Subject Librarians In The Changing Academic Library, Louise Feldman
Subject Librarians In The Changing Academic Library, Louise Feldman
E-JASL: Electronic Journal of Academic and Special Librarianship (1999-2009, Volumes 1-10)
Abstract
This article overviews the literature and key topics surrounding the role of subject librarianship in the evolving environment of academic libraries. Subject librarians are looked at in the context of the broad trends affecting librarianship and in the context of the traditional roles they have held in collection development, instruction, and reference. The author opened a discussion on this topic entitled, “Subject Librarians: Viable or Vanishing?” for the RUSA-CODES Dual Assignments Discussion Group at the American Library Association Midwinter Meeting in San Antonio, Texas in January of 2006.
Review Of The Reenchantment Of Nineteenth-Century Fiction: Dickens, Thackeray, George Eliot, And Serialization, David Payne
Review Of The Reenchantment Of Nineteenth-Century Fiction: Dickens, Thackeray, George Eliot, And Serialization, David Payne
The George Eliot Review Online, ISSN: 2831-5375
'To begin reading George Eliot,' David Payne suggests, 'is speedily to encounter the conviction that modernity is best approached from an oblique angle.' Unlike, say, her contemporary, Charles Dickens, George Eliot's fictions 'return us to the provincial settings of Austen and Scott; and they set their actions in historical pasts which, as we read along, soon appear quite specific.' Payne's study of Dickens, Thackeray and George Eliot is primarily concerned with the Victorian response to modernity, but in a fairly specific methodological way, that entwines 'the ideological history of theology and political economy, the literary history of the novel, and …

The Leadership in Scholarship program is an enhancement to the Johnson & Wales University Honors Program that has been piloted at our Denver Campus for the last three years. It upgrades a cross-disciplinary student honors experience by adding an orientation program, tailored on-campus services, and a living and learning community to the system-wide honors program. It is housed in the Community Leadership Institute, a co-curricular department that adds value to a student’s experience by providing leadership and community service opportunities for every student on campus via leadership studies courses, service learning, a visiting faculty program and a selective leadership development …

Expeditionary Learning: A Low–Risk, Low–Cost, High–Impact Professional Development Model, Chris Carlson-Dakes, Alice Pawley
To Improve the Academy: A Journal of Educational Development
We describe a low-risk, low-cost, high-impact professional development program to help faculty, instructional staff, postdoctoral fellows, and graduate students create space in their lives to explore the diversity of their campus community and reflect on beliefs about teaching and learning in higher education. Along with small group discussions, participants have “expeditions” onto campus to explore learning situations and academic life in ways that they have never before experienced. We describe our theoretical model, programmatic and evaluation structure, and some participants’ insights into why they participated and what they learned from our first implementation.
Killing Jim Crow And The Undead Nondelegation Doctrine With Privately Enforceable Federal Regulations, Brian J. Sutherland
Killing Jim Crow And The Undead Nondelegation Doctrine With Privately Enforceable Federal Regulations, Brian J. Sutherland
Seattle University Law Review
This Comment has two goals. First, it seeks to contextualize, within the reality of institutional racism, the debate over the private enforceability of federal regulations under 42 U.S.C. § 1983. On the one hand, the regulations promulgated pursuant to Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 already include many provisions which effectively confront the vestiges of racially discriminatory law and policy. The logical inference is that these perfectly proscriptive federal regulations ought to be enforceable, through private lawsuits if necessary, in order to enjoin and deter such policy and procedure. On the other hand, federal administrative agencies have …

Women In History--Grace Abbott: A Leader In Social Reform, Shari Cole Hoffman
Women In History--Grace Abbott: A Leader In Social Reform, Shari Cole Hoffman
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
One of the earlier 20th century American women leaders in Progressivism was Grace Abbott who led the way so others might be the voices for those unheard. Abbott's heritage influenced her lifetime commitment to social improvement. She was born on November 17, 1878 in Grand Island, Nebraska into a family of activists. Her Quaker mother, Elizabeth Griffin Abbott, came from an abolitionist family and participated in the Underground Railroad. Elizabeth was also actively involved in the women's suffrage movement and often hosted suffrage meetings and events in her home. Susan B. Anthony frequently stayed with the Abbotts when visiting Grand …

