Implants, Pills, & Power: A Modern Analysis Of Women In Magazine Advertisements, Megan "Meg" Davis Jan 2006

Implants, Pills, & Power: A Modern Analysis Of Women In Magazine Advertisements, Megan "Meg" Davis

Whittier Scholars Program

Everyone is greatly affected daily by the media, whether it be billboards, television, or magazines. American culture is saturated with advertisements publicized through all forms of media. The media shapes how people live their lives, what kind of car one might buy, the style of clothes people purchase, what kind of multivitamin one might take, and even what weight women strive to attain. The high increase of plastic surgery, eating disorders, and the bottom of the “Body Business” over the past 30 years have changed the definition of femininity, in turn making it very difficult for women and girls to …

Apcfib, which comes from the venom of Agkistrodon piscivorus conanti (Florida cottonmouth Snake) to dissolve blood stains on two different makes of fabric (80% cotton/ 20% polyester and 100% polyester) and test the enzyme’s ability to dissolve blood stains when combined with a protease, in this case thermolysin, Treatment of blood stains on 100% polyester was more effective overall than on the 80% cotton/100% polyester fabric. 2.0x10^ -4 mol/min of Apcfib activity added to a 200L of blood stain was the minimum needed in order to significantly …

Orientalisms In The Interpretation Of Islamic Philosophy, Muhammad Ali Khalidi Jan 2006

Orientalisms In The Interpretation Of Islamic Philosophy, Muhammad Ali Khalidi

Publications and Research

The recent death of Edward Said has reignited the debate as to whether his landmark work Orientalism still has something to teach us about the study of Arab-Islamic civilization. In this article, I will argue that Saidʼs central thesis in Orientalism has a direct explanatory role to play in our understanding of the work produced in at least one area of scholarship about the Arab and Islamic worlds, namely Arab-Islamic philosophy from the classical or medieval period. Moreover, I will claim that it continues to play this role not only for scholarship produced in the West by Western scholars but …

Lawyers And The Building Of Communities, Roger Cotterrell Jan 2006

Lawyers And The Building Of Communities, Roger Cotterrell

National Law School of India Review

The intermingling of diverse cultures in India and the U.K. forms the backdrop of this special note, which deals with the relevance of culture to law. The recognition that culture plays a role in jurisprudence entails the recognition of differences, whereas in the present era of globalization, there is a movement towards homogenization. The note elaborates on how the role of the lawyer is also in a state of flux, in the midst of these changes. It deals with the way that the society views lawyers: as a lawyer as a technician serving individual clients, rather than a more esteemed …

Looking At Gender Differences Through The Lens Of Sport Spectators, Lynn Ridinger, Daniel C. Funk Jan 2006

Looking At Gender Differences Through The Lens Of Sport Spectators, Lynn Ridinger, Daniel C. Funk

Human Movement Studies & Special Education Faculty Publications

This paper explores common assumptions about the intrinsic differences between male and female consumers within a subset of leisure consumption - sport spectating. This research utilized the Sports Interest Inventory (SII) (Funk, Mahony & Ridinger, 2002) to examine differences between spectators (N = 959) attending men's and women's basketball games at a NCAA Division I institution. MANOVA results revealed nine differences for Team-Gender, seven differences for Spectator-Gender, and three interaction effects. Multiple linear regression analyses revealed that three core interest factors (university pride, team interest, and vicarious achievement) explained a significant proportion of variance in commitment and attendance behavior for …

Level 3

This is the second in a series of three papers which explore and describe ‘quality’ as a tool in the Irish Higher Education sector. A micro perspective is then undertaken pertaining to the Dublin Institute of Technology describing how quality assurance systems and procedures emerged in the Institute. It also includes the Institute’s response to provisions made in the 1999 Qualifications (Education and Training) Act with reference to the necessity of carrying out quality …

Montesquieu On Commerce, Conquest, War And Peace, Robert L. Howse Jan 2006

Montesquieu On Commerce, Conquest, War And Peace, Robert L. Howse

Faculty Articles

Commerce does not guarantee or secure peace in a world of sovereign states; rather, commerce represents for Montesquieu an alternative to a world of sovereign states, of closed political communities—a model of peaceful social cooperation that requires laws and conventions, certainly, but of a transnational, transpolitical kind. We now understand the meaning of Montesquieu’s notion that the model for law is not nomos (the custom or way of a particular society or community) but something more universal, a concept of order or structure that is prior to and more fundamental than nomos. However, while implicit in the idea of law, …

