Background: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most common cause of acute bronchiolitis in infants and the elderly. Furthermore, epidemiological data suggest that RSV infection during infancy is a potent trigger of subsequent wheeze and asthma development. However, the mechanism by which RSV contributes to asthma is complex and remains largely unknown. A recent study indicates that the age of initial RSV infection is a key factor in determining airway response to RSV rechallenge. We hypothesized that severe RSV infection during neonatal development significantly alters lung structure and the pulmonary immune micro-environment; and thus, neonatal RSV infection is crucial in …

Department Of Family Services: Adoption Program Evaluation, Bonnie Abramson, Kristy Amasaki, Michael N. Johnson, James Padgett
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Persons contemplating adoption in Clark County face many legal boundaries and lengthy delays. Since adoption is a creature of Clark County, the answers usually can be found in state statutes, agency regulations, and court opinions. Federal statutory and constitutional laws also play a huge part in such areas as adoption subsidies, adoption of children with special needs, and training of all adoption workers.
While the overall adoption program is similar in all states, the fine points frequently differ. This research outlines the legal foundation of adoption, describing the adoption legal process, and the workings of the Department of Family Services …

Host Preference Of The Chinch Bug, Blissus Occiduus, Thomas Eickhoff, Frederick P. Baxendale, Tiffany Heng-Moss
Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications
The chinch bug, Blissus occiduus Barber (Hemiptera: Blissidae), is an important pest of buffalograss, Buchloë dactyloides (Nutall) Engelmann and potentially other turfgrass, crop, and non-crop hosts. Choice studies documented the number of B. occiduus present on selected turfgrasses, crops and weeds, and provided important insights into the host preferences of this chinch bug. Grasses with the most chinch bugs present included the warm-season turfgrasses B. dactyloides, zoysiagrass, Zoysia japonica Steudel, bermudagrass, Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers., and St. Augustinegrass , Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze. The other grasses tested, green foxtail, Setaria viridis (L.) Beauv, Kentucky bluegrass, Poa pratensis L., perennial …
The Purpose Of Child Support, Ira M. Ellman
The Purpose Of Child Support, Ira M. Ellman
ExpressO
What is the appropriate amount of child support to require in particular cases? How should we take account, if at all, of subsequent events such as either parent’s remarriage? It seems obvious that the answers to such questions ought to turn on our purpose in requiring support payments in the first place. But while fixing the amount of child support can be politically contentious, and has attracted the attention of partisans on both sides of the gender gap, the literature contains no systematic examination of support rules in light of their underlying policy purpose. This article fills that gap. It …

It Might Have Been: Risk, Precaution, And Opportunity Costs, Douglas A. Kysar
Cornell Law Faculty Publications
This Article, which is part of a larger project on the competing merits of cost-benefit analysis (CBA) and the precautionary principle (PP) as competing policymaking paradigms for environmental, health, and safety regulation, examines one specific plank of the case against the PP: the claim that the principle's ignorance of the opportunity costs of precaution leads to indeterminate or impoverishing policy advice. Because PP defenders emphasize the limits of human knowledge and the frequency of unpleasant surprises from technology and industrial development, they prefer an ex ante stance of precaution whenever a proposed activity meets some threshold possibility of causing severe …

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)
Studies dealing with factors which have an influence on students outcomes are reviewed, teacher variables and teacher training are among their most common findings to influence school achievement. This study analyses the variable in-service teacher training on students’ academic achievement. The analysis levels are departments and schools, being department the level where the relation among variables is more significative. There are significative correlations between the in-service teacher training in their own subject and the subject pedagogy in 50% of the analysed departments. In-service teacher training is recommended to be organized, taking into account these differences (context, teacher variables, in- service …

Computational Simulation Of Dynamics Of Nematic Liquid Crystals In The Presence Of Nanoparticles And Biological Macromolecules, Huangli Wu
Theses and Dissertations
Recent research shows that liquid crystals can be used to report the presence of different types of substances through optical amplication of ligand-receptor binding. In this work, simulations based on a coarse-grained method have been performed to study a class of liquid-crystal-based sensors. A tensor order parameter was used to model the liquid crystalline system and the Beris-Edwards formulation was employed to obtain the time evolution of a liquid crystal medium containing particles. The simulation cases are built using three-dimensional unstructured meshes and the simulation geometries studied include simple models involving spheres as well as detailed modeling for a protein. …
Conservation And Management Of Paddlefish In Mississippi With Emphasis On The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, Daniel Mark O'Keefe
Conservation And Management Of Paddlefish In Mississippi With Emphasis On The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, Daniel Mark O'Keefe
Theses and Dissertations
Paddlefish are long-lived large river fish which are declining in many areas of their range due to habitat modifications and overfishing. A framework for management of paddlefish in Mississippi is proposed and a case study of its application to the paddlefish population of the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway (TTW) is presented. The framework includes four phases: (I) distribution and stock assessment; (II) determination of limiting factors; (III) design and implementation of management actions; and (IV) review and monitoring. Phase I of management in the TTW consisted of gill-net surveys in four impoundments. Paddlefish abundance was estimated at 1,581 to 8,851 in Demopolis …