Who Fits The Profile?: Thoughts On Race, Class, Clusters And Redevelopment, Audrey Mcfarlane
Who Fits The Profile?: Thoughts On Race, Class, Clusters And Redevelopment, Audrey Mcfarlane
All Faculty Scholarship
This essay shifts the discussion of gentrification and redevelopment to consider the mechanics of exclusion in the formulation and operation of today's commercial retail shopping venues typically included in today's urban redevelopment projects. In particular the essay discusses the exclusionary implications of geo-demographic cluster classification systems that use race and class to construct profiles of desirable customers for urban redevelopment schemes.
Dog-Focused Law's Impact On Disability Rights: Ontario's Pit Bull Legislation As A Case In Point, Barbara Hanson
Dog-Focused Law's Impact On Disability Rights: Ontario's Pit Bull Legislation As A Case In Point, Barbara Hanson
Animal Law Review
Legislation that affects dogs also affects persons with disabilities to some extent. This link shows up in statutory definitions, is justified by social construction theory, and has been reified in case law. Thus, it is important to examine statutes like Ontario’s pit bull legislation in terms of their potential impact on persons with disabilities. Upon close examination, it appears that the legislation suffers from vague definitions, conflicting onus of proof, absence of fair process, and severe penalties, including imprisonment. Further, it contains no reference to dogs used by persons with disabilities. This means that there is potential for persons with …
Credit Where It’S Due: The Law And Norms Of Attribution, Catherine Fisk
Credit Where It’S Due: The Law And Norms Of Attribution, Catherine Fisk
Faculty Scholarship
The reputation we develop by receiving credit for the work we do proves to the world the nature of our human capital. If professional reputation were property, it would be the most valuable property that most people own because much human capital is difficult to measure. Although attribution is ubiquitous and important, it is largely unregulated by law. In the absence of law, economic sectors that value attribution have devised non-property regimes founded on social norms to acknowledge and reward employee effort and to attribute responsibility for the success or failure of products and projects. Extant contract-based and norms-based attribution …

Which Theory Applies: An Analysis Of Information Systems Research, Leila Halawi, Richard Mccarthy

Research in information systems has rapidly expanded during its relatively brief existence. IT offers organizations a fundamental decision-enhancing environment that extends new opportunities, therefore producing thriving, competitive firms, adding business value and offering valuable products and services to customers. Research within the IT domain has produced several new theories, some of which have been used to help explain and predict end-user use of technologies. We provide a comprehensive overview of the major IT theories and review their theoretical fundamentals.

