Ecological Fitting As A Determinant Of The Community Structure Of Platyhelminth Parasites Of Anurans, Daniel R. Brooks, Virginia León-Règagnon, Deborah Mclennan, Derek Zelmer
Faculty Publications
Host–parasite associations are assumed to be ecologically specialized, tightly coevolved systems driven by mutual modification in which host switching is a rare phenomenon. Ecological fitting, however, increases the probability of host switching, creating incongruences between host and parasite phylogenies, when (1) specialization on a particular host resource is a shared characteristic of distantly related parasites, and (2) the resource being tracked by the parasite is widespread among many host species. We investigated the effect of ecological fitting on structuring the platyhelminth communities of anurans from a temperate forest and grassland in the United States and tropical dry and wet forests …

The soft coral Sarcophyton glaucum is a rich resource of several bioactive cembranoids. Sarcophytol A (1) and sarcophine (2) are cembranoid diterpenes reported from this soft coral and extensively investigated for their cancer chemopreventive properties. This study aimed at investigating the antimetastatic potential of the major cembranoids, sarcophine (2) and 2-epi-16-deoxysarcophine (3), from the Red Sea soft coral S. glaucum. Biocatalytic transformation of 3 using Rhizopus stolonifer ATCC 6227a and Absidia spinosa ATCC 6648 afforded four new metabolites, 5-7 and 9, along with the known 9α-hydroxysarcophine (8). Sarcophine, 2-epi-16-deoxysarcophine, and metabolites 5-9 revealed significant antimetastatic activity against the highly metastatic …

Very little is known about the role of DNA repair networks in Brucella abortus and its role in pathogenesis. We investigated the roles of RecA protein, DNA repair, and SOS regulation in B. abortus. While recA mutants in most bacterial species are hypersensitive to UV damage, surprisingly a B. abortus recA null mutant conferred only modest sensitivity. We considered the presence of a second RecA protein to account for this modest UV sensitivity. Analyses of the Brucella spp. genomes and our molecular studies documented the presence of only one recA gene, suggesting a RecA-independent repair process. Searches of the available …

While it is well established that viruses play an important role in the structure of marine microbial food webs, few studies have directly addressed their role in large lake systems. As part of an ongoing study of the microbial ecology of Lake Erie, we have examined the distribution and diversity of viruses in this system. One surprising result has been the pervasive distribution of cyanophages that infect the marine cyanobacterial isolate Synechococcus sp. strain WH7803. Viruses that lytically infect this cyanobacterium were identified throughout the western basin of Lake Erie, as well as in locations within the central and eastern …

Breakup Of Spiral And Concentric Ringed Spherulites In Polymer Crystallization, Haijun Xu, Hao-Wen Chiu, Yoshifumi Okabe, Thein Kyu
College of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering
Recently, the breakup of spiral and concentric ringed spherulites has been observed experimentally in isothermal crystallization of poly(vinylidene fluoride) in its blends with ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer. To elucidate the phenomenon of spiral breakup in polymer spherulites, a theoretical simulation has been undertaken in the framework of the phase field model of solidification based on time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations (TDGL model C) pertaining to the conserved concentration and nonconserved phase field order parameters. The concentration order parameter was described in terms of the Landau-type potential, while the crystal order parameter was expressed in terms of an asymmetric double-well potential to account …

Caliche As A Geological Repository For Atmospheric Sulfate, Katie J. Howell, Huiming Bao
Caliche As A Geological Repository For Atmospheric Sulfate, Katie J. Howell, Huiming Bao
Faculty Publications
Recent studies demonstrate that important information on sulfur source, oxidation pathway, transport pattern, and reaction kinetics of atmospheric oxidation of sulfur gases can be uncovered by measuring multiple isotope compositions of the oxidation product - secondary atmospheric sulfate (SAS). SAS from Earth's distant past, however, is rarely preserved in the rock records because of its high solubility and small quantity. We report here from the measurement of 47 modern and fossil caliche samples that caliches contain variable amounts of carbonate-associated sulfate (CAS), and the Δ17O values of the CAS range from -0.12 to +2.32‰ with most values higher than the …

Forest structure and species distribution patterns were examined among eight topographically defined habitats for the 205 species with stems ≥ 1 cm dbh inhabiting a 25-ha plot in the Sinharaja rain forest, Sri Lanka. The habitats were steep spurs, less-steep spurs, steep gullies and less-steep gullies, all at either lower or upper elevations. Mean stem density was significantly greater on the upper spurs than in the lower, less-steep gullies. Stem density was also higher on spurs than in gullies within each elevation category and in each upper-elevation habitat than in its corresponding lower-elevation habitat. Basal area varied less among habitats, …

