Broken Windows: New Evidence From New York City And A Five-City Social Experiment, Bernard E. Harcourt, Jens Ludwig Jan 2006

Broken Windows: New Evidence From New York City And A Five-City Social Experiment, Bernard E. Harcourt, Jens Ludwig

Articles

In 1982, James Q. Wilson and George Kelling suggested in an influential article in the Atlantic Monthly that targeting minor disorder could help reduce more serious crime. More than twenty years later, the three most populous cities in the United States-New York, Chicago, and, most recently, Los Angeles-have all adopted at least some aspect of Wilson and Kelling's theory, primarily through more aggressive enforcement of minor misdemeanor laws. Remarkably little, though, is currently known about the effect of broken windows policing on crime. According to a recent National Research Council report, existing research does not provide strong support for the …

Veterinary Professionals' Workplace Learning In A Corporate Organization: An Ethnographic Study, James F. Steele

Doctor of Education (EdD)

The purpose of this study was to investigate learning orientations, strategies and tactics of veterinarians, and generate explanatory theory grounded in ethnographic data. A theory of approaches to transdisciplinary and disciplinary learning emerged from qualitative analysis of interviews, learning journals and field observations. Eleven subjects in 4 regions were newly employed by a corporate veterinary practice. This research is framed by theories of adult learning, workplace learning, and occupational community. The study was guided by 3 research questions about learning orientations, approaches, strategies and tactics veterinarians applied in the workplace. Resistance And Reinvention Of The Subject In Jackie Kay's Trumpet, A. Lâmia Gülçur Jan 2006

Resistance And Reinvention Of The Subject In Jackie Kay's Trumpet, A. Lâmia Gülçur

Ethnic Studies Review

In her work Methodology of the Oppressed, Chela Sandoval claims that although inequities in material sources and subordination by race, class, nation, gender and sex continue to operate under the protection of law and order, a new kind of psychic penetration that respects no previous boundaries is evolving. She argues that "Mutation in culture, today, makes new forms of identity, ethics, citizenship, aesthetics and resistance accessible" (36.7).

The Souls Of White Folk: W.E.B. Dubois's Critique Of White Supremacy And The Contributions To Critical White Studies, Reiland Rabaka Jan 2006

The Souls Of White Folk: W.E.B. Dubois's Critique Of White Supremacy And The Contributions To Critical White Studies, Reiland Rabaka

Ethnic Studies Review

Traditionally "white supremacy" has been treated in race and racism discourse as white domination of and white discrimination against non-whites, and especially blacks. It is a term that often carries a primarily legal and political connotation, which has been claimed time and time again to be best exemplified by the historic events and contemporary effects of: African holocaust, enslavement and colonization; the "failure" of reconstruction, the ritual of lynching and the rise of Jim Crow segregation in the United States; and, white colonial and racial rule throughout Africa, and especially apartheid in South Africa (Cell, 1982; Fredrickson, 1981; Marx, 1998; …

"No Opportunity For Song:" A Slovak Immigrant's Silencing Analyzed Through Her Pronoun Choice, Danusha V. Goska

Ethnic Studies Review

I can't tell the most frightening story I know, because stories are made of words, and once I was without them. I was trekking in Nepal and ended up with amnesia. Later I stumbled into a mission hospital with a bruised jaw. A bad fall? I can't say. I had no words. No words for this thing that was wrenching and crying, in which "I" - a bundle of terror - seemed trapped. No words for where I began, stopped, or the mud stubble terrace on which I sat. No words to map, no words to define, no words to …

White Conceptions Of Racial Hierarchy: Temporary Versus Permanent Preferences, Jonathan Gayles, Sarah Tobin Jan 2006

White Conceptions Of Racial Hierarchy: Temporary Versus Permanent Preferences, Jonathan Gayles, Sarah Tobin

Ethnic Studies Review

Ideas of race, racial identity, and racial categorization, reflect the inconsistent, context-specific and fluctuating nature of racial meaning (Nagel, 1986; Forbes, 1990; Davis, 1991; Nagel, 1994; Haney-Lopez, 1995; Ignatiev, 1995; Kibria, 1996,1998; Niven & Zilber, 2000; Morning, 2001; Lacy, 2004). Studies of racial hierarchy, specifically, enable an understanding of not only the social construction of race, but also the manner in which ideas of race operate to influence human reality.! Within the United States, race "permeates the lives of the native-born and immigrants alike" (Bashi & McDaniel, 1997, p. 686, see also Bashi, 1998). More specifically, a continuum between white …

Access to care represents a leading health indicator for meeting the complex healthcare and social needs of an exploding population of older adults living in the United States. This qualitative study was undertaken to discover the essence of access to care by community-dwelling older adults with Medicare and Medicaid. Participants were recruited from a metropolitan area in Southern California. Thirteen women and men aged 65 to 91 described their experiences with accessing care during a face-to-face, audio-recorded interview. The Servant-Leader And The Team: Love Without Measure!, Robson M. Marinho Jan 2006