Development Of A Proof-Of-Concept Backpackable Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Calvin Russell Walker
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis documents the design and development of a robust backpackable proof-of-concept unmanned aerial vehicle. The unmanned aerial vehicle?s design departs from existing configurations in utilizing a keel beam fuselage which replaces the enclosed fuselage by a flat keel beam on which the sensors, the autopilot, their related power sources, and flight control systems are mounted. The keel beam fuselage is provides enhanced mounting capability for multiple sensors and quick reconfiguration in the field. The keel beam fuselage can also be manufactured quicker than a traditional enclosed fuselage. The objective of this study is to demonstrate that the keel beam …
Mechanobiology Of Soft Tissue Differentiation: Effect Of Hydrostatic Pressure, Joon Wan Shim
Mechanobiology Of Soft Tissue Differentiation: Effect Of Hydrostatic Pressure, Joon Wan Shim
Theses and Dissertations
This study was motivated by a theoretical formulation on mechanobiology of soft and hard skeletal tissue differentiation. To prove this formulation experimentally, I hypothesized that cartilaginous phenotype can be induced in vitro in a seemingly non-cartilaginous cell source from fibrous tissue. In testing this hypothesis, I have focused on cartilage as a target and fibrous tissue as an origin or the source of cell. Four different trials were pursued with one supposition in common, i.e. hydrostatic pressure is one of the main driving forces for chondroinduction in vitro. The first and second trials pertained to the influence of a relatively …
Finite Element-Boundary Integral Method And Its Application To Implantable Antenna Design For Wireless Data Telemetry, Jose S. Pvillalta
Finite Element-Boundary Integral Method And Its Application To Implantable Antenna Design For Wireless Data Telemetry, Jose S. Pvillalta
Theses and Dissertations
A non-stationary Krylov subspace based iterative solver for the three dimensional finite element-boundary integral (FE-BI) method for implantable antennas is presented. The present method numerically solves the frequency domain Maxwell?s equations in the variational form to formulate the finite element solution using hexahedral discretization elements in conjunction with the appropriate boundary integral equations. Four different solvers are used to investigate the convergence behavior of the FE-BI technique on the design of the antennas. The scheme is then applied to two miniaturized planar inverted-F antennas (PIFA): a serpentine and a spiral. The antennas are designed for the Medical Implant Communication Service …
Statistical Analysis Of The Effects Of Atropine And Propranolol On The Inter-Beat Interval Of Rats, Abdud Dahian
Statistical Analysis Of The Effects Of Atropine And Propranolol On The Inter-Beat Interval Of Rats, Abdud Dahian
Theses and Dissertations
Heart rate variability (HRV) analysis has proved to be an important tool for assessing autonomic nervous system. For instance, it has been used during dipyridamole echocardiographic test to differentiate ischemic from nonischemic responses [6]. RR Interval analysis can provide additional information that can lead to early detection of a possible change in the activity of the autonomic nervous system. HRV analysis can be done using Wavelet Transform. This thesis presents a modification of an existing algorithm for extracting the R-R interval from EKG data sets and the use of wavelet transform (WT) technique to compute the timerequency domain energy quantities. …

