Sexually Dimorphic Social Development And Female Intrasexual Chemical Signaling Of African Elephants (Loxodonta Africana), Jordana M. Meyer

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations

Author's abstract: African elephants are a polygynous species in which males and females carry out dimorphic lifestyles. Males search and compete for reproductively active females, while females care for offspring and facilitate group cohesion. The objectives of this study was a) to compare the development of sexually dimorphic behaviors and developmental trends between young male and female wild African elephants and b) to determine the ability of captive female African elephants to discern between the follicular and luteal phase of conspecifics through trunk-tip contacts and the investigation of urine, and whether the reproductive phase of the receiver affected the response …

Enhanced Grain Crop Yield Monitor Accuracy Through Sensor Fusion And Post-Processing Algorithms, Matthew Wayne Veal Jan 2006

Enhanced Grain Crop Yield Monitor Accuracy Through Sensor Fusion And Post-Processing Algorithms, Matthew Wayne Veal

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Yield monitors have become an indispensable part of precision agriculture systemsbecause of their ability to measure the yield variability. Accurate yield monitor data availabilityis essential for the assessment of farm practices. The current technology of measuring grainyields is prone to errors that can be attributed to mass flow variations caused by the mechanismswithin a grain combine. Because of throughput variations, there are doubts regarding thecorrelation between the mass flow measurement and the actual grain volume produced at aspecific location. Another inaccuracy observed in yield monitor data can be attributed to inexactcut-widths values entered by the machine operator. To effectively address these …

Early-Successional Plants Regulate Grassland Productivity And Species Composition: A Removal Experiment, H. Wayne Polley, Brian J. Wilsey, Justin D. Derner, Hyrum B. Johnson, Joaquin Sanabria

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Grime’s (1998) ‘‘mass-ratio’’ hypothesis holds that ecosystem processes depend in the short term on functional properties of dominant plants and in the longer term on how resident species influence the recruitment of dominants. The latter of these effects may be especially important among early-successional species in disturbed ecosystems, but experimental tests are few. We removed two groups of early-successional species, an annual forb Gutierrezia dracunculoides (DC.) S. F. Blake and annual species (mostly grasses) that complete growth early in the growing season [early-season (ES) species], from a heavily-grazed grassland in central Texas, USA dominated by a C4 perennial grass. …

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Cationic liposome-DNA (lipoplexes) or polymer-DNA (polyplexes) complexes have been used to deliver therapeutic genes, both in vitro and in vivo. However, gene transfer by these non-viral vectors is usually inhibited by biological milieu. A relatively high efficiency of transfection could be achieved in human oral cancer cells transfected with the polycationic liposome, Metafectene, and the polyamine reagent, GeneJammer, in the presence of 60% fetal bovine serum (FBS) (Konopka et al., Cell. Mol. Biol. Lett. 10 (2005) 455-470). Here, we examined the efficacy of these vectors to deliver β-galactosidase (β-gal), luciferase and Herpes Simplex Virus thymidine kinase (HSV-tk) genes to SCCVII …

The States "Race" With The Federal Government For Stem Cell Research, Joanna K. Sax Jan 2006

The States "Race" With The Federal Government For Stem Cell Research, Joanna K. Sax

Faculty Scholarship

The goal of this paper is to analyze and explain the impact of state legislation and funding on the future of stem cell research. Without federal law regulating stem cell research, funding by states and private organizations may spur competition to attract and retain leading scientists and industry in individual states. Alternatively, state-funded stem cell research may incite the federal government to react either positively or negatively to pre-empt state and private action. Traditionally, most support for scientific research comes in the form of grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Due to the practical ban on stem cell …

Conjunctions In Biological Neural Architectures For Visual Pose Estimation / Tom´As Maul, Maul Tom´As Jan 2006

Conjunctions In Biological Neural Architectures For Visual Pose Estimation / Tom´As Maul, Maul Tom´As

Student Works (2000-2009)