The Servant-Leader And The Team: Love Without Measure!, Robson M. Marinho

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

I don't necessarily have to like my players and partners. But, as a leader I must love them. Love is loyalty, love is teamwork, love respects dignity and individuality. This is the strength of any organization. -Vince Lombardi In a television interview, General Norman Schwarzkopf was faced with the following question (Kouzes & Posner, 1997, p. 329): - How would you like to be remembered in the future? The answer was simple: - That I loved my troops. That my troops loved me. One would hardly expect that kind of answer from a military leader, leaders whose relationship with subordinates …

Maestro: Exploring The Development Of A Servant-Leader, Martha Helland

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

I don't know that I can define or articulate my leadership style. I can only think that I always tried to be prepared musically. Beyond that I guess I just tried to get the job done in a way that enables others to do their best and that affirms and supports them as professionals and as wondeiful people. -Henry Charles Smith A large portion of existing servant-leadership literature focuses on defining what it is, describing how it differs from other leadership practices, discussing its merits, verifying its efficacy, and persuading others to embrace and practice its principles across a broad …

Realizing The Potential Of The Ambidextrous Firm, James Arthur Robins Jan 2006

Realizing The Potential Of The Ambidextrous Firm, James Arthur Robins

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Sustaining innovation in the face of pressures to be cost-competitive and make effective use of existing resources is not a new challenge, but recent acceleration of competition has pushed this issue high on the agenda for managers and researchers. Organizing and managing the “ambidextrous” company – a firm that excel in exploring new areas of productive knowledge and exploiting existing capabilities – has emerged as a major concern of strategic management. In this paper, we explore coordination problems that make it difficult for firms to realize their potential as ambidextrous competitors. Organizations may possess superior skills for both exploration and …

Self, Other And The Sociopolitical In Politically Active Women Survivors Of Domestic Violence, Molly Ann Hedrick Jan 2006

Self, Other And The Sociopolitical In Politically Active Women Survivors Of Domestic Violence, Molly Ann Hedrick

Open Access Dissertations

This research examined experiences with interpersonal, intrapersonal, and structural violence in politically active women survivors of domestic violence. This study also explored how (if at all) these women described processes which Freire (2003) called critical consciousness and liberating action, and what these women can tell us about the processes of change. Participants were 16 survivors of domestic violence recruited from Sisters Overcoming Abusive Relationships (SOAR) in Rhode Island. SOAR is an organization run entirely by survivors of domestic violence and provides political activism with the goal of ending domestic violence. I utilized a mixed-methods, transformative and social constructivist concurrent design. …

Women's Body Image, Patriarchy, And Photography: A Pictorial Content Analysis Of National Geographic's Representation Of Women., Kathryn D. Newhouse

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Women have been depicted within media outlets such as magazines as domestic caretakers for generations. While history has at times been positive in its representation of women, especially during World War II and the government’s plea for women to work in industry, the vast majority of media outlets after the war again created the housewife image from the years before the war for women to follow. The popular governmental posters with “Rosie the Riveter” stating, “We Can Do It!” were replaced with images of a happy wife tending house for her husband fresh from the war. While the posters were …

Reducing Aids-Related Stigma And Discrimination In Indian Hospitals, Vaishali Sharma Mahendra, Laelia Gilborn, Bitra George, Luke Samson, Rupa Mudoi, Sarita Jadav, Indrani Gupta, Shalini Bharat, Celine Daly

HIV and AIDS

People living with HIV/AIDS in India, as elsewhere, face stigma and discrimination in a variety of contexts. Research in India has shown that stigma and discrimination against HIV-positive people and those perceived to be infected are common in hospitals and act as barriers to seeking and receiving critical treatment and care services. Recognizing the need to move beyond documentation of the problem, three New Delhi hospitals; SHARAN, an Indian NGO; and the Horizons program, with support from the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO), carried out an operations research project to develop and test responses to hospital-based stigma and discrimination against …

Promoting More Gender-Equitable Norms And Behaviors Among Young Men As An Hiv/Aids Prevention Strategy, Julie Pulerwitz, Gary Barker, Marcio Segundo, Marcos Nascimento

HIV and AIDS

The Population Council and the Promundo Institute studied the effectiveness of interventions in Brazil designed to change the attitudes of young men in relation to gender norms and reducing the risk of contracting HIV/STIs. One conclusion of the study was the recognition of the importance of engaging young people (men and women) in the issue of gender relations and the risks of HIV contamination. The results of the study indicate that addressing inequitable gender norms, particularly those that define masculinity, can be an important element of HIV prevention strategies. These findings suggest that group education interventions can successfully influence young …