Nlcviz: Tensor Visualization And Defect Detection In Nematic Liquid Crystals, Ketan Mehta
Theses and Dissertations
Visualization and exploration of nematic liquid crystal (NLC) data is a challenging task due to the multidimensional and multivariate nature of the data. Simulation study of an NLC consists of multiple timesteps, where each timestep computes scalar, vector, and tensor parameters on a geometrical mesh. Scientists developing an understanding of liquid crystal interaction and physics require tools and techniques for effective exploration, visualization, and analysis of these data sets. Traditionally, scientists have used a combination of different tools and techniques like 2D plots, histograms, cut views, etc. for data visualization and analysis. However, such an environment does not provide the …
Adsorption Of Water Contaminants Onto Kenaf Fibers, Stephen Douglas Tolar
Adsorption Of Water Contaminants Onto Kenaf Fibers, Stephen Douglas Tolar
Theses and Dissertations
In this research, the adsorptive capacities of kenaf in the forms of chopped whole stalk, chopped core, and bast materials were evaluated for the removal of lead, zinc, and toluene from contaminated synthetic waste streams using traditional adsorption isotherm techniques. The effect of surface oxidation using ozone was observed with respect to the adsorption of metals. Hydraulic conductivity experiments were conducted to evaluate the head loss associated with packing a column with kenaf fibers and to determine the suitability of its use in dynamic packed column systems. B.E.T. surface areas were determined as well. Under increasingly stringent regulatory requirements, even …
Can Holistic Wellness Predict Teacher Effectiveness?, Dana Rolison Harwell
Can Holistic Wellness Predict Teacher Effectiveness?, Dana Rolison Harwell
Theses and Dissertations
Wellness literature reported that the current focus on academic achievement and high-stakes testing has sacrificed wellness in students, and ?there is a strong need and a public outcry to promote wellness in public schools? (Myers & Sweeney, 2005a, p. 228). Also, ?the promotion of schoolwide well-being will enrich the academic experience of students and families. In addition, school staff members who are aware and knowledgeable of wellness concepts may be more likely to apply healthy strategies in the curriculum and throughout the school? (Myers & Sweeney, p. 232). Effective teacher research supported the Student Teacher Assessment Instrument as a viable …
An Archaeological Investigation Of Four Woodland-Period Sites In The North Central Hills Physiographic Region Of Mississippi, Jason Lee Parrish
An Archaeological Investigation Of Four Woodland-Period Sites In The North Central Hills Physiographic Region Of Mississippi, Jason Lee Parrish
Theses and Dissertations
Woodland-period archaeological sites in the North Central Hills physiographic region of Mississippi appear to be highly variable in occupation size, site function, duration, and occupational intensity. To better understand the occupational history and settlement patterns of such sites, several characteristics of four Woodland-period sites located within the Tombigbee National Forest, Ackerman Unit, Mississippi, are evaluated and compared to a larger, previously investigated site, 22WI516. From the data obtained in the field and laboratory, a determination of the causes of the variability among Woodland-period sites in the study area is attempted. Physiographic constraints appear to underlie much of the variability presented …
Applying Goodness-Of-Fit Techniques In Testing Time Series Gaussianity And Linearity, Nusrat Jahan
Applying Goodness-Of-Fit Techniques In Testing Time Series Gaussianity And Linearity, Nusrat Jahan
Theses and Dissertations
In this study, we present two new frequency domain tests for testing the Gaussianity and linearity of a sixth-order stationary univariate time series. Both are two-stage tests. The first stage is a test for the Gaussianity of the series. Under Gaussianity, the estimated normalized bispectrum has an asymptotic chi-square distribution with two degrees of freedom. If Gaussianity is rejected, the test proceeds to the second stage, which tests for linearity. Under linearity, with non-Gaussian errors, the estimated normalized bispectrum has an asymptotic non-central chi-square distribution with two degrees of freedom and constant noncentrality parameter. If the process is nonlinear, the …

Utilization Of Deionized Water And Non-Meat Adjuncts To Combat Quality Issues In Boneless Cured Ham Associated With Using Pale Raw Material, Jonathan Wilbourn
Theses and Dissertations
The effects of deionized water and PSE pork percentage on the quality of smoked deli ham and retorted pouched ham with and without non-meat adjuncts were evaluated. Product quality was determined through evaluation of water holding capacity, cooked color, protein-protein bind, and sensory quality. A randomized complete block design with either three or four replications was utilized to test treatment effects in three separate experiments. The retorting process showed the potential to reduce the effect of PSE meat on color that is present in raw material and smoked deli ham. In retorted ham, modified food starch and soy protein concentrate …

DNA protection during starvation (Dps) proteins play an important role in protecting cellular macromolecules from damage by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Unlike most orthologs that protect DNA by a combination of DNA binding and prevention of hydroxyl radical formation by ferroxidation and sequestration of iron, Dps-1 from the radiation-resistant Deinococcus radiodurans fails to protect DNA from hydroxyl radical-mediated cleavage through a mechanism inferred to involve continuous release of iron from the protein core. To address the structural basis for this unusual release of Fe2+, the crystal structure of D. radiodurans Dps-1 was determined to 2.0 Å resolution. Two of four …
