Meeting The Challenges Of Met Data With Mysql, Thomas S. Ciolek Oct 2006

Meeting The Challenges Of Met Data With Mysql, Thomas S. Ciolek

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The objective of this project is to develop a relational database housing meteorological data used in direct support of emergency response activities for an atmospheric consulting firm, hereon referred to by the pseudonym WindInc. The intent is to demonstrate to WindInc how a relational database system would be superior to their present flat-file approach by providing the flexibility, performance, and reliability needed to meet their ever-increasing business demands, while simultaneously boosting the performance of their atmospheric dispersion modeling system.

Investigation Of Device Parameters For Field-Effect Dna-Sensors By Three-Dimensional Simulation, Eddie Howell, Clemens Heitzinger, Gerhard Klimeck Oct 2006

Investigation Of Device Parameters For Field-Effect Dna-Sensors By Three-Dimensional Simulation, Eddie Howell, Clemens Heitzinger, Gerhard Klimeck

Other Nanotechnology Publications

The development of a DNA field-effect transistor (DNAFET) simulator is described and implications on device structure and future experiments are discussed. In DNAFETs the gate structure is replaced by a layer of immobilized single-stranded DNA molecules which act as surface probe molecules [1, 2]. When complementary DNA strands bind to the receptors, the charge distribution near the surface of the device changes, modulating current transport through the device and enabling detection (cf. Fig. 1 and 5). Arrays of DNAFETs can be used for detecting singlenucleotide polymorphisms and for DNA sequencing. The advantage of DNAFETs over optical methods of detection is …

Splitting Genes: The Future Of Gmo's In The Wake Of The Wto/Cartagena Standoff, Sam A. Blaustein Oct 2006

Splitting Genes: The Future Of Gmo's In The Wake Of The Wto/Cartagena Standoff, Sam A. Blaustein

ExpressO

This article examines the conflict surrounding GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms) between the WTO and the UN. The respective positions of the United States and the European Union are discussed. The article argues that both international and domestic laws conflict with the rigid "precautionary principle" and straight to market approach adhered to by the European Union and the United States respectively. It ultimately suggests that common GMO specific laws are necessary for both sides to meet their respective goals and obligations.

Factors Surrounding And Influencing The Primary Disclosure In Child Sexual Abuse, Kira O'Neil Bona Oct 2006

Factors Surrounding And Influencing The Primary Disclosure In Child Sexual Abuse, Kira O'Neil Bona

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

This study aimed to investigate the context within which children initially disclose their sexual abuse. The study sought to identify triggers that prompted the initial disclosure event, and to investigate the relationship between the choice of initial confidante and the childs age and likelihood of disclosing during formal interview. Data were obtained in a prospective fashion from 60 alleged child sexual abuse victims referred to the Yale Child Sexual Abuse Clinic (CSAC). Inclusion criteria required that a child must have disclosed to a confidante prior to referral to the Clinic; 57 of 60 children met this criterion and are included. …

C-Mpl Expression In Osteoclast Progenitors: A Novel Role For Thrombopoietin In Regulating Osteoclast Development, Calvin Langston Toure Barnes Oct 2006

C-Mpl Expression In Osteoclast Progenitors: A Novel Role For Thrombopoietin In Regulating Osteoclast Development, Calvin Langston Toure Barnes

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

A new paradigm has evolved in which multiple regulatory interactions between the skeletal and hematopoietic systems have been identified. Previous studies have demonstrated that megakaryocytes (MK) play a dual role in skeletal homeostasis by stimulating osteoblast proliferation and simultaneously inhibiting osteoclast (OC) development. Here we identify a novel regulatory pathway in which the main MK growth factor, thrombopoietin (TPO), directly regulates osteoclastogenesis. To study the role of TPO in OC development, spleen or bone marrow (BM) cells (2x106 cells/ml) or BM macrophages (BMM, 1x105 cells/ml) from C57BL/6 mice , as a source of OC precursors, were cultured with M-CSF (30 …

Long-Term Mortality For Older Diabetics Hospitalized With Acute Myocardial Infarction, Marwah Abdalla Oct 2006

Long-Term Mortality For Older Diabetics Hospitalized With Acute Myocardial Infarction, Marwah Abdalla

