Anguilliform Larvae Collected Off North Carolina, Steve W. Ross, Tara L. Casazza, Andrea M. Quattrini, Kenneth J. Sulak

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

The distinctive larval stage of eels (leptocephalus) facilitates dispersal through prolonged life in the open ocean. Leptocephali are abundant and diverse off North Carolina, yet data on distributions and biology are lacking. The water column (from surface to 1,293 m) was sampled in or near the Gulf Stream off Cape Hatteras, Cape Lookout, and Cape Fear, North Carolina during summer through fall of 1999–2005, and leptocephali were collected by neuston net, plankton net, Tucker trawl, and dip net. Additional samples were collected nearly monthly from a transect across southern Onslow Bay, North Carolina (from surface to 91 m) from April …

Hillsborough Filter Pilot Project (2006), Stormwater Academy

BMP Trains Research and Publications

A zeolite filter pilot plant was operated over a 216 day period to evaluate its ability to enhance nitrogen removal from stormwater. When operated at a steady filtration rate of 192 gal/ft2 -day, the zeolite filter was highly effective at removing ammonia, producing an effluent ammonia nitrogen concentration of 0.07 mg/L, and removing 93% of ammonia and 32% of total inorganic nitrogen. A variety of non-steady state experiments demonstrated that the zeolite filter performance was superior to a parallel sand filter under the varying conditions that are common to stormwater management systems. A storm event was simulated by applying a …

Ecological Investigations Of Chukars In Western Utah, Randy T. Larsen Jul 2006

Ecological Investigations Of Chukars In Western Utah, Randy T. Larsen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents three separate manuscripts in chapter format dealing with the ecology of Chukars (Alectoris chukar) in western North America. All three manuscripts have been formatted for publication in professional journals. Chapter one confirms discovery of ingested lead pellets in Chukars across a broad region of western Utah including all four western counties sampled. Prevalence rates were 1.9% (n=105) for crops and 10.7% (n=75) of gizzards showing no evidence of penetration wounds. Ingestion is likely related to grit size preferences that are consistent with common shot sizes. The second chapter describes watering patterns and water-site selection of Chukars. Chukars …

Disease Risks Associated With Increasing Feral Swine Numbers And Distribution In The United States, Thomas Hutton, Thomas J. Deliberto, Sheldon Owen, Bruce Morrison Jul 2006

Disease Risks Associated With Increasing Feral Swine Numbers And Distribution In The United States, Thomas Hutton, Thomas J. Deliberto, Sheldon Owen, Bruce Morrison

Michigan Bovine Tuberculosis Bibliography and Database

Feral hogs or “wild boars” come from several sources and include released or escaped domestic swine and the truly wild European boar. When free-roaming in North America, all are included in the term “feral swine,” as are hybrids of the two types. Although morphologically distinct, both the feral swine and European wild swine are recognized as Sus scrofa. The physical damage caused by feral swine has been well documented and includes damage to vehicles, vineyards, tree plantings, archaeological sites, agricultural crops, turf, soils, rare plant communities, and wildlife habitat (Seward et al. 2004). In addition they compete with livestock …

Managing Uncertainties In Radioactive Site Clean-Ups, Clark University, Robert Goble, Abel Russ, Octavia Taylor, Seth Tuler

Clark University

Our goals in this discussion derive from our belief that effective cleanups that meet broad public health and social welfare objectives are most likely to occur when there is real cooperation between the parties responsible for cleanup and the affected communities. Such cooperation at most radioactive sites of concern is extremely difficult to achieve. The technical nature and complexity of the issues is a serious barrier to communication: faced with lengthy and incomprehensible technical documents that set forth apparently arbitrary goals for cleanup, community people may well feel that the responsible parties are not addressing their principal concerns, and often …