The current thesis is concerned with how biological systems solve the computational problem of visual pose estimation. Four levels of analysis are traversed in order of decreasing abstraction: computational, algorithmic, implementational and formational. As each level is traversed, a biological plausibility argument is gradually strengthened. At the algorithmic level, several approaches for solving the pose estimation problem are compared in terms of their neural implementability. A highly parallel approach based on simple inter-map conjunctions, or correspondence distributions, is chosen and tested on synthetic and real patterns. The accuracy and robustness of the approach are demonstrated in relation to various critical …

A Finite Element Approach For The Planning And Simulation Of 3d Mandibular Osteotomy For Orthognathic Surgery / Unaizah Hanum Obaidellah, Obaidellah Unaizah Hanum

Student Works (2000-2009)

Facial deformities caused by accidents or malformation at birth highly influence the appearance and functionality aspects of an individual. Self-confidence and interpersonal relationships in addition to the ability of breathing, biting and speaking are the few factors affected by facial disharmony. Often corrective surgery known as orthognathic surgery is performed to resolve this issue. Careful and precise surgery planning is mandatory to ensure the success of a surgery that leads to a change in the facial morphology of an individual. The current technique used by craniofacial surgeons for predicting a patient’s post operative facial appearance is done by sketches on …

De Novo Asymmetric Syntheses Of Biologically Important Natural Products: Phomopsolide D, Phomopsolide E, Milbemycin Beta3 And Apicularen A., Miaosheng Li

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

De novo asymmetric synthesis is a strategy that uses asymmetric catalysis to construct chiral molecules from achiral starting materials. One of the advantages of this strategy is that we can synthesize numerous stereoisomers (e.g. the enantiomers) of the target natural product for biological testing. Substituted α,β-unsaturated δ-lactones are an important class of natural products with a wide range of biological activity. Many synthetic methodologies have been developed to synthesize this core structure. However, they depended on either performing kinetic resolutions or chiral starting materials (e.g. carbohydrates). We envisioned using catalytic asymmetric catalysis (de novo approach) to synthesize these complex molecules. …

Variational Methods For Image Deblurring And Discretized Picard's Method, James H. Money Jan 2006

Variational Methods For Image Deblurring And Discretized Picard's Method, James H. Money

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

In this digital age, it is more important than ever to have good methods for processing images. We focus on the removal of blur from a captured image, which is called the image deblurring problem. In particular, we make no assumptions about the blur itself, which is called a blind deconvolution. We approach the problem by miniming an energy functional that utilizes total variation norm and a fidelity constraint. In particular, we extend the work of Chan and Wong to use a reference image in the computation. Using the shock filter as a reference image, we produce a superior result …

Noise Characerization For Proposed Ucf Phyiscal Science Building Sites., Jorge Martinez Jan 2006

Noise Characerization For Proposed Ucf Phyiscal Science Building Sites., Jorge Martinez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Today's Advance Technology Facilities require low noise levels and increased noise monitoring. Ambient noise can interfere with the accuracy and precision of experiments and manufacturing processes. Therefore preconstruction site surveys are needed to develop strategies for mitigating noise. Vibration and low frequency electromagnetic fields are particularly detrimental for sensitive instruments, and they are also difficult to mitigate. However a large part of these costs can be avoided or minimized if a quiet building site is selected in the first place. Accelerometers and gauss meters combined with a computer for acquisition and analysis provide a low cost method of evaluating noise …

Decreasing Alcohol Use Among High School Students By Challenging Alcohol Expectancies, Iris Cruz Jan 2006

Decreasing Alcohol Use Among High School Students By Challenging Alcohol Expectancies, Iris Cruz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Altering alcohol expectancies has reduced alcohol use among college students and may lead to successful prevention of alcohol use among high school students. We randomly assigned 379 12th-grade students to an expectancy challenge, traditional alcohol information, or control condition, and used Individual Differences Scaling to map expectancies into memory network format with Preference Mapping to model likely paths of association. After expectancy and traditional alcohol interventions, higher drinking male participants exhibited a greater likelihood to associate alcohol use with negative and sedating consequences and a decreased likelihood to associate alcohol with positive and arousing consequences. Drinking decreases paralleled the magnitude …

