The relationship between increased commodification and the public domain in copyright law is the subject of considerable controversy, both political and theoretical. The paper argues that beliefs about what legal definition the public domain requires depend crucially on implicit preconceptions about what a public domain is. When considered in broader historical context, the term public domain has a specific set of denotative and connotative meanings that constitute the artistic, intellectual, and informational public domain as a geographically separate place, portions of which are presumptively eligible for privatization. This idea meshes well with the current push toward commodification in copyright. The …

Participation is a key component in socially just, successful nature conservation. Yet, participation can range from informing citizens to offering them decision-making power. Only participation that allows for an open, respectful negotiation of conservation planning and implementation opens the door to engaging, place-appropriate conservation, rather than conservation implemented by external agents with external agendas. However ecologically or socially correct these external agendas may be, collaboration by all stakeholders validates the appropriateness of conservation projects. Les produits à base d’acrylates sont très utilisés dans plusieurs secteurs d’activité économique à cause de leur propriété adhésive. Par contre, leur utilisation peut causer une sensibilisation allergique dont les manifestations cutanées ont été décrites dès les années 40. Ces produits sont considérés, depuis une quinzaine d’années, comme responsables de rhinoconjonctivite et d’asthme professionnels. Certains cas ont déjà été diagnostiqués au Québec. Depuis sa sortie à l’été 2003, le Guide de prévention des coups de chaleur élaboré par un comité CSST-Réseau de la santé a soulevé un vif intérêt. Cet outil permet aux intéressés d’estimer le niveau de contrainte thermique par une méthode simple appelée température de l’air corrigée (T_a,corr) et suggère un ensemble de mesures à prendre selon quatre zones d’intensité de l’exposition. L’étude de Lavoie et Guertin (2002) sur les agents biologiques et les contraintes ergonomiques lors de l’utilisation de camions avec bras assisté a démontré que les principaux risques à la santé ou à la sécurité auxquels les éboueurs de la collecte conventionnelle sont traditionnellement exposés ont connu une forte diminution. Toutefois, l’existence de nouvelles problématiques associées à l’aménagement physique des camions et aux opérations d’entretien et de nettoyage a été aussi démontrée. It was over a decade ago when Rudine Sims Bishop (1992) prophetically dubbed Angela Johnson as possibly one of "the most prominent AfricanAmerican literary artists of the next generation" (616). At the time she had four picture books to her credit, but the following year she would publish her debut young adult novel, Toning the Sweep. From there, a number of other award-winners would follow and the total of young adult books would increase to eleven and counting. To date, Johnson has three Coretta Scott King Awards, a Michael L. Previous research has indicated that pinebark and hardwood bark can be used as a substrate in nursery production. The objective of this study is to determine the effect of bark source (pinebark and hardwood bark), particle size distribution, and irrigation frequency on the growth and quality of azalea (Rhododendron indicum ‘Red Ruffle’), Indian hawthorn (Rhapeolepis indica ‘Snow’), and ligustrum (Ligustrum japonicum). Recently, much evidence has been brought forth into the scientific community supporting the idea that RNA Polymerase III transcribed regions of DNA may serve as chromosomal landmarks for silencing. Transfer RNA genes are known to involve themselves in several extra-transcriptional functions within the chromosome, including the pausing of replication forks, Ty element integration, tRNA position effects (repression of neighboring genes), acting as a barrier to the spread of heterochromatin, and over-riding nuclosome positioning sequences. Our results suggest that many tRNA genes may serve these functions as well as exhibiting behavior similar to metazoan insulators. Also, ETC (Extra TFIIIC) sites within …

