Assessment and Reporting
In May 2005 the Department of Education, Science and Training commissioned the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to investigate and report on models and implementation arrangements for an Australian Certificate of Education (ACE). In particular, ACER was asked to investigate four options for the introduction of a new certificate. The current investigation has reviewed existing curriculum, assessment and certification arrangements in the senior years of school in Australia; explored current issues in senior secondary education and examined state and territory responses to these issues; looked at some alternative certification arrangements internationally—including the International Baccalaureate Diploma Program; investigated the use …

Redefining The Responsibility Of Pre-Press File Management Within Graphic Design: How Printing Technology Impacts Our Design Development, Meredith A. Bielaska
Redefining The Responsibility Of Pre-Press File Management Within Graphic Design: How Printing Technology Impacts Our Design Development, Meredith A. Bielaska
Theses
Technical problems can arise when a graphic designer submits digital files to a commercial offset lithographic printer. The graphic design profession has an opportunity to strengthen the education of design students by teaching them how to recognize potential printing prroblems and address them before the students enter professional practice. The purpose of this thesis is to identify the most common design problems and printing constraints that designers encounter when they develop an item to be printed using offset lithographic printing. The graphic design content of this thesis will include design development processes that specifically focus on issues of imposition, pagination, …
Barn Again: A Case Study Of Congregational Reformation As Expressed Through The Rhetoric Of Church Architecture, Karen Elizabeth Burch
Barn Again: A Case Study Of Congregational Reformation As Expressed Through The Rhetoric Of Church Architecture, Karen Elizabeth Burch
Masters Theses
Understanding the way in which church architecture functions rhetorically to communicate identity formation, monumentality, and meaning was the focus of this study.
Ronald C. Arnett's interpersonal praxis is used as a starting point to understand how the architectural rhetoric of reformation happens. It includes the integration of three concepts: faith narrative, or worldview; historicality, the presence of history in a place; and metaphor, or symbol. I argue that it is through an understanding of an integration of these terms as applied to visual communication that architectural communication can be understood.
Sonja Foss's schema for the evaluation of visual imagery was …

First Steps Into Late-Deafness: An Introductory Manual For Newly Deafened Adults, Candis Shannon
First Steps Into Late-Deafness: An Introductory Manual For Newly Deafened Adults, Candis Shannon
English
Late-deafened adults are individuals who lose their hearing in adolescence or adulthood. Whether the hearing loss is sudden or progressive, it forces immense psychosocial changes upon the individual, disrupting relationships and work, and impacting every area of the person's life. This manual serves as a guidebook for the newly deafened adult, giving her understanding, empathy and a road map to help make sense of the adjustment process. The first chapters detail what to expect during visits to the ear specialist and audiologist, and discuss the grieving process and the impact of deafness on identity formation. Information on how to develop …

Father Presence Matters: A Case For Family, Marcia Redmon Miles
Father Presence Matters: A Case For Family, Marcia Redmon Miles
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Children from single parent homes experience disadvantages that often continue into adulthood. This qualitative dissertation project examines the pain and lived experiences of a family where father absence continued through three generations. Literature regarding father absence is reviewed, and the negative outcomes associated with fatherlessness are explored. This project combines a l2-week curriculum training, a 12-day Twelve-Step component, and a 12-month mentorship in a faith-based response to fatherlessness. The objective of this project is to reconnect fathers in a meaningful way with their children, ease pain and facilitate healing of all involved parties.
Visual Design System For Music Education For Children, Sehwa Choi
Visual Design System For Music Education For Children, Sehwa Choi
Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to develop a simple and understandable visual system to convey complicated concepts of musical composition for 1st grade music students. The abstract ideas of major scale, melody and harmony are redefined and expressed appropriately through visual communication. Thus, the visualization of musical sound in this thesis can contribute to the development of music education for children. The graphic design problem of this thesis is an exploration to express abstract and complex ideas through simple visual solutions. This thesis will propose a method of visualization to convert abstract ideas into graphic design solutions, and show …

Digital Storytelling: The Application Of Vichian Theory, Karen Pierotti
Digital Storytelling: The Application Of Vichian Theory, Karen Pierotti
Theses and Dissertations
Storytelling is often looked at as something archaic or something that simpler cultures engage in. However, in our sophisticated and highly technological world storytelling swirls about us though we may not always recognize it. This thesis looks at the phenomenon of digital storytelling that functions to create community on the Internet. In order to ground this phenomenon in theory, I examine the works of Giambattista Vico, the 18th-century Neapolitan philosopher/rhetorician, who lived on the cusp of the Renaissance and the Age of Enlightenment. Furthermore, as a teacher of rhetoric to youth, Vico admonished young people to study the arts of …

Post Modern Image-Based Research: An Innovative Data Collection Method For Illuminating Preservice Teachers’ Developing Perceptions In Field-Based Courses, Janet C. Richards
The Qualitative Report
As part of course requirements twenty -eight preservice teachers in a field- based content reading course create d a series of se lf-portraits that illustrated their concerns and perceptions about teaching content reading. They accompanied their drawings with dialogue. Analysis of the portraits indicates that arts-based techniques have the potential to provide insights about preservice teachers’ perceived realities and understandings that narrative data alone might not reveal. The preservice teachers experienced high levels of stress as they prepared to teach their first lesson and their anxieties continued pas t mid-semester. By the end of the course the majority developed confidence …