Pka As An Upstream Kinase For Lkb1/Strad/Mo25, Seth Taylor Herway Jul 2006

Pka As An Upstream Kinase For Lkb1/Strad/Mo25, Seth Taylor Herway

Theses and Dissertations

The LKB1/STRAD/MO25 complex (LSMK) has been identified as the major upstream kinase for AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). PKA phosphorylates LKB1 at the Ser428 residue in humans and Ser431 residue in mice. We investigated PKA as an upstream kinase for LSMK. LKB1 that had been incubated with PKA prior to incubation with AMPK experienced up to a 51% increase in AMPK Kinase activity compared to LKB1 alone (p < 0.05). When blocked with a PKA Inhibitor, the kinase effect of PKA on LKB1 was eliminated. Rat epitrochlearis muscle tissue incubated with epinephrine experienced no increase in AMPK activity compared with controls indicating that epinephrine does not cause AMPK activity in this type of tissue. In conclusion, phosphorylation by PKA can increase the AMPKK activity of LKB1-STRAD-MO25 in vitro. Because LKB1 has been found to be constitutively active, it is postulated that phosphorylation by PKA may act to enhance LKB1-AMPK interaction and thus achieve its effect.

Identification Of Clustered Yy1 Binding Sites In Imprinting Control Regions, Jeong Do Kim, Angela K. Hinz, Anne Bergmann, Jennifer M. Huang, Ivan Ovcharenko, Lisa Stubbs, Joomyeong Kim

Faculty Publications

Mammalian genomic imprinting is regulated by imprinting control regions (ICRs) that are usually associated with tandem arrays of transcription factor binding sites. In this study, the sequence features derived from a tandem array of YY1 binding sites of Peg3-DMR (differentially methylated region) led us to identify three additional clustered YY1 binding sites, which are also localized within the DMRs of Xist, Tsix, and Nespas. These regions have been shown to play a critical role as ICRs for the regulation of surrounding genes. These ICRs have maintained a tandem array of YY1 binding sites during mammalian evolution. The in vivo binding …

The Effects Of 3-Phosphoglycerate And Other Metabolites On The Activation Of Amp-Activated Protein Kinase By Lkb1/Strad/Mo25, William John Ellingson Jul 2006

The Effects Of 3-Phosphoglycerate And Other Metabolites On The Activation Of Amp-Activated Protein Kinase By Lkb1/Strad/Mo25, William John Ellingson

Theses and Dissertations

Skeletal muscle contraction results in the phosphorylation and activation of the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) by an upstream kinase, AMPKK. The LKB1-STRAD-MO25 complex is the major AMPKK in skeletal muscle; however, LKB1-STRAD-MO25 activity is not increased by muscle contraction. This relationship suggests that phosphorylation of AMPK by LKB1-STRAD-MO25 during skeletal muscle contraction may be regulated by allosteric mechanisms. In this study we tested an array of metabolites including glucose-6-phosphate (G6P), fructose-6-phosphate (F6P), fructose 1,6-bisphosphate (F1,6-P2), 3-phosphoglycerate (3PG), glucose-1-phosphate (G1P), glucose-1,6-bisphosphate (G1,6-P2), adenosine diphosphate (ADP), carnitine (Carn), acetyl-carnitine (Acarn), inosine monophosphate (IMP), inosine, and ammonia for allosteric regulation. We found that …

Jumpstarting Phylogenetic Searches, Jesse Lewis Mecham Jul 2006

Jumpstarting Phylogenetic Searches, Jesse Lewis Mecham

Theses and Dissertations

Phylogenetic analysis is a central tool in studies of comparative genomics. When a new region of DNA is isolated and sequenced, researchers are often forced to throw away months of computation on an existing phylogeny of homologous sequences in order to incorporate this new sequence. The previously constructed trees are often discarded, and the researcher begins the search again from scratch. The jumpstarting algorithm uses trees from the prior search as a starting point for a new phylogenetic search. This technique drastically decreases search time for large data sets. This kind of analysis is necessary as researchers analyze tree of …

Economics Of Manure Phosphorus Distribution From Beef Feeding Operations, William F. Kissinger, Raymond E. Massey, Richard K. Koelsch, Galen E. Erickson

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

An economic model was developed to evaluate cost and value of manure distribution. Feedlots ranging in size from 2,500 head to 25,000 head one-time capacities were used as case studies to calculate excretion amounts from cattle fed diets with a range of phosphorus. Diet P and subsequent costs of distributing the manure were used to analyze the corresponding costs of manure distribution, in addition to determining the required available land needed to be in compliance with a nutrient management plan based on utilization of manure P by the crops grown.

The model illustrated when animals are fed diets of increasing …