Can We Talk? Feminist Economists In Dialogue With Social Theorists, Julie A. Nelson
Can We Talk? Feminist Economists In Dialogue With Social Theorists, Julie A. Nelson
Economics Faculty Publication Series
The article focuses on the issues regarding the social and political theory of feminism. It has been mentioned that political action will be dynamized rather than compromised by a more alive observation of economic organizations and activities. The author has suggested that feminist social theorists across the disciplines must join the several feminist economists who are dropping the negative one-size-fits-all prescription of protection from markets. It is essential to have more positive results in the complex contemporary economies.
Catastrophic Risk And Governance After Hurricane Katrina: A Postscript To Terrorism Risk In A Post-9/11 Economy, Robert J. Rhee
Catastrophic Risk And Governance After Hurricane Katrina: A Postscript To Terrorism Risk In A Post-9/11 Economy, Robert J. Rhee
UF Law Faculty Publications
This essay inquires into the political economy and system of governance that have made catastrophes more frequent and severe. The system of governance that is designed to mitigate risk and respond to catastrophes can be ineffective, or worse, increase the risk of harm through unintended consequences. Human influence must be considered a source of collateral risk, the kind that leads to a systemic crisis or exacerbates one. This essay concludes with some brief proposals, discussion topics more than completed ideas, which may facilitate further academic and political dialogue on effective governance and public risk management. They include a catastrophe tax, …

Aintegumenta Contributes To Organ Polarity And Regulates Growth Of Lateral Organs In Combination With Yabby Genes, Staci Nole-Wilson, Beth A. Krizek
Faculty Publications
Lateral organs in flowering plants display polarity along their adaxial-abaxial axis with distinct cell types forming at different positions along this axis. Members of three classes of transcription factors in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana; the Class III homeodomain/leucine zipper [HD-ZIP] proteins, KANADI proteins, and YABBY proteins) are expressed in either the adaxial or abaxial domain of organ primordia where they confer these respective identities. Little is known about the factors that act upstream of these polarity-determining genes to regulate their expression. We have investigated the relationship between AINTEGUMENTA (ANT), a gene that promotes initiation and growth of lateral …

We stocked phase-III sunshine bass (white bass Morone chrysops ♀ × striped bass M. saxatilis ♂) at a rate of 6,188 fingerlings/ha into twelve 0.04-ha earthen ponds supplied with continuous aeration. Three dietary treatments were randomly assigned to quadruplicate ponds. Sunshine bass were fed to apparent satiation once daily after average initial weight (mean ± SE = 214 ± 5 g) and total length (245 ± 1.6 mm) were determined. Diets were formulated to conserve the estimated digestible energy:crude protein (CP) ratio (9.3 kcal/g protein) and represented the following CP and energy values fed to fish: 32% CP (3,000 kcal/kg), …

Microwave Dielectric Properties Of On-Chip Liquid Films, Chunrong Song, Syed Azimuudin, Byungje Lee, Frances J. Harackiewicz, Max Yen, Divan Ralu, Axel Hoffman, Pingshan Wang
Conference Proceedings
A microwave characterization method for on-chip liquid film dielectric property measurement is developed. Microstrip-line based on-chip test structures are fabricated to characterize the microwave dielectric properties of various on-chip liquid films: DI water and binary mixtures of DI water with glucose and ethanol. The obtained microwave dielectric properties are presented in Cole-Cole diagrams, which show general frequency dependence similar to that of bulk liquids. Different concentration levels of glucose and ethanol show different microwave dielectric responses. Therefore, on-chip microwave dielectric spectroscopy provides a promising and inexpensive on-chip sensing mechanism for biomedical and chemical applications.
Help For Hotspots: Ngo Participation In The Preservation Of Worldwide Diversity, Bradley M. Bernau
Help For Hotspots: Ngo Participation In The Preservation Of Worldwide Diversity, Bradley M. Bernau
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
This Note explores the role that nongovernmental organizations can and do play in the preservation of global biodiversity hotspots. The hotspot concept-developed in the late 1980s alongside the new field of conservation biology-identifies particular areas of the world that contain high levels of endemic species that are highly threatened or endangered. Some experts have argued that by focusing species conservation efforts on these areas, a maximum amount of species can be protected and preserved using a minimum amount of time, money, and effort, allowing the remaining, scarce funds and resources to be directed toward species conservation efforts elsewhere.

Using Global Themes To Reframe The Bioprospecting Debate, Jonathan B. Warner
Using Global Themes To Reframe The Bioprospecting Debate, Jonathan B. Warner
Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies
The objective of this Note is to use global themes and perspectives to aid in reframing the bioprospecting debate. The current state of this debate, its problems, and proposed solutions are reviewed. In looking at the impact of local responses to globalization on bioprospecting themes, I propose that more internationally competitive laws could allow an escape from some of the undesired effects of bioprospecting, while promoting more desired effects. I also suggest, independently, that undesired effects could be avoided and desired effects promoted through methods that seek to recognize the global identity of concerned citizens.