Iqgap1 Knockdown Enhances The Endothelial Barrier In Vitro, Wentao Zhang Jan 2006

Iqgap1 Knockdown Enhances The Endothelial Barrier In Vitro, Wentao Zhang

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

IQGAP1 overexpression inhibits E-cadherin-mediated epithelial cell-cell adhesion by distabilizing the adherens junctions, and activated Rac1 and Cdc42 may prevent these effects by removing IQGAP1 from the adherens junction complex. In the present study, we determined if IQGAP1 associates with the adherens junction of endothelial cells and affects endothelial barrier function. In human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs), IQGAP1 associated with VE-cadherin, the catenins, beta, gamma, alpha, and p120, but not with N-cadherin or the tight junction proteins, occludin, claudin-5, and ZO-1. Detergent extracted most of the IQGAP1 associated with VE-cadherin. Treatment of endothelial cells with sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), which increases the …

Multiobjective Simulation Optimization Using Enhanced Evolutionary Algorithm Approaches, Hamidreza Eskandari Jan 2006

Multiobjective Simulation Optimization Using Enhanced Evolutionary Algorithm Approaches, Hamidreza Eskandari

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

In today's competitive business environment, a firm's ability to make the correct, critical decisions can be translated into a great competitive advantage. Most of these critical real-world decisions involve the optimization not only of multiple objectives simultaneously, but also conflicting objectives, where improving one objective may degrade the performance of one or more of the other objectives. Traditional approaches for solving multiobjective optimization problems typically try to scalarize the multiple objectives into a single objective. This transforms the original multiple optimization problem formulation into a single objective optimization problem with a single solution. However, the drawbacks to these traditional approaches …

Using The Software Adapter To Connect Legacy Simulation Models To The Rti, Deepak Kumar Rachapalli Jan 2006

Using The Software Adapter To Connect Legacy Simulation Models To The Rti, Deepak Kumar Rachapalli

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The establishment of a network of persistent shared simulations depends on the presence of a robust standard for communicating state information between those simulations. The High Level Architecture (HLA) can serve as the basis for such a standard. While the HLA is architecture, not software, use of Run Time Infrastructure (RTI) software is required to support operations of a federation execution. The integration of RTI with existing simulation models is complex and requires a lot of expertise. This thesis implements a less complex and effective interaction between a legacy simulation model and RTI using a middleware tool known as Distributed …

Structural And Functional Studies Of Synaptic Enzymes, Eun Jeong Lim Jan 2006

Structural And Functional Studies Of Synaptic Enzymes, Eun Jeong Lim

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Thimet oligopeptidase (TOP, EC 3.4.24.15) and neurolysin (EC 3.4.24.16) are zincdependent metallopeptidases that metabolize small bioactive peptides. The two enzymes share60 % sequence identity and their crystal structures demonstrate that they adopt nearly identicalfolds. They generally cleave at the same sites, but they recognize different positions on somepeptides, including neurotensin, a 13-residue peptide involved in modulation of dopaminergiccircuits, pain perception, and thermoregulation. On the basis of crystal structures and previous mapping studies, four residues(E469/R470, M490/R491, H495/N496, and R498/T499, TOP residues listed first) in thesubstrate-binding channel appear positioned to account for differences in specificity. TOPmutated to the neurolysin residues at all four …

Solution And Solid State Interactions Between Ionic Π-Systems, Jing Chen

University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations

Although attractive interactions between π systems (π-π interaction) have been known for many years, understanding of its origin is still incomplete. Quantitative measuring of π-stacking is challenging due to the weak nature of the π-π interaction. This dissertation aims at elucidating a quantitative conformational analysis by NMR ring current anisotropy of an organic compound capable of intramolecular π-stacking in solution and studying charge effects on the stacking of π-systems. This dissertation offers four contributions to the area. (1) A general approach to four-state, conformational analysis based on the magnetic anisotropy of molecules undergoing fast dynamic exchange is described. (2) Study …
