Five Years Of Change In An Old-Growth Pine-Hardwood Remnant In Ashley County, Arkansas, Don C. Bragg

The Levi Wilcoxon Demonstration Forest near Hamburg, Arkansas is an industrially-owned remnant of old-growth pine and hardwoods. Some of the loblolly (Pinus taeda L.)and shortleaf (Pinus echinata Mill.)pine in this stand are over 200 years old, and numerous individuals exceed 90 cm in diameter and 30 m in height. A2000 survey of a portion of this tract found that 27 tree species contributed an average of387.5 live stems/ha and 31.8 m2 /ha of basal area. An inventory of the same plots in2006 yielded noticeable declines in density (now down to 342.5 stems/ha) and basal area (now 28.2 m2 /ha). Much …

The Great Lakes - St. Lawrence Seaway Maritime System, depicted in Figure 1, has been extremely important to the development of the North American mid-continent and continues to play a vital role in the West Michigan economy. The System allows ocean vessels to carry freight between the Lakes states and overseas destinations, and also allows for movement of goods on laker vessels both wholly within the Lakes and between the Lakes and eastern ports such as Montreal and Quebec City. Epitope Labeling Of Histidine Decarboxylase In Drosophila Melanogaster, Stephanie A. N. Payne

Histidine decarboxylase (HDC) plays a critical role in the synthesis of histamine, a central nervous system neurotransmitter used by both vertebrates and invertebrates. Past attempts to create antisera that recognize the HDC protein in vivo have not produced satisfactory antisera. While HDC antiserum has been made in other organisms, they appear not to be useful across species, including Drosophila melanogaster. As a result, little is known about the localization as well as the biochemistry of HDC in the fly. It has been suggested that HDC undergoes a complex maturation process, including cleavage of the polypeptide at both the N- and …

Current psychiatric nosology depicts posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) as a discrete diagnostic category. However, only one study has examined the latent structure of PTSD, and this study suggested that PTSD may be more accurately conceptualized as an extreme reaction to traumatic life events rather than a discrete clinical syndrome. To build on the existing literature base, the present research examined the latent structure of posttraumatic stress reactions by applying three taxometric procedures (MAXEIG, MAMBAC, and L-Mode) to data collected from large nationally representative samples of women (ns = 2684 and 3033) and adolescents (n = 3775). Leptodactylus fragilis (Brocchi) White-lipped thin-toed frogs are characteristically defined according to their habitation and age. There is a diagnosis of different species group within Leptodactylus. It is furthermore described from different perspectives and discoveries such as its eggs and karyotype. The distribution of the frog is considered to be prominent occurring form Southernmost Teaxs throughout Mexico and Middle America expanding to Venezuela. The fossil fuel records and literature on Leptodactylus are slighly viewed before studying its nomenclatural history and rarity.

Not that long ago, international family law (IFL) referred to a series of multilateral conventions basically concerned with conflicts of law questions. It could be studied as part of a course on family law or as part of a course on conflicts of law. But IFL, or family law in which more than one State has an interest, has grown up and become a subject of its own. This is not merely a curricular development. Polymer waveguides present a potentially low cost alternative to electronics in communication systems. Polymers offer relatively straightforward and economical fabrication when compared to conventional materials. In this study, a fabrication process for Bragg gratings in polymer waveguides was developed. Waveguides were designed using finite-element analysis, patterned via e-beam lithography, and a detailed fabrication method was developed. Surface-Plasmon Resonance (SPR) is a widely accepted method for biological and chemical sensing. Measurement of bulk refractive index changes and specific surface binding is a crucial part in any biosensing. A biological assay is designed to set up a rapid and robust drug-screening system on a small scale. An assay is considered as a single unit of a platform to screen various compounds for aiding in drug discovery. Each assay is carried out in a 96-well plate, each of whose wells consists of the biological component called the Spheroids. Two field studies examining direct ecological weed control practices were conducted in Lexington, Kentucky. The first evaluated weed control efficacy and influence on yields of several mulches in two organically-managed bell pepper (Capsicum annum) production systems for two years. Peppers were planted in double rows in flat, bare ground or on black polyethylene-covered raised beds with drip irrigation, and four mulches (straw, compost, wood chips, and undersown white dutch clover (Trifolium repens L.) living mulch) were applied to the two production systems. In both years, polyethylene-covered raised beds produced higher yields than the flat, bare ground system. In the second …

The title question is evaluated in light of three key sub-issues: consumer rights of exit with respect to consumption of GM crops, environmental risk from GM crops and the effectiveness of the scientific community in addressing non-technical issues that have been raised by GM crops. Three key theses are argued. U.S. labeling policy for GM crops provides only tenuous protection for a consumer's ethical right to eat a diet that conforms to religious, cultural or politically based values. Environmental risks, though real, have been overstated by critics of GM crops, who have ignored significant environmental risks from non-GM agricultural technologies. …

This article examines the implications of U.S. federal and international regulatory mandates in the construction and circulation of racial categories in biomedical research and drug development. It will focus on the interface between two regulatory mandates in particular: the International Conference on Harmonization (ICH) Guideline Document E-5 on Ethnic Factors in the Acceptability of Foreign Clinical Data, and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Guidance for Industry: Collection of Race and Ethnicity Data in Clinical Trials. Purpose: It has been shown that after extracapsular lens removal by anterior capsulotomy in the mouse, the lens can be regenerated. However, as the capsular bag is filled with fibers, epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), an event which is common after cataract surgery as well, takes place during early stages. This study, using a unique mouse model, was undertaken to identify novel regulators and networks in order to more clearly understand secondary cataracts at the molecular level.