Volume is a proxy for biomass in hard bodied arthropods (P < 0.0001). I constructed biomass-volume equations for Neotropical (P < 0.0001), temperate (P < 0.0001) and 12 Neotropical genera of scarabs, of which 11 were highly significant. The effect of short term (< 1 year) alcohol storage on volume was negligable. I found scarab volume on geologically old soils in the Amazon was one-third that of the geologically young Amazon (P < 0.0001). Species richness (P = 0.0002), Chao 1 (P = 0.0003), Fisher’s  (P = 0.008) and Margalef indices (P = 0.0003) were greater on young soils. Menhinick (P = 0.54), Simpson (P = 0.54) and rarefied species richness (P = 0.24), which correct for sample size differences, indicated no difference in diversity. Young Amazonian soils likely support a higher volume and abundance of scarabs than old soils, but diversity across Amazonia may be similar. I compared beta-diversity of scarab communities across Amazonia. Species rank-abundance curves did not differ among sites whereas volume-abundance distributions and volume-rank abundance curves indicated a larger range of scarab sizes in Brazil than Ecuador. At local levels (<62 km), communities were similar whereas at large distances (>1750 km), they were different. Differences between Brazil and Ecuador may be explained by varied soil age and productivity. I examined the effects of tropical forest fragmentation on scarabs, comparing my results with three other studies from the same site. Among 1, 10, and 100-ha fragments and continuous forest, I found two important trends; beetle biomass and species richness increased with fragment area per sampling effort. Comparing all four studies, diversity increased with fragment size, and by my rarefaction analyses, two studies demonstrated beetle volume increased with fragment size. …

A number of environmental stressors have been shown to interfere with reproductive and behavioral processes of fish by interfering with endocrine function. Most biomarkers of endocrine disturbance tend to be static measurements from dynamic systems making them difficult to evaluate within the context of an individual, or subtle effects that do not relate well to endpoints of ecological significance. I present an approach that uses a series of models, based on Atlantic croaker, to extrapolate laboratory results to indicators of individual and population health. Black students who contend with such tension may be teased, alienated, or rejected by their peers who view academic achievement as characteristic of White people. ABSTRACT Solvent extraction methods are widely used for extracting antioxidant in foods and other sources. In this study, Traditional Solvent Extraction (TSE) and Microwave-Assisted Solvent Extraction (MASE) were utilized to determine the content of antioxidants in corn germ, wheat bran and wheat germ. Corn germ, wheat bran and wheat germ all contain different levels of antioxidants; TSE and MASE were utilized to determine the content of antioxidants in these three samples. In field research conducted over two years, red morningglory control 35 days after treatment (DAT) was at least 90 % with atrazine at 3.36 kg ai/ha, diuron plus hexazinone at 1.57 + 0.44 kg ai/ha, flumioxazin at 0.14 kg ai/ha, sulfentrazone at 0.21 kg ai/ha, and metribuzin at 2.52 kg ai/ha. At 49 DAT, atrazine at 4.48 kg/ha provided only 70 % control, which was equivalent to that for diuron plus hexazinone and flumioxazin. Sulfentrazone at 0.21 kg/ha controlled red morningglory at least 93 % 49 DAT and by 77 DAT control was 78 %. From June through October, red …

According to CDC (The Center for Disease Control and Prevention) estimates, E. coli O157:H7 is responsible for about 73,000 illnesses, 2,000 hospitalizations and 60 deaths in the United States each year. Cattle are the principal reservoir of E. coli O157:H7. At elevated levels, homocysteine (Hcy) is a risk factor for cardiovascular diseases and Alzheimer’s disease. It’s also implicated in a number of other diseases such as neural tube defects, pregnancy complications, and renal failures. The monitoring of Hcy levels in plasma is of current concern. To date, the biochemical mechanism by which Hcy is involved in disease states is unclear. Herein, we describe highly selective colorimetric methods for the direct determination of Hcy. Previous work in our laboratory has demonstrated not only a synthetic value of tandem reductive cyclization - carbonylation reactions in the preparation of complex molecules but also the interesting stereoselectivity observed therein. The first part of this work employs the titanium-mediated cyclocarbonylation of tethered dienals for the synthesis of prostaglandin analogues, in particular PGF_2α and methyl jasmonate. Based on this hetero Pauson-Khand strategy, we have established an efficient racemic route to both the prostaglandin and the methyl jasmonate core skeletons. Additions of acid anions can alter the cycling of other nutrients and elements within an ecosystem. As strong acid ions move through a forest, they may increase the concentrations of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) in the soil solution and stream water.
