individuals. The group shares in the financial losses suffered by a few members of the group, reducing the cost to any individual or family.

Exposure Of Nervous System Cells To Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs), Results In Alterations Of Neurotrophic Factor Expression, Gordon H. Gurley Jul 2006

Exposure Of Nervous System Cells To Polychlorinated Biphenyls (Pcbs), Results In Alterations Of Neurotrophic Factor Expression, Gordon H. Gurley

Dissertations

Toxic insult by PCBs results in learning and memory deficits in humans. Alterations in expression of neurotrophic factors (NF) and/or their receptors have been linked to changes in learning and memory. How PCBs affect cognition is not known. We suggest that PCBs affect cognition by altering NF expression.

We exposed cultured C6 rat glioblastoma cells (an astrocyte cell-line) to medium containing PCB (Aroclor 1254 (10ppm)). Control cells were treated with dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) or regular medium. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) were used to determine glial cell-line derived neurotrophic factor(GDNF) and nerve growth factor (NGF) concentrations in all samples. We also …

Countering Terrorism Across The Atlantic?, Kimberley L. Thachuk Jul 2006

Countering Terrorism Across The Atlantic?, Kimberley L. Thachuk

Defense Horizons

Differences in strategic vision and concepts of security are central to the U.S. and European Union (EU) approaches to counterterrorism. While the United States conceives of a war against terrorism, Europe does not. As a result of different perceptions of the threat, both sides of the Atlantic take divergent approaches to homeland security. Europeans tend to favor the use of a law enforcement strategy over a warfighting approach. Meanwhile, the U.S. administration believes that a quasi-militaristic, overtly proactive, and highly vigilant stance will serve as the best deterrent to future attacks. By their own standards, Europeans are doing more to …

Is The Devil In The Detail? : The Convention On Biological Diversity And The Antinomy Between Global Governance And State Sovereignity Over Plant Resources, Ikechi Mgbeoji Jul 2006

Is The Devil In The Detail? : The Convention On Biological Diversity And The Antinomy Between Global Governance And State Sovereignity Over Plant Resources, Ikechi Mgbeoji

Articles & Book Chapters

The 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity represents an attempt by the international community to take an organic ecosystem approach to the global biodiversity regime. The Convention has the potential to protect plants diminishing rapidly worldwide; despite the problems posed by the concept of national sovereignty, the problematic status of the ‘common heritage of mankind’ concept, the difficulties of holding states responsible for internationally wrongful acts, imbalances in economic power worldwide, and the difficulties inherent in protecting local and indigenous knowledge.

Accelerated Non-Coding Rna Searches With Covariance Model Approximations, Jennifer A. Smith Jul 2006

Accelerated Non-Coding Rna Searches With Covariance Model Approximations, Jennifer A. Smith

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

Covariance models (CMs) are a very sensitive tool for finding non-coding RNA (ncRNA) genes in DNA sequence data. However, CMs are extremely slow. One reason why CMs are so slow is that they allow all possible combinations of insertions and deletions relative to the consensus model even though the vast majority of these are never seen in practice. In this paper we examine reduction in the number of states in covariance models. A simplified CM with reduced states which can be scored much faster is introduced. A comparison of the results of a full CM versus a reduced-state model found …

The Lift Pool Method For Isolation Of Cdna Clones From Lambda Phage Libraries, Janine M. Leblanc-Straceski, Pablo Sobrado, Sharon Betz, Julie Zerfas, Karen Morgan

Biology Faculty Publications

A PCR based strategy was developed to screen a Xenopus oocyte λgt10 cDNA library. The PCR-based lift pool (LP) method follows the same two tiered strategy as conventional screening of phage libraries by filter hybridization. Two rounds of plating, one at high density to detect the clone, and one at low density to purify the clone to homogeneity, are performed. In the first round, lysates from high density plates, termed plate pools (PP), serve as template for PCR. In the second round, phage particles adhering to plaque lifts of low density plates are washed off nitrocellulose filters to create LPs, …