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Diabetics have higher mortality after myocardial infarction (MI), yet little is known regarding the impact of quality of care on long-term survival in older post-MI diabetics. Using data from the Cooperative Cardiovascular Project (CCP), a national cohort of 234,769 Medicare patients aged 65 or older hospitalized with confirmed AMI between 1994-1995, we assessed differences in 10-year mortality outcomes between diabetics and non-diabetics using Cox proportional regression. To account for quality of care, a composite measure among ideal candidates was constructed and entered into the final model adjusting for use of aspirin & beta-blocker on admission/discharge, angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors at discharge, …

Dynamic Evolution Of Selenocysteine Utilization In Bacteria: A Balance Between Selenoprotein Loss And Evolution Of Selenocysteine From Redox Active Cysteine Residues, Yan Zhang, Hector Romero, Gustavo Salinas, Vadim Gladyshev Oct 2006

Dynamic Evolution Of Selenocysteine Utilization In Bacteria: A Balance Between Selenoprotein Loss And Evolution Of Selenocysteine From Redox Active Cysteine Residues, Yan Zhang, Hector Romero, Gustavo Salinas, Vadim Gladyshev

Vadim Gladyshev Publications

Background: Selenocysteine (Sec) is co-translationally inserted into protein in response to UGA codons. It occurs in oxidoreductase active sites and often is catalytically superior to cysteine (Cys). However, Sec is used very selectively in proteins and organisms. The wide distribution of Sec and its restricted use have not been explained.
Results: We conducted comparative genomics and phylogenetic analyses to examine dynamics of Sec decoding in bacteria at both selenium utilization trait and selenoproteome levels. These searches revealed that 21.5% of sequenced bacteria utilize Sec, their selenoproteomes have 1 to 31 selenoproteins, and selenoprotein-rich organisms are mostly Deltaproteobacteria or Firmicutes/ Clostridia …

Casimir Forces And Non-Newtonian Gravitation, Roberto Onofrio Oct 2006

Casimir Forces And Non-Newtonian Gravitation, Roberto Onofrio

Dartmouth Scholarship

The search for non-relativistic deviations from Newtonian gravitation can lead to new phenomena signalling the unification of gravity with the other fundamental interactions. Various recent theoretical frameworks indicate a possible window for non-Newtonian forces with gravitational coupling strength in the micrometre range. The major expected background in the same range is attributable to the Casimir force or variants of it if dielectric materials, rather than conducting ones, are considered. Here we review the measurements of the Casimir force performed so far in the micrometre range and how they determine constraints on non-Newtonian gravitation, also discussing the dominant sources of false …

The P14 Fusion-Associated Small Transmembrane (Fast) Protein Effects Membrane Fusion From A Subset Of Membrane Microdomains, Jennifer A. Corcoran, Jayme Salsman, Roberto De Antueno, Ahmed Touhami, Manfred H. Jericho, Eileen K. Clancy, Roy Duncan

Physics & Astronomy Faculty Publications

The reovirus fusion-associated small transmembrane (FAST) proteins are a unique family of viral membrane fusion proteins. These nonstructural viral proteins induce efficient cell-cell rather than virus-cell membrane fusion. We analyzed the lipid environment in which the reptilian reovirus p14 FAST protein resides to determine the influence of the cell membrane on the fusion activity of the FAST proteins. Topographical mapping of the surface of fusogenic p14-containing liposomes by atomic force microscopy under aqueous conditions revealed that p14 resides almost exclusively in thickened membrane microdomains. In transfected cells, p14 was found in both Lubrol WX-and Triton X-100-resistant membrane complexes. Cholesterol depletion …

Late Holocene Lake-Level Fluctuations In Walker Lake, Nevada, Usa, Fasong Yuan, Braddock K. Linsley, Stephen S. Howe, Steve P. Lund, John P. Mcgeehin

Biological, Geological, and Environmental Faculty Publications

alker Lake, a hydrologically closed, saline, and alkaline lake, is situated along the western margin of the Great Basin in Nevada of the western United States. Analyses of the magnetic susceptibility (χ), total inorganic carbon (TIC), and oxygen isotopic composition (δ18O) of carbonate sediments including ostracode shells (Limnocythere ceriotuberosa) from Walker Lake allow us to extend the sediment record of lake-level fluctuations back to 2700 years B.P. There are approximately five major stages over the course of the late Holocene hydrologic evolution in Walker Lake: an early lowstand (> 2400 years B.P.), a lake-filling …