A New Progressivism, Cass R. Sunstein
A New Progressivism, Cass R. Sunstein
Articles
There are serious problems with the two twentieth-century approaches to government: the way of markets and the way of planning. The New Progressivism simultaneously offers (1) a distinctive conception of government's appropriate means, an outgrowth of the late-twentieth-century critique of economic planning, and (2) a distinctive understanding of government's appropriate ends, an outgrowth of evident failures with market arrangements and largely a product of the mid-twentieth-century critique of laissez faire. The New Progressivism emphasizes the need to replace bans and commands with appropriate incentives, and to attend to social norms and social meanings in leading human behavior in welfare-promoting directions. …
Government Secrets, Constitutional Law, And Platforms For Judicial Intervention, Adam M. Samaha
Government Secrets, Constitutional Law, And Platforms For Judicial Intervention, Adam M. Samaha
Articles
American law has yet to reach a satisfying conclusion about public access to information on government operations. But recent events are prompting reconsideration of the status quo. As our current system is reassessed, three shortfalls in past debates should be overcome. The first involves ignorance of foreign systems. Other democracies grapple with information access problems, and their recent experiments are illuminating. Indeed they expose two additional domestic weaknesses. One is a line we have drawn within constitutional law. Courts and commentators tend to treat constitutional issues of public access separately from those of executive discretion to withhold information, but these …
The Role Of Mental Health Problems In Explaining Violent Behaviors In Children And Adolescents Over The Lifecourse: An Exploratory Study, Denise Paquette Boots
The Role Of Mental Health Problems In Explaining Violent Behaviors In Children And Adolescents Over The Lifecourse: An Exploratory Study, Denise Paquette Boots
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Juvenile violence is a phenomenon that consistently garners great attention in the media, the public, and across a multitude of academic disciplines. A growing body of literature in developmental and lifecourse criminology has called for innovative research to further investigate the causes and correlates of serious juvenile offenders. Toward this end, the present study uses prospective, longitudinal data from the Pittsburgh Youth Study (PYS) to gauge the temporal impact of childhood and adolescent mental health problems on the development of serious offending behaviors in boys. Borrowing largely from the work of Achenbach and colleagues (2001), data from parent and teacher …
An Ahp Framework For Balancing Efficiency And Equity In The United States Liver Transplantation System, Vijayachandran M. Veerachandran
An Ahp Framework For Balancing Efficiency And Equity In The United States Liver Transplantation System, Vijayachandran M. Veerachandran
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
ABSRACT: Liver transplantation and allocation has been a controversial issue in the United States for decades. One of the main concerns in the allocation system is the trade-off between the two main objectives, efficiency and equity. Unfortunately, it is difficult to reach consensus on how to develop allocation policies that aim at balancing efficiency and equity, among transplantation policy makers, administrators, transplant surgeons and transplant candidates. Our research identifies and classifies the outcomes of liver allocation into two major categories, efficiency and equity, that are, often times, conflicting. Previous researchers did not consider how to balance outcomes in these two categories. …
Assisted Living: The Politics Of Medicaid And Medicare, Sarah Lim
Assisted Living: The Politics Of Medicaid And Medicare, Sarah Lim
Undergraduate Research Symposium (UGRS)
In this paper I examine the structure of the current assisted living industry in order to explain how and why it is appealing and effective, as well as look at its limitations. I discuss the politics of Medicaid and Medicare, and how through these programs the federal and state governments are failing to provide adequate care for the nation’s senior population. Like the rest of our health care system, these two public health insurance systems are fragmented, and consequently, financing long-term care is complicated and insufficient. Ultimately, this paper will function as a policy report and I will propose: standardized …
Police Interrogation Of Juveniles: An Empirical Study Of Policy And Practice, Barry C. Feld
Police Interrogation Of Juveniles: An Empirical Study Of Policy And Practice, Barry C. Feld
Articles
The Supreme Court does not require any special procedural safeguards when police interrogate youths and use the adult standard--“knowing, intelligent, and voluntary under the totality of the circumstances”--to gauge the validity of juveniles' waivers of Miranda rights. Developmental psychologists have studied adolescents' capacity to exercise Miranda rights, questioned whether juveniles possess the cognitive ability and adjudicative competence necessary to exercise legal rights, and contended that immaturity and vulnerability make juveniles uniquely susceptible to police interrogation tactics. In the four decades since the Court decided Miranda, we have almost no empirical research about what actually occurs when police interview criminal suspects, …
Raz, Authority, And Conceptual Analysis, Brian Bix
Raz, Authority, And Conceptual Analysis, Brian Bix
Articles
In "Authority: Revisiting the Service Conception," Joseph Raz reflects on his work on the nature of authority, defending much of what he has written on the subject, while offering some additional clarifications and modifications. I must leave to others a more direct assessment of Raz's views on authority, and the revisions he has suggested in this most recent paper. I will instead focus on some of the methodological considerations he discusses in this paper; in particular, I will compare and contrast Raz's discussion here about conceptual analysis and the concept of authority with his recent analyses of the conceptual analysis …