Of Pragmatism And Principle: A Second Look At The Expulsion Of Elizabeth Gurley Flynn From The Aclu's Board Of Directors, Burt Neuborne Jan 2006

Of Pragmatism And Principle: A Second Look At The Expulsion Of Elizabeth Gurley Flynn From The Aclu's Board Of Directors, Burt Neuborne

Faculty Articles

In the years when the ACLU was a relatively powerless group meeting in a Manhattan phone booth, worrying about its internal care and feeding was not particularly important. In the modem era, though, where the ACLU has morphed into a quasi-official organization that is responsible for organizing the Constitution's most important line of defense, the governance of the ACLU is itself a locus of concern. Thus, in view of my lifelong association with the ACLU, and my affection and respect for Nadine as a builder of the organization, I propose to devote my symposium article in her honor, not to …

Crossing The Waterline: A Ritual Inquiry, Barbara Bickel Jan 2006

Crossing The Waterline: A Ritual Inquiry, Barbara Bickel

Publications

In this essay, I inquire phenomenologically into a gesture that I performed and documented through photography. This gesture is significant because it has led me to consider the resistant edge of myself as an artist, researcher, and educator. It is from this resistant edge that I find myself crossing a metaphorical waterline. Waterlines mark the liminal threshold between water and air, i.e., the point of conscious awareness—of breath—below which lay the unknown. This metaphor has helped me become aware of myself as artist, writer, learner, and teacher. In this art essay of my living inquiry into a performed gesture within …

Voluntarism And Volunteering, Richard Holtzman Jan 2006

Voluntarism And Volunteering, Richard Holtzman

History and Social Sciences Faculty Journal Articles

To engage in voluntarism, as the term is commonly understood today, is to freely offer support in the service of others. Defining the concept in such general terms, however, ignores a number of important factors, such as the motives leading individuals to choose such action, the means by which the activity occurs, and the broader implications of voluntarism for society. This chapter looks at voluntarism from a historical perspective to demonstrate the numerous and sometimes conflicting ways the concept has been understood. Recognizing voluntarism as a social issue requires examining it in the variety of historical contexts and settings that …

A New Theory And Measure Of Ethical Work Climate: The Psychological Process Model (Ppm) And The Ethical Climate Index (Eci), Anke Arnaud Jan 2006

A New Theory And Measure Of Ethical Work Climate: The Psychological Process Model (Ppm) And The Ethical Climate Index (Eci), Anke Arnaud

Management, Marketing and Operations - Daytona Beach

With this dissertation I developed a new theory and measure of ethical work climate (EWC). Currently, there exists one dominant theory and measure of EWC developed by Victor and Cullen (1988, 1987). Even though researchers have identified problems with this theory, such as inconsistencies with regard to its limited theoretical scope and troubling psychometric properties, it is the most widely utilized framework for conceptualizing and testing EWC. Therefore, I propose to develop an improved theory and measure of EWC, one capable of addressing some of the principle shortcomings of earlier efforts. Building on Rest’s (1986, 1979) “Four-Component” model of individual-level …

Addressing The Arnstein Gap: Improving Public Confidence In Transportation Planning And Design Through Structured Public Involvement (Spi), Keiron Bailey, Ted H. Grossardt Jan 2006

Addressing The Arnstein Gap: Improving Public Confidence In Transportation Planning And Design Through Structured Public Involvement (Spi), Keiron Bailey, Ted H. Grossardt

Kentucky Transportation Center Faculty and Researcher Publications

The Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, or TEA-21, enacted in 1998, following the Intermodal SurfaceTransportation Equity Act (ISTEA) of 1991, defines the “public” as “citizens, affected public agencies, representatives of transportation agency employees, freight shippers, private providers of transportation, representatives of users of public transit, providers of freight transportation services and other interested parties.” More recently the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has expanded this definition to include underrepresented groups “such as low income or minority households and the elderly”. In the last decade public involvement has been mandated for all metropolitan and statewide planning processes (TEA), and it …

South Korea's National Security Law: A Tool Of Oppression In An Insecure World, Diane B. Kraft Jan 2006

South Korea's National Security Law: A Tool Of Oppression In An Insecure World, Diane B. Kraft

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

In September 2004, the ruling party in South Korea, along with two opposition parties, called for the abolishment of the 1948 anti-communist National Security Law. The following month, Amnesty International, a long-time critic of the law, officially called for the law's repeal. The law had been enacted in 1948 in response to threats from communist North Korea, but has long been used by the government to silence legitimate opposition in South Korea. This Comment will examine South Korea's National Security Law as viewed by its domestic supporters and critics, as well as by the international community. Part I will consider …
