Primary Structure Of The Carbohydrate-Binding Modules In Various Cellulolytic, Thermophilic, Anaerobic, Ethanol-Producing Isolates, Melek Özkan, Gülay Özcengi̇z

In the present study, the carbohydrate-binding module (CBM) coding sequences of the cellulosomes of 13 thermophilic, cellulolytic, anaerobic, ethanol-producing bacterial isolates having some variations in their growth and cellulose degradation capacities were amplified by PCR and then sequenced. The sequence analysis of the amplicons revealed that CBMs of 7 of the isolates including the isolate 7-9-1 with the highest capacity of cellulose degradation in solid medium have 100% identity in both nucleotide and amino acid sequences to CipB of Clostridium thermocellum in the compared regions. Working in the best interest of children in abuse and neglect cases is a daunting task for both lawyers and social workers. The legal system is inadequate to meet the myriad needs of children and families in crisis. Yet only under the authority of the legal system can social work and other mental health professions intervene in families on behalf of children. The juvenile court system has been buffeted historically by the competing values and methods of social work and law. The institution and its rules are still evolving today. On June 8, 2005, Congressman Lamar Smith introduced H.R. 2795, the Patent Reform Act of 2005, aimed at improving the quality and certainty of issued patents, simplifying the patent procurement process, harmonizing U.S. law with international practice, and reining in abusive patent enforcement practices. Congress has set the legislation aside for the time being, but will likely revisit the issue again shortly. The biotechnology industry, one of the fastest growing sectors in the United States economy, strongly opposes many of the proposed reforms. We assessed the digestibility and utilization of ice algae and phytoplankton by the shallow, subtidal benthos in Ny Ålesund (Kongsfjord) on Svalbard (79°N, 12°E) using chlorophyll a (chl a), essential fatty acids (EFAs) and stable isotopes as tracers of food consumption and assimilation. Intact benthic communities in sediment cores and individuals of dominant benthic taxa were given ice algae, phytoplankton, 13C-enriched ice algae or a no food addition control for 19 to 32 d. BACKGROUND: Protein acetylation is increasingly recognized as an important mechanism regulating a variety of cellular functions. Several human protein acetyltransferases have been characterized, most of them catalyzing epsilon-acetylation of histones and transcription factors. We recently described the human protein acetyltransferase hARD1 (human Arrest Defective 1). hARD1 interacts with NATH (N-Acetyl Transferase Human) forming a complex expressing protein N-terminal alpha-acetylation activity. RESULTS: We here describe a human protein, hARD2, with 81 % sequence identity to hARD1. The gene encoding hARD2 most likely originates from a eutherian mammal specific retrotransposition event. hARD2 mRNA and protein are expressed in several human cell lines. …

The effects of inoculation with Rhizobium leguminosarum on seed yield and yield components of common vetch (Vicia sativa L.) were evaluated under Black Sea Coastal Region conditions, Turkey, in the 2001-2002 and 2002-2003 growing seasons using common vetch cultivars Kubilay, Ürem, Karaelçi, Uludağ, Emir, Çubuk and Nilüfer. The experiment was established as a split block design with 3 replications. Inoculation increased seed yield and all yield components of common vetch cultivars. It was observed that inoculated common vetch cultivars gave higher biological yield (8.5%), seed yield (7.6%), straw yield (10.4%), pod length (25.5%), number of seed per pod (16.2%), number …

Common evening primrose (Oenothera biennis L., Onagraceae) is a biennial herbaceous forb. It is commercially cultivated in over 15 countries for its seed oil, which contains the essential fatty acids, linoleic and gamma-linolenic acid. The present study was carried out to determine the effects of different nitrogen doses (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha^{-1}) and row spacing applications (20, 40 and 60 cm) on yield and quality of Oenothera biennis L. grown in irrigated lowland and unirrigated dryland in the Gukurova conditions region in 2000 and 2001. New complexes of chloro-salicylidene aniline with Co(II) and Cu(II) were synthesised and screened for antibacterial activity against several bacterial strains, namely Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The metal complexes showed enhanced antibacterial activity compared to uncomplexed ligands.

The Efficacy Of Spinosad On Different Strains Of Spodoptera Littoralis (Boisduval) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), Hi̇lal Aydin, M. Oktay Gürkan

The cotton leafworm, Spodoptera littoralis (Boisduval), was collected from commercial cotton production fields in Adana, Turkey, and tested for susceptibility to the insecticide spinosad. The susceptibility of the field strain was also compared to the susceptible strain (S) of S. littoralis. Lethal dose bioassays were performed with third instar larvae using the leaf dip method. The LC50 values for field and susceptible strains were 43.691 and 10.037 ppm, respectively. When LC50 values and 95% confidence intervals were compared with a susceptible laboratory reference strain, the field strain was approximately 4.4-fold less sensitive than the susceptible strain. A pot experiment was performed according to a factorial randomized design at Aligarh to study the effect of 4 levels of gibberellic acid spray (0, 10-8, 10-6 and 10-4 M GA3) on the growth, leaf-NPK content, yield and quality parameters of 2 tomato cultivars (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.), namely Hyb-SC-3 and Hyb-Himalata. Irrespective of its concentration, spray of gibberellic acid proved beneficial for most parameters, especially in the case of Hyb-SC-3.

Specimens of Silene multifida (Adams) Rohrb. were collected in the vicinity of Yomra, Trabzon, Turkey. The fresh plants were air-dried and chopped. This material was extracted with cold chloroform (CHCl3). The chloroform extract was dissolved in dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO), and, following column chromatography, 6 fractions were obtained. The serial dilutions (0.5, 1, 2, 4 and 10 mg/ml) of these fractions were prepared in 5% Tween 20. The fractions were tested for antimicrobial activity using the agar diffusion technique against 6 bacteria, Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus aureus, Esherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Enterobacter cloacae and Proteus vulgaris, and 1 fungus, Candida albicans. The aim of this study was to determine Lactobacillus bulgaricus and Lactobacillus casei isolated from yoghurt, different kinds of cheese and a traditional food named 'tarhana' (a fermented food made of a mixture of cereal, yoghurt and thyme), and to determine the antimicrobial activity and antibiotic resistance of these isolates. Isolation And Characterization Of Four Isoinhibitors From Cowpea (Vigna Unguiculata (L.) Walp.) Seeds, Reda Helmy Ahmed Sammour

Four isoinhibitors of trypsin have been isolated from the cowpea, Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp., in a highly purified state, as indicated by Urea-SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, equilibrium chromatography, and amino acid analysis. The amino acid composition was characterized by the absence of free -SH groups, high half-cysteine, and the absence of tryptophan and methionine in isoinhibitors II and III. Isoinhibitor II contained 96 amino acid residues, whereas isoinhibitor III contained 80. Isoinhibitor II had lysine in the reactive site, while isoinhibitor III had arginine. Isoinhibitor IA inhibited trypsin only, while isoinhibitors IB, II, and III inhibited both trypsin and \alpha-chymotrypsin, indicating …

Eutrophication of surface waters due to high phosphorus (P) concentrations is an important water quality concern in Greene County, Missouri. Phosphorus enrichment has been linked to a variety of non-point sources including runoff from both agricultural and urban land uses. Soil P has been shown to be a source of P in runoff. The differences in soil P among different land uses may provide insight into which land use contributes more P in runoff.
