Apolipoprotein E (apoE), a prominent player in transporting cholesterol and metabolizing plasma lipoproteins, has emerged as a major risk factor in causing Alzheimer's disease (AD). ApoE, extensively expressed in the primary olfactory pathway, binds to its low-density lipoprotein receptor and related receptors to play a role both in development and in control of the immune system. Previous studies have shown that apoE is expressed at high concentrations in the olfactory nerve (ON) and around the glomeruli of the olfactory bulb (OB) and that the apoE levels in these regions increase substantially following lesioning of the olfactory epithelium (OE). Tallgrass prairies have been drastically reduced to a few remnant areas that are both small and isolated. As a result, species within these areas may be exposed to a significant level of inbreeding depression and loss in genetic diversity, which can cause an overall loss of fitness in the population, increasing the chance of local extinction. In post-apartheid South Africa, writers continue to use political allegory to critique the democratic transition, racial tensions, and the reconcilation process. This use of allegory, although effective at times, often includes the sexual violation of the female body, further inhibiting gender equality as women continue to exist as secondclass citizens both in fiction and reality. This thesis analyzes three post-apartheid texts - Zakes Mda's The Madonna of Excelsior (2002), J.M. Platelet endothelial cell adhesion molecule- 1 (PECAM-1) is a cell surface glycoprotein receptor expressed on a range of blood cells, including platelets, and on vascular endothelial cells. PECAM-1 possesses adhesive and signaling properties, the latter being mediated by immunoreceptor tyrosine-based inhibitory motifs present on the cytoplasmic tail of the protein. Interpersonal trust is currently receiving widespread attention in the academy. Many legal scholars incorrectly assume that interpersonal trust is an unmitigated good (or bad) and that legal policy should therefore be crafted to maximize (or minimize) trust. A more nuanced understanding of trust indicates instead that it should be promoted or discouraged, depending on the context. Such an understanding needs to reflect the fact that trust and distrust can, and often do, coexist. In most relationships, the parties trust one another with regard to some matters and yet distrust one another with regard to other matters. More specifically, developing a …

Adult Leptodactylus fragilis are small. The head is longer than wide, and the hind limbs are moderately long (Table 1; Heyer and Thompson 2000 provided definitions of adult size and leg length categories for Leptodactylus). Male vocal sacs are laterally expanded and range from lightly gray speckled to darkly pigmented. Male snout is spatulate; female snout is rounded. Male forearms are not hypertrophied and males lack asperities on the thumbs and chest. The dorsum is spotted or blotched with dark markings, which are often chevron-shaped and sometimes confluent. The evidentiary basis of the currently accepted classification of living amphibians is discussed and shown not to warrant the degree of authority conferred on it by use and tradition. A new taxonomy of living amphibians is proposed to correct the deficiencies of the old one. This new taxonomy is based on the largest phylogenetic analysis of living Amphibia so far accomplished. We combined the comparative anatomical character evidence of Haas (2003) with DNA sequences from the mitochondrial transcription unit H1 (12S and 16S ribosomal RNA and tRNAValine genes, ø 2,400 bp of mitochondrial sequences) and the nuclear genes histone H3, …

At the 1787 Philadelphia Convention, abolitionist and anti-slavery delegates were faced with a direct choice: they could either explicitly end the institution, or they could allow for it to continue. If they had decided to push for abolition, the confederation would almost certainly have dissolved into two or three separate sovereign confederacies or countries. If they chose not to endorse abolition within the text of the Constitution, they could still restrain the facilitator of slavery, the slave trade, and continue to endorse the institution's end, while also maintaining the Union.

Coping Strategy Use And Resilience Among Children Reporting Victimization, Julie K. Gepner

Prior studies have established the negative implications of peer victimization; additional literature has focused on how children cope with the negative effects of peer bullying. However, no current research has examined the specific coping strategies, which may result in resiliency to the negative effects of peer victimization. The present study examined victimization, coping strategies, and resilience in a sample of 143 third through sixth grade students. The results indicated that the coping strategy of seeking social support was associated with resiliency among victims of aggression. In contrast, coping using externalizing behavior was associated with significantly lower levels of resiliency. The …

Plants are herbaceous and perennial with a racemose inflorescence consisting of showy, slightly fragrant flowers ranging in color from almost white to lavender. Leaves are alternate and shallowly palmately lobed and stems and leaves are coarsely pubescent.

The purpose of this study was to compare Resilon™ density produced by different filling techniques. Cold lateral condensation technique (CLC) was compared to continuous wave of condensation technique (CWC) under varying temperature settings and depth of plugger penetration. Seventy acrylic blocks were instrumented, weighed and distributed into seven groups. Group 1 was obturated with CLC. Groups 2, 3, and 4 were obturated with CWC at 100° C, 150° C, and 200° C, respectively, with the plugger taken to a depth of 3 mm short of working length, and then backfilled. In enacting the tax laws, Congress and others involved in the legislative process have been accused by many, including individual members of Congress, congressional aides, and the press, of employing gimmicks and sleight of hand as part of the tax legislative process. Some of these so-called gimmicks include the use of non-code provisions to benefit certain taxpayers, the use of the alternative minimum tax to scale back tax benefits (and lower revenue costs), and also the use of delayed effective dates and transition rules to lower revenue costs.

Science faculty with ambitions to move up to larger universities are unlikely to assign readings in Creation Science. Scientists who express doubts about Evolutionism are punished for straying from orthodoxy.
